Volunteerism – Making a Difference
in People’s Lives
On April 21st, the Wisconsin Veterans Home at King will once again
hold its annual Volunteer Recognition Day, a special day to thank all
those who volunteer their time and talents to enhance the lives of our
members of the Home.
This year, close to 370 volunteers will be honored. The number of
volunteer hours over the past year totals over 40,000 hours.
There are so many dedicated individuals and groups committed to
giving so much of themselves to help others. There are staff members
who go above and beyond what they do in their everyday work. There
are members of veterans organizations who help out where needed at
the Home, even by gathering funds for such items as electric shavers
for residents. And, there are members who serve as volunteers to help
each other.
Whether it’s taking time to help someone with a small task like reading
or writing a letter or pushing a wheelchair, it is greatly appreciated
by our members, their families, and by everyone at the Home and the
their own time and abilities to assist someone pass along the spirit of
teamwork, generosity, caring and looking out for their fellow citizens.
It’s an important mission you are carrying out.
Just as our members of the Home who are veterans served our nation,
they are continuing to serve others and are setting an example for all
of us. We, in turn, offer our best to them and their spouses. Wisconsin
All of the volunteer individuals, groups, staff members and residents
Workforce Development, Military Affairs,
Veterans Affairs and American Legion Team Up to
Host 2010 Veterans Job Fairs
The Wisconsin Departments of Workforce Development (DWD), Military Affairs
(DMA) and Veterans Affairs (DVA) are teaming up with the American Legion to
host a series of veterans job fairs across Wisconsin between March and October
2010.
“The Department of Workforce Development last year connected with one-fourth
of Wisconsin’s workforce, including approximately 8,000 veterans who received
employment and training services,” DWD Secretary Roberta Gassman said. “We
also know that a majority of veterans who receive services from veterans staff at
our Wisconsin Job Centers are obtaining job placements. On behalf of Governor
Doyle, we are pleased to be working with other state agency partners to reach out
even further to veterans and provide them with a wealth of employment-related
information and resources.”
“This unique partnership reflects Wisconsin's commitment to our returning
veterans and the Wisconsin National Guard is proud to be a part of providing this
opportunity,” said Brigadier General Don Dunbar, Adjutant General of Wisconsin
and Commander of the Wisconsin National Guard. "Our veterans offer unique and
significant capabilities to the private sector. They have served a cause larger than
themselves, understand teamwork and have applied leadership skills under difficult
conditions. I believe any employer who is looking for superb talent would do well
to consider Wisconsin's veterans."
DVA Secretary Kenneth Black added, “One of the most important ways Wisconsin
can help veterans, and especially our returning veterans, is to help them find jobs.
Employment is a key factor to their success in other aspects of their lives. The Wisconsin
Department of Veterans Affairs is pleased to partner with other agencies as part of our
mission to serve our veterans, including providing employment and job training services.”
Eighteen veterans job fairs will be held statewide, the first was March 11th at
Edgewood College in Madison, and the last will be October 15th at the Army
4

National Guard Armory in Superior. Employment agencies and employers will have
opportunities for direct hires. In addition, veterans can receive information about
state and federal benefits.
“It is heartening to see that in these challenging economic times, employment
opportunities not only exist for veterans, but that a team of experts has come together
to provide the opportunities for our most deserving citizens,” said Mike Rohan,
AmeriCorps VISTA Volunteer at the American Legion Auxiliary in Portage.
Local County Veteran Service Offices, along with the Employer Support of the
Guard & Reserve Program (ESGR), are also partnering in the job fairs and will be in
attendance to provide benefit information to both veterans and employers who attend.
“If you are a veteran looking for a job, or will need assistance in the future with
updating your resume, improving your job interview skills, finding employment, or
just obtaining benefit information, then come to a job fair,” DWD Office of Veterans
Services Director Ken Grant said. “If you are an employer and have a current vacancy,
or may be hiring in the future, and you are looking for an individual with skills,
someone who knows what teamwork and dedication is all about, then come to the
job fair and hire a Vet.”
For over three decades, spring has been ushered in with 32,000 blooming tulips at the
Wisconsin State Capitol. The flowers fill 28 flower beds adorning 13.5 acres of the Capitol
grounds. The tulips are Darwin Hybrids from the Netherlands and represent many different
colors. Each May, the bulbs are removed and replaced with a different design of flowers
keeping the Capitol Square in bloom until October when the tulips bulbs are planted again.
There is one extra special garden, a circular flower bed which honors Gold Star Mothers,
mothers who have lost a son or daughter in service to the United States. Since 1922, the
Capitol grounds have been home to a floral tribute of a golden star blossoming in spring and
throughout the garden season.

Vietnam Veterans Day
March 29
The Vietnam War, originally known as the Second Indochina War, began in September
1959. The United States entered the war when it deployed troops to Vietnam in 1965.
A classic struggle between those purveyors of communism and those of democracy, the
Vietnam War raised many doubts, fears, and questions among the American people, who
were deeply divided on the issues of this war. Never has this country protested so loudly
opposing a war, with rallies and protests being held at many universities and cities from
sea to sea. The war ended for America on April 30, 1975 as a final airlift took place from
the roof of the American embassy in Saigon. Regardless of the Country’s uproar, 165,000
brave soldiers from Wisconsin went to Vietnam, and 1,239 paid the ultimate sacrifice.
The 2009 Wisconsin Act 35 signed by Governor Jim Doyle on July 20, 2009 has
designated March 29 of each year as “Vietnam Veterans Day” in Wisconsin.
2009 Wisconsin Act 35 Signed July 20, 2009
An act to create 14.16 (16) of the statutes; relating to: the designation of Vietnam Veterans
Day. The people of the state of Wisconsin, represented in senate and assembly, do enact
as follows:
SECTION 1. 14.16 (16) of the statutes is created to read:
14.16 (16) VIETNAM VETERANS DAY. To recognize the 1,239 Wisconsin armed
forces members who are listed on the Vietnam Memorial Wall in Washington, D.C., and
to express pride and gratitude to the veterans of that war, March 29 is designated as the
“Vietnam Veterans Day.” The governor shall issue annually a suitable proclamation for
the observance of “Vietnam Veterans Day” and request that some portion of the day be
used to recall the Vietnam veterans’ accomplishments and to thank those veterans for
their service during that war.
CHAPLAIN’S COLUMN
submitted by Chaplain David Guerrero
Responding to Adversity
The period from 1861-1865 proved to be one of the greatest
periods of trial and suffering in our nation’s history. A
significant lapse of time had passed since America had
engaged in the horrors of war. After the War of 1812, little
memory remained of the fact that war could be “hell.” A
veteran of the war with Mexico, General “Stonewall” Jackson
wrote to his wife and said, “People who are anxious to bring on war don’t
know what they are bargaining for; they don’t see all the horrors that must
accompany such an event.”
We have just gone through the Christian time of year where we recall the
time when Christ went through a time of adversity, a time of war if you will,
to give “His life a ransom for many” (Matthew 20:28). As we examine
His life we can discover how to face life’s adversity with the same type of
resurrection triumph.
How do we respond to events of adversity? How do we respond to the
challenges and difficulties of things we must engage upon due to the decisions
and choices of someone else? At the center of the gospel, we find God’s
response in Christ to the fall of man. His example is the model (as well as
the answer) that we must seek.
In the midst of adversity, Christ set His face toward the task before Him by
prayerfully seeking His father’s face and His father’s will. In the midst of
adversity, Christ remained patient and chose His words wisely. In the midst
of adversity, Christ laid it all on the line so that the purpose of His surrendered
will to His father could be accomplished. Christ’s approach can successfully
be ours as we practice what He taught by word and example.
Chaplain News
I think of the story about Peter ten Boom who was the nephew of Corrie ten
Boom. For those who don’t know the story of the ten Boom legacy, their family
was instrumental in saving the lives of many people during the holocaust in
World War II. At the age of sixteen, Peter defied the Germans by playing the
Dutch national anthem in their church and the entire congregation stood up and
sang. For this act of defiance, Peter was imprisoned.
After World War II, Peter traveled the world with the same message as his aunt
Corrie ten Boom. During his speaking tour in Israel, Peter had a heart attack
and needed surgery.
The night before the operation, the cardiologist asked Peter, “Are you by chance
related to the ten Booms of Holland?” Peter replied, “Yes, that’s my family!”
The doctor responded, “I’m one of the babies that your family saved!”
The next day the man whose life had been saved forty years earlier, repaid the
debt by saving Peter’s life.
In times of difficulty, we are to look to our God, ask for His grace to respond to
His will. As we do this, we will sow seed not knowing where it might spring
up. There’s a saying, “What goes around, comes around!” It’s amazing how
God has a way of doing that. Let’s keep sowing, because we shall certainly
reap if we faint not (Galatians 6:9 KJV).
John Maxwell put it well when he said, “A difficult time can be more readily
endured if we retain the conviction that our existence holds a purpose — a
cause to pursue, a person to love, a goal to achieve.”
As we enter into this new season of sunshine, spring, and summer, may we
remain true to our God given purpose, people, and goals. Like Christ, the
ultimate outcomes will be out of this world.

ARE YOU INTERESTED IN
VOLUNTEERING?
Volunteering, especially at WVH-King, offers so many priceless
rewards! Volunteering at the Home can be tailored to your interests and
talents. Volunteers are needed to assist with bingo, reading or writing
letters for members, just simply visiting, getting fresh air, going fishing,
assisting in the library, helping in the coffee shop, going on shopping
trips or other bus trips, just to name a few.
If you are interested in joining our fantastic group of volunteers, please
contact Vicki Ponedel at (715) 258-5586 x2369 for more information.

VOLUNTEER
PAY
The following article is reprinted from the June 1983 Courier.
The author is unknown.
21
Home News
Many times folks have asked me, “Do you get paid for what you do at the veterans
home?” My answer has been “Certainly not—I am a volunteer.” That statement
started me thinking and I realized I was NOT giving the correct answer. Certainly,
I get paid!
I get paid when a member says “Thank you” for an eagerly looked-for letter. I
get paid when I get a smile for arranging a bouquet of flowers after freshening the
water.
I get paid in the satisfaction of knowing what may seem like a very insignificant
task—helping a member steady a cup—is actually at that moment the most
important thing in the world.
I get paid in knowing since there are people who must depend on others for help,
that I can give some part of that help. I get paid in the friendships I have made
and the associations I have enjoyed at the Veterans Home because I know these
people feel the same way I do—strong friendships makes one feel secure and no
amount of money can buy friendship.
There are many things in life which have no price tag and on which there is no
room for a dollar sign. It is a small part that I play in this big wide field of service,
but do you know something? I feel that I am the richest person in the world. No
one can offer me another job at a higher salary as there is no better paying job for
me. Do I get paid? CERTAINLY, I GET PAID!
If you are interested in volunteering at the Wisconsin Veterans Home at King,
please contact Vicki Ponedel at (715) 258-5586 x2369 for more information.

Library News
Library News
submitted by Librarian Linda Hagen and member Clifford Poppy
The library has added several books to its permanent collection. Following are some of those
books.
THE SABOTEURS by W.E.B. Griffin. The battle of the Atlantic is at its peak.
German U-boats are sinking U.S. supply ships, ships are burning in U.S. ports and
a series of explosions has altered trains and train stations around the country. Is it
all accidental or is it sabotage? Meanwhile, Allied Forces are secretly preparing
to invade Sicily and Italy, so there is a lot of work to be done. Wild Bill Donovan
assembles a crew for the work ahead. Soon they find themselves battling on two
fronts at once – and fate is about to deal them a few surprises.
THE INVISIBLE by Andrew Britten. Tensions between Pakistan and India are at
an all-time high. To complicate matters, 12 American climbers have disappeared
in the Hindu Kush mountains of Pakistan. The President is demanding answers
but none are forthcoming. As the conflict escalates the U.S. Government sends
an assistant Secretary of State to act as an intermediary between the leads of both
nations, as well as to ensure that all efforts are being made to find the missing
climbers. The Secretary vanishes without a trace when her motorcade is ambushed,
outside Islamabad, and her security agents are killed. Ryan Kealy has been a key
player in the War on Terror for the past decade, first in the Special Forces and
then with the CIA. He is now called to duty again, to sort out the problems in this
region, only this time the odds for success are slim to none.
THE BLACK STALLION by Walter Farley. Young Alec Ramsey first saw the
Black Stallion when his ship docked at a small port on the Red Sea. The Stallion
was a giant of a horse – all muscle, power and beauty. His mane swept in the wind
like a black flame. A white cloth was tied around his head to cover his eyes so he
could not see. He reared high into the air, his front legs striking viciously at the
men who were trying to get him aboard the ship. Little did Alec dream that this
mighty horse was destined to play an important part in his life. A strange bond
would grow between them that would lead them through untold dangers in their
journey to adventure in America.
COMES SPRING
written by member Georgiana Mika
The soul awakes,
To that bright golden orb.
A beautiful time,
It comes from the Lord.
The day is sunny,
But days can be drear.
Even then we know,
Spring is quite near.
The season of gay flowers,
And grass that’s so green.
A time to reflect on,
The wonder of Spring!
