Battery neglect
increases calls
The British Columbia Automobile
Association has found
that 50 percent of their
Emergency Road Service calls
in 1979 were due to neglected
batteries, even those that are
low-maintenance or servicefree.
Leaving lights on as well as
Moose or defective alternator
; belts and battery cables are
the main causes of battery
failure for all types of batter-
! ies.
- Winter, with its bad weather
and low temperatures,
creates more demands on
your car's battery. To make
sure you get a charge out of
your battery, follow a regular
maintenance schedule that
includes battery care.
A battery that does not
crank the engine over does
not necessarily mean a batter
that has to be replaced.
In winter, not only will a
battery require more energy
for starting, but with cold,
foggy days and early darkness,
operating the heater and
lights will create an additional
drain of energy.
A lot of stalled cars with
low battery voltage, however,
require only a simple battery
recharging at a relatively low
cost. In addition, cold weather
1 causes the battery's efficiency
to drop. ,
If a fully-charged battery
. operates at top efficiency at
; 25 degrees Celcius, it would
• only operate at about 65
•percent efficiency at 0 de-
" grees.
These are some of the
- reasons why it is even more
crucial in winter to inspect
fluid level regularly, keep the
battery free of acid corrosion
build-up, and make sure cable
connections and hold-down
clamps are tight and clean.
One of the main causes of
conventional battery failure is
. not adding water when needed.
Battery fluid consists of a
• solution of sulfuric acid and
! water called electrolyte.
The only way to lose the
sufuric acid portion is by
spillage or leakage, so make
sure your battery hold-down
• clamps are neither too loose—
.'which could allow the battery
to shift, or too tight—which
could crack the battery case.
The water portion of the
solution in conventional batteries,
however, is subject to
normal evaporation.
So, at least once a month,
check the level of the electrolyte
in the battery and if low,
add water (distilled is best,
but OJK. to use clean tap
water.
Before starting your check,
remember that the electrolyte
solution as well as the gases it
produces, which extend outside
the battery case, are
highly combustible.
Don't bring sparks or open
flames, lighted cigarettes, or
any other tire source near the
battery.
Also, be extremely careful
with watches or jewelry, such
as bracelets, rings, etc., near
the battery; they are all
capable of shorting out and
could cause injury. Safety
glasses are also recommended.
; To check the fluid level,
bring the car to a well-ventilated
area and turn the engine
off. Remove the battery vent
caps (conventional battery)
and examine each of the cells
separately. The fluid should
be filled just above the tops of
the plates, but not to the
brim. If the electrolyte
(liquid) in a cell is low, fill to
the "ring" of its filler .well, but
no further, with distilled
water or clean tap water.
Be careful not to splash the
electrolyte containing acid on
to your skin or clothing.
Should this happen, immediately
wash off the liquid with
a solution of 2 ounces of
baking soda to one litre of
water.
Always wash your hands
thoroughly after working
around a car battery before
touching anything. Should the
electrolyte get in your eyes,
DO NOT rub the eyes. Flush
the eyes immediately with
generous amounts of water,
then a one-percent solution of
baking soda and water, and
call your doctor.
Overfilling a battery can
cause the electrolyte to bubble
over. Since the fluid is
very corrosive, it will cause
white acid deposits around
the terminals. Remember that
the electrolyte can corrode
metal parts and also affect
your car's finish—so be extra
careful when working with
the battery.
Many new batteries have side
posts designed for less maintenance.
These types should
still be inspected regularly.
Whether you have this type
or the more conventional
variety, if corrosion is built
up on the battery case, tray,
or hold-down clamps, clean
them thoroughly.
This can be .done with a
mixture of four tablespoons of
baking soda in a litre of water.
Use this solution to clean the
battery case, tray, and holddown
clamps.
Be sure to avoid any
possibility of getting any of
this washing solution in the
cells by sealing off the holes in
the battery caps. Replace any
missing or damaged caps.
Clean off normal dirt and
grease with detergent.
Afterwards, rinse the battery
with water and dry with a
clean cloth or paper towels. If
necessary, paint tray and
clamps with acid-resistant
paint (do not paint the terminals).
It is also a good idea to
make sure you are getting the
maximum charge by cleaning
and inspecting the cables.
Remove the ground cable
(negative) first, then the
positive one (use a battery
cable puller, don't pry or hit),
and clean each post and
terminal with a battery brush.
Then reconnect first the positive
cable, then the negative
one, making sure they are .
tight.
If the cables have worn
insulation, broken wire
strands, or loose or damaged
connectors, replace them. After
tightening, cover the posts
and terminals with petroleum
jelly, or a special conductive
grease. Be sure the battery
hold-down clamps are snug.
Check battery fluid level at
least monthly and keep the
battery free from acid corrosion
build up. Make sure cable
connections and hold-down
clamps are clean and tight,
and your battery should give
you the best of service.
One last reminder: When
you park, be sure your car
lights are turned off!
SYMBOL OF UNITY is represented by the flag held by Charmaine MacLeod [left], district
board secretary and Katherine Yorston, secretary of the Kersley Women's Institute and
convenor of the international affairs committee. The flag they hold represents their national
organization, the Associated Countrywomen of the World. This marks the 83rd anniversary of
the founding of W.I.
Tragedy spurs formation
A personal tragedy resulted
in Adelaide Hoodless forming
the first Women's Institute
in Stoney Creek Ontario
in 1897 to provide women
with "a better knowledge of
home economics and child
care.
Now, 83 years later, Women's
Institute in Quesnel and
throughout the world celebrated
that anniversary last
week.
In Quesnel the ladies conducted
Mall February 21 and 22.
Hoodless, who lost her
eldest son at the age of 18
months because he was fed
impure milk, vowed to raise
the quality of home life
through every means possible.
which was started through
the efforts of the Vancouver
Women's Institutes, with donations
The Vancouver Average
Basket Price increased by
2.37 percent over the fourweek
period ending February
9. The latest Vancouver Average
Basket Price now is
10.72 percent over one year
ago and 20.73 percent ;
over
two years ago. '
The Fresh Vegetable Component
recorded an 11.5 percent
decrease over the four;
weeks. Items which showed
the largest price reductions
were tomatoes and celery.
Average potato prices were
also slightly lower due to
some stores advertising this
item • • '•
Currently the main supply
of tomatoes is from Mexico
and exceeds demand resulting
in very low prices for this
time of year. Higher priced,
but better quality tomatoes
are available from Florida and
are currently accounting for
25-30 percent of total volume
on the Vancouver wholesale
market. Other vegetables
contained in the Vancouver
Average Basket saw only
modest price fluctuation.
The Pork Component advanced
moderately by 7.2
percent during the four
weeks. Producer prices advanced
slightly by approximately
$2 a cwt. the week of
January 25 and another $1 a
cwt. the week ending February
9. Advertising of pork
items contained in the Vancouver
Average Basket was
less during the week of
February 9 and was mainly
the reason for the increase.
Beef prices over the four
weeks at the producer level
were relatively stable with a
very slight dip occurring the
week ending January 25 but
recovering immediately the
following week. The Beef
Component of the Vancouver
Average Basket Price was
down slightly by 1.42 percent
which was largely the result
of advertising of some roast
cuts.
Overall slaughter of steers,
heifers, calves and cows for
1980 is forecast to be down as
stocks are rebuilt. Steer cattle
numbers for slaughter will
remain low following smaller
calf crops of the last two
years. As a result, prices will
generally stay at levels
experienced over the past
year but short term (one to
six weeks) increases or decreases
in slaughter could
result in intermittent price
dips and peaks respectively.
The Fresh Fruit Component
of the Vancouver Average
Basket Price rose 11.9 percent
over the four weeks. This was
largely the result of price
advances for bananas and to a
lesser extent oranges. The
increases that these items
contributed to the Fruit Component
was moderated by the
advertising and price reduction
of grapefruit.
The Egg Component advanced
12 percent as a result
of returning regular prices
following heavy advertising
four weeks ago. Also, producer
prices advanced three
cents a dozen on large, one
cent a dozen on medium and
three cents a dozen on small
fcSSO
effective January 4 which was
reflected at retail stores oyer
the past three weeks.
The Processed Fruit Component
of the Vancouver
Average Basket Price in-.
creased 4.25 percent as a
result of manufacturers prices
advancing on canned fruit
cocktail and some sizes of
apple juice..
The Processed Vegetable
Component of the Vancouver
Average Basket Price recorded
an increase of 4.23 percent
due to price increases on
canned pork and beans.
The Poultry Component has
seen wide fluctuation over the
past four weeks with frozen
frying chicken prices ranging
from a low of 68-69 cents a ib.
, for supplies obtained from
prairie provinces to $1.29 -
$1.39 a Ib. for regular product.
While B.C. inventories are
not excessive there have been
some build-up nationally
which was sold at very low
COSt.
• '
The Other Foods Component
advanced 257 percent,
. which was largely the result
of continuing rapid price
increases for granulated sugar.
