A PROCLAMATION
WHEREAS, the Vietnam War began on September 26, 1959 as the Cold War military conflict called the "Second
Indochina War;" and
WHEREAS, it was a 16-year conflict between communist North Vietnam, which was supported by communist
allies, and the government of South Vietnam, which was supported by anti-communist nations, including the United
States; and
WHEREAS, the United States' involvement began with the first troop deployments in 1965 and lasted until the
capture of Saigon by the North Vietnamese army on April 30, 1975, which marked the end of the Vietnam War about
35 years ago when the last Americans withdrew from the rooftop of the U.S. Embassy in Saigon; and
WHEREAS, many citizens honored this country by serving in our nation's armed forces during the Vietnam era;
and
WHEREAS, there were over 165,000 service members from Wisconsin who served during the
Vietnam War; and
WHEREAS, 1,239 Wisconsin service members paid the ultimate sacrifice during the Vietnam War; and
WHEREAS, this generation of warriors served their country valiantly under difficult circumstances; and
WHEREAS, the people of the State of Wisconsin honor the service and sacrifice of the men and women who
served during the Vietnam era, and that of their families; and
WHEREAS, we honor their just and honorable devotion to country, and that service once rendered can never be
devalued; and
WHEREAS, it is fitting that during the first year of the observation of a special day in March each year to
honor veterans of the Vietnam War, that citizens of Wisconsin are holding a Vietnam Veterans Day celebration in Eau
Claire on March 27, 2010 and an "LZ Lambeau" event in Green Bay from May 21-23, 2010; and
WHEREAS, as a public expression in recognition of the 1,239 Wisconsin armed forces members who are listed
on the Vietnam Memorial Wall in Washington, D.C. and to express pride and gratitude to the veterans of that war, the
State of Wisconsin, by 2009 Wisconsin Act 36 enacted by my signature on July 20, 2009, has designated March 29
of each year as "Vietnam Veterans Day;"
NOW, THEREFORE, I, Jim Doyle, Governor of the State of Wisconsin, do hereby proclaim March
29, 2010, as
VIETNAM VETERANS DAY
throughout the state and encourage all Wisconsinites to honor and recognize those members of the United States armed
forces who served during the Vietnam War era for their dedicated service, sacrifice, and courage, and request that
part of the day be used to recall the Vietnam veterans’ accomplishments and to thank those veterans for their service
durnig that war.
