Dual function hot water tank: domestic and space
heating hot water
This system uses a residential tank-style water heater
to provide both domestic hot water and a source of heat
for hydronic (hot water) space heating systems. The
common terminology for this type of dual function
system is “Combo System.”
The hydronic space heating system can consist of
radiant floor, baseboard radiators, radiant panels, fan
coil units, or combinations of all systems mentioned
above. Heating can be zoned for individual rooms
or areas using thermostatic control. Except for fan
coil only systems, the hot water for space heating is
separated from the potable domestic water by a heat
exchanger. Therefore the water used for heating can be
mixed with anti-freeze or other chemicals to make it
suitable for snow melting if desired.
Special design considerations and sizing guidelines
must be followed when considering a Combo System.
These guidelines are outlined in documents published
by the Thermal Environmental Comfort Association
(TECA), and other associations.
NOTE: Municipal regulations should also be checked.
