Blue Devil Tradition and Athletic Excellence
Duke University is an institution rich with tradition and its athletic program ranks
among the finest in the entire nation. For the third straight year, Duke University was the
top-ranked Division I school in the 2007 National Collegiate Scouting Association Power
Rankings, which take a school's Directors' Cup, U.S. News & World Report and NCAA
graduation rate rankings into account. Duke also claimed the top Division I spot in 2005 and
2006.
Duke’s marks in 2007 included No. 8 on the U.S. News & World Report, No. 11 in the
Directors' Cup and No. 16 for NCAA Graduation Rate for a power ranking of 11.66. Duke
now has three No. 1 power rankings in the NCSA's four-year history of producing them. Duke
received a No. 7 ranking in 2004 before claiming the top spot each of the last three years, and
for all NCAA divisions combined, Duke ranked No. 8 in 2004, No. 3 in 2005 and No. 4 in
2006.
Duke has been a very successful post-season school, sending multiple teams every year
to the NCAA Tournament, as 17 teams represented Duke University in NCAA Tournament
post-season competition in 2006-07. Overall, nine Blue Devil teams have captured national
championships - men’s basketball in 1991, 1992 and 2001, women’s golf in 1999, 2002,
2005, 2006 and 2007 and men’s soccer in 1986.
Duke Swimming & Diving - A Brief History
In 2006-07, both Blue Devil squads showed signs of improvement, as veterans combined
with talented, young student-athletes. On the women’s side, freshman Julie Brummond
reached the finals at the NCAA Zone B Diving Championships on the 1- and 3-meter boards
to put together one of the best all-time performances at Duke. Earlier in the season, Brummond
broke a six-year-old record on the 1-meter board in her first collegiate meet. On the men’s
side, sophomore Nick Campisano bested his own school record on the three-meter board in
Duke’s first home meet of the season, while at that same meet, freshman Eric Winnard also
beat Campisano’s previous school record. Freshman Andrew Clark then became the first
men’s swimmer to garner ACC Player of the Week honors since 2000.
The 2005-06 season saw Duke break six school records, as Campisano broke a 47-yearold
record on the 3-meter board at the Patriot Invitational and the Duke women broke three
records and the men broke two records at the ACC Championships. On her way to her fourth
All-ACC honor, Katie Ness set a 100 backstroke record and combined with Danielle
Spearman, Nora Stupp and Julia Lewis to establish a 200 medley relay record. Spearman,
Stupp, Lewis and Anna Rogers also set a 200 freestyle relay record. The 2005-06 men’s
squad saw Billy Pearce establish a 200 back record in his last race as a Blue Devil and Kevin
Arthofer broke his own 100 breaststroke record twice in one day at the ACC Championships.
In 2004-05, the women’s team had a tough act to follow after setting 14 records in
2003-04, but Spearman, Ness, Stupp and Lewis swam school-best times in the 400 free and
200 medley relays. The men’s team set seven school records, as Arthofer shattered All-
America Eric Steinhouse’s 24-year-old 100 breast mark and John Humphrey swam
Duke’s fastest 100 fly. David Peck notched two top times in the 100 and 200 back and the
men also earned best times in the 200 free, 200 medley and 400 medley relays.
In 2003-04, Ness became Duke’s first ACC Champion and NCAA Championship participant
since 1981. She qualified for the 200 IM after winning the ACC Championship with
an automatic qualifying time. Ness also notched All-ACC honors in the 100 fly with another
Duke record-breaking mark and a new 800 freestyle relay record was established while Amy
Halligan shattered the nearly quarter-century old 400 IM record. Jackie Rodriguez also
broke a pair of 23-year-old distance free records set by Olympian Nancy Hogshead. The
2003-04 men’s team established a new record in the 800 free relay and Humphrey swam
school-best 200 and 400 IM times.
The history of Duke’s swimming and diving programs dates back to 1927. The Blue
Devils have had just four coaches, including Duke Hall of
Fame member Jack Persons, who coached the Blue Devils
for 46 years. Former head coach Bob Thompson, who retired
in 2005 after 26 seasons, had the second-longest swimming
and diving coaching streak in school history.
Hogshead is the most celebrated swimmer in school history.
A four-time ACC Champion and a two-time All-America
selection at Duke, Hogshead still owns school records in two
events. She went on to capture four medals (three gold and
one silver) at the 1984 Olympics in Los Angeles, Calif., and
for her accomplishments, became the first female inducted
into the Duke Sports Hall of Fame in 1994.
On the men’s side, Don Schumacher, Steve Smith
and Eric Steinhouse were all three-time ACC Champions.
Steinhouse, an All-America selection in both the 100 and
200 breast in 1980, was the ACC Swimmer of the Year and
finished fourth in the 100 breaststroke at the 1980 NCAA
Championships. He was inducted into the Duke Sports Hall
of Fame in 2007.
