BLESSINGS TO COME
For the Pages, it all began in December when my sister and I chose a strategy for
handling holiday stress. We decided to “choose the happy” whenever we could –
the happy card, the happy gift, the happy menu. In the middle of stress, we wanted
smiles on our faces.
By January though, my mantra was gone, but God had not forgotten. In the middle
of a hectic week, I happened to visit Nancy. At her door, Ziva, the world’s best
cockapoo, greeted me. Ziva’s joy was contagious and lifted my spirits. I talked
about her for days and fi nally dared to say to my husband Ned, “I think it might be
time to get a dog.” God was at work, because Ned thought for a while and then
said, “Let’s look into it.” Maybe it was time to mix it up and add some fun and
chaos to our routine.
Not soon after, Nike, the Sports Dog, came swooshing into our lives with the
waggiest tail ever. Our son Eli had longed for a dog, so it was heartwarming to
make his dream come true, but the best surprise is how much I’ve loved it. There
are so many blessings beyond the playful love of a puppy. As a family, there is
more laughter, more time together, and more playing, a true treat for our serious
minded clan. Of course, having a puppy is a lot of trouble – baby gates to climb
over, 2 months up in the night to let him out, a 5:30 a.m. wake up cry, etc. -- but
sometimes blessings involve effort.
Here at First Pres, it’s time to mix it up too, to add a little fun to our serious minded
clan. This summer we’re having Sunday School at 9:00 a.m., Worship at 10:00 a.m.
in the sanctuary and in Morning Song, and then Fellowship at 11:00 a.m.. That
means we are going to linger a while -- chatting, laughing, and playing. There will
be a chance to visit over muffi ns and lemonade, eat brunch, BBQ, and ice cream,
watch kids play, throw horse shoes, hula hoop, and slip on slip’n slides. (Oh my,
there will be stories to tell!)
Sometimes fellowship is an afterthought, but remember faith has always been about
community. Since Genesis, God has given relationship to us and has wanted his
children to have relationship with one another. Caring and sharing are how we grow
in faith and see God. Even Jesus surrounded himself with disciples and he himself
gave us a new command to love one another. Remember Jesus shows us the Way to
abundant life so let’s get with it! Summer is shaping up to be full of blessings.
Grace and peace,
Banner Sponsorship Form
First Presbyterian Church will hold its annual Kirkin’ o’ the Tartans Worship
Service in October of 2013. At our Kirkin’ service, we remember ancient times,
as well as past and present kith and kin, while asking God’s help and blessings in
the future through special music and a procession of bagpipes and tartans.
The construction of the staffs and stands as well as the sewing of the banners
will be performed by volunteers, but we need sponsors to help with the cost of
purchasing the tartan fabric and staff materials. The cost of a banner is $115.
The tartan fabrics are ordered from Scotland, so we need your payment no
later than Wednesday, July 31.
Some clans have multiple patterns available. If you want a particular pattern,
please indicate below. Otherwise, we will order the most common pattern for
that clan.
You will receive an acknowledgement of your order and payment.
At the conclusion of the service, the tartan banners will be given to the sponsor
for storage or display until the next Kirkin’. Only the staffs and banner stands
will remain at the church.
Executive Presbyter Answers Call to
Interim Pastorate
Since 1999, George Wilkes has served as Executive Presbyter of Foothills Presbytery,
of which our congregation is a part. After 14 years of outstanding ministry in this
role, George has accepted a call to serve as Interim Pastor at the Presbyterian Church
of Manning, SC. George’s service with Foothills Presbytery will conclude on May 31.
In a letter to the Presbytery, George writes, “I have always believed that the best
executives are pastors who leave the parish and come and serve the presbytery for
a while and then return to the parish…I have always felt blessed to serve Foothills
Presbytery…I have always sensed Christ’s presence in our midst, and I believe Christ
is in this transition as well.”
Among many other duties, George has shepherded our own congregation through
pastoral transitions since 1999. George has been a friend and guide to First
Presbyterian, and he will be missed. Please pray for George and his family as they
make this change, and please thank George for his years of service as you have the
opportunity.
