WDVA Secretary’s Column
by Donna Williams
Acting Secretary of the Wisconsin
Department of Veterans Affairs
—— Looking AheAd And Working TogeTher for VeTerAns ——
I am honored to serve as
the Acting Secretary of the
Wisconsin Department of
Veterans Affairs (WDVA).
As a woman veteran with
29 years of military service,
I am proud to have the
opportunity to lead the
agency and represent the
fastest-growing population of
veterans – women comprise
about 15 percent of the
military population currently.
There is a rewarding sense
of purpose for current service
members and new veterans.
Our Wisconsin veterans
community is a combination
of established veterans as
well as those who have been
serving in recent conflicts.
It is the combined duty and
tradition of all of us to work
together on each other’s
behalf, going forward into the
future.
As we look ahead during
the month of May, some
of the main issues in the
forefront for WDVA have been
presented and discussed
at meetings of the Wisconsin
Board of Veterans Affairs:
the department’s budget for
2011-13; the reorganization
plan (which was acted upon
by the Board and WDVA has
started to be put into place);
and the state of the Wisconsin
Veterans Homes, including
future plans for construction,
oversight and operations of a
new 72-bed Skilled Nursing
Facility at Chippewa Falls.
In the current economic
climate, times may be tight,
but the department will strive
to continue providing the best
quality of care, programs and
services veterans deserve.
There is a new segment
of veterans of Iraq and
Afghanistan, who will need our
support and encouragement
now more than ever, as they
face challenges and we
address program issues such
as Post-Traumatic Stress
Disorder (PTSD), Traumatic
Blast Injury (TBI), suicide and
homelessness prevention,
employment and job training,
health care and connections
with fellow veterans and
community groups.
At the end of May, we observe
a special holiday. Memorial
Day acts as a reminder to
us that the veterans who
passed, whom we honor and
remember, served to ensure a
better future for all who have
served after them, as well as
for the citizens of our nation.
Their reward would be in
knowing we are carrying our
proud traditions on into the
future.
Auxiliary Department President,
My name is Jim Hotvedt and I am
the new Chief of the Security/Fire/
Safety Bureau. Today I’m writing
as a guest for the Commandant’s
Column, but I intend to write a
monthly column for the Courier
with material that is relevant,
informative, and dare I hope,
possibly even entertaining to the
members of WVH-King and other
readers of this newsletter. But,
enough about me; my biography
was in last month’s issue.
The focus of this column is to
introduce you to the staff you have
most likely observed at work one
time or another on the grounds or
in the buildings. The full-timers
are eight dedicated individuals
who know this complex inside
and out. Their knowledge has
accumulated through years of
patrolling the halls, tunnels and
grounds, responding to medical
calls, fire calls, trespassers, dogs
and cats and any other type of call
that sometimes defies categorizing.
The experience represented by
these eight officers totals 136
years. Rounding out the schedule
are two limited term employees.
They are fully qualified to perform
at the same level as the full-time
officers, but must be teamed with
one of them while on duty.
completed their First Responder
Medical Refresher course, which
occurs in every two years. They
share in the duties of fire safety
inspections of all of our buildings,
fire drills, fire extinguisher
of fire alarm and sprinkler panels,
and taking over the telephone
switchboard for the home from
1630-0800 hours on weekdays and
all day on weekends and holidays.
Their list of duties and services is
hard to put a cap on, I think you
are starting to get the idea.
The Security/Fire/Safety building
at the Wisconsin Veterans Home
day, seven days a week. The
officers work in pairs putting in 12
shared duties, each officer serves
a separate function assisting
the Chief in administering the
As a Chaplain,
I often meet
people who
are stuck not
knowing the
next direction or step to take in life. Often
times, the individual doesn't realize the
reason they are stuck is that they have
lost a sense of life's purpose. I feel this
happens to all of us at some point in our
lives.
The Apostle Paul made profound
statements when he penned these words
found in Philippians 3:10, “That I
may know Him and the power of His
resurrection,” and in I Corinthians 2:2,
“For I decided to know nothing among
you, except Jesus Christ and Him
crucified.”
It is abundantly evident that Paul's life
purpose was to know Christ. He sought to
know Christ personally and how He was at
work in life’s circumstances. This pursuit
of discovery was the objective of Paul's
life.
Paul didn’t just seek to simply know
Christ for the first time, but to continually
seek to know what Christ wanted from
his life each and every day, as well as to
experience Christ’s power, in the course
of daily living. Paul was determined to
discover God's will and purpose for his
challenges and trials. Paul understood
that it was through difficulties that God
journeys with us, in order that He might
help us to see our need and help us in our
need to become more like Christ.
This is life's purpose—to become
more like Christ. So often we view life
so differently. However, in Heaven’s
economy, it is who we are or who we are
becoming that God is most concerned.
When we think about it, isn't this what
matters most? Isn't this what should
determine what we do and how we do it?
The other day, someone who is a life
coach client of mine was stuck and called
me. He was perplexed as he did not know
what to do. He wasn't sure what he should
do as it related to his future. Should he
take a job offer in another state or should
he remain where he is now? By the end of
our conversation, the bottom line came to
the surface when I asked him, “In God's
call in your life, who has He called you to
be?” There was a long silence and then,
"Hmm, that’s a good question."
In answering that question, my dear
friend began to make his choice of what
he was to do. You see, in responding to
who God wants us to be we can effectively
respond to what we will do. When we
discover who God desires us to become,
we can face life's challenges with the great
expectation that what we are becoming
in Him will certainly lead us to what we
ought to do in every life circumstance.
We simply make the choice based on
if it aligns with what God is doing or what
He would have done as it relates to our
character development.
“This is life’s purpose—to
become more like Christ.”
Not too long ago, a fellow Christian
felt the extreme need to sue the company
she worked for. This was a Christian
organization and she felt she had been
treated unfairly. Instead of trying to work
things out, she consulted an attorney.
What saddened me was when she
and her Christian attorney were asked
to sit down and reason together the best
course to pursue, the response was,
"NO, we have nothing to discuss. If the
company does not reply to our request as
we have demanded, they will be sued!" I
wondered, “Is this God's way to solve this
problem?” I thought, “Doesn't God's word
encourage us as Christians to come and
reason together?”
What was sad was that the Christian
lawyer didn't even see the wisdom in
seeking to glorify God by (1) learning all
the facts and clarifying the issues to effect
an optimal God glorifying outcome and
(2) seeing if indeed something could have
been worked out that would not only uplift
Jesus, but would demonstrate a powerful
witness to everyone involved as to what
God can do to bring reconciliation in the
body of Christ.
You see, as a Christian, the first thing
we should ask ourselves in any situation
is, "What is God's purpose in this?" Our
problem is that all too often we seek our
personal purpose and reasoning for what
we do without consulting God. The Bible
tells us of a leader of God, named Joshua,
who when he forgot to consult God, at a
place called Ai, experienced a great loss.
However, when he consulted God and
followed His direction he gained a great
victory. (Joshua 7 & 8) I believe a good
course of action in life is to remember to
make sure our purposes and decisions are
in tune with God's. This is imperative in
our Christian growth, as we must always
remember that, “My thoughts are not your
thoughts, neither are your ways my ways,”
declares the LORD.” Isaiah 55:8
As this is true as we grow in
positive character development, we must
constantly and consistently consult God
in all matters of our lives. We must be
seeking His purpose and not our own. For
it is in seeking and fulfilling God's purpose
that we glorify Him and accomplish with
great joy the direction and purpose of life
which He has designed for us. This must
be our life's direction and goal.
In life we too, like Paul, in all things
must seek to decide to know nothing else
in the midst of our making decisions and
life circumstance, but to know Christ,
Him Crucified and the power of His
resurrection. To do this and to have this
experience is life's ultimate purpose.
