Presbyterian college women’s soccer
Presbyterian College women’s soccer enters the 2010 season with a
healthy stable of returning student-athletes to go along with exciting new
freshman talent. Head coach Brian Purcell returns for his 22nd season in
charge of the Blue Hose while new assistant coach Samar Azem begins her PC
coaching career. The Blue Hose will look to rebound following last season’s
3-12-2 record.
FORWARDS
On the Blue Hose attack, three student-athletes return from last year’s
squad including the top goal scorer, Kate Baker. In 2009, the striker closed
the season with three goals. “Kate is just a natural goalscorer,” said Purcell.
“She has been one of our most dangerous scoring threats over the last
three years.” Joining the senior on attack is junior Lauren Snyder. “Lauren
is simply an athlete,” said Purcell. “She is fast, can change directions well
and can defend stronger than most other strikers.”
Sophomore Kylie Mills played in all 17 games last season and started
three. “Kylie had a great spring for us this year,” said Purcell. “She is a
physically strong attacker who can deal with the physical challenges of
other players better than anyone else on the team.” Joining the forwards
this season is freshman Sara Simpson. The Columbia, S.C., native is a quick
player that can be very dangerous. “Sara is a very talented student-athlete,”
said Purcell. “She’s as clever with the ball at her feet as anyone else on our
team.”
MIDFIELD
The midfield corps is headlined by senior Stephanie Aaron who led the
team with four assists last season. “Stephanie is one of our fastest players
and came into camp in great physical shape,” said Purcell. “When she is at
her best, she really makes us a better team.” Senior Katie Hunter also works
in the midfield. “Katie has fought injury her whole career, but when she is
healthy, she can be one of our best players,” said Purcell.
2010 PREVIEW
Moving from the backline into the midfield this season is senior Melanie
Martin. “We’re really excited to see Melanie move into a more attacking
role on a full-time basis,” said Purcell. “She is a fast and athletic player that
can wreak havoc in the attacking third.” Another senior vying for playing
time is Meghan Skinner. The Mt. Pleasant, S.C., native will get to play in
her hometown this season as PC plays twice at the College of Charleston.
“Meghan is a very smart and skillful player who is a great team leader,” said
Purcell. “She does a great job of putting the team first and working hard
whether in practice or in games.”
Junior Morgan Fragapane returns in the midfield with one goal last year
to her name. “Morgan is one of our most talented kids,” said Purcell. “Her
energy level is a real value for the team. She plays with a reckless abandon
which inspires her teammates.” Alice Blackwell is one of PC’s most versatile
players, garnering playing time both in the midfield and in defense. “Alice
really is one of the rock steady players on our team,” said Purcell. “She is
smart, a technically sound player and doesn’t make mistakes which is a great
quality to have.”
Sarah Kustick saw limited time last year as a freshman, but has worked
to improve her game. “Sarah worked hard to improve more than anyone
else on the team over the spring and summer,” said Purcell. “She has made
great strides in her distribution skills and can become a key player in the
future for the Blue Hose.” Freshman Emily Boggus will look to break into the
midfield lineup this year. “Emily has a little bit of everything,” said Purcell.
“She is quick, skillful, fit and smart.”
Sophomore Abi Thompson is recovering from an injury sustained during
the spring season and will hope to be cleared in the middle portions of the
season.
2010 PREVIEW
DEFENSE
Despite the loss of senior captain Rachel Lamb, the Blue Hose return
one of their most experienced players in program history in Renee Ballew.
She has played nearly every minute in her career at PC. “Renee is one of
the most vocal leaders on our team,” said Purcell. “She is very quick and
tackles very well. We are very excited about how fit she is coming into camp.”
Jessica Kramer is a junior from Acworth, Ga., who played in 16 matches
last season. “Jessica is a hard working, very fit and tenacious player,” said
Purcell. “She has improved her skills since the end of last season and those
improved skills can really help us this season.”
Sophomore Townley Cheek played 14-games last season as a freshman
and will serve as the SAAC representative for the team. “Townley always
seems to be at her best when the big games start,” said Purcell. “She has a
very high success rate in completing passes and winning tackles.”
Five of the Blue Hose freshmen are defenders and are led by Brittany
Whitson. “Brittany is one of the most composed players on the ball that
we’ve had on our team in some time,” said Purcell. “She has a terrific
physique for the game and a great skill set.” Tori Lopez is a very experienced
at playing at a high level from her club career. “Her experience shows up
in her play,” said Purcell. “She makes great decisions on the field and will
fight for playing time immediately.”
Stephanie Allen is an Augusta, Ga., native player that can compete
in defense and in the midfield. “Stephanie is a strong, smart and skillful
player,” said Purcell. “She will also be another option on free and corner
kicks.” Rebecca Miller is a versatile player that can help out in the attack.
“Rebecca is one of our strongest players physically,” said Purcell. “I’m excited
to see how she will fit into the squad.” Mariana Anderson comes to the Blue
Hose from Anderson, S.C., after a prep career at T.L. Hannah H.S. “Mariana
is a really intense competitor,” said Purcell. “She is a hard worker and very
driven to improve. She has the tools to be a very good defender.”
GOALKEEPERS
Sarah Beth Anderson returns in goal with experience after the junior
split time a year ago. “Sarah Beth is one of our captains and a leader within
the team,” said Purcell. “She is probably the best shot-stopper that I’ve
coached in my 22 years. She has the ability to keep us in games singlehandedly.”
Freshman Jordan Broadway joins PC in goal from Chapin, S.C. “Jordan
had a great preseason and has exceeded our expectations of her,” said
Purcell. “She is a great athlete in addition to being a great goalkeeper. She
played basketball in high school and also saw time as a field player on the
pitch. She has a great game sense and has been a very pleasant surprise in
camp this year.”
The 2010 schedule is one of the toughest in school history as the Blue
Hose will visit Clemson and host Navy in the season’s opening weekend.
Trips to College of Charleston, Wofford and Eastern Kentucky dot the nonconference
schedule to go along with home contests against North Florida
and local rival Furman. Ten of PC’s 19 games will be played at Martin Stadium
and five Big South games taking place in Clinton.
“We’ve picked up some exciting, big games,” said Purcell. We visit
Clemson and Davidson, but Navy and North Florida will come to Clinton.
We’ve got some local rivalry games on the schedule (Furman, Wofford and
Francis Marion). That is all in addition to our league season where every
game is a barnburner.”
Pu r c e l l
Brian Purcell begins his 22nd year as the head
coach of the Presbyterian College women’s
soccer program. Since he has been in charge,
Purcell has posted an overall mark of 220-
128-17 since the program’s inception in 1989.
Purcell is an alumnus of PC.
Purcell’s 2009 squad finished the season
winless in the BIg South Conference but
recorded a pair of memorable draws against
Big South teams. In the middle portion of the
season, PC drew Coastal Carolina, 2-2 at home
before taking points of Big South regular season
champion Liberty on the final day of the season.
His team took non-conference victories over
South Carolina State, Wofford and The Citadel.
In 2008, Purcell’s team recorded its firstever
win over a Big South Conference foe as
a conference member, beating Gardner-Webb
2-0 on Oct. 1. The squad then shut out Francis
Marion for its third straight shutout. Under
Purcell’s direction, defender Rachel Lamb
garnered first-team all-conference accolades.
Purcell has guided the team through many
changes including the jump to Division I in
2007. The Blue Hose finished 6-7-1 that year,
beating their future league co-members High
Point, Radford and VMI. PC retained the edge
when playing at home with a 3-2-1 record at
Martin Stadium.
PC left the Division II level with six Southern
Atlantic Conference championships and two
SAC tournament titles and made five trips to
the NCAA Division II tournament (1994, ’95,
’97, ’99, and ’03). Purcell’s 81 conference wins
make him the SAC’s all-time leader. He also
ranks sixth all-time in Division II with 207 career
wins.
Under Purcell’s guidance, the Blue Hose had
their best year in the history of the program in
1999. The 15-2-1 squad spent a week at No.
1 on the NSCAA/adidas rankings and finished
eighth in the Coaches Poll. PC captured its sixth
SAC title and hosted a first-round match of the
Division II national tournament against Belmont
Abbey. Purcell was recognized as the NSCAA/
adidas Southeast Region Coach of the Year and
SAC Coach of the Year for his success with the
team.
Purcell is a seven-time SAC Coach of the Year
winner and earned National NSCAA Coach of
the Year accolades in 1994 after leading the
Head Coach // 22nd Season
Blue Hose to a 15-3 record.
Before accepting the position as head coach
of the women’s team, Purcell spent one year
as an assistant coach with PC’s men’s squad.
He holds a USSF “B” coaching license and is
a member of the USYSA Region III Olympic
Development staff. Purcell also serves as codirector
of the Presbyterian College soccer
camps in the summer.
The Decatur, Ga. native graduated from
Presbyterian College in 1987 with a bachelor’s
degree in Education and Social Studies and
2009 Season review
Abby
Davis
Presbyterian College’s third season of transition to NCAA Division I play on
the soccer pitch was one of the toughest in the program’s 22 year history. The
2009 Blue Hose only scored 13 goals on the year en route to posting three wins
and a pair of draws.
The campaign began on August 28 with a trip to Furman’s historic Stone Stadium.
The Paladins sprinted out to a 4-0 lead after 54 minutes before the Blue
Hose could break into the scoring column. On 56 minutes, Kate Baker bested the
Furman goalkeeper from 23-yards. Two more Furman goals in the waning minutes
put the Paladins up 6-1 in the final minute. With just 19 seconds remaining in the
game, Emily Davis ripped a shot from 26-yards and into the net.
Three days later, PC hosted the College of Charleston Cougars for the home
opener for the Blue Hose. Charleston took an early lead in the 14th minute but
PC found the equalizer on 43 minutes with a gifted goal from the Cougars. Rachel
Lamb delivered a free kick into the box which was headed into the net by the
Cougar defense. The own goal would prove to be PC’s only gift of the season. The
teams remained level through most of the second half until Charleston scored the
game winner in the 80th minute to take the 2-1 win.
On September 4, the Blue Hose made the four hour trek south to face the
Mercer Bears. The Bears took a strangle hold on the game early with goals in the
8th, 14th and 23rd minute to go up 3-0 early. Britney Horton brought PC back
to two-goals down in the 25th minute. The PC defense held tough until Mercer
scored twice in short order in the 70th and 72nd minutes. Mercer took the 5-1 to
give the Blue Hose a 0-3 start.
Following the tough defeat at Mercer, PC returned home on Sept. 8 for a tilt
with in-state rival South Carolina State. PC took the lead in the fourth minute with
a goal off the boot of Tricia Bryan. The senior got free on a breakaway and buried
the shot from 12-yards. The Blue Hose went two goals up just after the ten minute
mark when Kate Baker scored her second goal of the year. Bryan’s cross came to
Baker who finished from 10-yards. The Bulldogs would score an 18th minute goal
before the game would be suspended for over two hours due to a thunderstorm at
31:32. The Blue Hose successfully defended the game playing the final 68 minutes
with ten players. A second red card would take PC to just nine in the final minute.
Despite the reduced strength, the PC defense held tough and earned its first win
of the year by a 2-1 margin.
Following its first win of the year, PC extended the winning streak to twogames
on Sept. 11 against The Citadel. The one goal of the match came in the 57th
minute when Emily Davis made a run through the Bulldog defense to ultimately
score the game winning foal from the edge of the six-yard box. Goalkeepers Abby
Young and Sara Beth Anderson would combine for the shutout with each netminder
working 45 minutes between the pipes.
The winning streak would come to an end two days later against Francis
Marion. The Patriots scored the 1-0 win with a goal on the stroke of the halftime
whistle. The Blue Hose outshot FMU in the game but could not score the much
needed goal to fall to 2-4 on the year.
On Sept. 17, I-26 rival Wofford came to Martin Stadium for an important
match. The teams were scoreless for the first 78 minutes but it was Morgan Fragapane’s
79th minute goal that gave the Blue Hose the 1-0 victory. Alice Blackwell
chipped in for the assist as Fragapane scored the goal from 26-yards off the crossbar.
For the second time on the season, Young and Anderson shared the shutout
as they each made three saves in the outing.
Three days later, PC traveled to face Clemson in a Sunday afternoon matinee
on a rainy afternoon. The Tigers scored in the 33rd and 90th minutes to go along
with a 50th minute PC own goal to take the 3-0 victory over the Blue Hose.
League play opened as the calendar switched to October on the road against
VMI. Two Keydet goals in the 80th and 85th minutes gave VMI the victory. Two
days later, the road trip continued as PC took on Radford. The Highlanders secured
victory late with an 85th minute game winning goal. The losses gave the Blue Hose
a 0-2 league play start and a 3-7 record overall.
The Blue Hose fell to 0-3 in league play on Oct. 10, falling 3-0 on the road at
UNC Asheville. Goals in the 30th, 38th and 85th minutes gave the Bulldogs the
victory, their first of the league season.
Six days later, PC earned its first result of the league season with a 2-2 draw
against Coastal Carolina. The Chanticleers scored in the 31st and 38th minutes
to take the 2-0 lead into the halftime interval. Katie Hunter opened her season
scoring account in the 56th minute when she got on the end of Stephanie Aaron’s
corner kick. The striker doubled her season tally in the 80th minute when she put
away a rebounded shot. Hunter’s brace, combined from stellar Blue Hose defense
down the stretch gave PC its first draw of the season.
On Oct. 18, PC continued its homestand with a meeting with Charleston
Southern. The Blue Hose opened the match with a pair of quick goals. Kate Baker
opened the scoring in the fifth minute when she finished Stephanie Aaron’s corner
kick. Tricia Bryan matched the feat in the 10th minute with another goal off
Aaron’s corner. The Bucs rallied with a goal in the 36th minute to cut the lead to
2-1. A goal just before the break leveled the teams at 2-2. CSU waited just 83
seconds after the intermission to take the 3-2 decision.
PC returned to the road on Oct. 23 against Gardner-Webb. Gardner-Webb
scored both of its goals in the 2-0 win in the first half. Two days later, PC visited
Winthrop for a Sunday afternoon against the Eagles. Winthrop earned the 3-0 win
as PC registered just four total shots with none on goal.
As the season’s final weekend began, PC too to the field against High Point.
The Panthers scored in the 62nd minute a goal which looked to be enough for the
win. Britney Horton spoiled the Panther party in the 88th minute with an equalizer
to force overtime. The teams were even through the first overtime period but
after just 3:21 in the second extra frame; High Point scored the winning goal.
The season finale was played on November 1st at home against the Liberty
Flames. PC’s defense played its strongest to close the year as the Blue Hose held
the regular season Big South Champions to a 0-0 draw. The combined clean sheet
was the third of the season for PC’s goalkeeping tandem as they combined for six
saves. Liberty outshot PC 24-14 with only a 6-5 advantage in shots on goal. The
result gave PC a 3-12-2 overall record and an 0-7-2 league mark.
Kate Baker won PC’s golden boot award with three goals on the season. She
was followed in the standings with Emily Davis, Katie Hunter, Tricia Bryan and Britney
Horton with two goals each. Top assist award went to Stephanie Aaron with
four assists on the year. In goal, Abby Young and Sara Beth Anderson split time
between the pipes. Young posted a 2.40 goals against average while Anderson
held opponents to a 1.58 GAA allowing just 12 goals in 15 games.
Gr i f f i t h
Dr. John V. Griffith, a 1969 graduate of
Dickinson College, begins his 12th year as
President of Presbyterian College. Griffith
became the 16th president of PC on
Jan. 1, 1998, replacing Dr. Kenneth B. Orr who retired after guiding the college
for 18 years. Griffith was inaugurated on Oct. 10, 1998, as part of Homecoming
festivities.
Griffith continues to guide Presbyterian College through the new strategic plan
which will take PC through the first decade of the 21st century. Griffith helped the
institution celebrate its 125th anniversary during the academic year in 2005-06.
Griffith came to PC after spending his previous 20 years of service at several
colleges in different capacities. He began his work at the college level in 1977,
when he was hired as a lecturer at the University of Syracuse. Prior to his time at
Syracuse, Griffith served as a chaplain at the Dana Hall School in Wellesley, Mass.,
from 1972-76 and as a minister at the Village Baptist Church in Sherbune, N.Y.,
from 1976-78. He served as a lecturer at Syracuse University for one year before
accepting a job at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, Mich., where he was
an associate director for Project Choice, a $150,000 project on student consumer
protection.
He moved on to Davidson College in Davidson, N.C., in 1979, where he was
hired as Dean of Admissions and Financial Aid and a member of the faculty. He
served in this capacity for the next six years before being named Vice President
for Institutional Advancement in 1985. During the next four years, Griffith helped
develop Project MATCH, a $150,000 project directed at intellectual development
College president // 13th Year
and college admissions. While at Davidson, he was also instrumental in the
development of Love of Learning, an intervention program directed at African-
American youth.
Griffith continued his work at Davidson College until 1989, when he was named
president of Arkansas College, a private liberal arts college in Batesville, Ark., which
later changed its name to Lyon College. He served as president of Lyon, a PCUSArelated
school, for eight years before coming to PC.
Throughout his career, Griffith has served on numerous committees and
councils, including the executive committee of the Association of Presbyterian
Colleges and Universities and the Governor’s Advisory Board of Technology and
Telecommunications for the State of Arkansas. He is an active board member of
the Laurens County Economic Development Corporation and was honored as its
2003 Man of the Year. He is an honorary board member of the Upstate Alliance,
and a gubernatorial appointment to the South Carolina Commission on Higher
Education. He also serves on the board of directors for the National Association of
Independent Colleges and Universities.
Griffith graduated cum laude from Dickinson College in 1969 with a bachelor’s
degree in Religion, receiving the Hoffstatder Award as the most outstanding
senior. He later graduated magna cum laude from Harvard University in 1972
with a Master’s of Divinity degree, being named valedictorian and baccalaureate
speaker of his class. Griffith received his Ph.D. degree in Intellectual Development
from the University of Syracuse in 1980.
He and his wife, the former Nancy Shell, are the parents of two sons: Matthew,
a graduate of Davidson College, and Chris, a graduate of Dickinson College.
WHAT IS A BLUE HOSE?
“A Blue Hose is a fierce Scotch-Irish warrior. If you have ever seen the movie Braveheart, you have seen a true Blue Hose.”
Despite this depiction, it still has been asked many times where Presbyterian College received its Blue Hose nickname. Several rumors exist and
Ray Frank in his book, “What’s In A Nickname” delved into the subject. Frank discovered that there were many opinions. One story had it that the
Presbyterian Scotch-Irish wore blue stockings in the Puritan beginnings of our country. Another said that a fierce war-like band of Scotch-Irish named
the Hose painted their entire bodies blue before going into battle. Yet, probably the true story lies in a letter dated June 15, 1935, written by then PC
athletic director Walter Johnson to an inquiring English professor in Virginia ... (quoting from Walter Johnson’s letter) ‘It was about the second or third
year, 1915, if I remember right. I think it happened this way: I changed uniform colors to blue, wearing blue stockings and jerseys, and some sports
writer started calling in his articles the Presbyterian College teams the Blue Stockings.” ... in later years “Stocking” became abbreviated to “the Hose,”
particularly in newspaper headlines, and was more or less officially adopted by the student body in the 1950’s.
All the PC media guides since 1996 continued to elaborate on the issue, quoting an article by Ben Hay Hammet entitled “The Spirt of PC.” The piece
by Hammet articulated that, “Johnson always insisted on the fact that his players wear long blue socks similar to stockings (after all, there were White
Sox and Red Sox in baseball).
Coach Johnson’s explanation may simply be coincidental to the fact that the phrase “Blue Stocking Presbyterian” goes back informally quite a few
years in the denomination’s history.” Nevertheless, PC’s athletic nickname was shortened to Blue Hose in 1954.
part of his job, Reese said he felt attuned to how special a place PC is.
“Presbyterian College has a great tradition of putting academics first for
student-athletes,” he said. “When the job opened, I went after it knowing this
was a good environment to live and work in. After meeting people here - the
coaches, student-athletes, faculty, and the community - I knew this is where I
wanted to be. There is so much potential here for us to have great success in
Division I and doing it with honor. I’m grateful and humbled to be selected.”
NCAA Compliance
“Representatives of athletics interests” are all alumni and friends of Presbyterian
College athletics programs; you are bound under the same rules and regulations as
the athletes, coaches, and staff. This contains a brief overview, if future questions/
situations arise please be sure to, “ask before you act” because consequences of
NCAA violations include:
• Enrolled student-athletes declared ineligible
• Eligibility of prospective student-athletes jeopardized
• NCAA regulations and sanctions placed on the college and athletic
department
• Athletics representatives forced to disassociate from the college and/or loss of
ticket privileges
What is a Representative of Athletics Interests (Booster/Donor)?
All alumni, friends, and employees of the College are categorized as
‘representatives of athletics interest.’ The NCAA stipulates that once an individual has
been identified as a ‘representative’ or “booster/donor” he/she retains this status
forever even if the individual is no longer associated with the athletics program.
Furthermore the NCAA states that it is possible for a person to be a representative
of more than one institution at the same time.
A representative of athletics interest is anyone who has ever:
• Made any type of contribution to the athletics department or to a booster
club,
• Joined the institution’s booster club or any sport specific group,
• Provided or helped arrange employment for a student-athlete,
• Provided benefits to enrolled student-athletes or their families,
• Assisted in any manner in the recruitment of prospective student-athletes,
• Promoted the institution’s athletics programs in any manner.
As a representative of athletics interest you may not:
• Contact a prospect’s coach, principal or counselor in an effort to evaluate a
prospect,
• Visit the prospect’s institution to pick up film or transcripts,
• Contact a prospect, his/her parents, legal guardians, or spouse on or off
campus,
• Contact a prospect by telephone or letter,
• Make special arrangements to entertain a recruit,
• Provide extra benefits to a prospect, student-athlete, or the parents, family
and/or guardians of the prospects or student-athletes.
Who is a Prospective Student-Athlete?
A prospective student-athlete is a person who has started ninth (9th) grade,
regardless of his/her athletic ability and/or participation. Please remember that a
prospective student-athlete remains a prospect even after signing a National Letter of
Intent (NLI) or accepts an offer of financial aid from the institution. A person remains
a prospect until he/she reports for the first day of classes for a regular (Fall/Spring)
term.
What is an “Extra Benefit?”
Any special arrangement by an institutional employee or a representative of
the institution’s athletics programs to provide a student-athlete (or relative/friend)
a benefit that is not generally available to other Presbyterian College students.
Please take special consideration of the following:
Presbyterian college women’s soccer
Illegal Benefits:
-Providing cash or other tangible items (e.g. clothes, cars, shoes) to a prospect
prices.
-Providing the use of a car (including official visits to student hosts) or any free
or reduced cost services to a prospect/student-athlete or his/her family or friends.
-Providing a loan, co-signing a loan or guaranteeing a bond for a prospect/student
athlete.
-Providing tickets to an athletic event (institutional or community), or free
admission to an institution’s away from home contest for a prospect/student-athlete
or his/her family or friends.
-Promising employment after graduation or promising financial aid for post
graduate education.
-Paying or arranging for the payment of transportation costs incurred by a
prospect/student-athlete’s family or friends to visit the campus or elsewhere.
-Entertaining relatives or friends or a prospect/student athlete including at your
-Employing relatives or friends of prospects as an inducement for enrollment.
-Buying Christmas, birthday gifts or any gifts or awards for athletic
performance.
-Providing an honorarium to a student-athlete for a speaking engagement. (Only
necessary travel expenses may be provided and this must be approved by the athletic
department prior to the speaking engagement.)
• A student-athlete cannot accept anything from an employee or booster (i.e.-use
of car, hair cut, clothing, gifts, money, tickets, payment of long distance calls.)
• Free/reduced cost of room and/or board cannot be provided. This includes on
or off campus and at any location or time of year.
• Storage Room cannot be provided.
• Use of copy machine, fax machine, or other department equipment may not
be provided.
• A student-athlete cannot eat at a restaurant as a special guest of
an employee or athletics booster. However, on infrequent, special occasions a
student-athlete/team may accept an invitation to the home (never a restaurant) of
an employee or booster for a meal.
• Only reasonable (i.e.-within a 30 mile radius) and occasional local transportation
may be provided.
Penalties
-Violations of recruiting rules or the provisions of extra benefits will result in
the ineligibility of involved prospect/student-athlete at PC. In addition, multiple
violations can jeopardize an entire program. Provisions of extra benefits can result
in the institution being placed on probation, forfeiture of games, revenues and
championships.
-Remember WHEN IN DOUBT, FIND OUT! You may jeopardize the career of a
young person and the reputation of PC.
-The support and encouragement from athletic representatives (boosters) is
appreciated by the athletic department. However, under NCAA rules there are strict
limits on how you support an institution. When a violation occurs, intentional or
unintentional, the school is responsible for your actions.
Further, if a prospective or enrolled student-athlete accepts any benefit because
of his/her athletic ability, a student-athlete may lose all eligibility to participate in
intercollegiate athletics.
Permissible Benefits:
-Have student-athletes attend a charity event in which you are involved. NOTE:
Please contact the institution’s athletic compliance department.
-Provide summer employment to a student-athlete, provided compensation is
only for work actually performed and at a rate commensurate with the going rate
in the locale for similar services performed.
-Inviting a team for dinner or to meet with a group of alumni in a city where
they are playing. NOTE: Please contact the institution’s athletic compliance
department.
-A booster club, civic organization or alumni group of which you are a member
may award a scholarship to a prospect. NOTE: Some restrictions apply – Please
contact the institution’s athletic compliance department.
The importance of following all NCAA rules and regulations is imperative to
maintaining the integrity of Presbyterian College and intercollegiate athletics. We
ask all who are associated with the institutions athletics programs to help the College
Athletics Facilities
The Presbyterian College Athletics Department is recognized as having some of the finest athletic facilities in the Southeast. The 16-sport athletic department’s
facilities include the 2,300-seat Ross E. Templeton Physical Education Center, Callaway Tennis Courts, Edens Field at Martin Stadium, the PC Baseball Complex
and the PC Softball Complex.
Ross E. Templeton Physical Education Center
The facility bears the name of the late Ross E. Templeton ‘24, distinguished
alumnus and business leader of Charlotte and Clinton, who was a life-long
devotee of PC sports. Completed in 1975, the facility serves as both a sports
and academic center. The Furman Pinson Arena seats more than 2,000
spectators for men’s and women’s basketball as well as volleyball. In 2000, Mr.
and Mrs. Robert Staton provided a new floor for the facility. Ample classrooms,
multi-purpose space and equipment serve the physical education instruction
program. Adjoining Templeton Center is the new Johnson-Callaway Center, an
11,500-square foot addition containing men’s and women’s locker rooms and
10 coaches’ offices. Located directly behind this facility is the Kemper D. Lake,
M.D. Sports Medicine Center which houses PC’s Sports Medicine staff who
maintain the health of all Blue Hose athletes. The Mabry-Smith-Yonce Center
is the 6,000-square foot facility adjoining the Templeton Center that was built
in 1994. This facility provides meeting space for student organizations, alumni
groups, athletic teams and special events.
Templeton Weight Facility
Located in the Templeton Center, the new weight room which opened in
October of 2004, replaced the facility’s racquetball court that was no longer
in service. The 38’x70’ addition provides an additional 2,660-square feet
of weightlifting area for the school’s 16 varsity athletic teams. The original
weight room provides 2,400-square feet of workout space that will give the
Blue hose athletic teams the flexibility to work out in both weight room
facilities while avoiding scheduling conflicts. The new weight room includes
custom equipment designed and installed by ArrowHawk of Laurens, S.C.
Templeton Tennis Center
Located next to the Ross E. Templeton Center, the Templeton Tennis Center
is home for the Blue Hose men’s and women’s tennis programs. Templeton
Courts has served as host for several regular season and postseason events,
including hosting the SAC Tennis Championships from 2002-2004.
Martin Stadium
Martin Soccer Stadium, seating approximately 400, was constructed in
2000 by the Kenneth Martin family of Greenville, S.C. Dr. Robert M. Edens
‘77, of Columbia, S.C., provided the soccer playing field. The facility is home
for the Blue Hose men’s and women’s soccer programs, which have received
national recognition over the years. This facility has also served as host of
several postseason events at the high school and collegiate level.
PC Softball Complex
The PC Softball Complex is located on the 31-acre Young Intramural Park.
This facility is home to the Blue Hose Softball program and was built in 1997,
when the sport was still at club level.
The facility has a new scoreboard located behind the right field fence,
which was donated by Pepsi-Cola of Greenville, S.C., prior to the 2005
season. Behind the scoreboard are batting cages, while the complex also
has three other softball fields which can be used for practice or tournament
competition.
The complex has served host to many tournaments, including the Food
Lion/SAC Tournament from 2001-2003 and again in 2007.
Johnson Field at Old Bailey Stadium
Johnson Field was named for Walter A. Johnson, who came to Presbyterian
College in 1915 when he was 22 and served as coach and athletic director for
43 years.
President John McSween dedicated Bailey Stadium at the opening home
football game of the 1928 season. The 3,000 seat facility, which is now used
as the home site by the Blue Hose men’s and women’s lacrosse teams, resulted
mainly from a $10,000 gift from W.J. Bailey, Clinton banker and industrialist,
as a memorial to his son William Cyrus Bailey, 1908. The Bailey Foundation
provided for the renovation of the track and stadium in 1986. The facility
served as the home field for the Blue Hose football program from its opening
prior to the 1928 season until the first two games of the 2002 season. During
that time, the Blue Hose compiled a record of 185-109-8, good for a .626 winning
percentage.
PC Baseball Complex
The Presbyterian College baseball team plays its home games at one of
the most attractive facilities in South Carolina, the PC Baseball Complex. The
Complex is located at the eastern end of the college campus and was built in
the late 1980’s. The facility has served as host to numerous postseason events
at the collegiate and high school level over the years.
The complex boasts a covered batting facility down the first base line and a
10-inning scoreboard located behind the left field fence.
Bailey Memorial Stadium
During the 2002 season, Presbyterian College opened the
new 6,500-seat Bailey Memorial Stadium. This state-of-theart
facility features a multi-level press box, a spacious field
house and concession stands for home and visiting fans.
Guarding the entrance to Bailey Memorial Stadium is a 15-
foot statue, which was graciously donated by Mr. Irwin Belk,
of the Blue Hose mascot, nicknamed Cyrus. Scotsman Club
members will have the opportunity to watch exciting Blue
Hose football from the loggia level, which has open access to
the home stands and a superb view of the playing field.
The second story of the press box is the president’s level.
Special guests will enjoy Blue Hose football from the plush
surroundings of the private president’s box. Also located on
this level is the game operations box, home and visiting radio
booths which are located on each end of this level and the
sports information box. The top level of the press box is the
film level, which offers coaches’ boxes and a filming area for
both teams. The playing surface, Claude Crocker Field, is made
of bermuda grass. Located at the west end of Crocker Field is
the Yonce Field house. The 9,000-square foot facility houses
both home and visiting football teams with locker room
facilities. A doctor’s office and sports medicine taping room
are also located in the field house.
Presbyterian college women’s soccer
Since its founding in 1983, the Big South Conference has matured
into a competitive leader in college athletics, actively pursuing excellence
on the field of play and in the classroom. The League’s growing
presence as an NCAA Division I athletic conference is evident by athletic
accomplishments on the national stage, innovative marketing and
media partnerships, increased television packages, and quality athletic
competition while intentionally fostering the academic, personal, social,
athletic and leadership development of each student-athlete. This has
evolved into the Conference’s mission of “Developing Leaders Through
Athletics.”
The Big South Conference was formed on August 21, 1983, when
Charleston Southern (then Baptist College) Athletic Director Howard
Bagwell and Augusta President George Christenberry began recruiting
members into the Big South, receiving initial commitments from Augusta,
Charleston Southern, Campbell, Coastal Carolina and Winthrop. One
month later, Dr. Edward M. Singleton was selected as the League’s first
Commissioner and continued to solicit new members. His efforts led to
the additions of Armstrong State, Radford and UNC Asheville, giving the
Big South more than the required six members to constitute an official
conference. The Big South’s first year of competition was in the Fall of
1984, and in September 1986, the Big South Conference was granted fullfledged
NCAA Division I status.
During its infancy and prior to securing automatic bids to NCAA
Championships, the Big South made early strides in earning at-large
berths in several national postseason events, including volleyball,
women’s basketball and women’s golf. In 1989, George F. “Buddy”
Sasser replaced the retiring Dr. Singleton as Commissioner, and in 1990,
the League received its first automatic bid – receiving an automatic
qualifier to the NCAA Baseball Championship. Under Sasser’s seven
years of leadership, the Conference implemented its public relations
and compliance programs, and introduced its first-ever men’s basketball
television package, featuring the Big South competing among some of
the finest teams in the nation.
In August 1996, Kyle B. Kallander replaced Sasser as the League’s third
Commissioner, and in his 13 years at the helm of the Big South, Kallander
has been instrumental in aggressively promoting the Conference to new
levels. The Conference has enjoyed record levels in marketing revenue
during the past several years, he has brought television coverage to
Big South women’s basketball, baseball and softball for the first time
in Conference history, as well as increased national television exposure
to the League as a whole through aggressive and unique television
packages.
Under Kallander’s leadership, the Big South developed and initiated
its first long-range strategic plan, re-affirming the League’s vision as a
Big South Conference
distinctive athletic Conference committed to the quality of institutional
life through athletic competition. He also spearheaded the efforts to add
football as a championship sport, which came to fruition in 2002, and
has solidified Conference membership with the additions of High Point,
Gardner-Webb and Presbyterian, and in 2011-12, the return of charter
member Campbell University. Kallander’s long range vision has also
included technological advancements, as the Conference introduced its
first live event video streaming in 2005 and has since expanded its video
offerings to more than 600 events annually through a partnership with
the member institutions, as well as the creation of several online and
social media platforms.
In the last 15 years alone, the Big South Conference has experienced
monumental growth and success in nearly every sport. During this time,
the Conference has had two individual National Champions, more than
200 All-Americans, has reached the “Sweet 16” in men’s soccer, women’s
basketball and baseball, has received national Top 25 rankings in men’s
soccer, men’s basketball, women’s basketball, baseball, men’s outdoor
track & field, and men’s golf, had an individual selected to play in the
NCAA Singles Championship four times in addition to the first men’s
tennis doubles at-large selection, had the No. 1 ranked men’s golfer in
the country, has had the nation’s top scoring men’s basketball team three
consecutive years as well as the national men’s basketball scoring leader
twice, received an at-large playoff berth in the Football Championship
Subdivision in 2006, and had an institution finish fifth in the NCAA Men’s
Golf Championships – the Conference’s highest-ever team finish in an
NCAA event.
In 2006-07 alone, the Big South was the only Conference nationwide
to have an at-large participant in the football playoffs (Coastal Carolina),
a team in the Second Round of the NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament
(Winthrop) and a No. 1 seed in the NCAA Baseball Regionals (Coastal
Carolina). In fact, Coastal Carolina’s baseball program has been a No. 1
seed three out of the last five years, while its FCS playoff berth in 2006
came in just the fifth-year of the Big South’s football existence.
The Conference’s tagline, “Developing Leaders Through Athletics”
was unveiled in 2008-09 in conjunction with the Conference’s 25th
Anniversary. The League also honored its heritage with the Top 25 “Best
of the Best” moments in League history from 1983-2008, with Liberty
University’s 10-year women’s basketball championship run from 1996-
2007 being crowned the No. 1 moment in the Big South’s first 25 years.
The Conference’s on-field accomplishments have been duplicated in the
classroom. Annually, more than 40 percent of Conference student-athletes
are named to the Big South’s Presidential Honor Roll for maintaining a
cumulative 3.0 grade-point average, and the League has had more than
95 Academic All-Americans in its quarter-century of existence.
fall of 2000.
Martin Stadium is one of the finest facilities in the South as it showcases
a permanent stadium seating facility encased in brick, including 400
chairback seats.
Edens Field is a 120 by 75 yard playing field with 419 Tif Bermuda
The facility opened in the fall of 2000 with the Blue Hose men’s soccer
team winning its inaugural match, 3-0, over Catawba College on Oct. 21,
2000. Martin Stadium was dedicated between the men’s and women’s
soccer matches on Saturday, Sept. 29, 2001.
Martin Stadium was named for benefactors Ken and Kay Martin
of Greenville, S.C. Their sons, Michael, a ‘93 graduate and Mark, a ’96
graduate, both played soccer at PC. Edens Field is named for Bob Edens of
Columbia, S.C., a 1977 graduate who was a member of
the very first Blue Hose soccer team. Among the other
benefactors to the new soccer complex include David
Welborn of Spartanburg, S.C., a 1966 graduate whose
son, Will ’91, and daughter, Elizabeth ’96, were varsity
soccer players and PC students and Michael and Karen
Warren of Atlanta, Ga., whose son, Sean, was a former
member of the men’s soccer program.
The 2007 Blue Hose were 3-2-1 inside their home
stadium. PC was 2-1-1 against Big South competition
at Martin Stadium in 2007, defeating Radford and Big
South Conference Tournament champion High Point.
In 2008, PC notched a 3-2-1 mark at home, including
a 2-1-1 record against conference competition. The
squad downed VMI and Charleston Southern to close
We Are Presbyterian College
Presbyterian College is located in Clinton, South Carolina, a community
of 10,000 nestled in upstate South Carolina. The college’s beautiful 240-acre
campus and a national reputation for academic excellence attract 1,200
students representing 30 states and eleven foreign countries. International
study programs include China, Oxford, Spain, and Cuba. The distinguished
sons and daughters of Presbyterian College are outstanding leaders in
business and industry, education, athletics, journalism, medicine, the military,
the Church, and public service. Presbyterian College, home of the fighting
Blue Hose, continues to live its motto of “While we live, we serve,” producing
servant leaders for the world today.
PC was born of the dreams of a humble pastor determined to restore a
territory plundered by war. In 1864 22-year-old Rev. William Plumer Jacobs
arrived in Clinton to serve as pastor of First Presbyterian Church. Eight years
later Jacobs and the church founded the Clinton High School Association to
provide the young people of Laurens County a place to receive a Christianbased,
liberal arts education. In 1880 the Clinton High School Association
became first Clinton College, and then in 1890 the Presbyterian College of
South Carolina.
Coeducational instruction occurred from the start. In keeping with its
goal to produce graduates of high moral character, Presbyterian College
adopted an honor code, a student-run system still flourishing today, to
govern students’ academic and social lives.
Today’s PC curriculum includes international programs, internships, and
unique cultural and arts opportunities. New facilities for living (Senior Hall
and Carol International House), athletic play (new Bailey Memorial Stadium,
Martin Soccer Stadium), study (Lassiter Science Hall, the Arnold Archives and
Thomason Library), and infrastructure support (information technology)
benefit the PC and Clinton community alike.
New professorships have strengthened the already strong faculty. The
college is home to six South Carolina Professors of the Year, more than
twice the number of any public or private institution in the state. Financial
aid resources insure that qualified students have access to a PC education.
Blue Hose sports have always made history. In 1943 PC football coach
Lonnie McMillan gave the Clemson football stadium its famous nickname,
Death Valley. The Scotsman Club, formerly known as the Walter Johnson
Club, was created in 1937. Its purpose still today is to provide athletic
scholarships for young men and women who excel in both sports venues
and classrooms. In the 1960s PC’s intercollegiate tennis program was ranked
number 2 in the nation.
PC provides the community a rich cultural life through lectures, art
exhibits, concerts and theatrical performances. The college’s library and
intramural facilities serve local residents, while college faculty and staff
serve on many local boards. The college is involved in local economic
development, recognizing the importance of its roll as a Clinton citizen and
significant employer.
Presbyterian College holds fast to its core mission and high standards of
integrity, celebrating its motto: “Dum Vivimus Servimus,” or “While we live,
we serve.” Service to community and each other are hallmarks of faculty and
students alike, and PC has one of the oldest student volunteer organizations
in the country in Student Volunteer Services (SVS). Presbyterian College is
also proud of its service to country. More than 1,000 PC graduates served in
World War II, and today’s alumni ranks include a Medal of Honor recipient
and more than 15 generals.
In 2007, after 15 years in NCAA Division II, the college entered its first
transitional year of membership into NCAA Division I. Today PC fields sixteen
competitive teams in men’s and women’s sports and is in its third transitional
season. PC is a member of the Big South Conference.
