Head coach Dan Colella began his tenure at Duke with the 2005-
06 season and has since helped to build a program that is continually on
the rise, as the Blue Devil men's and women's swimming and diving squads
have made big strides in each of his two years at the helm.
In 2006-07, the Blue Devil men compiled a record of 4-5 (1-4
ACC), notching one more win than in the previous campaign, while the
women's squad went 5-4 (1-4 ACC) on the year, securing a winning
record and recording five victories for the second straight season. Each
team won an Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) dual meet for the second
consecutive year, as both squads began their conference seasons with a 1-
1 record, splitting in a tri-meet with N.C. State and Maryland at Taishoff
Aquatic Pavilion.
On Oct. 24, 2006, freshman Andrew Clark became the first men's
swimmer to garner ACC Performer of the Week honors since 2000, as he
posted two victories in his first collegiate meet, contributing 22 points
to the team score as the Blue Devils defeated UNC-Wilmington in their
season-opener.
At the 2007 ACC Championships, the Duke men placed ninth
while the women took eighth place, two places higher than the squad's
finish in 2006. Freshman Shannon Beall placed seventh in the 100
butterfly finals, while senior Jackie Rodriguez notched an NCAA "B"
standard in the 200 breaststroke preliminaries and went on to place
seventh in the final race.
Colella's first season at Duke saw the men's team match its win total
from 2004-05 and the women's team nearly double their win total from
2004-05. Both the men and the women posted an ACC dual meet victory
for the first time in a number of years - seven for the men and 12 for the
women - at the same meet at Maryland in November. The men finished
the season with a 3-6 (1-4 ACC) record while the women finished the
season at 5-6 (1-5 ACC).
At the ACC Championships in February, the Duke women's team
established three school records and the men threw out two records.
Senior Katie Ness earned All-ACC honors at the event while notching
four NCAA "B" standard times, as her team claimed the ACC Sportsmanship
Award. Ness was also named to the ESPN The Magazine Academic
All-District III list.
Colella brought to Duke skills from a successful career as head
coach of the women's swimming program at the University of Tennessee,
where his teams figured prominently on both the conference and
national level for 12 years. Ten of Colella's 12 teams at Tennessee
finished in the nation's top 25, including the 2004-05 team that tied for
24th. At the 2005 NCAA Championships, his team garnered 11 All-
America honors and broke five school records. Colella has coached 34
student-athletes to a total of 143 All-America honors and 18 of his
student-athletes have earned Southeastern Conference titles.
In just his third year of serving as head coach at Tennessee, Colella
guided one of the school's most successful teams to a top-10 showing at
the NCAA Championships where the team finished ninth. Along the way,
Colella's student-athletes picked up 30 All-America nods and Nicole
deMan won the school's first NCAA individual championship in the 50
free.
Colella's teams were known for their academic as well as athletic
achievements. Not only did he coach 15 individual Academic All-Americas,
his team also received the CSCAA Academic All-America Team
Award, earning an "Excellent" designation for GPAs between 3.00 and
3.24.
Colella's coaching accomplishments have not been limited to the
collegiate level, as he has tutored athletes who have competed in the
Olympic Games, Olympic Trials, Pan American Games, Pan Pacific
Games, World Championships and World University Games. Three of his
swimmers made appearances at the 2004 Olympic Trials, and former
Tennessee swimmer Fabiola Molina represented Brazil at the 2000
Olympics.
Colella arrived at Tennessee in 1990 as the assistant women's swimming
coach and served in that capacity until being promoted to head
coach in 1993. From 1986-90 he was the assistant swimming coach at
Indian River Community College in Fort Pierce, Fla., where he helped
guide his team to four NJCAA men's and women's championships. He
taught science at Fort Pierce Central High School in 1985-86 while also
serving as the school's assistant swimming coach.
Colella earned a bachelors degree in natural resource management
and geology from the University of the South in Sewanee, Tenn., in
1984. In addition to being a member of the Order of the Gownsmen, an
academic honor society, and Beta Theta Pi, Colella was a member of the
school's swimming team. He served as captain for two years and earned
three accolades as the team's MVP from 1981-83. Colella earned two
Southern College Athletic Conference titles by winning the 100 and 200
backstroke in 1981. Over the course of his collegiate career, he never fell
below seventh place in the conference in any individual event. Specializing
in butterfly and individual medley events, Colella was the University's
all-time leading scorer in championship meets when he graduated.
Colella and his wife, Victoria, have two children, Henry and George,
and reside in Chapel Hill, N.C. The couple is soon to adopt two daughters,
Ellinor and Caroline, from Vietnam in December 2007.
Andy Scott
Dawn Chuck joined the Duke swimming and diving staff in 2005-
06 as an assistant swimming coach and has played an integral role in the
development of an up-and-coming program, as the Blue Devil swimming
and diving squads continue to become a force to reckon with in the lanes
and on the boards.
In 2006-07, Chuck helped coach the Blue Devil men and women to
marks of 4-5 (1-4 ACC) and 5-4 (1-4 ACC), respectively. Over the
season, she saw freshman Andrew Clark become the first Duke men's
swimmer to garner ACC Performer of the Week honors since 2000 as
Clark won two events in his first collegiate meet in a Duke win over
UNC-Wilmington; three divers produce NCAA Zone qualifying scores in
Duke's first home meet of the season; and two Duke women reach the
finals of a 2007 ACC Championship race in Shannon Beall (100
butterfly) and Jackie Rodriguez (200 breaststroke). Rodriguez also
notched an NCAA "B" standard at the championships.
Chuck's first season saw the men's team finish with a record of 3-6
(1-4 ACC) and the women's team finish with a record of 5-6 (1-5 ACC),
as each team posted an ACC dual-meet victory for the first time in a
number of years at the same meet in Maryland. Chuck saw senior Katie
Ness earn All-ACC honors, as the senior was also named ESPN The
Magazine Academic All-District III.
A graduate of Brown University and eight-year member of the
Jamaican National Swimming Squad, Chuck brought extensive international
and collegiate swimming experience to the Duke team. She is a
two-time participant in the Olympic Games, having represented Jamaica
in 2000 and 2004, and has earned medals in the Carifta Games, Caribbean
Island Swimming Championships, Centro Americano y del Caribe
Nataciones and Caribbean and Central American Games. Chuck also represented
Jamaica at the Pan American Games in 1999 (Winnipeg) and
2003 (Santo Domingo), and the Commonwealth Games in 2002
(Manchester), and added even more national experience to her resume
this past year, as she was the coach for the Jamaican National Team at
the 2007 World Championship meet in Melbourne, Australia. The meet
was Chuck's first international competition as a coach.
Chuck graduated in 2002 with a bachelor of science degree in Psychology
from Brown, where she was team captain of the swim team her
senior year and is still in the record books for being a member of the 400
free and 800 free relay teams that set school records in 2001. She was the
Ivy League Champion in the 200 free in 2001 and the 100 free in 2002,
and participated in the 2002 NCAA Championships.
Chuck went on to earn a masters degree in Human Performance at
the University of Florida in 2005. While in Gainesville, she worked as a
swim instructor for Swim America of Gainesville and the Gator Swim
Club. The position at Duke is her first at the collegiate coaching level.
Chuck is originally from Kingston, Jamaica, but joins her sister,
Mariana, in Durham. Mariana, who swam at Brown from 2001-05, is
pursuing a graduate degree at Duke.
While on the swim team at the University of Miami, Keim won the
NCAA Championship on the three-meter board and platform in 1999
and 2000. She was a three-time All-America selection for the Hurricanes
from 1998-2000.
Upon graduation, Keim began coaching the Liberty Diving Team in
2004 and in 2006, the men's team placed sixth at the Junior Nationals.
Her national experience includes participating in the 1996 and 2000
Olympic Games in the three-meter individual and 10-meter synchronized
Blue Devil Tradition and Athletic Excellence
Duke University is an institution rich with tradition and its athletic program ranks
among the finest in the entire nation. For the third straight year, Duke University was the
top-ranked Division I school in the 2007 National Collegiate Scouting Association Power
Rankings, which take a school's Directors' Cup, U.S. News & World Report and NCAA
graduation rate rankings into account. Duke also claimed the top Division I spot in 2005 and
2006.
Duke’s marks in 2007 included No. 8 on the U.S. News & World Report, No. 11 in the
Directors' Cup and No. 16 for NCAA Graduation Rate for a power ranking of 11.66. Duke
now has three No. 1 power rankings in the NCSA's four-year history of producing them. Duke
received a No. 7 ranking in 2004 before claiming the top spot each of the last three years, and
for all NCAA divisions combined, Duke ranked No. 8 in 2004, No. 3 in 2005 and No. 4 in
2006.
Duke has been a very successful post-season school, sending multiple teams every year
to the NCAA Tournament, as 17 teams represented Duke University in NCAA Tournament
post-season competition in 2006-07. Overall, nine Blue Devil teams have captured national
championships - men’s basketball in 1991, 1992 and 2001, women’s golf in 1999, 2002,
2005, 2006 and 2007 and men’s soccer in 1986.
Duke Swimming & Diving - A Brief History
In 2006-07, both Blue Devil squads showed signs of improvement, as veterans combined
with talented, young student-athletes. On the women’s side, freshman Julie Brummond
reached the finals at the NCAA Zone B Diving Championships on the 1- and 3-meter boards
to put together one of the best all-time performances at Duke. Earlier in the season, Brummond
broke a six-year-old record on the 1-meter board in her first collegiate meet. On the men’s
side, sophomore Nick Campisano bested his own school record on the three-meter board in
Duke’s first home meet of the season, while at that same meet, freshman Eric Winnard also
beat Campisano’s previous school record. Freshman Andrew Clark then became the first
men’s swimmer to garner ACC Player of the Week honors since 2000.
The 2005-06 season saw Duke break six school records, as Campisano broke a 47-yearold
record on the 3-meter board at the Patriot Invitational and the Duke women broke three
records and the men broke two records at the ACC Championships. On her way to her fourth
All-ACC honor, Katie Ness set a 100 backstroke record and combined with Danielle
Spearman, Nora Stupp and Julia Lewis to establish a 200 medley relay record. Spearman,
Stupp, Lewis and Anna Rogers also set a 200 freestyle relay record. The 2005-06 men’s
squad saw Billy Pearce establish a 200 back record in his last race as a Blue Devil and Kevin
Arthofer broke his own 100 breaststroke record twice in one day at the ACC Championships.
In 2004-05, the women’s team had a tough act to follow after setting 14 records in
2003-04, but Spearman, Ness, Stupp and Lewis swam school-best times in the 400 free and
200 medley relays. The men’s team set seven school records, as Arthofer shattered All-
America Eric Steinhouse’s 24-year-old 100 breast mark and John Humphrey swam
Duke’s fastest 100 fly. David Peck notched two top times in the 100 and 200 back and the
men also earned best times in the 200 free, 200 medley and 400 medley relays.
In 2003-04, Ness became Duke’s first ACC Champion and NCAA Championship participant
since 1981. She qualified for the 200 IM after winning the ACC Championship with
an automatic qualifying time. Ness also notched All-ACC honors in the 100 fly with another
Duke record-breaking mark and a new 800 freestyle relay record was established while Amy
Halligan shattered the nearly quarter-century old 400 IM record. Jackie Rodriguez also
broke a pair of 23-year-old distance free records set by Olympian Nancy Hogshead. The
2003-04 men’s team established a new record in the 800 free relay and Humphrey swam
school-best 200 and 400 IM times.
The history of Duke’s swimming and diving programs dates back to 1927. The Blue
Devils have had just four coaches, including Duke Hall of
Fame member Jack Persons, who coached the Blue Devils
for 46 years. Former head coach Bob Thompson, who retired
in 2005 after 26 seasons, had the second-longest swimming
and diving coaching streak in school history.
Hogshead is the most celebrated swimmer in school history.
A four-time ACC Champion and a two-time All-America
selection at Duke, Hogshead still owns school records in two
events. She went on to capture four medals (three gold and
one silver) at the 1984 Olympics in Los Angeles, Calif., and
for her accomplishments, became the first female inducted
into the Duke Sports Hall of Fame in 1994.
On the men’s side, Don Schumacher, Steve Smith
and Eric Steinhouse were all three-time ACC Champions.
Steinhouse, an All-America selection in both the 100 and
200 breast in 1980, was the ACC Swimmer of the Year and
finished fourth in the 100 breaststroke at the 1980 NCAA
Championships. He was inducted into the Duke Sports Hall
of Fame in 2007.
The Duke University Swimming and Diving team continues to be a model for academic excellence
among its peers. Duke’s student-athletes balance team and academic commitments at one of
the top universities in both fields in the country.
In 2006-07, three Blue Devil women and three Duke men were named to the All-ACC
Academic Swimming & Diving squads, as seniors Jackie Rodriguez and Jacob McCafferty,
junior Danielle Spearman and freshmen Julie Brummond, Tim McKeever and Eric Ness
received league academic honors. Forty-three members of the Blue Devil swimming and diving
teams notched a GPA of over 3.0 for the full academic year to earn a spot on the ACC Honor Roll,
as Duke led all schools for the 18th consecutive year with 394 student-athletes on the list.
Last season’s academic accomplishments were capped off by the Duke men’s and women’s
swimming teams posting a GPA of 3.369 over the winter and spring semesters, a mark that ranked
fifth in the nation, as was announced by College Swimming Coaches Association Of America. The
Blue Devil men’s team produced a team GPA of 3.282, the 11th-highest mark among NCAA
Division I men’s squads, while the women’s squad compiled a team GPA of 3.456, the 16th-highest
mark among NCAA Division I women’s teams.
The academic highlights of 2005-06 included Katie Ness being selected to the ESPN The
Magazine Academic All-District III team. Ness was also an ESPN The Magazine Academic All-
America second team honoree and received a Weaver-James-Corrigan Postgraduate Scholarship. In
addition, 37 team members were named to the 2005-06 ACC Honor Roll.
An emphasis on academics is not limited to the swimming and diving team. At a time when
college athletics are under close scrutiny for academic shortcomings, the entire Duke athletic
program remains a shining example of what can be accomplished with the proper perspective. The
commitment to excellence is obvious in all of Duke’s sports programs.
All Blue Devil teams have graduation rates near 100 percent every year. Duke’s athletes
combined to register a cumulative 3.1 GPA in 2006-07 and 21 teams had a collective GPA higher
than 3.0 during the spring semester.
The Duke administration and the athletic department both embrace the philosophy that
receiving a meaningful degree is the primary goal of attending college. As a result, Duke has
compiled one of the nation’s most impressive reputations for its dedication to excellence on and off
the field. Associate Director of Athletics, Brad Berndt, oversees the Blue Devils academic support
program. Berndt helps student-athletes with course selection and monitors their progress toward
graduation, and also oversees the tutoring program, which is available to all athletes who desire
extra help. Associate Director of Athletics and Senior Women’s Administrator, Jacki Silar, also
provides academic support.
An additional asset for the student-athletes is the Campbell Academic Center (pictured below,
left), which is located on the second floor of the Schwartz-Butters Athletic Center, and houses areas
for student-athletes to study along with desktop and laptop computers.
Scheduled to open in January of 2008, the Michael W. Krzyzewski Center - Dedicated to
Academic & Athletic Excellence (pictured below, right), will nearly triple the existing space to
expand tutoring, computer resources, counseling and team study space for Duke’s 600-plus studentathletes.
The three-story, 56,00 square-foot $15.2 million facility will be a first-class athletics
complex designed to inspire, enhance and celebrate Duke University’s extraordinary student-athletes
in all 26 intercollegiate sports.
Why has Duke’s athletic program excelled on the academic front? In part, the answer lies in
the type of student-athletes recruited by Blue Devil coaches and the admissions process itself. One
of the chief criteria is the projected ability to graduate and coaches make that a priority in
recruiting. But, in essence, it all goes back to commitment and to the desire to field a program that
features true student-athletes.
At Duke University, the institution remains confident that a distinguished school can play a
significant role in intercollegiate athletics, while at the same time developing young adults to lead
our world into a new generation and beyond. Student-athletes choosing Duke get the best of both
worlds. The value of Duke’s commitment to its athletes can be seen in the careers that many of
them choose after college; they are doctors, lawyers, engineers. Some go directly into the job
market, while others head to graduate school. No matter the plans, a Duke degree is an invaluable
commodity. That’s why choosing a college is not just a four-year decision.
Duke University was created in 1924 by
James Buchanan Duke as a memorial to his
father, Washington Duke. The Dukes, a
Durham family who built a worldwide financial
empire in the manufacture of tobacco
and developed the production of electricity
in the two Carolinas, had long been interested
in Trinity College. Trinity traced its
roots to 1838 in nearby Randolph County
when local Methodist and Quaker communities
joined forces to support a permanent
school, which they named Union Institute.
After a brief period as Normal College (1851-
59), the school changed its name to Trinity
College in 1859 and affiliated with the Methodist
Church.
The college moved to Durham in 1892
with financial assistance from Washington
Duke and the donation of land by Julian S.
Carr. In December 1924, the school’s trustees
gratefully accepted the provisions of
James B. Duke’s indenture creating the family
philanthropic foundation, The Duke Endowment,
which provided, in part, for the
expansion of Trinity College into Duke University.
As a result of the Duke gift, Trinity underwent
both physical and academic expansion.
The original Durham Campus became
known as East Campus when it was rebuilt
in stately Georgian architecture. West Campus,
Gothic in style and dominated by the
soaring 210-foot tower of Duke Chapel,
opened in 1930. Academic expansion of the
university included the establishment of new
graduate and professional schools.
Modern times have seen Duke realize its
founder’s aspirations to become a major center
of learning. The Duke University Medical
Center has achieved international prominence,
and many Duke schools and departments
are consistently ranked among the
nation’s best.
A mainstay among the elite Division I athletic
programs, Duke University once again ranked near the top
during the 2006-07 athletic year. The women’s golf team
collected its fifth NCAA Championship while the field
hockey, women’s lacrosse and men’s lacrosse squads
advanced to the NCAA Final Four.
The Blue Devils registered three ACC Tournament
and five league regular season titles on the year.
Duke was also very successful nationally in 2006-07
as 15 teams competed in NCAA Tournament action. The
Blue Devils had five teams finish in the top-10 of the national
rankings. Here is a sampling of Duke’s accomplishments:
• Shannon Rowbury became the first Blue Devil women’s
track & field member to claim NCAA Champion honors as
she ran a 4:42.17 mile at the NCAA Indoor Championship.
• The Blue Devils had three National Player of the Year
honorees (Amanda Blumenherst, Matt Danowski and
Lindsey Harding), one National Defensive Player of the
Year (Harding), one Rhodes Scholar (Chas Salmen) and
one Lowe’s Senior Class Award winner (Alison Bales).
• Fourteen Blue Devils were selected Academic All-
America/National Scholar Athlete.
• A total of 29 student-athletes were selected All-
America during the season, while Duke boasted 50
All-ACC selections.
• Four Blue Devils were named ACC Player of the
Year— Amanda Blumenherst (women’s golf),
Matt Danowski (men’s lacrosse), Lindsey Harding
(women’s basketball) and Ali Hausfeld (volleyball).
• Four Duke teams earned No. 1 national rankings during
the season — women’s basketball, women’s golf, men’s soccer
and men’s lacrosse— and four other teams achieved a
ranking of No. 5 or better— field hockey (4), women’s lacrosse
(2), men’s basketball (5) and women’s cross country
(5). Women’s Basketball and women’s golf each finished the
season ranked No. 1 nationally.
• Shannon Rowbury and Debra Vento received NCAA
Postgraduate Scholarships.
• Women’s soccer sophomore Christie McDonald was
awarded the Wilma Rudolph Student Athlete Achievement
Award after coming back from having brain surgery over
the summer of 2006. She started 18 of 21 matches after
returning.
• Duke student-athletes registered a 3.1 grade point average
during the 2006-07 school year. A total of 26 varsity
teams at Duke had a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher following
the 2006-07 academic year.
