123 Years of “<strong>Caring</strong> <strong>for</strong> America’s <strong>Heroes</strong>”<br />

The <strong>Wisconsin</strong> <strong>Veterans</strong> <strong>Home</strong> <strong>at</strong> <strong>King</strong>, loc<strong>at</strong>ed on the beautiful Waupaca Chain O’Lakes<br />

<strong>at</strong> N2665 County Road QQ will host its annual Open House celebr<strong>at</strong>ion on Sunday,<br />

May 16, 2010. Last year’s event drew over 2,000 visitors from across the St<strong>at</strong>e of <strong>Wisconsin</strong><br />

and beyond. “This is a gre<strong>at</strong> day <strong>for</strong> family, friends, volunteers and guests to join us <strong>for</strong> a full<br />

day of food, fun and activities,” remarked Jackie Moore, Acting Commandant.<br />

A sneak peek <strong>at</strong> the Open House line-up includes: music in the park by The Charlie Justmann<br />

Band, who will be per<strong>for</strong>ming a wide variety of music including polkas, waltzes, swing,<br />

country and modern rock. The “Chief Waupaca,” an authentic stern-wheel cruiser, will<br />

provide free bo<strong>at</strong> rides on the beautiful Chain O’Lakes courtesy of the Clearw<strong>at</strong>er Harbor.<br />

An authentic onground encampment of the Sons of Union <strong>Veterans</strong> of the Civil War,<br />

McAllister’s B<strong>at</strong>tery and the <strong>King</strong> Civil War Round Table will take place along with a trip<br />

down memory lane with the car show, antique military vehicles and old tractor displays. The<br />

Fox Valley Chapter of the Harley Owners Group will be in <strong>at</strong>tendance with approxim<strong>at</strong>ely<br />

100 of their members and cycles joining the Open House <strong>at</strong> noon. In<strong>for</strong>m<strong>at</strong>ion on the <strong>Veterans</strong><br />

<strong>Home</strong> employment, admission, and volunteer activities will be offered. Tours of the <strong>Home</strong>’s<br />

facilities, food booths and children’s games, including the huge rainbow infl<strong>at</strong>ables, will all<br />

be part of the day’s free events. Mini golf will be offered and “Uncle Sam” will greet visitors.<br />

A special addition to this year’s activities includes an opportunity to tour the Escanaba Mobile<br />

Vet Center. The Mobile Vet Center is the Department of <strong>Veterans</strong> Affairs l<strong>at</strong>est ef<strong>for</strong>t to reach<br />

out to the underserved veteran popul<strong>at</strong>ion of rural America.<br />

“Last year was touted as THE BEST Open House ever, and we plan to make this year’s event<br />

just as gre<strong>at</strong>! Everyone is invited to come and join in on the fun. There truly is something <strong>for</strong><br />

one and all,” added Moore.<br />

The <strong>Wisconsin</strong> <strong>Veterans</strong> <strong>Home</strong> <strong>at</strong> <strong>King</strong> has been proudly “<strong>Caring</strong> <strong>for</strong> America’s <strong>Heroes</strong>” <strong>for</strong> the<br />

past 123 years. Originally opened in 1887 with 50 beds, this hidden St<strong>at</strong>e jewel is oper<strong>at</strong>ed by<br />

the <strong>Wisconsin</strong> Department of <strong>Veterans</strong> Affairs and is home to almost 700 veterans. For more<br />
