Taking a Peak at Presbyterian
The Blue Hose enter the contest riding a four-game winning streak, including backto-back
wins against Big South Conference members VMI and Coastal Carolina. Last
weekend, Presbyterian overcame a 24-point deficit to defeat Coastal Carolina in overtime,
41-34, upping its record to 5-3 on the year.
Presbyterian has begun its transition to full-time NCAA FCS Division I membership
this year and be a full-fledged Big South Conference member, starting in 2011.
The Blue Hose boast the most potent passing attack at the FCS level this year. If
they were eligible for national rankings, Presbyterian would lead the nation in passing
yards (Brown currently does, averaging 344.2 yards passing per game).
Presbyterian is averaging 354.9 passing yards per game, to go along with 25 touchdown
passes. Quarterback Tim Webb has passed for 1,761 yards and 15 touchdowns,
with the junior completing 70.1 percent of his pass attempts (122-of-174). Back-up signal
caller Grayson Mullins has thrown for 980 yards and nine scores.
Ten different receivers have pulled in touchdown passes, led by Terrance Butler.
The junior sits atop the team's receiving list, having collected 762 receiving yards and
six touchdowns. When the Blue Hose decided to go to the ground game, S.J. Worrell is
the athlete they look to. The running back leads the squad, with 527 rushing yards and
five touchdowns over the first eight games of the season.
Linebacker Chris Bowman leads the Blue Hose's defensive efforts, having tallied 54
tackles, including five for loss and three pass break ups. He is followed by free safety
Caleb Massengill, who has 52 tackles to his credit, including a team-best 25 solo stops.
Fancy New Field For The Flames
During the summer of 2006, the Liberty University Athletics Department made a
concerted effort to upgrade several athletics facilities, including a new playing surface
at Williams Stadium. State-of-the-art FieldTurf was installed at Williams Stadium, replacing
the old AstroTurf which had been used since the opening of the facility in 1989.
FieldTurf is the latest innovation in artificial playing surfaces and is the surface of
choice for 24 NFL stadiums, including Ford Field, where Super Bowl XL was played, and
at over 40 NCAA stadiums across the country.
Tracking the 100-Career Tackle Club
The Flames entered the 2007 season with two defensive members of the squad
having cracked the 100-career tackle club. Seniors Steven Ackley and Brandon Duke
each have tallied more than 100-career stops, led by Duke's 135 tackles, followed by
Ackley’s 122 tackles.
Liberty lost a key defender last year when Manny Rojas graduated from the program.
The four-year standout finished his career with 348 tackles, which ranks second
best all-time in the Big South Conference.
Looking to fill the shoes vacated by Rojas is junior Nick Hursky, who joined Ackley
and Duke as a member of the 100-tackle club against Tusculum on Sept. 3. The linebacker
tallied a team-best 12 tackles, the second-highest single-game mark of his
career in the contest, pushing him over the century total for his career.
Since the season-opener, Liberty has had four defenders join the club. Against
Shippensburg, Stevie Ray Lloyd pushed his career total over the century mark, followed
by Patrick Calvary against William & Mary on Sept. 15.
The next two defenders to join the club were defensive backfield teammates. Both
Pat Dickerson and Ryan Greiser moved over the 100-career tackle mark against Toledo.
2007 FLAMES FOOTBALL GAME NOTES
Moving Over the Million Fan Mark
Last year's Western Carolina game on Nov. 4, 2006, marked a historic day in the
annals of Liberty University. The 8,286 fans in attendance helped the Flames move over
the 1,000,000 mark in home attendance since the program's inception in 1973.
Noting Last Year’s Attendance Numbers
Liberty recorded a school and Big South Conference mark for home attendance on
Oct. 14, 2006, as 15,631 fans saw the Flames' Homecoming game against William &
Mary. The following week, Liberty had 12,056 fans attend the Flames' conference opener
against Gardner-Webb, marking the sixth-highest attendence in school history and
the third most in league history.
Liberty's previous school record for highest home attendance was 12,623 against
Charleston Southern (Oct. 3, 1998) and the previous conference high was the 12,273
fans who saw Liberty's come-from-behind victory over VMI (Oct. 4, 2003).
Liberty now holds nine of the Top 10 single-game attendance figures in Big South
Conference history, including the top eight tallies.
Last Year’s Attendance Ranks Among Nation's Best
Liberty's attendance numbers last year not only ranked among the best in program
history, but the figures were some of the best in the country.
The Flames ranked No. 13 nationally by filling Williams Stadium to a 92.73 capacity
average per home game. Liberty also ranked No. 17 in the country in total home
attendance (66,765) and No. 27 in average home attendance per game (11,128).
WOW - What Wonderful Crowds
The excitement of a new brand of Flames football quickly grew during the 2006 season.
Evidence of the excitement was repeatedly seen in last year's attendance figures,
as three of Liberty's six home games ranked in the Top 15 in the school's attendance
annals. On Oct. 14, the Flames set a Liberty and Big South record, as 15,631 fans saw
the Flames battle in-state opponent William & Mary in the school's annual Homecoming
game.
Larger home crowds have proven to be an advantage for the Flames, as Liberty has
posted a 15-9 record in Williams Stadium home games where 10,000 or more fans have
attended.
During the Flames’ 2007 home opener against Tusculum, Liberty packed 14,925
fans into Williams Stadium, the second-largest home crowd in program history, followed
by the seventh-largest crowd with 12,331 fans to see the Shippensburg game. Last
weekend, Liberty packed 13,893 fans in at home, ranking third in school history.
Running With the Flames
Liberty's 115 rushing yards against VMI in its season finale last Nov. 18 not only
helped Liberty complete a nationally-renowned turnabout. The century-plus yardage
total pushed Liberty over the 2,000-yard season mark for the fifth time in program history.
The Flames finished the year with 2,035 rushing yards, ranking No. 19 nationally
by averaging 185.0 yards per game. This marked the fifth-best team rushing performance
in program history and the fourth time in the last five years Liberty has eclipsed
the 2,000-yard mark on the ground. This season, Liberty has rushed for more than a
100 yards during six out of the first seven contests of the year. The Flames ranked No.
22 in the county in average rushing yards per game (202.1).
The Coaches
Liberty is under the direction of head coach Danny Rocco, who is 10-8 in his second
year at the helm of the Flames football program. Last season, the second-year skipper
was duly rewarded for posting the nation's No. 1 turnaround from the previous season,
as he was named 2006 Big South Coach of the Year.
Bobby Bentley is in his first year as a collegiate head coach, having guided the Blue
Hose to a 5-3 mark during his inaugural campaign. Prior to his arrival in Clinton, S.C.,
Bentley served as the head coach at James F. Byrnes High School, where he compiled
a 107-52 record over 12 years. At Byrnes, he tied a South Carolina record by winning
four-consecutive Class AAAA Division II state football championships (2002-05).
Five to Guide the Way
On April 21, 2007, midway through the Flames' annual spring game, Liberty took its
traditional halftime, where head coach Danny Rocco thanked the crowd for attending.
Rocco made several special presentations during the ceremonial break, including
naming his 2007 team captains. Offensively, he named quarterback Brock Smith (#13),
along with a pair of offensive linemen in Eddie Pinigis (#73) and Stephen Sene (#68).
On the defensive side of the ball, Rocco tabbed defensive end Steven Ackley (#45)
and linebacker Stevie Ray Lloyd (#11) as captains.
Smith and Hursky Share Gado Award Honors
During halftime of Liberty's annual spring game on April 21, 2007, head coach
Danny Rocco continued his annual tradition by announcing the winners of the Samkon
Gado Award.
The honor is bestowed yearly upon the athlete the coaching staff feels showed the
greatest improvement during spring practice. Last spring's award was shared by two
players, as quarterback Brock Smith and linebacker Nick Hursky were named the 2007
recipients. In 2006, fullback Chris Stokes became the award's first honoree.
New Schemes Succeed In 2006
For the first time in program history, the Flames ran a 3-4 defense last season,
which resulted in Liberty setting eight defensive school records, including fewest points
allowed (172). The Flames finished the year ranked No. 12 nationally in scoring
defense, allowing just 15.6 points per game.
On the other side of the ball, Liberty ran a two-back set, rushing for a combined
2,035 yards behind the tag-team efforts of Rashad Jennings (1,020 yards and 10 touchdowns)
and Zach Terrell (673 yards and 13 touchdowns).

Preseason Top Dog
For the first time in program history, Liberty's football team headed into the year as
the preseason favorite to win the Big South Conference title. The Flames were named
this year's preseason favorite at the annual Big South Football Kickoff Media Luncheon
in late July.
Liberty received 12 out of 20 first-place votes from a voting panel which included
members of the media, the league's head coaches and sports information directors. The
Flames are just the third team to be named preseason favorites in the six years the
league has sponsored the sport. Gardner-Webb was the conference's pick in 2002 and
2003, followed by Coastal Carolina's three-year run (2004-06) as the yearly preseason
favorite.
Record-Setting Season
During Liberty's first year under head coach Danny Rocco, the Flames rewrote the
program's record book, tying or breaking 12 single-season records. Offensively, Liberty
shattered three records, including those for fewest interceptions thrown (5), fewest fumbles
(10) and fewest fumbles lost (3), while also setting a school record with three kickoffs
returned for a touchdown.
Liberty did most of its damage to the record book on the defensive side of the field,
setting records for most shutouts (3), fewest points allowed (172), fewest rushing first
downs allowed (79), fewest rushing yards allowed (1,433), fewest averaged rushing
yards allowed per game (130.3), fewest rushing touchdowns allowed (12), fewest total
touchdowns allowed (21) and fewest total offensive yards allowed per game (306.6).
Flames on the Tube
The Liberty Flames football team will have seven of its 11 regular-season football
games televised this year, including all six home games. Also, the Big South EDGE will
cover six of Liberty's contests via the internet.
The Flames Sports Network (FSN) will broadcast the first five home games, marking
the continual expansion of the broadcast network. The final two television broadcasts
will be covered by the Mid-Atlantic Sports Network (MASN), which is set to cover
Liberty's key Big South match-ups with Coastal Carolina and Gardner-Webb.
Flame fans who do not live in the greater Lynchburg area can also follow Liberty
football action via the internet, as the Big South EDGE will be covering six of Liberty's
contests.
Liberty's first four home contests and their final home game against VMI will be covered
by the online video streaming service, as will the squad's Big South opener on the
road against Charleston Southern (Oct. 20).
Fans can purchase a football season pass for all Big South video streamed events
for $39.95 and a full fall sport season pass for $49.95 (includes football, volleyball and
men's and women's soccer contests). The conference's best deal is the EDGE's annual
subscription for $69.95, giving members access to all video-streamed events during
the 2007-08 athletic year.
Overtime Update
The Flames enter today's game having posted a 3-5 record in overtime games.
Liberty's last overtime game came on Sept. 15, when the Flames dropped a 48-41 decision
to William & Mary in double overtime in Williamsburg, Va.
Liberty has only played two of its eight overtime games away from Williams
Stadium. Liberty's first extra-period game was a 34-28 road lost to Morgan State on
Sept. 21, 1996. Liberty's last victory in an overtime contest came on Nov. 22, 2003,
when it closed out the 2003 campaign with a 49-42 win over Hofstra.
new game day tradition. Members of the University Police force raised a No. 71 flag
underneath the Liberty Flames flag above the South end zone, just prior to the team taking
the field, bringing the 14,925 fans in attendance to their feet.
The new tradition will become a permanent part of the Flames' pregame ceremonies
at all home football games. A different person will receive the honor of raising
the flag at each game. Today's honoree will be Andy Barrick, Liberty University's
Director of Alumni Affairs.
This year's honorees:
Sept. 1 (Tusculum) - Liberty University Police force
Sept. 8 (Shippensburg) - Dr. Elmer Towns, Liberty University co-founder
Sept. 29 (St. Francis) - Richard Osborne, President of LU's Parents' Foundation
Oct. 27 (Presbyterian) - Andy Barrick, LU's Director of Alumni Affairs
Passing on the Pick Off
The Flames set a new program record last year, when Liberty's quarterbacks threw
just five interceptions on the year. The previous-best mark was nine interceptions set in
1994, 1995 and 1999. Liberty finished the year tied for No. 6 nationally, with fellow conference
member VMI leading the nation with just three interceptions on the season.
This year, the Liberty defense seems to be focusing more on increasing its interception
total. Liberty currently leads the Big South and ranks No. 13 nationally with 13
interceptions over its first seven games. The Flames have evenly spread out their
picked-off passes with eighth different players recording an interception.
The Nation's Best
Liberty finished last season leading the nation in a pair of statistical categories.
Liberty's stout special teams unit made the Flames the lone program in the country to
return three kickoffs for a touchdown, setting a new program record (previous was two
in 1995).
Liberty also finished the year tied with San Diego for the nation's lead, as both programs
committed just eight turnovers. The Flames set a program record with five interceptions
and another school-best mark with only three fumbles lost (previous best was
six in 1993 and 1995). Finally, Liberty's 10 total fumbles tied a program record as Liberty
also committed just 10 fumbles in 1999.
Sensational Shutouts
Liberty's defensive effort sure brought a smile to the face of head coach Danny
Rocco last year, as the Flames posted a school-record three shutouts in 2006. Rocco,
a 20-plus year veteran of defensive coaching, posted shutouts over St. Paul's,
Savannah State and Western Carolina in his first year at the helm of the program.
Liberty's previous school record was two shutouts in 1979.
Points at a Premium
Liberty finished its 2006 campaign by besting a 20-plus year school record, as
Liberty allowed just 172 points during its nationally-recognized turnaround. The Flames
finished the year averaging 15.6 points per game allowed, ranking No. 12 in the country
in scoring defense. The previous school record for fewest points allowed was set in
1979, when Liberty allowed 176 points en route to a 9-1-1 record.
However, this year, Liberty's points per game average has nearly doubled. The
Flames have allowed 24.7 points per game over the first seven contests, which has
Liberty ranked No. 49 nationally in scoring defense.
Happy to Be Home
The Flames might feel like strangers in their own locker room this weekend, as
today's game brings to a close a lengthy road stretch. Over the past six weeks, the
Flames have hosted just one home game (St. Francis, Pa., on Sept. 29). During the
remainder of the time span, the team played four road games and had a week off.

Interview Policies
2007 FLAMES FOOTBALL GAME NOTES
Homecoming Happiness
Today's game will mark the 35th Homecoming football game in the history of the
program. Liberty has been very successful on the festive weekend, as the Flames enter
the contest having posted a 22-12 overall record in previous Homecoming games.
Plenty of Points
Liberty set a program record with its 50-10 victory over Charleston Southern, last
Saturday. The win marked the largest margin of victory over a Big South program in
school history. The previous mark was a 28-point win, 34-6, over Charleston Southern
on Oct. 24, 2004.
This year, Liberty has scored 30 or more points in six out of seven contests and has
done so, eight out of nine games dating back to last campaign. The Flames currently
lead the Big South and rank No. 7 nationally by averaging 40.0 points per game.
Big Time Big South Win
Liberty's 50-10 win over Charleston Southern last weekend was the fourth-largest
margin of victory in Big South Conference history. The three ranking higher than
Liberty's 40-point wins have all come against the Buccaneers.
Ground Game is Great
The Flames rushed for 283 yards against Charleston Southern last weekend, marking
Liberty's second-highest rushing total this year. To go along with the near 300-yard
performance, Liberty scored five rushing touchdowns, the team's most since the Flames
rushed for six touchdowns against Hofstra on Nov. 22, 2003. Liberty currently ranks No.
22 in the country, averaging 202.14 rushing yards per contest.
Tale of Two Seasons
Both teams today are winning with new ways this year. Last season, Liberty and
Presbyterian used their stifling defense to halt opponents, en route to victory.
Presbyterian allowed 233.5 yards per game and ranked No. 12 nationally (at the
Division II level) in scoring average. Liberty set numerous program records and ranked
No. 12 in the country by allowing an average of 15.6 points per game. This year, both
squads have reversed roles. Liberty ranks No. 7 in the country, averaging 40.0 points
per game. If Presbyterian was eligible for FCS rankings, the Blue Hose would be tied
for No. 9 nationally, as the squad is averaging 39.0 points per game.
Piling Up The Points
Liberty rolled up 68 points against St. Francis on Sept. 29, tying for the third-highest
single-game point total in program history. Liberty also scored 68 points in a 68-0
win over Newport News on Oct. 9, 1976. The only two other games in the 35-year history
of the program to surpass the St. Francis point total, where a 69-21 win over Norfolk
State on Nov. 8, 2003, and a 76-6 victory over West Virginia Tech on Sept. 2, 1995.
Racking Up Road Points
Liberty's 40-point win over Charleston Southern, 50-10, last weekend was the program's
second-highest margin of victory in a road game. On Sept. 20, 1975, Liberty
defeated Gallaudet on the road in Washington, D.C. (43-0).
The 50 points scored by Liberty was the second highest road total in school history,
ranking just behind Liberty's Oct. 17, 1998 contest against Delaware State, where the
Flames defeated the Hornets, 53-21, in Dover, Del.
Valuing Their Possessions
For the second-straight outing, the Flames finished a contest without turning the ball
over. Liberty's last turnover came against St. Francis, Pa. (Sept. 29) when Brock Smith
threw an interception midway through the third quarter. In total, Liberty has had three
games without committing a turnover (also against Shippensburg).

On Sept. 29, the Flames had 13,893 fans in attendance at Williams Stadium for
Liberty's 68-10 win over St. Francis, Pa. The attendance figure marked the fifth time a
Liberty crowd has exceeded the 12,000 mark since head coach Danny Rocco took over
the program (which includes nine total home games). Prior to Rocco's arrival, Liberty
had eight games with 12,000 or more fans in attendance since opening Williams
Grateful for Ground Game
Over its last three games, Liberty has averaged 281.0 rushing yards per contest,
helped by the Flames 283 yards against Charleston Southern last weekend. Liberty has
scored 11 touchdowns during the span. During the first four games of the year, Liberty
averaged 143.0 rushing yards per game and tallied eight rushing touchdowns.
Liberty currently ranks No. 22 nationally, averaging 202.1 rushing yards per game.
The Flames also are tied for No. 15 with 19 rushing touchdowns.
Insane Interceptions
For the second time this year, Liberty finished a game with four interceptions, as the
Flames picked off four passes last weekend against Charleston Southern. The Flames
also picked off four passes in their season opener against Tusculum.
Liberty currently leads the Big South Conference with 13 interceptions, with nine different
defenders picking off the passes. Patrick Calvary leads the team with four interceptions,
having tallied 100 interception return yards.
Living on the Plus Side
Liberty finished the Charleston Southern game with a +5.0 turnover ratio, their best
single-game turnover ratio of the season. Liberty intercepted four passes and recovered
a fumble, while not committing a turnover of their own.
Liberty currently leads the Big South and ranks No. 5 nationally with a +1.57
turnover margin. Last year, the Flames valued possession of the ball as well, finishing
the year tied for No. 20 in the country with a +0.55 turnover margin.
Keeping Up With the Clock
For just the second time this season, Liberty won the "Battle for the Clock", finishing
the Charleston Southern game with a 2:30 time of possession (TOP) advantage.
Liberty also gained a slight TOP edge (0:44) against St. Francis, Pa. The Flames currently
rank No. 111 (out of 116 FCS program) nationally with a 26:56 average time of
possession. Last year, the Flames finished the year ranked No. 18 in the nation in average
time of possession (31:44).
Flags Go Flying
If you were looking for a negative to dwell on in Liberty's dominating 50-10 win over
Charleston Southern, the only area you might be able to focus on was the Flames'
penalty total. Liberty finished the game with eight infractions, resulting in 86 penalty
yards. The flag total was the second highest this season, ranking just below Liberty's
nine penalties for 70 yards against Shippensburg. Liberty currently ranks No. 29 nationally
in fewest average penalties per game (5.57) and No. 34 in fewest average penalty
yards (48.57).
Getting Past the Line of Scrimmage
Liberty's offensive players have had a nose for the line of scrimmage. The Flames
rank No. 4 nationally in fewest average tackles for loss per game (3.57). The 26 tackles
for a loss have resulted in 79 lost yards, the third-fewest yards lost as a result of a TFL.

2007 FLAMES FOOTBALL GAME NOTES
Moving the Chains
The Flames posted their second-highest first down total of the season against
Charleston Southern on Saturday. Liberty racked up 25 first downs, ranking just behind
the team's best performance of 26 against St. Francis, Pa. Sixteen came by virtue of the
running game and nine as a result of passing plays. Liberty ranks third in the Big South
with 132 first downs, just three behind VMI's conference-best 135 first downs.
Liberty Doesn't Share Very Well
Liberty's football players all must have missed the day in kindergarten when the
teacher explained how to share, as the Flames just don't share the ball well at all.
Liberty is one of eight programs at the FCS level to have lost two fumbles, ranking the
Flames tied for No. 3 nationally in the statistical category. The only two teams to rank
higher than Liberty are Elon, who has committed one fumble lost, and national-leading
Albany, who has yet to lose a fumble.
Giving Them a New Set of Downs
Charleston Southern finished last weekend's contest converting on 2-of-12 thirddown
plays, setting a new season low for a Liberty opponent. Despite the stellar singlegame
defensive performance, Liberty still ranks No. 110 (out o 116 FCS programs) in
third-down percentage defense. Liberty's opponents are converting on 45.9 percent of
their third-down opportunities this year.
Scoring Machine
The Flames scored on nine out 12 drives against Charleston Southern, last weekend,
including their first three and last four drives of the contest. Over the last three
games, Liberty has scored on 23 out of 25 possessions, marking a 73.5 scoring percentage.
During the first four games of the year, Liberty scored on 16 out of 54 drives
(48.1 scoring percentage).
Winning Rocco Football Brings Them In
On Sept. 29, the Flames had 13,893 fans in attendance at Williams Stadium for
Liberty's 68-10 win over St. Francis, Pa. The attendance figure marked the fifth time a
Liberty crowd has exceeded the 12,000 mark since Rocco took over the program (which
includes nine total home games). Prior to Danny Rocco's arrival, Liberty had eight
games with 12,000 or more fans in attendance since opening Williams Stadium in 1989.
Back to the Blocking Game
For the third time this year, Liberty held an opponent under 100 team rushing yards,
when Charleston Southern finished with 67 yards on 26 carries. The figure was a dramatic
improvement over Liberty's previous outing, as Toledo rushed for 267 yards on
Oct. 6, the most rushing yards an opponent has racked up since 2005. Liberty currently
ranks No. 22 nationally in rushing defense, allowing 118.3 rushing yards per game.
Tantalizing Total Offensive Numbers
The Flames finished the St. Francis game on Sept. 29 with 591 total offensive yards,
a new season high. The Flames had the ball for 62 offensive plays, averaging 9.5 total
offensive yards per play. The figure marked the first time Liberty has surpassed the 500-
yard threshold since 2004, when Liberty finished with 511 yards in a 31-28 homecoming
come-back victory over VMI.
Powerful Punt Returns
Despite their second-lowest return total of the season against Charleston Southern,
the Flames still rank No. 7 nationally in average punt return yardage (14.6). Against the
Buccaneers, two punts were fielded, resulting in just six total return yards. The Flames
are tied with Southeastern Louisiana for the national lead. Both squads have returned
three punts for a touchdown.

2007 FLAMES FOOTBALL GAME NOTES
Keeping Their QB Clean
For the first time this season, Liberty's offensive line and outside blockers kept the
Flames quarterbacks from being sacked against Charleston Southern. The feat was
nothing new, as Liberty has been one of the best FCS programs in the country in preventing
sacks. The Flames rank No. 4 in the nation, allowing just 0.71 sacks per game
(five in seven games).
Under head coach Danny Rocco, the Flames have excelled at protecting their passer.
Liberty finished No. 9 nationally by allowing 11 sacks over 11 games during the 2006
campaign. In 18 games, Liberty has allowed an average of 0.88 sacks per game under
the second-year skipper.
Red Zone Review
The red zone has been good to Liberty this year. The Flames have tacked on points
89.5 percent (31-of-35) of the times they have been inside the opponent's 20-yard line.
Liberty has scored 21 touchdowns and added 10 field goals.
However, Liberty's opponents have also found the red zone to be beneficial. In 21
trips inside Liberty's 20-yard line, the Flames opponents have found the end zone 95.2
percent of the time (20-of-21), including 16 touchdowns.
Liberty finally stopped its first opponent inside the red zone against Charleston
Southern. Chuck Duffey picked off a pass in the end zone during the fourth quarter,
marking Liberty's first red zone stop of the season.
Break Up Breakdown
The Flames started to get back on track last weekend in regards to their pass break
up efforts. Liberty finished the Charleston Southern game with four pass break ups, with
four different defenders evenly distributing the pass break ups. In its previous game,
Liberty finished with a season-low two pass break ups against Toledo.
On the year, Liberty leads the Big South Conference with 28 pass break ups, with
Gardner-Webb ranking just behind the Flames with 26 pass disturbances.
Still Trying to Get to the Hurler
For the second-straight game, Liberty finished a contest without a quarterback
hurry. Against St. Francis, Liberty racked up 11 quarterback hurries in the game.
However, over the past two contests, the Flames' defensive unit hasn't been able to
record a quarterback hurry.
Despite the back-to-back blankings, Liberty still ranks second in the Big South with
20 quarterback hurries. Gardner-Webb leads the league with 25 hurries.
Pair Honored by League
For the second time this year, Rashad Jennings and Noah Greenbaum have been
named Big South Players of the Week on the same day, honoring the duo's contributions
to Liberty's 50-10 Big South win over Charleston Southern.
Jennings rushed for a game-high 131 yards on 20 carries and scored two touchdowns
in the win. He averaged 6.6 yards per rushing attempt, recorded his third-consecutive
100-yard rushing game and posted his second-straight multi-touchdown game.
Greenbaum tied a season-high with 14 points scored on Saturday. He knocked
down 5-of-6 PAT attempts and also connected on 3-of-4 field goal attempts, hitting from
20, 33 and 27 yards. His three field goals are a season high, and he scored 10 points
in a game for the third time this season.
Jennings and Greenbaum were also named Big South Players of the Week on Sept.
17, after the pair of gridiron battlers tallied impressive numbers in a double-overtime
contest at William & Mary.

2007 FLAMES FOOTBALL GAME NOTES
At a Dozen and Climbing
Zach Terrell scored two of Liberty's five rushing touchdowns against Charleston
Southern last Saturday, giving the junior his 12th-consecutive game with a rushing
touchdown. The streak dates back to last year's William & Mary game, a span in which
Terrell has racked up 16 rushing touchdowns. Over the past three years, Terrell has 22
career rushing touchdowns, tying for second all-time in Big South Conference history.
Rashad Keeps Racking Them Up
Rashad Jennings led the Flames against Charleston Southern, rushing for 131
yards and two touchdowns. The performance marked the fourth time this year Jennings
has surpassed the 100-yard threshold and ninth time in his career. The junior has now
rushed for 100 or more yards in nine out of 16 games since joining the Flames' roster
in 2006.
Jennings leads the Flames with 554 total rushing yards and seven touchdowns. In
just 16 career games, Jennings has already cracked the Big South's Top 10. He currently
ranks tied for No. 7 with 17 rushing touchdowns and No. 10 with 1,574 rushing
yards.
Jennings Could Join Liberty's Elite
With his 131 yards against Charleston Southern last week, Rashad Jennings picked
up his ninth-career 100-yard game. Jennings is now tied with Chip Smith for fourth place
on the Flames' career 100-yard games. Standing ahead of Jennings are Lawrence
Worthington (10), Stacy Nobles (17) and Dre Barnes (20), Liberty's all-time leading
rusher.
Wynton Still Having His Way
Wynton Jackson was held to a single punt return for six yards against Charleston
Southern on Saturday. This accounted for the fourth time this year the return specialist
has finished with single punt return totals in a game.
However, Liberty's opponents have figured out to punt away from the Big South preseason
all-conference honoree. Jackson currently ranks No. 4 nationally in punt returns,
averaging 15.1 yards per return. Jackson is the only player in the nation to have
returned two punts for a touchdown this year.
Hursky Back in Action
After sitting out two games with a knee injury, Nick Hursky returned to the Flames
starting line up against Charleston Southern. The junior linebacker finished the contest
with four tackles, two solo and two assisted stops.
On the year, Hursky ranks second on the team with 49 total tackles. Prior to the
injury, Hursky had posted double-figure tackle totals during the first four games of the
season.
Tim Tears Them Up
Tim Torrence led the Flames' defensive unit against Charleston Southern on
Saturday. The sophomore recorded a new career high, finishing the contest with seven
tackles, including three solo stops and a shared tackle for loss (one yard).
Torrence is just four tackles away from passing his freshman year total of 27 tackles.
However, Torrence will not be in the Flames' line up this weekend, as he will be
away from the program due to a personal issue.

Tusculum
vs.
Liberty
Sept. 1, 2007
Williams Stadium - Lynchburg, Va.
Touchdowns off a punt return and an interception helped Liberty overcome a sluggish
first quarter en route to a 38-14 season-opening victory over Tusculum.
With the victory, the Flames move to 1-0 on the year and push their record to 19-2
in home openers over the past 21 seasons.
The Flames wasted little time getting on the scoreboard, as Liberty capped off a
seven-play, 48-yard drive with a 37-yard field goal by Noah Greenbaum, staking Liberty
to a 3-0 lead, with 12:11 left in the first. Of the seven plays, Zach Terrell was handed the
ball four times for 14 yards, but the drive was highlighted by a 29-yard, out-of-bound
pass play from Brock Smith to Brandon Turner.
Liberty had a chance to push its margin to six points on the second-to-last play of
the first quarter, but Greenbaum’s 29-yard field goal was blocked by Adrian Samples,
leaving Liberty’s lead at three points to close out the quarter.
The Flames stopped Tusculum on the ensuing kickoff with a thee-and-out series,
but Wynton Jackson was hit by Chris Young, forcing the return specialist to cough up
the ball on the resulting punt. Young was quick enough to gather himself and collect the
football, giving the Pioneers a new set of downs at Liberty’s 32-yard line.
And the Pioneers made the most of the second chance, as seven plays later, Corey
Russell rushed up the middle for a touchdown with 10:42 left to play before halftime.
On the drive, Liberty had the Pioneers stopped at the five-yard line three plays
beforehand, but Liberty was whistled for a dead ball unsportsmanlike conduct penalty
to give Tusculum a new set of downs, which they took advantage.
Liberty quickly regained the momentum, as Smith drove the Flames down field on
the next drive. The quarterback completed 3-of-5 passes, including a 50-yarder to
Dominic Bolden, who was pushed out of bounds just shy of the goal line. The strike set
up a Terrell run up the middle of the line, allowing the Flames to regain the lead, 10-7,
at the 9:34.
After another three-and-out series, the Pioneers were again forced to punt. John
Gregory booted the ball to the Liberty 35-yard line, where it was fielded by Jackson. This
time, the senior cleanly fielded the ball, and after several key blocks down field, Jackson
found the end zone for the score, pushing Liberty’s lead to 17-7.
The Flames quickly added to its lead on the third play of Tusculum’s next drive.
Liberty newcomer Ryan Best picked off Russell’s pass over the middle, and returned it
17 yards for a touchdown at 7:16, giving the Flames a 24-7 halftime advantage.
The score remained the same until Liberty’s final drive of the third quarter. Sixstraight
rushing plays led to the Flames’ fourth touchdown of the evening, when Wes
Cheek cut left for a 10-yard touchdown bolt to push Liberty’s lead to 31-7 with 73 seconds
left in the period.
Both teams tacked on additional touchdowns in the fourth quarter with most of their
back-ups on the field.
Tusculum capped of its longest drive of the evening, when Russell found Ryan
Tallent open on a 10-yard sideline pass for a touchdown to complete a 13-play, 65-yard
drive with 10:29 left in the contest.
The Pioneers forced the Flames to punt on the ensuing drive, but Ian Childress
intercepted Russelll for the fourth time on the evening. The linebacker picked off the
pass at the Tusculum 18-yard line and returned it to the two.
Three plays later, Cheek bowled through the middle on a one-yard score with 6:16
remaining, providing Liberty with its final margin of victory.

Game 2
Shippensburg
vs.
Liberty
Sept. 8, 2007
Williams Stadium - Lynchburg, Va.
Wynton Jackson posted a career evening, finishing with three total touchdowns,
leading Liberty to a 35-14 victory over Shippensburg, in front of 12,331 fans at Williams
Stadium.
The attendance figure marked the sixth-largest crowd in program history and is the
fourth time in eight home games under head coach Danny Rocco, Liberty has surpassed
the 12,000 mark in home attendance.
For the second-straight game, the Flames opened the game by scoring on their initial
drive. The eight-play drive saw Zach Terrell eat up 55 of the 80 yards on the ground,
including a sweeping play to the left side of the field, allowing the running back to find
the end zone just 2:50 into the game, to give Liberty an early 7-0 edge.
The Red Raiders quickly answered back on the ensuing drive. Gabe Maiocco
capped off a 6:29, 12-play drive by completing a 15-yard pass play to Mike Harris, as
the wide receiver caught the sideline pass and found the corner of the end zone at 5:41
to knot the score at 7-7.
Later in the first quarter, the Flames halted Shippensburg on a three-and-out series,
punt after a three-and-out series. Shippensburg punter Kyler Ford pinned Liberty's
Wynton Jackson near his end zone; however, for the second week in a row, the Big
South preseason return specialist broke a few tackles, returning the kick 88 yards for a
score.
The 88-yard return was the second longest in program history, ranking only behind
Andrew McFadden's 93-yard return against Delaware State on Sept. 23, 2005.
The score remained 14-7 until late in the second quarter when Maiocco completed
a pass downfield to Howard Chavous. But the wide receiver was struck by Liberty safety
Ryan Greiser, forcing Chavous to cough the ball up, which Greiser recovered at near
midfield.
Three plays later, Brock Smith found Jackson open over the middle of the field. The
senior leaped over several defenders into the end zone, completing a 22-yard pass play,
giving Liberty a 14-point lead, 21-7, at the 2:43 mark.
After the fifth three-and-out series of the evening, Smith completed a pass to
Jackson on the Liberty logo at the 50-yard line, and after avoiding one defender, the
wide out raced to the end zone, staking Liberty to a 28-7 lead at the break.
Neither team could add to their point total in the third quarter, but Shippensburg was
able to cut Liberty's lead in half midway through the fourth quarter.
The Red Raiders pieced together the contest's longest drive at 14 plays (6:44), culminating
with a five-yard pass play from Maiocco to Dave Wilkerson at the 8:16 mark.
Shippensburg continued to push the Flames on the ensuing drive, as the Red
Raiders' defense forced Liberty to punt after just three plays.
The Red Raiders got the ball to midfield; however, Patrick Calvary stepped in front
of a Maiocco pass and returned it 61 yards for a touchdown, sealing the victory for the
Flames.
Terrell led the Flames' ground attack, rushing for 129 yards on 24 carries and a
touchdown. The junior's 129 yards pushed him over the 1,600 career rushing yards
mark, moving him into eighth place on the Big South's career rushing list. The game
also was the eighth straight in which the running back has found the end zone on the
ground.
Smith finished the evening by completing 11-of-17 pass attempts for 170 yards and
two touchdowns. Maiocco posted similar numbers for the Red Raiders, completing 17-
of-33 passing attempts for 172 yards and two scoring strikes.

Liberty
vs.
William & Mary
Sept. 15, 2007
Walter J. Zable Stadium - Williamsburg, Va.
The Liberty vs. William & Mary contest certainly lived up to the age-old adage that
football is a game of inches, as just a few proved to be the difference in the Flames' 48-
41 double overtime loss to the Tribe at Zable Stadium.
During the first overtime period, the homestanding Tribe managed to eke out just
enough distance on a fourth-and-one play, giving them a new set of downs, which
allowed them to force the final extra period.
However, Liberty wasn't so lucky in the second overtime, as the Flames were held
for no gain in the same situation, with the spot of the ball being just a few chain links
away from a first down when the game ended.
The Flames got on the scoreboard first late in the first quarter. Rashad Jennings, in
his first game back with the program, rushed two yards off the left side for a touchdown
at the 2:56 mark.
William & Mary outscored the Flames, 17-6, during the second quarter, to take a
four point lead, 17-13, into the locker room. The final three points came after Liberty was
whistled for a pass interference play on a deep heave down field.
Because a half can not end on a defensive penalty, the Tribe was given one last
chance to tack points on the scoreboard. And William & Mary took advantage of the
extra opportunity when Brian Pate knocked down a 43-yard field goal.
William & Mary continued to control the pace of play during the third and beginning
of the fourth quarter. A seven-yard pass play from Jake Phillips to Elliott Mack pushed
William & Mary's lead to 12 points, 31-19, with 13:28 left to play in the contest.
However, Liberty managed to piece together two quick scoring drives to send the
game into overtime.
Jennings caught a ball in the backfield from Smith and followed a few blockers 12
yards into the end zone.
After forcing William & Mary to punt late in the fourth, Smith led the Flames downfield
71 yards on 10 plays, taking up just 2:03 on the game clock.
The 10th play was a three-yard run by Zach Terrell with 16 seconds left, followed by
a two-point conversion pass reception by Jennings to knot the game at 34 apiece.
Liberty, playing in its first overtime game since falling to No. 14 Coastal Carolina at
Williams Stadium on Oct. 22, 2005, quickly got on the scoreboard. Jennings burst
through the line of scrimmage on the second play, rushing 25 yards for the score.
The Flames nearly ended the game on William & Mary's very first play of overtime.
Pat Dickerson stepped in front of Phillips' pass to Rob Varno, but the defensive back
was unable to hang on to the hot shot.
Three plays later, on a fourth-and-one, Tony Viola was able to just get the ball past
the 15-yard line, giving William & Mary a fresh set of downs. On the very next play,
Phillips threaded the needle and found Drew Atchinson for a 15-yard strike, just inside
the pylon, to tie the game at 41-all after the first free period.
With alternating possessions in overtime the Tribe got the ball next, and William &
Mary rushed six-straight times to score again. Viola took the first five attempts, accumulating
24 yards to set up a driving, one-yard plunge by Phillips over the pile for the
go-ahead score.
Liberty managed to move the ball nine yards on its next three plays, before calling
upon Jennings one more time. However, the junior, who rushed for 114 yards on his first
27 carries wasn't able to muster one more on his 28th, as William & Mary stopped the
running back just inches shy of the first-down marker.

vs.
Elon
Sept. 22, 2007
Rhodes Stadium - Elon, N.C.
Elon's Scott Riddle and Terrell Hudgins hooked up for four touchdowns to lead the
Phoenix to a 42-14 victory over Liberty in front of 6,796 fans at Rhodes Stadium.
The Phoenix took the early lead in the game, scoring on their opening drive.
Freshman quarterback Scott Riddle called his own number for a one-yard plunge over
the center of the line into the end zone, staking Elon to a 7-0 advantage with 9:09 left in
the first quarter.
The scoring drive was keyed by a pair of completions from Riddle. The first was a
25-yard slant to Matt Leddy, moving Elon into Liberty's territory. The second was a 12-
yard pass play to Terrell Hudgins, giving the Phoenix the ball at the five-yard line.
Elon tacked on its second touchdown of the first quarter when Hudgins caught a
screen pass on third-and-12, and broke four tackles on his way to a 32-yard touchdown
reception. The Phoenix's second 69-yard drive of the afternoon, used 2:29 on the game
clock and gave Elon a 14-0 lead at 4:27.
The score remained the same until late in the second quarter, when Riddle and
Hudgins hooked up for another scoring strike.
On third-and-six from the Liberty 24-yard line, Riddle avoided a pass rusher to find
Hudgins in the end zone for his second touchdown reception, adding to the sophomore's
national leading reception average. The score pushed the home team's lead to
21-0 with 4:50 left in the first half.
After Liberty's fourth third-and-out series of the half, Elon pieced together a nineplay,
73-yard drive just before the break to give them a 28-0 edge.
The ninth play was a draw by Riddle, who tucked the ball and ran five yards for the
score, with 47 ticks left on the game clock.
The Flames were finally got on the scored on their first drive of the second half. After
forcing Elon to punt after a three-and-out series, Zach Terrell found a hole on the left
side of the line for a two-yard touchdown run at the 11:08 mark.
The two-yard burst gave Terrell his 10th-straight game with a rushing touchdown,
dating back to last year's game against William & Mary on Oct. 14.
Liberty got the ball back later in the third quarter, only to give it back to Elon. Smith's
pass to Wynton Jackson over the middle slipped through the wide receiver's fingers and
was intercepted by Walker White.
Two plays later, Riddle found Hudgins open for his third touchdown reception of the
afternoon. The sophomore caught the 15-yard pass over top of two defenders, giving
Elon a 35-7 lead as time expired in the third quarter.
Hudgins capped off his showcase afternoon by giving Elon its final points of the contest
with 9:16 left to play. The wide out caught a 29-yarder in the corner of the end zone
for a touchdown, setting a new Elon single-game receptions record.
Liberty tacked on its second touchdown with 6:17 left in the fourth, when Spencer
Landis completed a 13-yard pass play to Jackson, accounting for Landis' first career
touchdown pass.
Elon controlled the pace of play with its potent aerial game, passing for 401 yards
and four touchdowns. Last week, Liberty allowed William & Mary to pass for 353 yards
and three touchdowns, marking the first time the Flames have allowed back-to-back
opponents to pass for 300 or more yards since 2003 (against Toledo and Bowling
Green).
Liberty failed to hit the 100-yard rushing mark for the first time in 10 games by running
for 74 yards on 22 carries (3.4 average). Liberty's last non 100-yard rushing game
was 85 yards against Wake Forest on Sept. 30, 2006.

Liberty
Sept. 29, 2007
Williams Stadium - Lynchburg, Va.
The Flames scored 42-unanswered points and never looked back en route to a 68-
10 victory over visiting St. Francis, Pa., Saturday evening, at Williams Stadium, keeping
Liberty undefeated at home during the 2007 season.
The contest was played in front of 13,893 fans, giving Liberty its third-straight home
game with an attendance figure over Williams Stadium’s capacity of 12,000. The attendance
count was the third largest in program history.
The Flames took the opening kickoff and methodically marked down field, piecing
together a 10-play, 68-yard drive. Liberty kept the ball on the ground for nine out of the
10 plays, including a 10-yard reverse for a touchdown by to Dominic Bolden at the 10:03
mark of the first.
By the end of the quarter, Liberty tacked on three more touchdowns with all three
scoring drives lasting two plays or less.
The first score came on a 28-yard pass play from Brock Smith to Bolden at 9:00,
followed by a 75-yard run by Zach Terrell at the 6:15 mark. The 75-yard scoring burst
by Terrell was the longest run of his career and gave the junior his 11th-straight game
with a rushing touchdown.
The Flames capped off the 28-point first quarter when Smith found Wynton Jackson
open on a slant pass and the senior got a key block downfield, allowing the wide out to
scamper 60 yards to the end zone.
Liberty kept its scoring spree going on second play of the second quarter. Spencer
Landis found Bolden open for an 11-yard touchdown strike, pushing the Flames edge to
35 points, giving the sophomore quarterback his second-straight game with a passing
touchdown.
After St. Francis’ fourth-straight three-and-out series, the Flames pushed their lead
to 42-0. Rashad Jennings found a hole off the right side and rushed one yard for a score
with 9:10 left before halftime.
The Red Flash erased the possibility of a shutout with their first non three-and-out
series of the contest late in the second quarter. Adam Scuilli knocked down a 26-yard
field goal with 3:00 left before the break, completing a 14-play, 82-yard scoring drive.
Following five-consecutive rushing plays by Liberty, Noah Greenbaum got the three
points back for the Flames, centering a 21-yard kick through the uprights as time
expired in the first half with Liberty leading 45-3.
In the first half, Liberty outgained the Red Flash by 308 yards, 400 – 92, getting 258
yards on the ground and 142 through the air.
The Red Flash was forced to punt on the opening drive of the second half, as they
could only advance the ball to their own 20-yard line. However, Ryan Best got around
the corner of the line, blocking the ensuing punt, which was recovered by Al Bailey on
the five and returned for a touchdown at the 12:16 mark.
During the remainder of the game, Liberty managed to tack on two additional touchdowns
and a field goal. Smith completed a 32-yard pass to Jackson for a score and
Landis called his own number on the first play of the fourth quarter for the Flames final
touchdown.
Greenbaum added Liberty’s final three points with a 22-yard field goal with 8:37 left
in the contest. The kick gave the Flames their third-highest point total in a single game,
tying Liberty’s 68-0 victory over Newport News on Oct. 9, 1976.
The only two contests in which Liberty scored more points was a 69-21 win over
Norfolk State on Nov. 8, 2003, and a 76-6 victory over West Virginia Tech on Sept. 2,
1995.

Toledo
Oct. 6, 2007
Glass Bowl - Toledo, Ohio
Jalen Parmele had a pair of short-yardage fourth-quarter touchdowns, including a five-yard
burst with 3:47 left to play, allowing Toledo to sneak away with a 35-34 comeback victory over
Liberty at the Glass Bowl.
The Flames scored on the opening drive of the contest, marching 80 yards on nine plays.
Liberty put seven points on the scoreboard after a two-yard touchdown run by Rashad Jennings
at the 11:40 mark.
The homestanding Rockets trimmed the lead to four points on the ensuing drive when Alex
Steigerwald knocked down a 29-yard field goal with 3:32 left to play in the first quarter. Toledo took
its first lead of the contest midway through the second quarter when DaJuane Collins avoided
several would-be tacklers to find the end zone, giving the Rockets a 10-7 lead on an eight-yard
running play.
However, Liberty answered right back on the first play of the ensuing drive to take a 13-10
lead. Jennings broke through the line of scrimmage and found an opening that led to a 63-yard
touchdown run with 9:30 left to play in the first half. The ground game helped the Rockets regain
the lead when Jalen Parmele was called on for a one-yard run at the 6:09 mark, finishing off an
eight-play, 73-yard drive. On the ensuing extra point attempt, Liberty's Soeren Wendland was able
to meander his way through the line to block the kick, leaving the score at 16-14 in favor of Toledo.
And the missed extra point allowed Liberty to take the lead heading into the break at halftime
as Noah Greenbaum hit a 21-yard field goal as time expired at the end of the first, giving Liberty
a 17-16 lead. Toledo's quarterback D.J. Lenehan completed 11-of-11 passes for 151 yards in the
first half. And the true freshman, in his first career start, completed his first pass of the second
half. However, it was to a player in a Liberty jersey as Patrick Calvary picked off his team-leading
third pass of the year, giving Liberty the ball at its own 47-yard line.
And eight plays later, Brock Smith found Wynton Jackson open in the flat and the senior
avoided two potential tacklers to find the end zone on a 19-yard scoring play, extending Liberty's
lead to eight points, 24-16, with 11:39 left to play in the third.
The Rockets seemingly tied the game on the next drive. Leneham completed a 28-yard pass
play to Parmele for a touchdown with 6:13 left to play in the third quarter, pulling the Rockets to
within two points, 24-22. Toledo elected to go for the two-point conversion where Brandon Duke
got behind the line of scrimmage to tackle Leneham, but the freshman rolled away from the takedown
and scampered to the end zone. However, after the play was reviewed in the booth, it was
determined that the quarterback was tackled, leaving the game score at 24-22. Bolden returned
the ensuing kickoff 72 yards, giving Liberty prime field position at the Toledo's 18-yard line. The
return marked the third time the junior has returned a kickoff for 70 or more yards.
And four plays later, Liberty pushed its lead to five points when Greenbaum knocked down a
27-yard field goal, staking the Flames to a 27-22 lead with 4:31 left to play.
Less than two minutes later, Liberty added to its lead when Ryan Greiser picked off a
Leneham pass and returned it 35 yards for a touchdown. The return was Liberty's third this year
for a score, pushing the Flames margin to 12 points, 34-22, at the 3:10 mark.
The Rockets responded with their third double-figure drive of the evening when Parmele
when up the middle then bounced to the outside for a four-yard rushing touchdown on the first
play of the fourth quarter. Toledo elected to attempt its second two-point conversion of the
evening, but Leneham's pass to the end zone was picked off by Greiser, leaving the score at 34-
28 in Liberty's favor with 14:53 left in the contest.
On a third-and-three play from midfield, Smith was sacked by Skylaar Constant and fumbled
the ball. The miscue was recovered by Mike Godsil, but forced Liberty to punt the ball away.
With plenty of time left on the game clock, the Rockets continued to keep the ball on the
ground, rushing 11 times out of 14 plays on the ensuing drive. The 11th time was a hand off to
Parmele who found the end zone on a five-yard run, allowing Toledo to regain the lead, 35-34,
with 3:47 remaining. The scoring drive ate up 7:38 on the game clock and took 14 plays with the
Rockets covering 94 yards. A deep pass down field on second-and-12 to Dominic Bolden slipped
through the receivers' fingers and two players later, Jackson was unable to catch a sideline pass,
ending Liberty's final hopes for victory.

Liberty
vs.
Charleston Southern
Oct. 20, 2007
CSU Stadium - Charleston, S.C.
Charleston Southern and Liberty traded points early on, but the Flames scored 40-consecutive
points en route to a convincing 50-10 Big South opening victory over Charleston Southern,
Saturday afternoon at CSU Stadium.
Charleston Southern wasted little time getting on the scoreboard, opening a 7-0 edge in the
opening minutes of the contest, when back-to-back short yardage passes gave the Buccaneers
the game’s first score. The second pass over the middle from quarterback Eli Byrd was caught by
Dee Brown, who avoided several would-be tacklers for a 62-yard touchdown reception just 69
seconds into the game.
The Flames cut into the Buccaneers’ lead on their first possession of the game. Liberty managed
to advance the ball down inside Charleston Southern’s red zone. However, Wynton Jackson
was stopped on a reception over the middle at the three-yard line on third down. Liberty settled
for a 20-yard field goal by Noah Greenbaum, capping off an 11-play, 59-yard drive and trimming
the lead to four, 7-3, with 7:44 left in the first quarter.
Six plays into the ensuing Charleston Southern drive, cornerback Patrick Calvary picked off
his Big South Conference leading fourth pass of the year and returned it 35 yards.
Consecutive rushing plays for 10 or more yards by Liberty’s running back tandem Rashad
Jennings and Zach Terrell pushed the Flames into the lead. Jennings gained 13 yards on the
drive’s first play to set up Terrell, who found a open hole off left tackle for a 16-yard scoring scamper
to give Liberty a 10-7 advantage with 4:18 left in the opening quarter. The run gave Terrell his
12-consecutive game with a rushing touchdown. The early scoring spree continued when the
Buccaneer’s Nick Ellis knocked down a 37-yard field on the first play of the second quarter to
complete a nine-play, 59-yard drive, knotting the score at 10 apiece.
For the third-straight possession, Liberty put points on the scoreboard. Jennings just nosed
the football over the goal line for a 17-10 Liberty lead at the 10:59 mark of the second. The 10-
yard scoring run was the 16th of Jennings’ career in 16 games at Liberty.
The Flames had their consecutive-possession scoring streak halted late in the second when
Greenbaum’s 30-yard field goal attempt try was blocked by Stonewall Randolph with 3:27 left
before the break.Greenbaum started a new streak in the waning seconds of the first half, when
his 33-yard field goal just made over the crossbar and through the uprights with 34 seconds left,
allowing Liberty to take a 10-point lead, 20-10, into intermission.
The score remained the same until midway through the third quarter, as Liberty took to the
ground to add to its lead. Following a 17-yard run by Terrell set Liberty up at the CSU 29-yard line,
Jennings carried the ball four-straight times to eat up the remaining yards. The final two-yard carry
upped Liberty’s lead to 26-10 with 9:08 left to play in the third, after Greenbaum’s PAT was
blocked at the line of scrimmage.
After trading a pair of three-and-out possessions, CSU took over the ball at its own eight-yard
line. Four plays later, wide receiver Markus Murray was given the ball on a reverse, which he
could not handle, fumbling the ball on the 17-yard line. The miscue was recovered by Liberty’s
Trey Jacobs, giving the Flames another scoring opportunity. Three plays later, Terrell found an
opening on the far side of the field and darted five yards into the corner of the end zone, pushing
Liberty’s lead to 33-10 with 4:00 left on the third quarter clock. CSU looked like they might finally
break their scoreless string by driving to the Flames’ five-yard line. Quarterback Sidney Bryant
rolled out for a near-side end zone pass, which Chuck Duffey picked off to end the scoring threat.
Three long pass plays allowed Liberty to quickly move down the field, including two 10-plus
yard passes to tight end Chris Luck. The second pass, an over-the-shoulder catch in the far corner
of the end zone on a 19-yard reception, pushed Liberty’s lead to 40-10 with 11:01 left in the
contest. The Flames continued to roll late in the fourth quarter with 10 additional points. Liberty
capped off a clock-eating 10-play drive with Greenbaum hitting his third field goal of the afternoon,
a 27-yarder, for a 43-10 Liberty lead late in the final quarter.
On the third play of the ensuing Buccaneer drive, Flames’ linebacker Ian Childress stepped
in front of a Bryant pass for an interception at the Charleston Southern 14-yard line. Four-consecutive
running plays by Terry Williams capped off the offensive drive, as the redshirt freshman
found the end zone on a two-yard run, capping off Liberty’s 40-point victory.
