Introduction
The Department of Zoology, GC University
Lahore is the oldest seat of learning and imparting
knowledge of Zoology at the graduate and
postgraduate level in Pakistan. The Postgraduate
Programme at the Department was launched in
1908. In addition, it was the first centre to start
teaching Zoology in this part of the Subcontinent
until 1920 when the University of the Punjab
established its Department of Zoology. The
Zoology Department of the University of the
Punjab was also housed in the building of the
Department of Zoology at the then Government
College Lahore and continued functioning here till
1963. During these years, the Faculty Members of
Government College Lahore and the University
of the Punjab jointly managed the Postgraduate
Programme of Zoology.
In 1963, the Department of Zoology initiated its
independent Master’s Programme in Zoology as a
result of the untiring efforts of Dr. Nazir Ahmad,
Prof. Naseer-ud-Din Ahmad and Dr. Ahsan ul
Islam.
After attaining the status of Degree Awarding
Institution in 1997 and that of a University in 2002,
curricula were upgraded in accordance with HEC
requirements and international standards.
Academic Programmes
Academic Links
A foreign link has been developed between the
Fish Immunology Laboratory of the Department
and the Fish Immunology Research Centre,
Department of Biological Sciences, University of
Aberdeen, UK, through the Higher Education
Commission (HEC), Pakistan and the British
Council. Under this Programme, faculty members
and PhD scholars will conduct research jointly in
the field of Fish Immunology.
A national link has also been established between
Medical Entomology and Disease Vector Control
Laboratory of Zoology Department and Health
Services Academy (HSA) of the Ministry of
Health, Islamabad with the support of World
Health Organization (WHO). Under this link
exchange of faculty members and senior students
(Mphil, PhD) will take place. This interinstitutional
collaboration will be valuable to
exchange technical knowledge and skills with
respect to Medical Entomology and Disease
Vector Control already scarce in our country.
