4TH QUARTER
2011-2012
Principal’s corner
We are in the home stretch of the 2011-2012 school year. It has been a great year and I
would like to show my appreciation and gratitude to each and every one of you for all of the support
that you have provided your children this year.
A big Thank You goes out to our PTO for the work they have done this year in supporting the
staff and students of Crystal Middle School. To begin with, they have provided staff appreciation at
the monthly staff meetings and have provided lunch at the beginning of the year and will close out the
year with a staff appreciation luncheon. They donated daily snacks and some fantastic prizes for our
CST raffle this year. The PTO donated an IPod Touch with a $30 gift card, a Kindle Fire with a $30
gift card, a 22 inch TV with a $35 gift card, and thirty $10 gift cards. The students that won the
prizes were THRILLED!! Our 8 th grade promotion is also going to be a big success since our PTO has
purchased leis for each promoting student and they are providing cake and refreshments following
the promotion ceremony. Thank you, Dominique Vazquez our PTO President, Michelle Walker our PTO
treasurer, and Patricia Munger our PTO secretary.
Our monthly Coffee with the Principal this year has been a success thanks to the Suisun
Starbucks and their monthly donations. We are looking forward to continuing this monthly meeting
format next school year. If you haven’t attended a Coffee with the Principal yet, our last meeting will
be on May 18 th at 8:30 AM in the library.
We have only four weeks of school remaining for the 2011-2012 school year. We are going to
ensure that our students continue to receive rigorous instruction these last few weeks to prepare
them for success in the next grade level.
1
I would like to wish all of our promoting eighth graders success in their endeavors in high
school and beyond. I will miss each of you, but I know that you will make the Crystal Family proud!!
Congratulations!!
FROM THE ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL’S DEN
It is hard to believe that the year is almost over; time sure flies! Reflecting on this year, it
has become apparent that Middle School years are the most important in a student’s education.
Why? Having been at the high school level for ten years, it was evident that students came
prepared for a successful 4 years of high school or they did not. The students who came prepared for
high school knew what it took to be successful, while the others got further and further behind. As a
result, the latter did not always graduate. They learned too late in the game that those 4 years were
serious. They learned too late in the game that you either graduate or you don’t. They learned too late
in the game that those 4 years were no GAME at all.
And, because of that we realize the importance of Middle School years in your child’s future.
As I stated in the first newsletter of the year, it takes a Village to raise a child. So let’s work
together to make OUR children reach their full potential. Let’s ensure that we send OUR children to
high school prepared to reach their full potential. Let’s send OUR children with the tools, habits and
skills they need to graduate. We are dedicated to do everything we can to help ensure your child is
successful.
Though it is the end of the school year, it is never too late. At the least, we can all start with
good habits for next year. Here are some simple ways you can help:
Agenda
Students MUST write in their agenda daily.
Students should have teacher’s initial agenda so parents know it is accurate.
Parents check agendas daily.
Parents make sure that all work and studying is done based on the agenda.
Weekly Progress Sheets
In the front office we have Weekly Progress Report sheets. Have your child take one to
his/her teachers every Friday to check progress in all classes.
6 TH GRADE TEAM
Wow! It is amazing that we are coming to the end of our 6 th grade adventure. We are working on
academics right up to the minimum day on June 7. Please make sure your student has plenty of supplies to get
through the end of the school year.
In Math we are finishing geometry, along with some concept review and preview of 7 th grade
Mathematics. English Arts classes are reading stories, novels and working on writing. Science classes continue
to focus on topics of Earth Science. History students are studying the ancient civilizations of Greece and Rome.
We wish you a great end of the school year and a wonderful summer!
7 TH GRADE PRIDE
By Beth Robinson
Seventh graders did a great job focusing during their CST testing this year. It was evident that
students used successful test taking strategies, such as eliminating incorrect answers, underlining important
information, and double-checking their work. We look forward to seeing their scores at the end of summer.
As the year comes to a close, it is important for students to stay focused. Students are still learning
new concepts in many of their classes. English classes are analyzing novels, science classes are working on
projects, math classes are focusing on interactive projects, and history is applying how the past affects the
present. Seventh graders will be taking final exams and placement tests for next year within the last two
weeks of school.
Students should still be coming to school prepared for each class. Pencils, paper, and coloring supplies
are a must. Students have nightly homework and should be using their agendas to record their assignments.
Parents can check student agendas to be sure their child is doing all assignments. Green sheets are also
available for students to give to teachers every Friday in order to check their current grades. If you have not
received your online family code to access our grading system, please contact the office. Our online Parent
Portal is an excellent way for parents to stay up to date on student progress.
Seventh graders are excited for our end of the year field trip to see “The Sound of Music” at Solano
Community College. This will be an opportunity for students to enjoy a cultural activity while learning about
history and analyzing plot and character development. Seventh graders will also experience their annual field
day on June sixth. Students should be prepared to get wet and have fun!
We have had a great group of seventh graders this year and look forward to seeing them again next
year. They have worked hard and learned many valuable lessons. Thank you, Parents, for all of your
encouragement, hard work, and support. May you have a fun-filled, restful summer before we begin the next
school year.
8 TH GRADE MESSAGE
As the school year comes to a close we know that your sons and daughters are focused on things like 8 th
grade promotion, the 8 th grade Discovery Kingdom trips, and summer fun. But as parents, we know that you are
looking forward to the transition to high school, and believe us, your children are already thinking about it too.
We thought we’d provide some tips for helping your student move to the new setting.
Transitioning from middle school to high school can be difficult. New high school students have to learn the
layout of a new school, have to select courses, and have to deal with a certain level of anxiety about making the
transition to high school. In this article, we describe ten things parents can do to help make the transition to
high school from middle school less difficult for new high school students.
Tip #1 - Learn the Layout of the School
A lot of the anxiety that new high school students feel comes from having to navigate a new
environment. Most middle schools keep students in the same area for most of the day. High school may require
students to walk back and forth between classes all day. If possible, try to get your new high school student's
schedule and walk through his or her daily schedule with him or her a few days before classes begin. This will
reduce anxiety about high school anxiety.
Tip #2 - Look at Available Courses
Your new high school student may have already selected courses. If possible, look at the list of available
courses at the high school with your student. Make a list of the courses that interest him or her and see what
prerequisites there are. This will allow your new high school student to make the most of his or her high school
experience.
Tip #3 - Begin Considering Careers
Careers are often determined by college major, which is often determined by high school education and
courses. A high school freshman does not need to know what he or she wants to do with his or her life, but
having a list of several things that are of interest can help to make course selection easier. Aspiring physicians
will want to take as many science courses as possible, whereas students that wish to be artists will want to take
courses like drawing, graphic arts, and sculpture. Wise course selection now can ease further studies.
Tip #4 - Emphasize the Importance of High School
You should know that colleges might make decisions about admittance or scholarships based on high
school grades. Your high school student should know this as well. Try not to pressure or frighten your new high
school student, but make sure that he or she understands the importance of high school from the beginning, not
when he or she is a junior.
Tip #5 - Go To Any New Student Nights
ENGLISH DEPARTMENT
The English teachers are all very pleased with the way our students showed Cougar PRIDE while taking
the CST. Students were focused on the test and using testing strategies to answer the questions to the best
of their ability. Everyone, although grateful testing is done, is looking forward to seeing the results in August.
As the end of the year is approaching, many teachers are using novels to drive their instruction. In Ms.
Merrick's classes students are reading The Diary of Anne Frank which leads to many discussions on tolerance
and equality. Students are also preparing for the transition to high school.
Mrs. Grover's students are working on a unit about heroes. They just finished reading Beowulf and will
begin reading the Lightening Thief. Students will create a product based on their concept of what their
definition of a hero is.
Mr. Hurd's English classes are reading the novel Hush by Jaqueline Woodson. The honors English class
is reading the novel The Martian Chronicles by Ray Bradbury. All students are all practicing various reading
strategies using the reciprocal teaching method. Students are also working on a current event project using the
newspaper.
In Mrs. Hadid's 8th class, students are working on a research project/presentation on different college
majors while her 7th grade class is studying critical media literacy.
In the sixth grades, Ms Collin's students have just started reading Schooled and will finish up the year
reading Seedfolks. While Mrs. McCormick's 6th graders are reading The Great Gilly Hopkin's, Mrs. Lewis's
classes are reading the novel Joey Pigza Swallowed the Key. And Mrs. Neal's classes are reading Hatchet. All
sixth grade students are also writing a compare contrast essay in the last weeks of the year.
HISTORY DEPARTMENT
As we approach the end of the school year, it is time for your child to return their History textbook
that was assigned to them in August. Please make sure your child turns their book to their History teacher.
The cost to replace a lost or damaged book ranges from $60 to $65!
If you have questions regarding end of the year grades, please email your child’s teacher.
It is hard to believe, but this year’s Science Showcase will be held on May 30, 2012 from 5:30-6:30pm in
the multi-purpose room.
Mark your calendar and be sure to check out all of the amazing 7 th and 8 th grade science projects our
Crystal Scientists have completed this year.
The 7 th grade Crystal Middle School Scientists have been staying busy learning all about
human anatomy. They have been studying the structure and function of the human body. Students are learning
about how cells, tissues, and organs are all interrelated to make living organisms like us. A Family Life and a
cow’s eye dissection will bring this school year to an end.
The 8 th Grade Crystal Middle School Scientists in Ms. Kasperson’s and Ms. Spinelli’s classes have been
working on the scientific method in class and at home. Students are planning and conducting their own
experiments or building models all over the city of Suisun. Students in Ms. Asmundson’s class are working on
creating their own astronomy games. A lot of great science going on! All 8 th grade classes will end the year with
a Family Life unit.
Once again we have done a lot of good science investigations here at Crystal. Thank you for all of your
continued support with our science program!
Enjoy your summer and we will be here ready to get right back to studying science in August!
SCIENCE CLUB
We have had a lot of fun doing science lab activities after school this year. We hope to see all of our
club members and any other students that are interested in science next school year. Keep questioning,
exploring and investigating! Have a great summer!!!!!
MATH DEPARTMENT
by Beth Robinson
The end of the year is a fun time for our math classes. Students are able to look back and see how far
they have come over the course of the year. To finish off the year, they will be doing multiple hands on, project
based activities that will solidify their knowledge and begin to prepare them for next year.
Pre-Algebra classes can expect to lean about transformations, such as reflecting, rotating, or
translating shapes. Student can be creative as they learn how to manipulate figures on a plane. Pre-Algebra
students will also be reviewing important concepts that will help prepare them for next year, such as ratios,
percents, decimals, and fractions. They can look forward to applying these concepts in a new way. Lastly, they
will be reviewing graphing and comparing linear equations to quadratics in various graphing activities.
Algebra Readiness students will also be reviewing any areas of weaknesses and improving their skills.
They can expect to see more real-life activities that connect with the new common core math standards. They
will learn in a more project-centered environment for the last part of the year.
Algebra students will be looking into more geometric concepts as they prove the Pythagorean Theorem
and the distance formula. They will be comparing similar triangles, and then moving on into probabilities of
events.
Geometry students will continue to study three-dimensional figures. Students will be creating
orthographic drawings and analyzing nets of different figures. They will also be determining surface area and
volumes of these objects and creating replicas in a creative way.
All math students will have a final exam at the end of the school year, so please make sure students stay
prepared for class and are continuing to come to school ready to learn.
MUSIC NOTES FROM CRYSTAL
The Crystal Music Program has expanded this Spring. In January we celebrated Chinese New Year’s
Year of the Dragon by holding a lunchtime performance with the Band playing Chinese Music, a Lion Dance and
Chinese kites flying in the Multipurpose Room and outside
Our Guest Artist for January was Dominic Blas (cousin of one of our students) who sang original songs and
played guitar. He has since moved to Los Angeles to continue recording CDs. We also had Vivian McLaughlin
from Disney’s TV show “Out of the Box” as Guest Artist this month. She was raised in Vacaville and performs
locally as well as teaches theater to students.
In February, we took all the music classes to see “Ain’t Misbehavin’” at Solano College to celebrate Black
History Month. We also did a concert featuring Gospel style Choir Music, and ran into a serious problem with
7
the sound system which was very, very disappointing for the students, parents and audience. Thanks to our own
“Guitar Fairy” (April Jones), who was able to fix it, we now have a working sound system again.
During the February Concert, we had to split it in 2 parts due to the huge audience we had in December.
The Choir, Guitars and Ukulele’s performed along with our Dance Club doing an African dance called “Lindgen go
Mangiani” from Gambia with costuming made by Alison Madigan our Costume Mistress. The 2 Bands, Recorders
and Dance Club performed the second night.
On February 24 th we had the “Trio 7” perform on their 7 string guitars doing classical, contemporary,
pop, videogame and TV songs. Matthew Grasso, professional guitarist and college professor heads the trio and
was a Crystal student when he was in Elementary School. Matthew Grasso was our Guest Artist for February.
The Trio was incredible and we wish more people had joined us for the event.
March brought the District Honor Choir Festival at Rodriguez High. Crystal took 27 students to
perform in this event along with the other Middle Schools and High Schools that have Choirs. Our students had
memorized 5 songs in 2 and 3 part harmony so it was a real challenge. Next we did the District Honor Band
Festival at Fairfield High and we sent 24 band members from Crystal who had learned 5 difficult songs and
performed with the hundreds of other band.
YEARBOOKS
By Lisa Grover, Beth Ellis, Melissa Apostolos, Paul Walpole
Students can still purchase a yearbook but quantities are very low. The cost is 50.00 and the price will
not increase. The eighth grade students can pick up their yearbooks on Friday, June 1 after school at the ASB
store windows. The seventh and eighth grade students will be able to pick up their yearbooks on June 4 after
school at the ASB store windows.
SHORT-TERM INDEPENDENT STUDY
By Tammy Collin and Lynne Clyma
Short-Term IDS is a way to satisfy the needs of family and school if you are planning a family vacation.
The State recognizes short-term IDS as a legitimate program and absences are excused if the family and
student fulfill the requirements of the program.
Crystal’s program requirements are:
1. Student must apply for IDS at least 5 school days before the absence. This allows teachers time to
prepare assignments.
2. Students are required to turn in all work on the morning of the contract’s specified student return.
3. The student’s absence must be at least 5 days in duration.
Absences will not be excused if the above requirements are not completed.
8
Please contact the Attendance Office at (707) 435-5841 if you anticipate an absence of 5 or more days for
your student.
