self. This sincerity was played on successfully by an unscrupulous <strong>and</strong> more<br />

sophisticated agent.<br />

Inconceivable as it may seem, <strong>the</strong>se scientists who are allowing<br />

<strong>the</strong>mselves to become <strong>the</strong> pawns <strong>of</strong> trained conspirators versed in <strong>the</strong><br />

art <strong>of</strong> subversion, are wittingly or unwittingly giving <strong>the</strong>ir support<br />

to a cause which st<strong>and</strong>s <strong>for</strong> <strong>the</strong> negation <strong>and</strong> destruction <strong>of</strong> true<br />

science <strong>and</strong> what it st<strong>and</strong>s <strong>for</strong>. Dr. Ernest P. Boas, <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Columbia<br />

College <strong>of</strong> Physicians <strong>and</strong> Surgeons, who <strong>for</strong> some unexplained reason<br />

sponsored <strong>the</strong> conference, admitted never<strong>the</strong>less that in <strong>the</strong> Soviet<br />

Union-<br />

Science has become <strong>the</strong> servant <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> state to such an extent that <strong>the</strong> only<br />

true science is that approved by <strong>the</strong> leaders <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> state.<br />

Under such circumstances, he declnred, pure science cannot flourish.<br />

Describing Soviet terrorism in <strong>the</strong> field <strong>of</strong> science, Dr. H. S. l\luller,<br />

Nobel prize winner in genetics, <strong>and</strong> pr<strong>of</strong>essor <strong>of</strong> zoology at Indiana<br />

University, said:<br />

About 7 months ago <strong>the</strong> Central Executive Committee <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Soviet Union<br />

<strong>of</strong>ficially repudiated <strong>the</strong> entire science <strong>of</strong> genetics <strong>and</strong> approved in its stead a<br />

group <strong>of</strong> superstitions that hark back to ancient times.<br />

lIe described how some <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Russian scientists under Communist<br />

pressure had "confessed" <strong>the</strong>ir "guilt." O<strong>the</strong>rs were banished. In<br />

1940, N. 1. Vavilov, famous geneticist <strong>and</strong> <strong>for</strong>mer head <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Lenin<br />

Academy <strong>of</strong> Agricultural Science, was arrested. In 1942 he died in<br />

&iberia <strong>and</strong> his most important papers were destroyed.<br />

MOSCOW APPROVAL<br />

A.t all stages l\1oscow has been out.speken in its approval <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

<strong>Scientific</strong> <strong>and</strong> <strong>Cultural</strong> <strong>Conference</strong> <strong>for</strong> 'Vorlcl <strong>Peace</strong>. The fact that<br />

<strong>the</strong> following representatives <strong>of</strong> Soyict culture had been permitted to<br />

attend <strong>the</strong> conference is one indication:<br />

Alex<strong>and</strong>er A. Fadeev, secretary general <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> secretariat <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Union <strong>of</strong><br />

Soviet 'Vriters.<br />

Sergei A. Gerasimov, writer, motion-picture director, produceri president,<br />

Soviet Academy <strong>of</strong> Art.<br />

Alex<strong>and</strong>er 1. Oparin, acting secretary, Biological Sciences Section, Academy<br />

<strong>of</strong> Sciences <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> U. S. S. R.<br />

Piotr A. Pavlenko, writer, Stalin prize winner.<br />

D. D. Shostakovich, composer.<br />

1. D. Rujansky, interpreter.<br />

Mikhail E. Chiaurely, film director <strong>and</strong> producer.<br />

The fact that <strong>the</strong> following representatives <strong>of</strong> Communist-controlled<br />

Czechoslovakia were dosignated, is ano<strong>the</strong>r indication:<br />

Ferdin<strong>and</strong> Heroik, dean, at :\-Iasaryk University.<br />

Jan Boor, member, Slovak <strong>Cultural</strong> Organization.<br />

Ladislav Stoll, Rector, Academy <strong>of</strong> Political <strong>and</strong> Social Science in Prague.<br />

Jiri Hronek, secretary general, International Union <strong>of</strong> Journalists.<br />

Similnrly <strong>the</strong> sending <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> following from <strong>the</strong> Soviet puppet state<br />

<strong>of</strong> Pol<strong>and</strong> is a· mark <strong>of</strong> J\loscow approval:<br />

Stanislaw Ossowski, pr<strong>of</strong>essor <strong>of</strong> sociology, 'Varsaw University.<br />

Pawel H<strong>of</strong>fman, journalist.<br />

. Leon Kruczkowski, novelist <strong>and</strong> playwright.<br />

The l\tIoscow press <strong>and</strong> radio was eloquent in its approval <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

<strong>Scientific</strong> <strong>and</strong> <strong>Cultural</strong> Congress <strong>for</strong> vVorld <strong>Peace</strong>, inflating its significance<br />

<strong>for</strong> its own propag<strong>and</strong>istic purposes.

Brea<strong>the</strong>s <strong>the</strong>re <strong>the</strong> man, with soul so dead,<br />

Who never to himself hath said,<br />

This is my own, my native l<strong>and</strong>!<br />

Whose heart hath ne'er within him burn'd<br />

As home his footsteps he hath tum'd,<br />

From w<strong>and</strong>ering on a <strong>for</strong>eign str<strong>and</strong>?<br />

If such <strong>the</strong>re brea<strong>the</strong>, go, mark him well;<br />

For him no minstrel raptures swell;<br />

High though his titles, proud his name,<br />

Boundless his wealth as wish can claim,<br />

Despite those titles, power, <strong>and</strong> pelf,<br />

The wretch, concentred all in self,<br />

Living, shall <strong>for</strong>feit fair renown,<br />

And, doubly dying, shall go down<br />

To <strong>the</strong> vile dust, from whence he sprung,<br />

Unwept, unhonour'd, <strong>and</strong> unsung. -Scott<br />
