Welcome to the 2011-2012 season
Dear Athletes, Parents, Carers and Supporters
The Committee welcomes you to the 2011-12 season of Little Athletics. At Ginninderra, our motto is
Family, Fun and Fitness. We try to live up to this motto and make our Saturday morning
competitions an enjoyable time for both the children competing and their parents and carers.
However, it requires assistance from all parents as officials, and in other capacities, to ensure that
the program can run smoothly. With your help, it is hoped that this season will be an enjoyable and
healthy time for both the athletes and parents.
2011-12 is Ginninderra Little Athletics 35th season. As well as looking forward to our usual season of
fun and competition, we would also like to hold an event to mark this special occasion. More
information will be forthcoming at a later date.
We welcome our sponsors again in 2011. The Magpies Sports Club is our major sponsor and we have
several very valuable support sponsors in ACT Tyrepower, Bovis Lend Lease, Monaro Windows,
Kippax Fair, WR Engineering, Bing Lee and Bellevue Builders. We welcome our new sponsor The
Home Loan Centre incorporating Conveyancing Canberra and Active Property. We have also been
able to retain and build on our raffle sponsors; they are listed in our booklet.
Have a fantastic season everyone.
Club history
In 1976 ‘Ginninderra Centre of the Little Athletics Association of New South Wales’ was formed and
based at Charnwood Oval. The Centre was to cater for children in Melba, Spence, Evatt, Charnwood,
Macgregor, Flynn and the fledgling suburb of Fraser. The first official committee meeting was held
on 11 Aug 1976 with Mr Ross Stiles as Chairman. First Registration day was 25 Sept 1976 and
competition started on 2 Oct 1976 catering for U6 to U12 age groups. In the first season there were
266 athletes.
The Club has seen its athletes go on to represent Australia at various levels as they have continued
their athletics careers in senior athletics, but they never forget where they first discovered the joy of
athletics!
It is hoped this success will continue long into the future.
Life memberships
Life memberships are awarded to people who demonstrate outstanding service to the Club over an
extended period of time. The following individuals have been awarded life membership. Each
General information
Introduction
Ginninderra Little Athletics Club (GLAC) is your centre’s name. GLAC is affiliated with the ACT Little
Athletics Association as one of seventeen affiliated ACT and South Eastern NSW Centres.
Little Athletics in the ACT is available to children aged between 5 and 16 years of age. Age group is
dependent on the age of the athlete at midnight on 30 September at the start of the season, ie an
athlete turning 6 during September competes in the U7 group age whereas an athlete turning 6 after
October 1st competes in the U6 age group. Children can register providing they turn 5 prior to 31
March in the current season. Proof of age (eg birth certificate) is required for all new athletes. (i.e.
those not previously registered with an ACTLAA affiliated centre.)
Registration fees 2011-12
Cost per athlete for the 2011-12 season is as follows: 1 child $105, 2 children $200, 3 children $290, 4
children $375. $60 of this fee is paid to the ACTLAA for registration and covers championship and
special event costs, insurance and ACTLAA administration. All athletes competing in Club or ACTLAA
events must be registered with ACTLAA.
Uniforms
The centre uniform consists of a yellow and black T-shirt
with black shorts, or a black and yellow body suit. GLAC
uniforms should be worn at all club events and MUST be
worn at ALL ACTLAA carnivals and championships. On
registration with GLAC, age patches and registration
numbers will be supplied and must be sewn on to the front
of the t-shirt or body suit.
Footwear
Shoes must be worn in all GLAC and ACTLAA running events and, for safety, should be worn at all
times whilst at Charnwood Oval. Spiked shoes may be worn by athletes in the Under 9 and above age
groups in events run entirely in lanes plus High Jump, Long Jump, Triple Jump and Javelin. No spikes
are allowed in the 800m and 1500m. Spiked shoes may carry a maximum needle length of 7mm for
synthetic track events and 9mm for grass surfaces. For track events, the spikes can only be put on
immediately prior to the start of the event and must be removed on completion of the event and
while the athletes are still in their lanes. A spike is any sharp protrusion from the shoe whether metal
or plastic, screw-in or permanent. Spiked shoes include any shoe capable of taking spikes whether
these spikes are fitted or removed. This includes the replacement of the spikes with blanks.
- - 10

Sun and weather protection
Due to their open nature, all sportsgrounds including Charnwood Oval can have extremely variable
weather conditions. Please ensure that your children have adequate clothing for the cold as well as
sun protection. This is particularly important for athletes choosing to wear bodysuits. Bodysuits must
only be worn uncovered whilst actually competing.
Additionally, parents should always make sure that their child has a full water bottle, hat and
sunscreen.
Saturday morning start times
Warm-ups commence at 8.45am, ready for a 9am sharp start each Saturday morning. It is expected
that most age groups will complete their 5 programmed events between 11am and 12 pm. This will
depend upon age group size; events participated in and level of parental assistance. It is essential
athletes arrive on time to ensure adequate warm up time to prevent injury and also to get through
the program before it becomes too hot.
Joint meetings
Two joint meets are planned with Belconnen West Little Athletics Club. Dates and venues are in the
season calendar. It is hoped that these meets will be supported as it will provide athletes with
additional competition during the quieter holiday period.
Competing in ACTLAA events
All registered athletes are eligible to compete in ACTLAA events. Dates for the various events are
listed in the season calendar. Entry in these events is encouraged, but is optional.
To be eligible to represent GLAC at the Northside Regional Championships and subsequently at
ACTLAA Championships, athletes must be U9 or above and are required to participate in at least six
(6) GLAC meets, except in the case of illness, injury or other circumstances as agreed by the
Committee.
Wet weather
Except in cases of extremely bad weather, a modified program is usually run on wet days for those
who attend. To confirm if competition is on, please call 62599085 after 8.30am on the Saturdays.
When a Saturday meet is cancelled, the meet will be conducted instead of training on the following
Tuesday evening 5.30pm if weather permits. Please refer to the website for confirmation.
Newsletter
A newsletter is produced to keep parents and athletes up to date with important information. Please
check the website for updated information also. A notice board near the GLAC shed will be used to
provide information regarding upcoming events. Please check the board to keep fully informed about
activities and so you don’t miss out on entering your child in events run by ACTLAA.
Canteen
The canteen sells cool drinks, tea and coffee, sweets and ice blocks, along with a sausage sizzle, all at
competitive prices. The canteen operates at all scheduled meets. Profits from the canteen go
towards providing financial assistance to athletes and towards upgrading or replacing old equipment
as the need arise.
- - 11

Lost property
Any lost property will be stored in the shed. Unclaimed items will be donated to charity.
Sick children
If your child is sick please do not send them along to competition. Also, your child should not
compete with an injury (even if supported or taped) or if they have suffered a recent asthma attack.
First aid
A competent first aid officer is on duty at each meet. If injury occurs, please ask for help immediately
and fill out an injury form, available at the canteen. Ice packs are available at the canteen for the
treatment of injuries.
Competition tickets
Each child receives a ticket for each event they compete in. These tickets display times or distances
and should be glued into their event ticket book. They are primarily for recognition of improvement
by the child from week to week. Merit badges are awarded for the completion of 50, 100, 200 and
300 events. On reaching this number of events and to obtain a badge, your child must hand in their
ticket book with the tickets stuck in to the Registrar. The Registrar will collect the book and then
return it with the badge the following week. As the ticket count is cumulative, make sure that the
previous season books are also presented. All tickets received whilst competing in LAs competitions
(not just at GLAC) should be presented. For athletes with 400, 500, 600 or 700 tickets,
medals/trophies are awarded on presentation day.
Training
Training is held at Charnwood Oval on Tuesdays from 5:30pm to 6:30pm throughout the season,
except over the Christmas break. Please note: this in not compulsory. Athletes who do participate in
training show increased competence in events through the season.
All age groups are welcome at these sessions and every effort will be made to cater for individual skill
and fitness levels. The focus will be on event specific training while keeping the sessions fun. The
training schedules will be released at regular intervals during the season.
Parent help at training is greatly appreciated. The coaches are happy to show you how you can help
with basic coaching techniques. For more information on coaching, or on coaching courses, please
contact our Head Coach.
Parental support requirements
As a guide it is expected that parents will complete a duty at least once every three weeks. For those who
are interested, there will be an opportunity to complete a basic official’s course. We have compulsory
parental or guardian participation on the duty roster at all regional and state championship events when
your children are competing.
For the centre to operate at all, strong parental participation is essential as follows:
Age marshals
Escort children between events, where necessary act as event official for field events by measuring, recording
distances, fill event tickets for athletes for field and circular track events. Three age marshals are required for
younger groups and 2 age marshals required by older groups.
Place marshals
Ensure the accuracy of place getters in all events. The Chief Marshal compares the placing with the electronic
timing printout.
Circular Track Assistant
Timing on the circular track is done using the electronic timing system and backed up with hand-held multitiming
stopwatch. The assistant acts as place judge and hands out place numbers to athletes as they finish.
These numbers correspond to the running times and are used by the age marshal to cross reference the
athletes with the list of times for the event tickets.
Canteen
Assistance is required to ensure that the canteen is available on every scheduled program date. Volunteers
are welcome anytime.
BBQ
Assistance is required to cook sausages on the BBQ. The notice board will display the weekly roster.
Code of Conduct
Our motto is:
“FAMILY FUN & FITNESS”
Parental code of conduct
• Encourage children to participate in all events
• Focus on children’s efforts and performance rather than the overall outcome of the event
• Children participate for enjoyment (THEIRS!).
• Encourage children to participate according to the rules.
• Never ridicule or yell at a child for making a mistake or losing an event.
• Applaud good efforts by all athletes: children learn best from example.
• If you disagree with an official, raise the issue through the appropriate channels rather than
questioning the official’s judgement and honesty in public. Officials are volunteers.
• Avoid the use of derogatory or degrading language.
• Don't stand back and criticise, get in and help our children.
Athlete code of conduct
GLAC is there for your health, fitness and fun.
• Participate for your enjoyment, not just to please parents and/or coaches.
• To do your best is all anyone can ask of you
• Co-operate with your Marshal/Coach, because without them there would be no competition
• Treat all athletes as you would like to be treated. Remember you are part of a club.
• If you wouldn't do it at home, don't do it here.
Event rules and officiating instructions
Discus
Rules
1. Competitors must stand or sit at least 2 metres behind the throwing circle whilst waiting for their
turn.
2. The athlete may enter the throwing circle from any direction.
3. The athlete may start and finish their throw from anywhere within the circle but must not at any time
during the throw have any part of their body touch the area outside of the circle. ie If a toe, foot or
hand touches the grass outside the circle it is a foul.
4. The athlete must commence the throw from a stationary position inside the circle.
5. The discus must land inside the angled sector boundary lines. On the line is a foul.
6. Once the throw is complete, the athlete must leave through the back half of the circle.
Marshalling
CHIEF: Call up athlete. Allocate marker numbers. Determine foul throws. Mark out the event record.
ASSISTANT: Mark distance of throws.
Recording
Each age group has a recording sheet on which the athletes’ numbers, names and the relevant season
performance (as listed in this booklet) is marked. Each athlete throws in turn with the entire group having
three throws each. When the athlete has thrown, place a tick against their name. If a foul is thrown then place
an 'F' in the box. No other recording is necessary until measuring takes place.
Example
Joe A F 7.06m
At our club we do not allocate 1st, 2nd or 3rd placegetters, but encourage personal best performances. Each
athlete is given a ticket stating date, event and the result.
Measuring
WARNING: For safety, the assistant must stand outside the sector and facing the athlete until the throw has
been completed, before marking the throw.
1. First Round. As each athlete enters the throwing area their corresponding marker (marker no 1 = first
thrower) is taken by the assisting official and placed into the ground at the first point of contact of the
discus with the ground.
2. Second/third Round. A spare marker is placed where the discus first contacts the ground. If this throw
is better than the previous attempt, the thrower's marker can be moved to the improved position. If
the better throw is difficult to determine, a second marker is to be left in the ground and the number
of the marker recorded against the thrower.
- - 16

3. To measure throws, take the zero end of the tape to the base of the marker. Position the tape so that
it is tight and straight, crossing the centre point of the throwing circle. Take the measurement of the
throw from the inside rim of the circle. Round down to the nearest cm below the actual distance: ie if
the tape shows 17.975m, record as 17.97m.
If a record is thrown, call a committee member immediately for verification.
Shot put
Rules
1. Competitors should stand or sit at least 2 metres behind the throwing circle whilst waiting for their
turn.
2. The athlete may enter the throwing circle from any direction.
3. The athlete must position the shot in one hand so that it touches the neck. If during the throw the
hand drops below this position, or if the shot is taken behind the line of the shoulders, then it is a foul
throw.
4. A stop board is attached to the front of the cement circle. The athlete's foot may contact the inner
edge of this board but must not touch the top of the board. Touching the top is a foul.
5. The athlete may start and finish their throw from anywhere within the circle but must not at any time
during the throw have any part of their body touch the area outside of the circle, ie if a toe, foot or
hand touches the top of the stop board or the grass outside the circle it is a foul.
6. The shot must land inside the angled sector boundary lines. On the line is a foul.
7. Once the throw is complete, the athlete must leave through the back half of the circle.
Marshalling
CHIEF: Call up athlete. Allocate marker number. Determine foul throws. Mark out the event record.
ASSISTANT: Mark distance of throws.
- - 17

Recording
Each age group has a recording sheet on which the athletes’ numbers, names and the relevant record (as
indicated in this booklet) is marked. Each athlete throws in turn with the entire group having three throws
each. When the athlete has thrown, place a tick against their name. If a foul is thrown then place an 'F' in the
box. No other recording is necessary until measuring takes place.
Example
Joe A F 7.89m
At our club we do not allocate 1st, 2nd or 3rd placegetters, but encourage personal best performances. Each
athlete is given a ticket stating date, event and the result.
Measuring
WARNING: For safety, the assistant must stand outside the sector and facing the athlete until the throw has
been completed before marking the throw.
1. First Round. As each athlete enters the throwing area, their corresponding marker (marker no 1 = first
thrower) is taken by the assisting official and placed into the ground at the first point of contact of the
shot with the ground.
2. Second/third Round. A spare marker is placed where the shot first contacts the ground. If this throw is
better than the previous attempts, the thrower's marker can be moved to the improved position. If
the better throw is difficult to determine, a second marker is to be left in the ground and the number
of the marker recorded against the thrower.
3. To measure throws, take the zero end of the tape to the base of the marker. Position the tape so that
it is tight and straight, crossing the centre point of the circle. Take the measurement of the throw from
the inner edge of the stop board. Round down to the nearest whole centimetre, ie if the tape shows
7.975m, record as 7.97m.
If a record performance is thrown, call a committee member immediately for verification.
- - 18

Javelin
No age group is permitted to compete in the javelin without an age or event marshal present. It is
the marshal's responsibility to ensure the event is conducted in a safe manner and that people
keep clear of the javelin area during competition.
Rules
1. Competitors not currently throwing must stand or sit down in a sensible position away from the
throwing area and facing the thrower.
2. The athlete must hold the javelin at the grip and the javelin must be thrown over the shoulder or the
upper part of the throwing arm.
3. If the athlete touches the throwing lines or the ground outside the lines during the throw it is a foul.
4. The metal tip must strike the ground before any other part of the javelin. It is not required that the
javelin stick into the ground.
5. The javelin must land inside the angled sector boundary lines. On the line is a foul.
6. The competitor must not leave the run-up area before the javelin has hit the ground.
7. Once the throw is completed and the javelin has landed, the athlete must leave from behind the
throwing line
Marshalling
CHIEF: Call up athlete. Allocate flag nos. Determine foul throws. Mark out the event record.
ASSISTANT: Mark distance of throws.
Recording
Each age group has a recording sheet on which the athletes’ numbers, names and the relevant record is
marked. Each athlete throws in turn with the entire group having three throws each. When the athlete has
thrown, place a tick against their name. If a foul is thrown then place an 'F' in the box. No other recording is
necessary until measuring takes place.
the number of the marker recorded against the thrower.
3. To measure throws, take the zero end of the tape to the base of the marker. Position the tape so that
it is tight and straight, crossing through the centre mark. Take the measurement of the throw from
the run-up side of the throwing line. Round down to the nearest cm below the actual distance, eg if
25.255m is thrown it is recorded as 25.25m.
If a record is thrown, call a committee member immediately for verification.
Turbojav
Turbojav is an event for the U8-U10 age groups and is run in a similar manner to javelin.
Rules
1. Competitors must marshal a sensible distance from the athlete throwing.
2. The athlete must hold the turbojav at the grip. It must be thrown over the shoulder or the upper part
of the throwing arm.
3. If the athlete touches the throwing line during the throw, it is a foul.
4. It is not required that the turbojav stick into the ground or land point first,
5. The athlete must leave the throwing area from behind the throw line.
No other recording is
Example
Joe A F 17.82m
At our club we do not allocate 1st, 2nd or 3rd placegetters, but encourage personal best performances. Each
athlete is given a ticket stating date, event and the result.
Vortex
The vortex is an event for the U6 and U7 age groups. It will be a non-competitive event. Throws will not be
measured. Tickets will be awarded for participation.
Age marshals should encourage practice is some of the rules of javelin, including
1. Competitors not currently throwing must stand or sit down in a sensible position away from the
throwing area and facing the thrower.
2. The athlete must hold the vortex at the grip and the vortex must be thrown over the shoulder or the
upper part of the throwing arm.
3. If the athlete touches the throwing line during the throw it is a foul.
4. Once the throw is completed and the vortex has landed, the athlete must leave from behind the
throwing line.
Marshalling
CHIEF: Call athlete, determine foul throws
High Jump
Athletes in the U9 age group must use the scissor kick technique until at least the Christmas break. All other
athletes are to use the scissor kick technique until they satisfy a coach that they can complete alternative
jumping techniques correctly and safely.
Rules
1. The competitor must take off for the jump from one foot only.
2. A jump is a failure if the bar doesn't remain on the supports due to the action of the athlete.
3. A jump is a failure if the athlete touches the landing mat or ground beyond the plane of the uprights
without having first cleared the bar. It is allowable for the jumping foot to touch the front side of the
landing mat during the action of jumping as long as no advantage is gained.
Marshalling
CHIEF: Call up athlete. Determine foul jumps. Mark out the event record. Set the bar at required height.
ASSISTANT: Assist with the bar.
Recording
Each age group has a recording sheet on which the athletes’ numbers, names and the relevant record is
marked. Each athlete jumps in turn. When the athlete has jumped place a 'O','X' or '-' for cleared, failed or
passed. Continue, raising the bar as required, until all competitors have failed 3 consecutive jumps.
At our club we do not allocate 1st, 2nd or 3rd placegetters, but encourage personal best performances. Each
athlete is given a ticket stating date, event and the result.
1.07 1.12 1.17 1.22 1.24 1.26
Joe A O XO O XO XXX 1.22
Sam B - X- XO XXO XO XXX 1.24
Ben C - O X- XX 1.12
‘O’= CLEARED
‘X’= FAILED
‘-‘= DID NOT JUMP (PASSED)
Measuring
1. First Jump. There are no required start heights for any age group. Set the bar at a reasonable height
for the ability of the competitors. Each athlete is called in turn. If the athlete clears the bar or passes,
his/her turn at that particular height is complete. The round is continued at that height until all
competitors have cleared the height, passed, or recorded 3 failures.
2. If an athlete fails 3 times to clear a height, he/she has completed competition. His/her result is
recorded as the last height successfully cleared.
3. Subsequent heights. Each remaining athlete are called in turn as above.
4. Bar heights should be incremented by 5cm until 6 competitors are left. The height increments may
then be reduced to 2cm (minimum).
5. The height of the bar is measured at the centre which is approx. 2cm lower than at the uprights. The
same side of the bar needs to remain to the top through the round due to the variable curvature of
the bar. Also ensure a 1cm gap between the upright and the bar at each end.
If a record is jumped, do not move the height bar. Call a Committee member immediately for
verification.
- - 22

Long jump
Rules
1. The jump is a ruled a foul if any part of the competitor’s foot touches the ground beyond the front of
the take-off mat or board. Taking off before the mat/board is not a failure.
2. The jump is ruled foul if the competitor runs through without jumping.
3. The jump is ruled a foul if the competitor touches the landing area at a closer point to the take-off
area than the marks made in the sand during landing. This includes the case where a competitor walks
back through the sand to exit the pit
Marshalling
CHIEF: Call up athlete. Determine foul jumps. Mark out the event record.
ASSISTANT: Mark distance of jump. Rake the pit.
Recording
Each age group has a recording sheet on which the athletes’ numbers, names and the relevant record is
marked. Each athlete jumps in turn with the entire group having three jumps each. Measure and record each
athlete’s jump in turn. If a foul is jumped then place an 'F' on the recording sheet.
Example
Joe A 3.86m F 4.06m
At our Club we do not allocate 1st, 2nd or 3rd placegetters, but encourage personal best performances. Each
athlete is given a ticket stating date, event and the result.
Measuring
1. After each athlete jumps, their jump is measured.
2. To measure, place the zero of the tape on the landing mark in the sand that is closest to the take-off
area.
3. For jumps from the board, check tape is tight and straight, crossing perpendicular to the take-off
board. Measure to the edge of the board closest to the pit (ie front edge).
4. For jumps from the mat, measure directly to the mark made by the front of the take-off foot.
5. Round down to the nearest centimetre, eg if the tape shows 4.975m, record as 4.97m.
If a record is jumped, do not rake the pit. Call a Committee member immediately for verification.
Triple jump
Rules
1. The jump is ruled a foul if any part of the competitor’s foot touches the ground past the front of the
take-off mat/board when taking off. Taking off before the mat/board is not a foul.
2. The jump is ruled a foul if the competitor runs through without jumping.
3. The jump is ruled a foul if the competitor touches the landing area at a closer point to the take-off
area than the marks made in the sand during landing, including if the competitor walks back through
the sand.
4. The jump is ruled a foul if it fails to consist of a hop, then a step, then a jump, in that order.
- - 23

a. For the hop, the athlete must land first upon the same foot as that from which they have
taken off
b. For the step, the athlete must land on the foot opposite to that from which they have taken
off.
5. The jump must be made from the 5m, 7m or 9m board/mat nominated by the athlete to the chief
official ahead of the jump.
Marshalling
CHIEF: Call up athlete. Determine foul jumps. Mark out the event record.
ASSISTANT: Mark distance of jump. Rake the pit.
Recording
Each age group has a recording sheet on which the athletes’ numbers, names and the relevant best
performance is marked. Each athlete jumps in turn with the entire group having three jumps each. When the
athlete has jumped, place a measurement against their name. If a foul is jumped then place an 'F' in the box.
Example
Joe A 9.86m F 8.06m
At our Club we do not allocate 1st, 2nd or 3rd placegetters, but encourage personal best performances. Each
athlete is given a ticket stating date, event and the result.
Measuring
1. After each athlete jumps their jump is measured.
2. To measure, place the zero of the tape on the landing mark in the sand that is closest to take-off area.
3. For jumps from the board, check tape is tight and straight crossing perpendicular to the take-off
board. Measure to the edge of the board closest to the pit (ie front edge).
4. For jumps from the mat, measure directly to the mark made by the front of the take-off foot.
5. Round down to the nearest centimetre, eg if the tape shows 7.975m record as 7.97m.
If a record performance is jumped, do not rake the pit. Call a Committee member immediately for
verification.
Other rules and information

Proper conduct at GLAC events
The starter or age marshal in consultation with a Committee member, reserve the right to refuse an
athlete’s participation in an event under the following circumstances:
the athlete has declared an injury or illness that would be exacerbated by participation in the event
the athlete has demonstrated a clear lack of intention to participate in the spirit of the event.
Time keeping
In the 2010-2011 season GLAC introduced timing gates for all straight track events including hurdles.
The times of each competitor will be recorded separately in each lane. The judging staff (3) plus a
chief judge will place the athletes in lane order and ensure that they move in an orderly manner to
the recording tent. The recording staff with the assistance of the age marshals will issue the
competition ticket to the athlete.
If a record is run, the time on the computer printout, the lane number and the athlete must be
verified by a Committee member for the record to be accepted.
In the event of the timing gates being out of order:
The straight track requires 8 timekeepers and a chief timekeeper. Always stand beside the finish line
with a clear line of sight to the starter. Start the watch when the smoke is seen. Do not wait for the
bang. Each timekeeper will be allocated a place getter to time. If you are given 4th place, estimate
who is coming 4th on the track, then while looking over the finish line count the children across and
hit the stop button on the 4th one. Check with the time keepers for positions before and after yours
to ensure that results are consistent with the placing. The chief time keeper will help sort out any
problems and should also provide a 2nd time for 1st place in case of Centre records.
A Committee member must verify the time on the ticket for a record to be accepted.
At our Club we do not allocate 1st, 2nd or 3rd placegetters, but encourage personal best
performances. Each athlete is given a ticket stating date, event, registration number and the result.
Starting blocks
Starting blocks are supplied by the Club for the use of U12 athletes and upwards.
Long distance events
Pack starts are used with these events. Competitors may cross to the inside lanes as soon as
practicable but must not cause interference to other competitors. For the U6 and U7 age groups, the
300m and 400m are classed as long distance events.
Records
Club records for each event are listed in the back of this section of the booklet. It is essential that
athletes and officials are aware of these performances so that all new records can be properly
verified by a Committee member.
Records need to be verified by a Committee member immediately after the record has been set, by
confirmation of the time, distance or height prior to the evidence being removed or cancelled.
Do not cancel the stop watch, rake the pit, remove marker etc., until the record has been
confirmed.
ACTLAA organised events
All GLAC athletes aged from U7 to U17 are eligible to compete in the inter-club competitions
organised by ACTLAA. Attendance, whilst not compulsory is highly encouraged. The greater the
involvement of GLAC athletes, the more enjoyable these events are. Please note that as the AIS
Athletics Track and Field facility at Bruce is an all-weather facility, events are not cancelled due to bad
weather. The GLAC competition manager acts solely as a team co-ordinator for these ACTLAA events
and parents must individually decide on whether their child competes or not. Parents always have
the right to withdraw their children from the competition if conditions are unpleasant. Dates and
venues for the ACTLAA events listed below are detailed in the season calendar.
ACT multi-event carnival
The multi-event competition is open to all athletes from U8 to U17 age groups. The athletes perform
in a number of events including running, throwing and jumping. They are awarded points for their
performance in each event and at the end of the day these points are totalled to give an overall
score. Younger age groups may participate in 4 events whilst older athletes participate in 5 events.
Ribbons are awarded to the winner of each individual event and a medal to the overall point winner.
Relay Carnival
The relay carnival is for athletes to compete as a team for their Club. Track relays involve teams of 4
whilst the throw and jump relays can involve 2 to 8 per team. The object is TEAM PARTICIPATION. It
doesn't matter whether the athletes win or lose, the fact that they represent their club scores the
TEAM points. Due to the team nature of this event, if your child makes a commitment to a relay
team, it is requested that they follow through with training and attend on the day so as not to let
their team members down.
ALAC U15 multi-event trials
Trials are held for U15 athletes who nominate for the ALAC U15 Multi-event Championships in April.
Regional championships
The Northside Regional Championships is a qualifying meet for eligibility to compete at the ACT
Championships. Every child U9 and above at GLAC is eligible to compete in five to seven events.
ACTLAA championships
These Championships are for athletes who qualify through the Northside Regionals. They give
athletes a chance to compete against athletes from other clubs affiliated with ACTLAA. ACT Team
selections for ALA Championships (below) are announced after these championships.
ALA championships (ALAC)
ALAC is the premier event on the Australian Little Athletics calendar. In this event, 22 athletes in the
U13 age group and 4 athletes in the U15 age group are selected to represent the ACT in National
competition.
Club awards and presentation
The Club Awards are presented to little athletes at presentation day. Athletes must have competed
in at least 25% of the total number of events planned for the season to be eligible for the main
awards. Every child who is registered at our Club, and who does not receive a ‘special’ trophy will
receive a participation medal at the end of the season.
Champion awards
The Club champions and place getters in each age group are worked out by awarding points for
performances in each event competed in during the season. Gold, silver and bronze trophies are
awarded to the top 3 athletes in each age group, ie those with the highest overall point scores.
Points are awarded based on performance levels achieved on a weekly basis.
Improvement awards
These awards are made to the individual in each age group who has improved his/her performance
most frequently and who has participated in the most events. It is assessed by awarding 1 point for
each event and 4 points for each improvement.
Those children who place in the first 3 places in the Centre Championships are excluded from these
awards. However, this does not apply to age groups where there are only a very small number (3 or
fewer) of registered participants.
- - 29

Improvement trophies
These are awarded to the boy and girl in both junior (6-10) and senior (11-15) categories who achieve
the greatest number of individual performance improvements (personal bests). These awards are
decided on improvements only. The Club Champion place getters are also eligible for these awards.
Jennie Dean trophies
These two trophies are awarded to senior athletes who have excelled over the years at Ginninderra
Little Athletics and ACTLAA Competitions. One is awarded to a female athlete and the other to a male
athlete as decided by the Committee.
Colman trophies
These are awarded to the boy and girl athlete who most epitomise the meaning of Little Athletics, ie
Family, Fun and Fitness. The awards are decided by the Committee on the basis of nominations from
age marshals or members.
Ron Henderson Memorial Shield
This award is for the athlete showing most effort at training, as decided by the Head Coach.
Goldsmith Trophy
This award goes to the athlete providing most help and support to the club regardless of ability. The
award is decided by the Committee on the basis of nominations by age marshals or members.
Rohan Robinson Hurdler’s Trophy
This trophy donated by Australian Champion 400m hurdler Rohan Robinson, is awarded to the
athlete who achieves the best hurdles performance relative to the age group record.
President’s Shield
This shield was introduced by Geoff Bartley (President 2010-11). It is awarded to a non-Committee
member of the GLAC community to recognise assistance provided to the Club throughout the season.
Champion awards – performance levels
Points are awarded for each recorded event competed in throughout the season. Performance levels
for the award of achievement points are set as a percentage of a base performance (Black) taking
into account typical best performances and GLAC records for events in each age group. The required
percentage is consistent across all events and is set to ‘competed’ for 3 points, 60% for 4 points
(Green), 75% for 5 points (Red) and 90% for 6 points (Blue). The athletes with the most points at the
end of the season are awarded the age champion medals.
Nutritional Advice for Healthy Children
Weight gain and obesity is a huge problem in today’s society with many children currently
overweight. It’s important that we teach our children about healthy diets from an early age, so they
develop good eating habits that they will carry with them through their adult years. Here are some
basic guidelines to help you plan a healthy diet for your children.
• Enjoy a wide variety of nutritious foods
• Eat plenty of vegetables, legumes and fruits
• Eat plenty of cereals (including breads, rice, pasta and noodles)
• Include lean meat, fish and poultry
• Include low or reduced fat milks, yoghurts and cheeses
• Drink plenty of water
Weekly programs
In 2011-2012, the committee has decided to replace turbojav events in U6-U7 with a vortex throw. Also,
high jump for U6-U8 has been omitted from the programs to bring the club into line with ACTLAA
protocols. In the U6 age-groups, some modified skill acquisition activities may be incorporated into the
events under the direction of the committee and the club coaches. However, athletes will still receive 5
tickets each week to count towards their participation badges.
BE ACTIVE FOR LIFE!
Did you know heart disease is the major cause of death in Australia?
You are never too young or old to start taking care of your heart.
So 'Be Active for life', be Smoke Free and eat a wide variety of healthy
food to improve your heart health!
Be ACTIVE every day in as many ways as you can!
Make a habit of walking or cycling instead of using the car or do things
yourself instead of using labour-saving machines!
Remember it’s harder for heart disease to hit a moving target!
