At least eight 2-hour final papers.<br />

A thesis, i.e. a study under direction <strong>of</strong> a special topic<br />

using relevant published material and presented in<br />

written form. Work on this thesis normally starts<br />

early in February.<br />

A selection <strong>of</strong> at least eight Part IV topics. The topics <strong>of</strong>fered may be from any branch<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>Mathematic</strong>s including Pure <strong>Mathematic</strong>s, Applied <strong>Mathematic</strong>s, Statistics, Computer<br />

Science and Operations Research as exemplified in the publication <strong>Mathematic</strong>al Reviews.<br />

Summaries <strong>of</strong> topics are described in the following section <strong>of</strong> the <strong>Handbook</strong>, but the<br />

Department should be consulted for further details, including the current list <strong>of</strong> suitable<br />

topics from other Departments. (Students who have passed Computer Science III or<br />

Statistics III may, with the permission <strong>of</strong> the Head <strong>of</strong> Department, select some <strong>of</strong> their<br />

topics <strong>of</strong> study from courses given in those departments.)<br />
