3.8 FRAMEWORK CONVENTION
ON TOBACCO CONTROL
Our view
We believe in regulation that balances the
interests of all sections of society, including
tobacco consumers and the tobacco industry.
Given the risks associated with tobacco
products, we acknowledge the right of
Government to enact tobacco regulation that
is reasonable. Tobacco regulation has the
important objective of reducing the health
impact of tobacco use.
In 2003, the Government of Trinidad and
Tobago became a signatory to the Framework
Convention on Tobacco Control (FCTC). In
August 2004, the FCTC was ratifi ed by this
country.
We respect the role that Government must
play in bringing legislation to reduce the
negative impact of tobacco on public health.
A basic component however in public policy
creation, is consultation with those sectors
and organizations that might be affected by
the decisions taken and our Company, as a
stakeholder, has the right to make its points
of view heard before the authorities. To
this end, West Indian Tobacco is willing to
actively participate in processes of analysis
and discussion to enable the defi nition of an
integrated and reasonable regulatory framework
for the tobacco industry. Additionally, we
consider dialogue and our commitment to listen
and respond to society’s reasonable expectations
to be a means of complementing, through selfregulation,
our framework of action.
