“Thinking Outside the Box” for
Sheet Metal Fabrication Equipment
Trade shows offer an excellent and
convenient way to not only meet
prospective customers, but to keep in
touch with our most valuable resource…existing
customers.
I thought of this during the FABTECH
2005 exhibition held in Chicago last November
as I welcomed old friends into our booth, some
of whom we have done business with for more
than 20 years. It made me reflect on how, in
many ways, we are still the same, but also how
we all have changed over the years. Not only
our personal appearances – some of us a little
thinner on top…and perhaps a little rounder in
the middle – but also how sheet metal
fabricating equipment has evolved. While we all
can use the advice to SHAPE UP…today the
equipment that is available to fabricate sheet
metal parts is much “leaner” with the ability to
“multi-task” functions thought impossible just a
few years ago.
These equipment changes were prompted
by a new “marketplace reality” for sheet metal
fabricators of all sizes: Make the parts faster and
cheaper while delivering defect-free products ontime
with more features, and of course, at less cost.
Translation: Improve productivity, quality, and
delivery or someone else will – either
domestically or offshore.
However, the equipment changes were also
conceived through listening to these same longterm
customers during hours of negotiations,
brainstorming, and problem solving as we strove
to match our customers’ needs to the right
machine, cell, or system. We listened closely to
what our customers identified as their needs,
concerns, and objectives. In turn, FINN-
POWER product designers and engineers in
Finland and Italy also listened to these customer
comments from around the world. Since
introducing the first hydraulic turret punch
press in 1983, the TP-250, technological
leadership has become a steady pattern of
growth for FINN-POWER.
The new realities of the sheet metal
fabrication industry match FINN-POWER’s
product line perfectly. FINN-POWER has
designed versatility to individual work stages by
integrating them with automated material
management and making automation as flexible
as possible. Our module approach adapts to a
multitude of production needs and changes.
Our goal has always been to improve our
customers’ productivity.
Spreading the Word
And here’s where trade shows emerge as a
marketing tool to disseminate information on
the new products to sheet metal fabricators. The
traditional objective of the trade show remains
the same: To attract large crowds of interested
buyers to the booths. If you have visited many
trade shows, you have probably observed that
there is a common look – a familiarity – that
most exhibitor booths take on. They say that
“familiarity breeds contempt” – and along the
way it also breeds “taking for granted.” Maybe
this is why some studies indicate the decline in
attendance at trade shows. Maybe the attendees
feel that are being taken for granted by the
exhibitors.
Don’t get me wrong. We believe that the
trade show is a very important marketing tool.
But where does it say that all trade show
exhibits have to be the same…or boring?
A Different Drummer
You may have noticed that FINN-POWER
has taken a departure from the traditional trade
show booth the past few years. At FABTECH
2003, our SURVIVOR jungle theme
introduced the new C5 turret punch press with
a multi-media display that incorporated the
entire booth as the stage. This year, our
FABTECH booth featured The FINN-POWER
EXPERIENCE – a reality ride that took the
guest through an imaginary trip through a Shear
Genius flexible manufacturing cell (see Special
Section beginning on page 12).
The FINN-POWER EXPERIENCE was
created to celebrate the 20th Anniversary of the
Shear Genius FMC, which helped establish
FINN-POWER as the leader in sheet metal
fabrication automation. We also wanted to take
the opportunity to do something entertaining
yet informative for our customers and other
visitors to our booth. We encourage our
customers to “think outside the box” when
choosing their fabrication equipment. We
designed the FINN-POWER EXPERIENCE to
reflect that same thinking in our trade show and
in our equipment.
In this New Year and beyond, we pledge to
continue to strive for engineering excellent in
producing the most flexible and productive
machines, cells, and systems on the market. We
also pledge to creatively participate in trade
shows as both a means to disseminate
information on our products and a celebration
of gratitude to our many customers who have
made our success possible.
Happy Holidays…
from all of us at Finn-Power
