Participants who complete this course will have a game plan for fundraising in place as
it relates to nonprofits. The course will analyze how non-profits are structure, how much
capital they need to raise, how to come up with a business plan, and how to use
creative fundraising techniques such as Web funding, Charity Based Auctions, Product

Introduction to Keyboarding
This course provides students with in-depth hands-on keyboarding experience.
Emphasis will be placed on exposing the students to learning the home row, top row as
well as bottom row keys. In addition, students will be given continuous keyboarding
drills which will enable them to improve their gross words per minute speed based on
one, three and five minute timings. Fee: $75.00

The Langston Hughes Project presents “Ask Your Mama: 12 Moods For Jazz” Featuring The
Ron McCurdy Quartet
The Langston Hughes Project is a multimedia concert performance of Langston
Hughes's kaleidoscopic jazz poem suite. Ask Your Mama is Hughes's homage in verse
and music to the struggle for artistic and social freedom at home and abroad at the
beginning of the 1960s. It is a twelve-part epic poem which Hughes scored with musical
cues drawn from blues and Dixieland, gospel songs, boogie woogie, bebop and
progressive jazz, Latin "cha cha" and Afro-Cuban mambo music, German lieder, Jewish
liturgy, West Indian calypso, and African drumming -- a creative masterwork left
unperformed at his death. Tickets: $10 Adults, $5 Children/Students and free with Palm

Clinics Can Help Awarded Grant To Expand Services - Organization Plans to Head West to Belle
Glade Where Need Is Great
Clinics Can Help, one of Palm Beach County’s only organizations that accept and
provide donations of gently used, unwanted medical equipment and supplies, is proud
to announce they are the recipient of a $100,000 grant from Allegany Franciscan
Ministries. “We have selected Clinics Can Help as a recipient for one of our major
grants because of the work they do for residents of Palm Beach County, said Upendo
Shabazz-Phillips, regional vice president for Allegany Franciscan Ministries. “They are a
very grassroots organization, with a simple mission, that is making a world of
difference.”

Quality Parenting Initiative – Foster Parenting Initiative
As daunting as any challenge currently facing this circuit’s child welfare system is our
need to significantly expand the local inventory of high quality foster homes.
Throughout Florida, communities have successfully responded to a similar challenge by
heartily embracing and effectively implementing the Quality Parenting Initiative (QPI).
ChildNet believes it imperative that we in Palm Beach County do the same. As its initial
step in making that happen, ChildNet will host two community meetings with Carole
Schauffer, Executive Director of the Youth Law Center and the Initiative's "creator" and
statewide leader. Attendance at the morning session will be limited primarily to child
placing agency, CBC lead agency and DCF licensing staff. The afternoon session,
however, will be opened up to the entire community of child welfare staff, stakeholders
and participants. It is crucial that you, your staff and your clients be well represented as
we together define and describe what quality foster parents look like and do and
develop local strategies for their timely, consistent and effective recruitment, training
and support. RSVP by Thursday, January 30, 2012.

Help is needed in Planning the 12th Annual REACH Health Fair
The Glades area P.A.T.C.H - Planned Approach to Community Health - invites those
who might be interested in working on the planning committee for the REACH Fair to
our Planning meetings. The 2013 REACH Fair will be on March 2nd, and will be held at
the CL Brumback Center in Belle Glade. It is a much anticipated annual event offering
free health exams to Glades area residents, targeting our most underserved and

Family Preservation Services of FL
Family Preservation Services of FL is a community-based provider of mental health
services serving all of Palm Beach County including the Glades area. Our offices are
located in Riviera Beach and at Glades Initiative in Belle Glade. At the present time, we
have 4 masters level clinicians and 1 licensed clinician serving the Glades area and
have openings for new referrals.
Services provided include:

VITA Program Promotion - Palm Beach Residents - Get Taxes Done For Free! (Household
Income Under $51,000)
Income Tax Assistance (VITA) Program, a free income tax-preparation service to
households earning annually $51,000 or less. For the 10th year, in January, we will
open several sites throughout Palm Beach County that will provide this service. Besides
the traditional VITA sites, this year we are implementing , Facilitated Self-Assistance
(FSA) service, if individuals have a simple tax return and need a little help or do not
have access to a computer, we offer the service at selected VITA locations and through
the websites of select community partners. This service is available to people who make
$57,000 or less. All the information related to this service is included in the attached

Red Cross Delivers Fire Safety Education with Martin Luther King Day of Service
BELLE GLADE, Fla. (January 23, 2013) — The Red Cross Palm Beaches-Treasure
Coast region continues its commitment to the Lake Region with volunteers set to fan out
across Belle Glade, South Bay, Pahokee and Canal Point on Saturday, January 26, to
deliver lifesaving fire safety tips to residents as part of a Martin Luther King Day of
Service initiative. Volunteers will go door-to-door from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. talking to
neighbors who are available, and will leave safety-tip door hangers for people who are
not at home. The door hangers, printed in both English and Spanish, provide cooking
and heating tips, highlighting the importance of smoke alarms and the need to create
and practice a fire escape plan. The Red Cross has partnered with Palm Beach County
Fire Rescue to coordinate the effort out of the Red Cross Belle Glade office and
firefighters will accompany volunteers as they canvass the region.

Gove Elementary is in the need of Community Members to Volunteer for Annual Career Week
Gove Elementary School’s annual Career Week is on the horizon. We hope that you will
volunteer to share your professional experiences with our students to make this week
truly rewarding. April 30th we are looking for community members to volunteer to speak
about their profession at Gove. You will be asked to give a short 20 minute presentation
about your job, education, training, and how you made the transition from school to your
current occupation. We are also looking for volunteers to share their work vehicle with
the students on May 1st from 8:30 am to 12:30 pm. The vehicles will be displayed at
Mace Park. Please be prepared to give a brief presentation regarding your profession

and vehicle. If you are interested in volunteering and/or have questions, please contact

Workforce Alliance offers $6.3 million in training grants for Palm Beach County businesses and
job seekers
WEST PALM BEACH — Workforce Alliance, the nonprofit organization chartered by the
state to lead workforce development in Palm Beach County, is offering $6.3 million in
grants to help local companies train and retain workers. Workforce is also offering
scholarships to help employees update their skills or train for a new career in a highdemand
field. The grant amount is more than double the previous program year.

Criminal Background Workshops
In collaboration with the Public Defender’s Office, the Workforce Alliance has scheduled
workshops at each career center to cover the following topics:
Criminal Backgrounds – felony vs. misdemeanor – how is obtaining employment
affected?
Loss of Civil Rights: including the loss of right to vote, the inability to run for public
office, and the loss of “certification” options (i.e.: state certifications)*Important for an
individual we refer to training and who will be unable to obtain a state certification
because of a felony conviction.
Restoration of Civil Rights – who is eligible and how long does it take? Adjudication –
what does this really mean? To seal or expunge a record – what are the guidelines?
How to read a “rap sheet” – “it isn’t always what is appears to be”.
It’s imperative that center staffs who work with our job seekers understand the
ramifications of a job seeker’s criminal background when they are counseling/guiding
that individual towards a specific career. RSVP is required for the session you want to
attend, seats are limited.

Be a Vendor at the 12th Annual REACH Health Fair

On March 2, 2013, Glades PATCH (Planned Approach To Community Health), the C.L.
Brumback Health Center, Everglades AHEC, Inc., Nova Southeastern University Health
Professions Division and over 100 local and coastal community health and social
service providers will once again come together to offer a one-of-a-kind Medical Mission
we fondly call "the Glades REACH Fair." Last year, over five hundred residents
attended and most of them accessed health care services. The Glades REACH Fair
was developed in 2001 in an effort to address the serious need for better access to
healthcare services in the Glades communities. This year, our annual event will be held
at the C.L. Brumback Center in Belle Glade, Florida from 9:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. This is
an enclosed, air-conditioned facility that will host our health fair, rain or shine. Each
participating agency will be provided a six-foot table and two chairs. All laws of Privacy
and HIPPA Regulations will continue to be strictly adhered to. Agencies not providing
direct medical services will be given space under several tents directly outside the
building and those providing direct medical services will be given rooms about the size
of a doctor's office exam room inside the facility.
In order to be provided with a display table, all vendors and agencies must be
available to stay for the entire event which runs until 3:30 p.m. Please note that
we have very limited space that will go quickly. Therefore, a timely response and
completed confirmation form is absolutely necessary. Additional information will be

The Glades Initiative offers Medical Interpreter Training in February 2013 in West Palm Beach
The Glades Initiative's Language Access Program is offering a 40 hour Medical
Interpreter training. This training is designed for bi-lingual staff who work in health &

Social Security Announces New Online Services Available with a my Social Security Account
Michael J. Astrue, Commissioner of Social Security, today announced the agency is
expanding the services available with a my Social Security account, a personalized
online account that people can use beginning in their working years and continuing
throughout the time they receive Social Security benefits. More than 60 million Social
Security beneficiaries and Supplemental Security Income (SSI) recipients can now
access their benefit verification letter, payment history, and earnings record instantly
using their online account. Social Security beneficiaries also can change their address
and start or change direct deposit information online.

Helping You Be Prepared for Human-Caused Disasters that Strike in Your Community: a Trauma
Skills Building Workshop
Disaster Ministry United Church of Christ in Florida. In the last five years, shootings and
other human caused events have been escalating in the United States. Incidents such
as “random” shooting incidents raise many questions particularly for pastors who face
the Sunday morning sermon; and, phone calls from members of their congregation
asking “why did this happen” and what should we do to help people affected. You are
invited to participate in a one-day skills-building workshop that will provide practical
tools and strategies for clergy to help their congregations deal with the presenting crisis,
and identify PTSD, anger and other issues that may arise following a human-caused

Flu Shot Available at South Florida Fair

The reported cases of influenza in Florida and throughout the county have been on the
rise. But historical data shows the majority of cases show up each year from Mid
February to Mid March. People still have time to protect themselves from the flu by
getting a preventive flu shot. The Palm Beach County Health Department is offering flu
shots on four dates at the South Florida Fair; January 18, 22, 24, and February 1 from
noon to 4 PM on each of the days. There is no charge for the vaccine but, persons will
have to obtain an admission ticket to the Fair.

Important Alert: United Way needs your help to advocate for Medicaid Expansion under the
Affordable Care Act
We need your help in advocating for Medicaid Expansion under the Affordable Care
Act. Over the next 2 months the Florida Legislative must decide whether or not to
expand Medicaid under the Affordable Care Act. Currently, any citizen or legal resident
at or below 100% of the Federal Poverty Level ($11,170 gross annual income) is eligible
for Medicaid, which provides subsidized health insurance coverage. Under the
Affordable Care Act, States have the option to raise the Federal Poverty Level threshold
to 138% ($15,420 gross annual income). If Florida does so, almost 1 million Florida
residents will be eligible for Medicaid coverage. These are low income (often
employed) individuals who do not have health insurance.

Medicaid Expansion Costs: Fantasy vs. Reality
Once again, Florida landed in the national Affordable Care Act (ACA) implementation
spotlight - but this time it was for one of the greatest budget “flip-flops” in Florida history!
In December, Florida's Agency for Health Care Administration released the most
inflated estimate to date of what Medicaid Expansion would cost the state. The $21.1
billion 10-year price tag was three times higher than its own estimate from earlier in the
year and four times higher than any other serious estimate. Read the Florida Center for
Fiscal and Economic Policy’s brief explaining why this estimate had no merit
whatsoever. Governor Scott went on the record touting this projection as a reason to
question whether Medicaid expansion is affordable or even possible.
