FROM THE PASTOR’S PEN. . . THANK GOD THAT THE CHURCH IS GROWING YOUNG!
“Guard the good treasure entrusted to you , with the help of the Holy Spirit living in us.” 2 Timothy 1:14
“Go and make disciples of all nations, . . teaching them to observe . .” Matthew 28:19-20
This coming Sunday is
not only Super Bowl Sunday (a day for Saints and . . Sinners? and a touch football
duel between our youth and their parents at Spartan High at 2:00 p.m.; y’all come!),
and not only SOUPer Bowl Sunday (with a special offering for Haiti at each
service; and on Saturday, a mission project)
and not only Youth Sunday (with our youth leading worship),
but it is also Boy Scout 100th Anniversary Sunday (the 100th anniversary of
Girl Scouts will be in March, 2012). How amazing – our congregation has
trained almost 150 Eagle Scouts!
The ministry to children and youth in our congregation has always been strong, but
there has never been a time when the strength of this program, and the participation
of our youth in multiple programs of Christian nurture and character is as vital as it
is today.
Many parents simply do not realize that, in past generations, Christian faith was learned
in our nation as much by “osmosis” (drinking in the atmosphere of the surrounding
culture) as by formal education. You became Christian and developed Christian character
not just through formal training, but because everyone (more or less) did it.
This is simply not the case today. What our children learn most easily by osmosis from
the surrounding culture is that everything is relative, that one belief is as good as
another, and that moral choices are more a matter of convenience and economics
than following the law of God (for example, I cannot tell you how often I have heard
“we decided to move in together and save rent”).
Without a deliberate attempt by Christian parents to resist, challenge, and especially
provide alternatives to this post-Christian culture, our children will grow up only with
enough Christian faith to inoculate them against the real thing, but not enough to give
them the life, faith and character for which our Lord Jesus Christ lived and died.
So a word to youth, parents, grandparents:
To Youth – Thank you for the life and energy you bring to all our lives. Above all else,
seek Jesus Christ as your model and friend. What you learn in Church and Scouts will
make you rich in the things that really matter and that are valuable to God and others.
To Parents – Our children grow up quickly. There will never be another opportunity
to share the faith with them than today. Be deliberate in planning your children’s
participation and growth in faith. Persevere.
To Grandparents (and Parents) – Keep using your resources and prayers to build up
our youth. The combination of programs from Sunday School to Youth Group to
Mission trips to Scouting is where lives will be shaped FOR EVER. Our role in this
is vital.
Blessings always,
David

GREEN TIP FOR
STEWARDSHIP
Plastic Bags Tips:
Did you know that it takes
about 1,000 years for plastic
bags to biodegrade?
Plastic bags distributed
at shopping stores create
environmental problems:
pollution, oil consumption,
overfi lled landfi lls, and
animal deaths.
Remember to carry your
reusable bags wherever
you do any shopping.
The grocery store is
the most obvious place,
but remember those
bags when going to the
pharmacy, the farmer’s
market, clothing stores, etc.
If you don’t have bags to
use, buy one at First Pres.!
Child Nutrition on
the Haitian Border
WITNESS
SEASON 2010
Each February FPC celebrates
Witness Season, our annual
campaign to support an
international mission project.
This year we will raise funds for
the Dominican Republic Child
Nutrition Project on the border
of Haiti, a program of Solid
Rock Missions
(www.solidrockmissions.org).
This public health program
breaks the cycle of malnutrition
on the DR/Haitian border by
providing food, medical care, and
education to families in extreme
poverty. In the aftermath of
the Haitian earthquake, more
children than ever are in need
of basic support.
