Girl Scouts can be an avenue for a girl to embrace
her own culture and religion. Girls can earn awards
that relate to their religious faith, culture and history.
Girl Scout Troop 569 started at a Buddhist
Temple with just a few girls and one leader. The
temple now sponsors 25 troops with over 200
girls and even has their own Web site. For their
bridging ceremony, girls walk across a ceremonial
bridge located at the temple and are greeted on the
other side by a Girl Scout of the next grade level
where they are given their new sash.
Friday nights at the Salam Islamic Center in
Sacramento are busy because of Girl Scouts.
This year, 4 troops with 30 girl members started
meeting and incorporating the Girl Scout program
into their Islamic center’s youth evening program.
In August and September, during Ramadan, the
Muslim holiday of fasting and prayer, these Girl
Scouts participated in a sleep over and practiced
their religion by praying through the night and had
fun doing Girl Scout activities. On the last day of
Ramadan, the girls had a potluck and at sunset
broke their fast together.
“People ask me how Muslim Girl Scouts differ
from other Girl Scout troops and I always say,
they don’t, we just incorporate our religion into
the framework that Girl Scouts provides,” said Girl
Scout troop leader of Troop 972.
Our Hispanic/Latino Initiative has seen
a dramatic response to the tools, cultural
accommodations and individualized training
we developed.
After two years, the number of Spanishspeaking
leaders recruited through the
council’s Hispanic/Latino Initiative increased
from 4 to 27 and Latina Girl Scout troops
increased from 2 to 12. As a result, 177 new
girls are active Girl Scouts because of the
Hispanic/Latino Initiative.
HEART OF CENTRAL CALIFORNIA 2009 ANNUAL REPORT
BEHIND EVERY SUCCESSFUL GIRL SCOUT IS A COMMITTED VOLUNTEER
that teaches her to discover, connect and take action in ways that are
anything but average. Without women and men volunteering everyday,
great Girl Scout events do not happen. These volunteers share their time and
resources because they understand that these girls are our future.
This year, community leaders and Girl Scouts have connected
and collaborated to share the experience of giving and learning. Through this
partnership, girls get career building opportunities and realize that giving
back is important for a healthy community. At the same time, volunteers see
the value and impact of their commitment and understand how easy it is to
make a difference in a girl’s life.
2009 ANNUAL REPORT
OUTREACH
Girl Scouts is for every girl, but some girls
have limited resources and opportunities. These
are the girls we serve through troops led by
employed staff. Every girl deserves the self-esteem
building and relationship creating opportunities
of Girl Scouts. The Girl Scout outreach staff is
dedicated to fulfilling the Girl Scout mission and
bringing Girl Scouts to any girl who wants to be
in Girl Scouts.
Outreach volunteer Shapré grew up without
many resources and was uncertain about her
future, but Girl Scouts helped her realize her
potential. The Girl Scout outreach program offered
her activities and experiences, like the support of
a Girl Scout dance troop, the opportunity to meet
professional women and tour various colleges.
She now attends community college and hopes to
continue her studies at U.C. Berkeley in the fall.
She continues to give back to the Girl Scouts as
a dedicated volunteer and guest speaker for the
outreach program. Shapré hopes to give other
girls the same hope Girl Scouts gave her.
CAMP
Girls make life-long friends while they swim, hike, ride
horses, catch bugs and canoe. Camp Menzies has
more than 176 acres of sugar pines and star-filled nights;
it’s an open-air experience that takes girls out of their
element and teaches them to connect with nature and
respect the environment. At camp girls gain confidence to
try new things and these experiences help to shape a girl’s
leadership potential and build a sense of belonging.
GIRL SCOUT GOLD AWARD
Focus and dedication combine with creativity to earn the Girl Scout Gold Award.
In order to receive this award–the most prestigious award in Girl Scouts–a girl must
impact an important community issue of her choice.
Through her efforts of earning the Girl Scout Gold Award, a girl becomes more than
just your average teenager, she becomes a distinguished achiever. These girls are the
super stars of Girl Scouts.
I wear my Girl Scout Gold Award with pride because:
Passion: Community Service
Favorite Cookie: Thin Mint
Catherine was a Girl Scout as a child and
now her daughter is a Girl Scout.
As the new Board Chair I think we have carried the
momentum set by Patricia Cochran and continue to
work on building a unified, strong council. We have
continued to improve our governance system, and the
staff is constantly finding ways to improve day to day
operations. We have worked very hard at reducing
our costs, becoming more efficient and maintaining
morale in our organization - all huge accomplishments.
These efforts add up to the best possible Girl Scout
experience.
Our volunteer group is like no other; we have
passionate and hard working volunteers who believe
in our mission. I am excited to see the continued impact
Girl Scouts has in the community.
Name: Pam Saltenberger
Education: University of Oregon
When Pam Saltenberger started as CEO there were
only 30 employees and two computers. She learned
quickly that in the non-profit world you have to wear
many different hats and work hand in hand with the
girls, community leaders, volunteers, board members
and trainers to ensure the success of the girl members
and the organization. After her 14 years of dedication
to Girl Scouts Heart of Central California, there are
now 3,693 troop leaders and 117 full and part time
staff members supporting 28,018 girl members as they
work toward becoming tomorrow’s leaders, serving the
community and discovering the fun and friendship the
Girl Scout organization has to offer.
BOARD OF DIRECTORS
Girl Scouts Heart of Central California’s Board of Directors is comprised of volunteers who combine
their efforts to build girls of courage, confidence and character with superior judgment and
exceptional leadership skills. The board members serve as leaders in the council’s relationships
