2010 HOFSTRA MEN’S SOCCER GAME NOTES (4-6-4, 2-3-2 CAA)
Oct. 23 vs. Old Dominion
Streaks, Stats, and Storylines:
• Head Coach Richard Nuttall is in his 22nd season at the
Pride helm after taking over the program in 1989. He is
only four wins shy of 200 in his career (196-179-45).
• The Pride earned the Co-Championship of the Brown
Soccer Classic on Sept. 10-12 after defeating Yale 1-0 and
tying Brown 0-0. Freshman Shaun Foster was named the
Defensive MVP of the Tournament, while Erik Rengifo
and Chris Griebsch were named to the All-Tournament
team.
• Hofstra is in the middle of a three-game homestand after
tying Delaware 0-0 on Saturday and defeating Drexel 1-0
in overtime on Wednesday.
• Junior goalkeeper Greg Cumpstone is alone in second
place in Hofstra history with 15 shutouts after blanking
Georgia State earlier this season. His career record in CAA
games stands at an impressive 12-6-5, including 1-1-1 this
year.
• Hofstra is 12-5-2 in its last 19 games against nationally
ranked teams, dating back to 2004, after tying No. 21 UNC
Wilmington 0-0 in the regular season finale a year ago. All
five losses in that span have come to teams ranked in the
top seven.
• The Pride has five players on the roster who have played
for their national teams, or have recently been called up to
national team duty. Brett Carrington has earned
international caps with Barbados and Steven Ehrichs has
done likewise with Puerto Rico. Stephan Barea and A.J.
Laza have been called up to the Puerto Rico national team
recently as well, while Idris Mashriqi earned a spot on the
national team in Afghanistan and will play this winter.
• Hofstra has one of its youngest teams in school history
this season with 13 freshmen, five of whom started against
Drexel on Wednesday (Shaun Foster, Chris Griebsch,
Roberto Pellegrini, Jon Watkin, Lukas Ahman). Five
sophomores are also regular starters or consistent players.
• The Pride has 12 Long Island players on the roster this
season, but also has a mix of foreign flavor, with two
Germans (Chris Griebsch, Florian Popp), two Swedes
(Johannes Grahn, Lukas Ahman), and two Englishmen (Jon
Watkin, Shaun Foster). The Pride also has one Italian
(Roberto Pellegrini), one Barbadian (Brett Carrington), and
one New Zealander (Gareth James).
*CAA Game
HOME GAMES IN CAPS

Last Game: Freshman midfielder Lukas Ahman
(Soderberg, Sweden) scored on a header with 30 seconds
left in the first overtime as Hofstra defeated Drexel 1-0 in
overtime on Wednesday evening. The game-winning goal
was set up after a corner kick, with freshman center back
Shaun Foster (Southport, England) still on the offensive
end of the field. Foster took a pass outside the penalty area
on the left side of the field and beat one defender towards
the end line. He sent a looping cross to the far post, and
Ahman was able to crash down the middle and get a head
on the ball inside the top of the six-yard box that bounced
straight off the ground and over the top of Drexel
goalkeeper Pentti Pussinen. Freshman Roberto Pellegrini
(Monte Porzio Catone, Italy) had two saves for Hofstra to
pick up his second straight shutout, as the Pride had a
commanding 28-8 edge in shots.
Nuttall In 22nd Season, Closing In On 200 Wins: The
2010 campaign marks the 22nd season for Head Coach
Richard Nuttall, who began his Hofstra career in 1989. He
took over a program that had only 11 wins in the three
seasons prior to his arrival, and built it up to the level
where it won three straight CAA championships from
2004-06. His career record coming into this weekend is
now 196-179-45, leaving him four wins shy of 200.
That’s Using Your Head: Hofstra has had an unusual year
with a lot of offensive struggles (seven goals in 14 games)
despite consistently creating scoring chances. The Pride has
perhaps found an answer by using their head, literally.
Hofstra’s last three goals, including game-winners by
Lukas Ahman (Soderberg, Sweden) on Wednesday and
Shaun Foster (Southport, England) on Oct. 2 against
Georgia State have come on headers. Ahman also had a
header goal in a 1-1 tie with VCU on Oct. 9.
Second Game’s The Charm: Freshman goalkeeper
Roberot Pellegrini (Monte Porzio Catone, Italy) made his
Hofstra debut against Northeastern last week and had a bit
of a tough evening, falling 4-0. He got another chance
against Delaware on Saturday and came through with a big
10-save performance in a 0-0 tie with the Blue Hens. He
picked up his second straight shutout on Wednesday
against Drexel, tallying two saves, including a tough one in
the first half that he tipped wide of the post.
Foster Earns Dual Honors: Freshman defender Shaun
Foster (Southport, England) earned a pair of individual
honors after helping the Pride to a pair of shutouts at the
Brown Soccer Classic on Sept. 10-12. Foster was named
the Defensive MVP of the tournament and was also named
the Colonial Athletic Association Rookie of the Week. He
also earned a preseason honor when he was named the
Pride’s Most Valuable Player in a 0-0 exhibition tie with
St. John’s at the Town of Oyster Bay Supervisor’s
Challenge.
Griebsch On Top Of Stat Lists: Freshman midfielder
Chris Griebsch (Dessau-Rosslau, Germany) missed most of
preseason camp with an injury and is just now getting his
conditioning back to normal. He’s provided a boost to a
Hofstra offense that has needed one, as he currently leads
the Pride in goals (2), assists (2) and points (6). He has had
an assist in a 1-1 tie at Oct. 9 at VCU, the game-winning
assist in a 1-0 win over Georgia State on Oct. 2, and the
game-winning goal against Yale on Sept. 10.
Young and Younger: Hofstra has regularly started five
freshmen this season, and started its youngest line-up of the
year in an Oct. 12 game against Northeastern with five
freshmen and four sophomores. Eight freshmen (Lukas
Ahman, Tyler Botte, Shaun Foster, Chris Griebsch, Chris
Grenzig, Roberto Pellegrini, Florian Popp, Jon Watkin) are
regular members of the Pride’s rotation when healthy,
while Hofstra also utilizes five sophomores (Mike
Annarumma, Stephan Barea, Thomas Bekas, A.J. Laza,
Idris Mashriqi) as well, giving the team a solid nucleus for
the future.
Mr. Versatility: Sophomore Stephan Barea (Levittown,
NY) scored a team-high six goals last year, including his
first goal just over one minute into his Hofstra career (1:02
to be exact) when he headed in a cross in Hofstra’s 1-0 win
over Stony Brook on Sept. 1, 2009. This year, Barea has
been asked to fill in all over the field. He has played at
outside back, outside midfield, outside forward and center
forward this season.
Cumpstone Second On Shutout List: Junior goalkeeper
Greg Cumpstone (Killingworth, Conn.) picked up a shutout
in a 1-0 win over Georgia State on Oct. 2, giving him 15 in
his career, alone in second in Hofstra history. Matthias
Gumbrecht (2002-05) holds the school record with 23.
Cumpstone has a career record of 16-15-8 in the Hofstra
net, but has really stepped up in conference games. His
career mark in CAA contests is an impressive 12-6-5,
including six shutouts last year and one this season. For the
year, Cumpstone’s goals against average is just 0.88, and
he had a shutout streak of 350 minutes.
A Well-Capped Roster: The Pride has five players on the
roster who have played for their national teams (or have
recently been called up). Brett Carrington (St. George,
Barbados) has earned international caps with Barbados, and
Steven Ehrichs (Brentwood, NY) has done likewise with
Puerto Rico, including two World Cup qualifiers in 2008.
Sophomores Stephan Barea (Levittown, NY) and A.J. Laza
(Coram, N.Y.) have also both been called up for national
team duty for Puerto Rico and have also played for its
Under 21 team. Idris Mashriqi (Fresh Meadows, NY),
meanwhile, was recently called up to the Afghanistan
national team and will make his debut this winter.
Home, Sweet Home: With its win over Drexel on
Wednesday, the Pride is now 27-11-11 in its last 49 home
games, including 2-2-1 last year. All-time at Hofstra Soccer
Stadium, which opened in 2003, the Pride has compiled a
33-19-9 record.
Hofstra vs. Ranked Teams: The Pride is 12-5-2 in its last
19 games against ranked opponents, dating back to 2004.
All five losses during this span have been to top seven
teams (#7 Maryland, #3 Old Dominion, #3 Wake Forest, #4
Connecticut, #2 SMU), including two (Maryland in 2004,
Wake Forest in 2006) in the NCAA Tournament. Against
teams ranked between 10-25, Hofstra is 11-0-2 since 2004.
CAA Update: The CAA standings are one big cluster, as
Hofstra stands at 2-3-2 in league play, in ninth place, but
only one game out of third, which is held by Old Dominion
(3-2-2). William & Mary has created separation for first at
5-1-1, but the other 11 teams are separated by only two
games.
