High Performance <strong>Air</strong> Conditioning<br />

<strong>Matrix</strong> S<br />

<strong>Matrix</strong> S is the new chiller range from Liebert HIROSS, covering cooling capacities<br />

between <strong>40</strong> and <strong>350</strong><strong>kW</strong>.<br />

The units have been designed in order to satisfy the requirements of differing applications,<br />

such as technological, industrial, residential and others. To achieve this goal and<br />

cover all the requirements, the <strong>Matrix</strong> S series is available in several configurations and<br />

with many options, for example, chiller only or chiller with integrated free-cooling<br />

coil, and also base, low noise and quiet families, to satisfy the most demanding<br />

requirements for quietness.<br />

Technological Applications<br />

<strong>Matrix</strong> S is mainly characterised by unrivalled performance in low sound emissions, in<br />

particular in its Quiet version which is generally 2-3 dB(A) quieter than the average in<br />

its category. This result can be further enhanced by the use of Electronically Commutated<br />

Fans (EC Fans), reducing the power input to the unit (thus increasing the efficiency), but<br />

also giving an effective noise reduction during fan speed partialisation: in particular,<br />

decreasing the airflow by half of the nominal value, the difference compared to an analogous<br />

triac-adjusted fan is 7dB(A) and almost 15dB(A) when the reduction is 2/3 of the airflow.<br />

Reliability, always a must in Liebert-HIROSS philosophy, has been maximised for the<br />

<strong>Matrix</strong> S range, thanks to careful design, a tested and certified production process, and an<br />

accurate end-of-line test on every single unit.<br />

A design based on generously dimensioned heat exchangers, scroll compressors and<br />

high performance condenser fans, brings high efficiency performance to the <strong>Matrix</strong> S<br />

range, not only in base configuration but also in low noise and quiet versions.<br />

Starting from the standard version, it is possible to configure <strong>Matrix</strong> S chillers depending<br />

on the effective needs of the installation, customising the unit in accordance with what<br />

is really requested, providing a truly flexible unit. High performance in the areas of sound<br />

emissions and efficiency don’t prejudice the compact dimensions of the units, whose<br />

footprint is really one of the smallest in their category.


Compressors <strong>Scroll</strong><br />

In order to reach high performance levels, all <strong>Matrix</strong> S series<br />

chillers have been designed and equipped with a new generation<br />

of scroll hermetic compressors. Installed in single or tandem<br />

configuration in each refrigerant circuit, they ensure efficiency,<br />

quietness and reliability for the whole chiller unit. In<br />

partialised mode the efficiency of <strong>Matrix</strong> S is further enhanced.<br />

Fan Section<br />

Standard Fan<br />

To meet different needs arising from different applications,<br />

<strong>Matrix</strong> S is available in 3 families, depending on the<br />

maximum condenser fan speed: Base, Low Noise and<br />

Quiet. For the Base and Low Noise versions the standard<br />

axial fans grant sound emissions among the lowest in the<br />

market, thanks to sickle-shape profile blades and specifically<br />

designed nozzles, for better air circulation and reduced<br />

turbulence. The Quiet version is the unrivalled solution<br />

when low noise installations accept no compromise.<br />

Electronically Commutated Fan (EC Fan)<br />

To further enhance the sound performances, especially in partialised mode, which is the most common situation during<br />

chiller operation, all <strong>Matrix</strong> S models can be equipped with optional EC Fans: they keep the same aeraulic performance<br />

as the standard ones and are managed in modulating mode directly by the Microface controller. Depending on airflow partialisation,<br />

the fan sound emission can be reduced almost 15dB(A) compared to the same airflow using standard fans and<br />

traditional systems, such as inverter or triac regulation; moreover, even the power absorbed by the fan is lower than the<br />

standard configuration, from a 15% reduction at full speed to a 60% reduction at half speed.<br />

Freecooling<br />

Always energy conscious, Liebert-HIROSS have confirmed their commitment to energy saving with the <strong>Matrix</strong> S, taking advantage<br />

of low outdoor temperatures for cooling water and avoiding compressor operation.<br />

By using a three-port valve, the coolant is diverted to an additional freecooling coil before being fed into the evaporator. This<br />

allows savings even when the outdoor temperature is not low enough to provide the complete cooling duty, with the compressor(s)<br />

handling the remaining part of the load. In this way <strong>Matrix</strong> S can work in mechanical and/or freecooling mode<br />

depending on the thermal load and the external air temperature.<br />

Thanks to its compact design with freecooling coils integrated within the chiller frame, another advantage of the chiller with<br />

freecooling version is reduced space requirements in comparison with a conventional chiller plus a dry-cooler.<br />

Microface control, developed by Liebert-HIROSS, manages the various components involved in freecooling operation – fans,<br />

compressors, valve - enabling energy savings which can reach <strong>40</strong>%.<br />

Hydronic Kit<br />

In order to match different kinds of installations <strong>Matrix</strong> S<br />

units are available with a hydronic module, which can adapted/adjusted<br />

depending on the specific requests.<br />

It can be equipped with all or some of the following components:<br />

inertial buffer tank, 1 or 2 circulating pumps, water<br />

filter, safety valve, expansion vessel, flow switch, leaving<br />

the possibility to choose only what not already included in<br />

the system.<br />

The models in the range above 160<strong>kW</strong> can be optionally<br />

equipped with E-pump, a step-less speed pump managed<br />

by an internal inverter for constantly regulating the waterflow<br />

in the system.<br />
