Mazda’s MX-5 GT
Track-focused 153kW roadster to storm Goodwood
By DAVID HASSALL
MAZDA is set to produce a hot trackfocused
version of its iconic MX-5
sportscar in limited numbers, but the
British-modifi ed car may not come to
Australia.
Presented as the Mazda MX-5 GT
Concept with a view to assessing
customer interest, the modifi ed roadster
will debut this weekend at the famed
Goodwood Festival of Speed in the UK.
British race engineering company
Jota Sport, which regularly races cars at
Le Mans, has squeezed another 35kW
from the standard MX-5’s 2.0-litre fourcylinder
petrol engine, taking it from
118kW to some 153kW using lessons
learned from its UK race program.
The exhaust note has been enhanced
by the fi tment of a sports exhaust system
with a central twin tailpipe.
six-speed manual gearbox.
aerodynamic assistance is provided
by a carbon-fi bre front splitter, a rear
diffuser and a boot spoiler.
Racing-style Recaro seats have been
fi tted to hold the occupants against
the extra side forces and the interior
also features a number of carbon-fi bre
With a view to customers looking to
Hyundai Veloster + Coupe
FOR about the same price as a mid-specced Mazda3, buyers can
choose an array of Veloster models from Hyundai, complete with
head-turning styling and the novelty of three doors plus a hatchback.
Not for the wallfl ower, this Korean front-driver is a welcome addition
to the moribund sporty coupe market, offering distinctive design,
practical packaging, and undeniable value for money. Tested in
up-spec Veloster + guise, it is a dynamic drive to boot, but a bit
more oomph wouldn’t go astray.
NEW CITROEN SEDANS
CITROEN is boosting its push into
developing markets with two new small
sedans, the C-Elysee and the C4 L – but
both will be left-hand-drive only and
therefore not on the cards for Australia.
China was the target for Citroen’s
sedan version of the original C4, which
was launched in 2006, and the two new
entries are a direct response to the global
small sedan market having grown to
more than 20 million units in 2011.
