As a Girl Scout Brownie leader you have a great opportunity to help Girl Scout Cadettes (grades
6, 7 and 8) earn the Leader in Action (LiA) Award and at the same time give your girls an
opportunity to interact with a wonderful young role model. The LiA award is a leadership
opportunity designed to help Cadettes discover their talents in mentoring and leading younger
children; gain the confidence, knowledge and expertise needed to guide younger girls; and
prepare them to hold future leadership positions within and outside of Girl Scouting. Cadettes
are encouraged to be key assistants to a Brownie troop as they complete a journey. What does
this mean for you?

Meet with the Cadette to plan and discuss how her required activities (in the letter in
your “How To Guide”) for the LiA award will be integrated into your troop meetings.
This includes deciding what materials she needs and who will purchase them,
transportation needs, information on the girls with whom she will be working, etc.
Prepare the troop for the Cadette’s participation and introduce her to the troop.
Maintain order and be there for the Cadette when she is conducting an activity.
Make sure every girl in the troop is being included in all activities.
Collect her signed parent/guardian permission slip for each meeting and/or field trip.
Provide feedback to the Cadette on her performance. Be careful in how you evaluate
her; the goal is to build her self-confidence.
Working with Cadettes
Cadettes are just beginning their leadership journey and will need some coaching to be
successful.
During your planning meetings, share with the Cadette what your girls enjoy, what you
find challenging with the Journey, and how the Cadette can help.
Review the LiA award activities for the chosen Brownie journey.
o Help the Cadette decide on an activity by asking guiding questions, helping them
analyze issues, etc.
o Guide them in organizing things, offer logistical guidance.
o Let them alter their plans if they are struggling to complete something.

Be a cheerleader by acknowledging their participation frequently
Remember that you need to continue to have at least two adults present, the LiA does
not count in the girl/adult ratio.
