LucAN,an inland town and parish in Newcastle barony, <strong>Dublin</strong> county, seven miles W. from <strong>Dublin</strong>,comprising<br />

| to area of 1,126 acres. Population, 523. It is partly the property of the Colthurst Vesey family, and<br />

partly the property of the Messrs. Shackleton, who have recently purchased the Petty Canon lands from the<br />

Representatives of the late J. Grandon, esq. The town is prettily situated in a fertile vale, on the south<br />

bank of the River LifFey, which is here crossed by a stone bridge of one arch, and consists of one wide angular<br />

street of small but neat houses and cottages, most of which are let in summer fco visitors and invalids. Its<br />

! uhlic buildings are. the Parish Church, a neat structure with a tower and spire, a large new Roman Catholic<br />

Church, a Sisters of Mercy Convent, a Wesieyan Methodise Church, and a Presbyterian Church. It lias<br />

U Dispensary, a Lending Library, Church and National Schools. It is a Chief Constabulary Police Station,<br />

tod Petty Sessions are held every alternate Tuesday. In the grounds of Weston Park is the well-known and

much-frequented waterfall, called the Salmon Leap ; which consists of a succession of rocky ledges on the Liffey,<br />

over which the fish dart at one hound. It forms a beautiful cascade, the picturesque effect of which is greatly<br />

increased by the rich and lofty wooded banks of the river, and the adjoining tastefully embellished demesne of<br />

Leixlip Castle.<br />

MALAHIDE.<br />

MALAHIDE, a maritime town and parish in Coolock barony, <strong>Dublin</strong> county, nine miles N. from <strong>Dublin</strong>, comprising<br />

an area of 1*126 acres. Population, (].Y6. The town is situated on a narrow inlet of the sea, and on<br />

the Great Northern railway, of which it forms the fourth station from <strong>Dublin</strong>. The Castle is & large square<br />

building, Hanked by lofty circular towers, and stands on a high limestone rock, commanding a line view of the<br />

town and bay. Of the original Castle little remains but the site, and that has been greatly enlarged and<br />

improved by the present Lord Talbot de Malahide; the principal front is embattled, and the "main entrance,<br />

which is under a splendid Gothic porch, is defended by two circular towers. The grand hall is roofed with<br />

richly-carved ancient Irish oak, lighted by three large windows, wiih a gallerv at the end. Among the manv<br />

splendid apartments the Custic contains, the most curious is that called the *? oak chamber," ceiled and wainscoted<br />

with richly-carved oak, in compartments, containing scriptural devices, and lighted with a pointed window of<br />

stained glass. In the drawing-room, among other valuable paintings, there is a small altar-niece p,unt«jd l>T<br />

Albert I hirer, said to have been originally in" the oratory of Mary Queen of Scots, at llolvrood House. Tlr;<br />

demesne is adorned with groups of stately trees, and the grounds 7 and gardens of the Castle" are beautifully laid<br />

out. It is open daily to visitors. The town contains manv handsome private residences which are permanent 1 }'<br />

occupied. The only public buildings are the Church, a neat edifice of the later English stvle, which has recently<br />

been enlarged ami restored, and a handsome Roman Catholic Church. It has a iarge and handsome Hotel, a<br />

Constabulary Police and a Coast-guard Station, a National School, and a Parochial'Church of Ireland School.<br />

Off the coast there are profitable beds of oysters, the property of the Lord of the Manor.<br />

PALMERSTOWN, or PALMERSTON, a parish and village in Uppercross barony, <strong>Dublin</strong> county, five miles westfrom<br />

the General Post Office, <strong>Dublin</strong>, comprising an area of l,51o acres. Population of the parish, 1,511. It is<br />

situated on the river Liffey and road to Lacan, and contains iron and lead works, and oil and dye-stud<br />

mills. The village consists of small humble dwellings, irregularly built, a Roman Catholic chapel, and<br />

Constabulary Police station. The Great <strong>South</strong>ern and "Western line of railway passes through the parish.<br />

In the vicinity there are several handsome seats and villas, the principal of which is Palmerstown House, a<br />

seat of the Earl of Donoughmore, erected by his ancestor, the Right Hon. T. II. Hutchinson, when Secretary<br />

for Ireland. It is a spacious mansion in an elevated situation, commanding- line views. A fair for horses<br />

and cattle, well frequented, takes place on 21st August.<br />

RATHCOOLE AND SAGGARD.<br />

RATHCOOLE, an inland town and parish in Newcastle barony, <strong>Dublin</strong> county, 10 miles S.W. from <strong>Dublin</strong>, comprising<br />

an area of 4,705 acres. Population, 459. The town, which was anciently called Radcull, is situated<br />

upon the road to Naas, and consists of one street, about a quarter of a mile in length, chiefly of small houses<br />

and cabins, irregularly built. The only public building is the Parish Church, a neat plain edifice. It has a<br />

Dispensary. It is the head station of the Constabulary force of the district of Uppercross. About two miles<br />

raid a half N.W. from Rathcoole is the parish and village of Neiccastle, comprising an area of 4,2b'3 acres.<br />

Population, 1,1 OIL It is situated on the Grand Canal. The village was formerly a borough, having a<br />

portrieve and burgesses under charter of James I., and prior to the Union, sent two members to the Irish<br />

parliament. The Church is an ancient picturesque edifice, covered with ivy, having a fine eastern window.<br />

The Roman Catholic Church is a neat building, with a belfry. There is a Dispensary and National Schools<br />

Petty Sessions are held every alternate Friday.<br />

RATHFARNHAM, a parish and village in Uppercross and Rathdown baronies, <strong>Dublin</strong> county, four miles south<br />

from the General Post Office, <strong>Dublin</strong>, comprising an area of 2,581 acres. Population, 5,555. It is situated on the<br />

road to Whitechurch, and near where the Military-road commences that crosses the mountains into Wieklow<br />

county. The village consists of one long irregular street: the Church on the right side, with a tower and spire.<br />

The Roman Catholic Church is a large building. The Loretto Convent, in the vicinity is a modern brick building,<br />

attached to which there is an elegant chapel, a female free school, also a ladies'' boarding and day school. There is<br />

also at Firhouse a Carmelite Convent, also a Dispensary, a Petty Sessions Court-house, and District Constabulary<br />

Police Station. A fair is held on July 10. The bridge of Rathfarnham, over the river Dodder, is several hundred<br />

yards from the village, the approach to which is rising ground, thickly shaded in summer by the trees of<br />

the demesnes on each side. The neighbourhood abounds in pretty seats and villas, commanding rich views<br />

of the <strong>Dublin</strong> mountains and bay. The castle of Rathfarnham was built by Archbishop Loftus in the rei£, r n of<br />

Elizabeth. One of the entrances to the demesne, fronting the Dodder, is in the style of a Roman triumphal arch.<br />

The entrance to the castle is by a portico of eight Doric columns that support a dome painted in fresco with the signs<br />

of the zodiac. Ballvboden, a village in the parish of Whitechurch, is about one and a quarter miles farther on,<br />

and comprises an area of two acres. Population, 252.<br />

TALLAGHT.<br />

TALLAGHT, an inland town and parish in Uppercross barony, <strong>Dublin</strong> county, seven miles S.W. by W. from<br />

Dablin, comprising an area of 21,868 acres. Population of parish, 4,921 ; of town, 312, inhabiting 57<br />

houses. The town is situated on the road to Blessington, and the parish extends from near Templeogue to<br />

Crumlin, and on its southern side to Brittas, including Brittas Ponds, to Balrothery hill on the river Dodder,<br />

to the Green hills at its western extremity. The southern portion forms the range called the Tallaght Hills,<br />

and commands magnificent views of the bay and vale of <strong>Dublin</strong>. The church, a little above the town, dedicated<br />

to St. Maeirune, is a modern building in the pointed style. At Firhouse there is a convent of Discalced<br />

Carmelites, and at Mount Anne a small monastery of the same order, and a Priory of the Dominican order at<br />

St. Mary's. In the town there is a Dispensary, and there are National and Parochial Schools. It is a Constabulary<br />

Police station, and Petty Sessions are held every alternate Wednesday. There are several paper<br />

and flour mills in the parish.<br />
