The <strong>Foundation</strong> <strong>for</strong> <strong>Baltimore</strong> <strong>County</strong> <strong>Public</strong> <strong>Library</strong> mobilizes<br />
resources to support the <strong>Library</strong>’s commitment to a superior<br />
public library system where opportunities <strong>for</strong> literacy, reading<br />
enrichment, and lifelong learning are available to all.
A Message from the <strong>Foundation</strong> President<br />
The <strong>2008</strong> fiscal year will certainly go down in the history books <strong>for</strong><br />
the <strong>Foundation</strong> <strong>for</strong> <strong>Baltimore</strong> <strong>County</strong> <strong>Public</strong> <strong>Library</strong>. After working<br />
<strong>for</strong> three years to see a dream realized, we opened Storyville in<br />
February of <strong>2008</strong>. The 2,240-square-foot, child-sized village<br />
has been alive with activity ever since. With hopes to record<br />
25,000 visits in our first year of operation, we far exceeded our<br />
expectations.<br />
By June 30, <strong>2008</strong> – the end of the current fiscal year and just<br />
four months into Storyville’s run – we had welcomed over 40,000<br />
visitors! Storyville at the Rosedale <strong>Library</strong> has been so successful<br />
that <strong>Baltimore</strong> <strong>County</strong> is looking at building another Storyville on<br />
the west side of the county. A Storyville at the Woodlawn <strong>Library</strong> is<br />
currently in the planning stages. The <strong>Foundation</strong> <strong>for</strong> BCPL is proud<br />
to see this concept replicated.<br />
In addition to providing funds to BCPL <strong>for</strong> Storyville, the <strong>Foundation</strong><br />
<strong>for</strong> BCPL also provided support in <strong>2008</strong> <strong>for</strong> the My First <strong>Library</strong><br />
Card campaign by funding the purchase of backpacks that are<br />
given to children the first time they use their card. In fiscal year<br />
<strong>2008</strong>, the My First <strong>Library</strong> Card program recorded 23,052<br />
registrations, a nearly 5 percent increase from FY 2007.<br />
Additionally, over 240,000 items were circulated on My First<br />
<strong>Library</strong> Cards. Those backpacks were put to the test!<br />
We could not effectively support the ef<strong>for</strong>ts of the <strong>Baltimore</strong> <strong>County</strong><br />
<strong>Public</strong> <strong>Library</strong> without our generous donors. We are proud of the<br />
<strong>Foundation</strong>’s work over the past decade – particularly over the past<br />
three years in taking Storyville from a concept to a reality – and we<br />
are continually looking <strong>for</strong> ways to make an even greater impact.<br />

A<br />
new town officially opened in February<br />
on the county’s east side. It’s called<br />
Storyville, the colorful, child-sized village<br />
<strong>for</strong> fun and learning, specially designed<br />
and built inside the Rosedale <strong>Library</strong> to<br />
help prepare young children <strong>for</strong> school.<br />
<strong>Baltimore</strong> Sun reporter Laura Barnhardt who toured the<br />
village during a preview rightly dubbed it “a literacy<br />
wonderland,” an insightful and imaginative way to describe<br />
the layout and purpose of this unique, 2,240-squarefoot<br />
townscape of hands-on play stations <strong>for</strong> babies and<br />
preschoolers to explore with grownups at their side.<br />
Designed to simulate life in a small town, up and down<br />
Storyville Lane children and adults together mimic everyday<br />
life in the two-story house, theater, store and post office,<br />
construction site, Chesapeake Bay waterfront, baby garden<br />
and, of course, the library located in the center of town.<br />
Each of the seven themed areas, designed with the ages<br />
and stages of a child’s development and literacy skills<br />
in mind, provides age-appropriate books, materials and<br />
activities that promote language and literacy, as well as<br />
other vital school readiness skills. Parent resource materials<br />
and themed take-home kits are available <strong>for</strong> checkout.<br />
The official opening of Storyville with a ribbon-cutting<br />
ceremony February 7 culminated a dream come true<br />
<strong>for</strong> everyone at the <strong>Foundation</strong> <strong>for</strong> BCPL involved in this<br />
ambitious undertaking.<br />
A three-year project, the $700,000 town of Storyville<br />
was designed by the architectural firm of James Bradberry<br />
and Associates, constructed by Lynch Exhibits, and built<br />
with donations to BCPL‘s <strong>Foundation</strong> from private sources,<br />
individual and state funds, and a bond bill grant <strong>for</strong><br />
$250,000. By the end of FY08, Storyville had already<br />
welcomed 40,792 visitors.
Major Initiatives and Programs of the <strong>Foundation</strong> <strong>for</strong> BCPL<br />
Storyville is an interactive early<br />
literacy learning center designed<br />
specifically <strong>for</strong> children ages birth to<br />
five and their caregivers. Located in<br />
the Rosedale branch of the <strong>Baltimore</strong><br />
<strong>County</strong> <strong>Public</strong> <strong>Library</strong>, Storyville was<br />
made possible by funds raised by<br />
the <strong>Foundation</strong> <strong>for</strong> <strong>Baltimore</strong> <strong>County</strong><br />

Read Rover Plus supports BCPL’s<br />
mission to foster a lifelong love<br />
of reading in children. This is<br />
accomplished through monthly visits<br />
to licensed day care providers. Each<br />
month Read Rover Plus staff per<strong>for</strong>m<br />
a story time and help providers to<br />
check out materials. The story time<br />
programs incorporate pre-reading<br />
skills which prepare the children <strong>for</strong><br />
entering school. Also, our storytellers<br />
model successful techniques during the<br />
programs to teach day care providers<br />
important early literacy skills that they<br />
can then share with the children and<br />
their parents. Picture books, teacher<br />
resources, easy nonfiction, concept<br />
books, CDs, DVDs, and storytelling<br />
materials are all available <strong>for</strong> checkout<br />
to further support this goal.<br />
My First <strong>Library</strong> Card is a program<br />
that provides library cards <strong>for</strong> children<br />
ages birth through kindergarten in<br />
all library branches, and through<br />
cooperation with various preschool<br />
programs and <strong>Baltimore</strong> <strong>County</strong> <strong>Public</strong><br />
Schools. The <strong>Foundation</strong> <strong>for</strong> <strong>Baltimore</strong><br />
<strong>County</strong> <strong>Public</strong> <strong>Library</strong> purchases<br />
backpacks that are given to children<br />
the first time they use their card.<br />
Teen Programs at BCPL are designed<br />
to engage teens with their peers<br />
and library staff while providing a<br />
safe environment <strong>for</strong> learning and<br />
socializing. Programs range from<br />
educational – including writing<br />
workshops and tutoring sessions – to<br />
entertaining, from open mic nights to<br />
video game contests.<br />
General <strong>Library</strong> Support allows us to<br />
meet the library needs as they arise.<br />
These donations give the library the<br />
flexibility to respond to emerging<br />
needs that were not identified prior<br />
to the county budget process or to<br />
special opportunities that arise after<br />
the budget year begins.<br />
