The New Mural in Town
text & photo by Tod Imperato
Fullerton is enjoying pleasant, warm
winter days, which means residents can
take to the streets to enjoy the sunshine
and check out the city’s array of public
art. Located principally in the downtown
area, these works of art not only add a
splash of color to a stroll, but they also
offer snapshots of Fullerton’s history and
offer insights into the lives of those who
have called Fullerton home.
The most recent addition to Fullerton’s
collection of public art is Jun Blanco’s
“Fullerton: A City Rich in History”, on
the south wall of Capri Shoes at
Commonwealth and Malden avenues.
Blanco completed the mural in January.
The official unveiling will take place at the
Public art has a long history in
Fullerton. The city’s oldest mural is
“Pastoral California”, commissioned during
the Great Depression by the Works
Project Administration (WPA) and painted
in 1934 by Charles Kassler on
Fullerton Union High School’s Plummer
Auditorium. In 1939, education authorities
deemed the mural “inappropriate”
and “vulgar” and it was painted over.
The proliferation of public art in the
last decade has its roots in a 1995 survey
undertaken at the Transportation Center,
which revealed community interest in
public art. That interest solidified into
action in 1997, when community volunteers
restored Kassler’s fresco at Plummer
Auditorium. In 1998, Fullerton’s Public
Art Committee formed in cooperation
with the Parks and Recreation
Commission. That committee, which
meets periodically to discuss new projects,
now includes representatives from the
Fullerton Museum Center, the city’s
Redevelopment committees and the
Downtown Business Association.
According to Aimee Aul, the Fullerton
Museum Center’s liaison to the Public Art
Committee, the committee has met its
goal of one new project per year; in 2008,
the city dedicated three new projects.
Funding for public art comes from
grants, community organization and business
donations, and city redevelopment
funds. Nine projects from 1994-2004
were financed by the grant-funded
Citizens United for Fullerton Safety
(CUFFS), a collaboration between several
city agencies, schools and other community
organizations that aimed to provide
alternatives to gang membership and drug
use to Fullerton youth. When the CUFFS
grant expired, Project Safe picked up
where it left off, sponsoring public art
works such as “Fullerton Gold” at State
College and Yorba Linda boulevards and
providing art classes for students in
Opportunity School.
A stroll through downtown and beyond
offers residents an open-air opportunity to
explore its past and present and also celebrate
a community dedicated to bettering
itself through art and education.
