Field Marshal Walther von Brauchitsch’s Imperial German Presentation Sword – Part of the Collection During World War I - Walther von Brauchitsch won the acclaim of the Germany Army and was presented this magnificent gold gilt lion’s head sword in 1918. This triple-engraved presentation sword has the pommel made in the form of a lion’s head. The spear-point blade is ornately engraved with his name among elaborate floral work. There is still much gilt evidenced here and the sword is in overall excellent condition. US Army Private First Class Francis J. Sullivan took this sword as a war trophy and it is listed as ‘a German Army Sword, Lion Head with tassel, engraved W.V.B.’ it is claimed along with the dagger described earlier and the Mauser pistol as well. Field Marshal Walther von Brauchitsch’s Mauser Pistol and Two Holsters Walther von Brauchitsch in the Ukraine during the German invasion of Russia. He would soon be fired by Hitler for the German Army’s failure to capture Moscow. He is shown examining a map with his Mauser field holster on his right side. Walther von Brauchitsch led Germany’s invasion of Russia, a failed attempt which led to his discharge by Adolph Hitler who then appointed himself head of the German army. He had served as a general staff officer in World War I and finished the war with the rank of major. This Mauser Model 1914, serial number 246826, was manufactured circa World War I and was carried by von Brauchitsch; ultimately captured from him by an American soldier who arrested him at the end of World War II in 1945. The 7.65mm (.32 ACP) caliber pistol in excellent condition. The soldier who captured the weapon, Private Francis J. Sullivan, later stamped his name on the right side and highlighted the Mauser ‘Waffenfabrik’ and other stampings on the pistol. The weapon is in overall excellent condition with the walnut grips and 90% bluing. (FFL C& R license required) Field Marshal Walther von Brauchitsch was among Adolf Hitler’s top generals before the war but became severely disaffected and disagreed with Hitler’s invasion plans for Europe. He even plotted to overthrow Hitler with fellow generals, a scheme which never materialized. He went on to plan the successful invasion of France which earned him the coveted Field Marshal’s baton. But he fell out of favor when Hitler’s invasion of Russia fell short of his goal to capture Moscow. This collection/archive is offered intact just as it was captured in 1945 including his General’s D\ diamond studded silver dagger, his pistol and two holsters, as well as his Imperial Army Lion Head presentation gold gilt sword, and copies of the capture documents.
