FOLKECENTER
The JEEP Folkecenter is a central point for training and
demonstration. It was established to increase environmental
awareness, provide tree seedlings to communities, and offer
environmental conservation training to institutions and
communities. The site hosts demonstration sites of:
• Composted vegetable garden and fruit orchards
• Herbal Garden
• Appropriate Technologies (e.g. energy saving stoves)
• Agro-forestry and tree nurseries
• Solar energy
• Livestock (pigs and poultry)

FUTURE PLANS
JEEP will continue to:
• Develop its capacity to train groups by offering refresher
courses for volunteer trainers;
• Strengthen and develop links at local, regional and
international levels to ensure exchange of information on
sound environmental management practices applicable
to local communities; and
• Work with other NGOs and institution to develop and
disseminate more efficient technologies in charcoal
production, brick making, fish smoking and other wood
consuming industries.
WHO IS JEEP
JEEP is an indigenous environmental NGO started in 1983.
Our primary mission is to combat environmental destruction
and conserve natural resources. To meet some of its core
overhead costs, JEEP offers consultancy services to other
NGOs and institutions in training, research work and stove
construction. JEEP staff has worked with local community
groups, individuals and organizations for more than 15 years.
Staff members have disciplines in social sciences, education,
agriculture, forestry and environmental management.

WE CARRY OUT WORKSHOPS
AND AWARENESS SEMINARS
JEEP offers environmental awareness and training, as well as
research services to NGOs, CBOs and other institutions.
Since 1983, JEEP has developed the expertise to meet the
environmental training and awareness needs of Ugandans.
We have developed a special module system which addresses
the problems of rural youths, women and farmers in their
own settings. This ensures that training includes the use of
local materials and is performed in the community’s own
language. The training also is focused to respect the sociocultural
norms of the different communities.

JEEP OFFERS TRAINING IN:
• Energy conservation and alternate fuels to address the
needs of more than 90% of Ugandans using firewood as
a source of energy for cooking
• Fuel saving cook stoves which save up to 30% of fuel,
and fuel saving fish smoking kilns
• Other energy saving household technologies
• Natural pest control
• Soil and water conservation and food security
• Tree planting (nursery development and management)
• Community extension and training
• Solar energy
The training can be designed to suit the needs of the potential
audience. To date, JEEP has trained NGOs and CBOs on
behalf of MS Uganda, Plan International, UNICEF, Ecotrust,
German Development Service (DED), GTZ, and others.
Construction of a JEEP institutional stove
WE CONSTRUCT ENERGY SAVING STOVES
JEEP constructs energy saving stoves for families, schools,
health units, restaurants, prisons and barracks. The stoves:
• Eliminate smoke creating a healthier kitchen environment
• Cook faster and retain heat for long periods
• Save over 60% of firewood compared to a traditional
three stone fireplace
• Prevent accidents from open fires
Each stove is constructed to meet the customer’s individual
requirements. Approximate prices for stoves not including
saucepans or transportation are listed in the following table.

WE INSTALL SOLAR ENERGY
After June, 2007, JEEP can offer consultancy, installation,
and community training for solar energy systems. These
systems include solar panels, inverters, batteries and wiring
to provide homes and institutions with a continuous energy
supply to power: lights, phone chargers, radios, water heaters
and small appliances. JEEP currently has community solar
projects underway in Kyanja, Luwero, Tororo, and Arua.
Raising awareness on World Environment Day
WE DO RESEARCH WOR K
JEEP carries out research work from base line studies of
environmental projects, environmental impact studies, and
monitoring and evaluation. In addition, JEEP can undertake
specialized studies like inventorying of natural forests
(biodiversity).
Previous work done by JEEP includes:

in Luweero district sponsored by Plan International
• Biodiversity inventory of Buso recreation forest in
Mpigi district for Tropical Environment Foundation
