Residency Program Benefits
Residents and Physicians
For Zoilo Lansang, M.D., a typical
day at work may include testing
and treating a patient for strep
throat, performing a yearly physical
exam, and administering booster shots.
However, recently Dr. Lansang sat in on
a procedure with Stephen Smith, M.D.,
an orthopedic surgeon in Norfolk.
Dr. Lansang is completing his family
practice residency at Faith Regional
Health Services through the University
of Nebraska’s Rural Track Training
program. He spent his first year at
University of Nebraska Medical Center
(UNMC) reviewing an array of medical
cases and soaking in knowledge from the
experienced faculty. Now, Dr. Lansang
is finishing his residency and gaining
hands-on experience by treating patients
at Faith Regional Physician Services
Family Medicine and spending a couple
of days each week at the hospital training
in various specialties, including anesthesiology,
cardiology, emergency medicine,
general surgery, ophthalmology,
obstetrics/gynecology, orthopedics,
otolaryngology, pediatrics, psychiatry,
pulmonology/critical care, and urology.
“The residency program combines
university and rural-based training,”
explained Dr. Lansang. “During my first
year, I trained with the staff at UNMC,
which I feel is one of the best. Now I have
the opportunity to work with experienced
specialists in a rural setting, which
I feel is one of the most challenging
settings in which to practice medicine.”
Residents are not the only group
that benefits from a residency program.
Norfolk’s physicians also experience
many benefits.
“There has always been strong support
from the medical community for the
residency program in Norfolk,” said John
Huscher, M.D., a hospitalist and
coordinator of the residency program at
Faith Regional. “Medicine is a constant
learning profession. Residents not only
learn about medicine from the area
physicians; they learn how to develop
good bedside manners and patient skills,
build teamwork with nurses and other
health care professionals, as well as how a
clinic functions. Residents bring the latest
knowledge and training from medical
school to the physicians, as well as a
renewed sense of eagerness and hunger.
Plus, establishing relationships with the
residents can help bring future patient
referrals.”
The hospital and the community
benefit as well. The hospital’s
relationship with UNMC helps Faith
Regional stay on the forefront of
cutting-edge medicine. The residency
program also helps with recruitment of
family practice physicians, a growing
need in a town this size.
