2013 OUTLOOK
Jackson, a junior All-CAA selection a season ago, batted .344 with four
home runs and 51 RBIs. The two-year starter will bat in the middle of the
lineup once again and the coaching staff expects another big season from
the preseason honorable mention All-CAA pick.
Nyman was extremely consistent in 2012, batting .297 with 47 runs, 10
doubles and 25 stolen bases out of the nine-hole. With his speed and
Hofstra’s run-producers, he basically served as a second leadoff hitter
and should be counted on to do the same in 2013. Nyman could also see
action in the infield as he saw action at both third and second bases last
season
Stuart, the fastest player on the team, possesses a great deal of range
in the outfield and has improved at the plate in each of his seasons. He
batted .277 in 2012 with two home runs, 17 RBIs, 27 runs scored and
nine stolen bases.
Junior Bryan Verbitsky, who pitches out of the Pride bullpen, could also
see some action in the outfield. In 87 at-bats in 2012, Verbitsky batted
.322 with four home runs and 23 RBIs. Verbitsky could also see action as
a designated hitter.
Newcomers Brent Hall and TJ Ehrsam, as well as Cafiero could also
be in the mix for playing time in the outfield. The coaching staff looks
at Hall, a 6-4, 220 pound transfer from College of the Sequoias, as a
run-producer. The Visalia, California, product was an All-Central Valley
Conference pick in 2012 after batting .297 with 11 doubles, 19 RBIs
and 10 stolen bases. Ehrsam joins he Pride after two years at Louisburg
College in North Carolina where he batted .420 with 14 RBIs in 47
games as a sophomore.
Catcher
Perez, who missed all of 2012 with a shoulder injury, returns to his
starting job at third base and will bat in the middle of the order. As a
junior in 2011 Perez batted .277 with 11 doubles, a team-high nine home
runs and 24 RBIs.
Freshman David Leiderman, who won the 2012 Diamond Award as the
top position player in Nassau County, will serve in a reserve role at one
of the middle infield positions. Leiderman was named to the All-New
York State, All-Long Island and All-Nassau County teams as a senior
after batting .609 at Bellmore JFK High School.
Junior Matt Reistetter, a two-year starter and All-CAA selection, returns
to his customary spot behind the plate where he started 41 games a
season ago. Reistetter handled the Pride pitching staff brilliantly and is
one of the top defensive catchers in the league. He has also made great
strides at the plate after batting .283 with seven doubles and 19 RBIs.
Reistetter was also named to the preseason All-CAA honorable mention
squad.
Junior Robbie Cafiero will play the role of utility player for the Pride
and could see action as a backup at first and second, as well as being
the Pride’s designated hitter. Cafiero, a transfer from Catawba Valley
Community College, could also see time in the outfield, behind the plate
of at designated hitter. The Bethpage, New York, native began his career
at New York Tech where he was an all-conference selection before
earning All-Region X accolades as a catcher at CVCC after batting .385
with 20 doubles and 48 RBIs.
Ou tfield
The Hofstra outfield returns starters Kenny Jackson in left and Austin
Nyman, who manned centerfield last season, but will slide over to right
in 2013. Senior Taylor Stuart, who started 26 games as a junior, will get
the nod in center.
