The sword fern, Polystichum munitum, is an
abundant fern of the Pacific Northwest coastal
forests, and a favourite with native plant
enthusiasts and gardeners. Sword ferns were
extensively used by First Nations in foods,
as a medicine and in a contest that trained
young men to hold their breath for a long time.
Successful contestants were chosen and would
become skilful deep-ocean divers.
