Event Outcome
The event was a complete success, gathering 427
participants from 17 countries. The scientific competition of
papers exceeded the expectation, the best papers being
awarded. The job fair proved to be the perfect tool for
enhancing the connections between the academia and
industry, many such collaborations following the event. The
Challenge Bowl competition was both a real contest and a
memorable show. The networking events and the field trip
connected students, creating friendships and unique
memories.
The wellsite rig experience was a new experience for most of
the students, an example of real industry activities. The stop
at Brazi Refinery presented to students a new and unique
environmental problem and the <strong>geo</strong>physical way of solving it.
The stop at Bran Castle (Dracula Castle) represented a
"dream come true" for most of the international students. The
hike to Spumoasa Waterfall, in Bucegi Natural Park, was a
trip with both impressing landscape and interesting
<strong>geo</strong>logical sites. Finally, the networking games and guitar
singing in the bus increased the communication links,
creating friendships and unique memories.
Over 40 students took part in the three <strong>geo</strong>physical field
camps. Beside the hands-on in using <strong>geo</strong>physical equipment
gained in the field, the students also gained <strong>geo</strong>physical data
processing skills after the data processing workshop. For the
local communities we shaped pollution maps and we
concluded that, regretfully, there is no potable water source
in the valley. By our study we brought a decisive contribution
in forcing the Romanian Government to approve a big
investment project that will bring potable water in the valley
from more than 30 km distance.
16.12.10 networking
Christmas Party -
11 years of BSC
promoting chapter
activities to faculty
professors and other
guests from industry,
creating a semi-formal
environment where
students and
professionals can
connect
This party, an important tradition for our chapters, actively
involved a great number of members in its preparation, thus
being a great opportunity for younger students to get to know
the older ones. The Party has a specific program every year
and it begins with the AAPG former president's presentation
on what activities we had during 2009-2010 for our fellow
colleagues and professors, hopping to encourage better
future collaborations. After the BSC choir that delighted our
guests with traditional Romanian carols, everyone was
invited to enjoy our home-cooked food and thus the
networking started. The students could talk to professors and
get to know them outside classes. We celebrated 11 years of
BSC by handing out gifts, in a Secret Santa manner. Also,
this year we organized a fundraising among students and
professors for children from a Foster Home near Bucharest.

27-29.10.10 field trip Autumn Field Trip
Together with 3 faculty members and 70 student members of
introducing 1st year our <strong>Student</strong> <strong>Chapter</strong>s, we went to Bughea de Jos, the perfect
students to some basic base camp in the route towards several diverse <strong>geo</strong>logical
<strong>geo</strong>logy and showing sites. <strong>Student</strong>s were divided into 10 groups with 6-7
them how vast and members each, having 4th year students in each team. This
interesting it can be and, way, we got students from 4th year to take on responsibilities
in the same time, and put them in a situation that required conveying their
integrating them in the knowledge to others. Work in small groups was a better
already formed group of learning experience for everyone. We also organized small
BSC; for the older competitions between teams, this way maintaining the
students - learning general attention and interest. We combined both a
hands-on some aspects theoretical and a practical approach for learning. Besides the
of the <strong>geo</strong>logy in the scientific aspect of the trip, we also insisted on getting to
areas and make them know each other and integrating all the new students in our
use their theoretical group. So in the first evening, we spent some time telling
knowledge on the field; individuals stories about how we got into <strong>geo</strong>logy and after
teaching students how this we organized some "learning by doing" games (from the
to work in teams Scout Method), through which we underlined the importance
of team work and mutual respect. The night
professionals
In the last years, BSC (of SEG, AAPG and EAGE) meetings
were usually bimonthly and included lectures, presentations
on different topics from students and distinguished guests,
talks about future plans, this was the first meeting organized
exclusively by the SEG SC, being dedicated to the domain of
<strong>geo</strong>physics. It included three presentations. We were
honored to have the CEO of Prospectiuni S.A., Mr. Gehrig
Schulz, who described his experience on the field. Also, two
<strong>geo</strong>physicists hired at Prospectiuni discussed about
exploration opportunities in Romanian Basins and acquisition
in marine seismics. We were excited to have a great turnout,
not only from <strong>geo</strong>physics' students, but also from other fields
of study.
02-10.04.11 field trip
a great collaboration
between the Bucharest
and Aberdeen SC that
will lead in a two-part
project; build a
connection between
students and companies
The project consisted in bringing four students from
Bucharest (one of them was the BSC of SEG president from
that time) and undergraduate students from Aberdeen for
one week of courses and seminars and field trips near
Aberdeen networking. Overall it was an intense week filled
with diversity for the future <strong>geo</strong>scientists.
ore deposits; learning
about the <strong>geo</strong>logy in the
area; connecting with
people from the industry
The same structure of dividing students into teams was again
implemented with success. Also, a field guide was made for
students to keep them on track with the trip's evolution. The
students learned a lot more on the field than they would have
just reading about it and they were excited about finding
fossils, seeing sedimentological structures and
understanding the depositional environment.
The students had the opportunity to spend 5 days at the
mining site with the <strong>geo</strong>logists from Rosia Montana Gold
Corporation. The field trip was well structured
and each day a key-topic of gold-mining in an open quarry
was discussed such as:
<strong>geo</strong>logy, economics, technology, environment and history. It
was an unique opportunity to visit, learn and
understand the hydrothermal ore deposits and it showed
another side of <strong>geo</strong>logy exploration.

students
The group of Romanian and Serbian students applied
several non-invasive investigation methods on the
archeological site (resistivity surveys, GPR, magnetics and
active seismics). <strong>Student</strong>s learned hands-on about using
<strong>geo</strong>physical equipment and data acquisition, but also in
setting-up a field camp. Moreover, we were able to
experience a cultural exchange with the Serbian students
and share our experience in the field and work together in
teams developing our team work skills. We created an
international bond with the Serbian SEG student chapter,
which will hopefully lead to more joint activities. We held a
workshop with the archeologists on site, who were students
at the Universities in France and Canada and their
professors, where we presented and discussed our
preliminary results. Our surveys indicated to important buried
structures. More detailed studies were made by students with
the aid of the project scientific coordinators which will be
presented at student conferences. Based on the results,
prospecting trenches have been approved for the summer of
2012. The field camp was a full success.
Undergraduates, MSc and PhD students from Aberdeen and
Bucharest partook
the 10 days program comprised of short courses and
extended field trips. The link with the Oil
Companies was an essential aspect in bridging the gap
between students, young professionals and
the Industry. The sch<strong>edu</strong>le offered good balance between
technical and social
activities. The project was sponsored by GeoEcoMar,
Prospectiuni SA, Zeta Petroleum and through
“Prof. Grigore Raileanu” Award offered by Mr. Bogdan
Popescu (Zeta Petroleum) to our chapter.
The international Serbian-Romanian group of students
investigated the Mediana archaeological site with
<strong>geo</strong>physical methods. The students gain hands-on in using
<strong>geo</strong>physical equipment and in setting-up a field camp.
Integrating resistivity and magnetic surveys important burried
structures have been evidenced. Also, some sites assumed
to be of interest by the archaeologists have been infirmed.
The project had also a very important networking aspect,
creating strong friendships that are now the key for new
collaborations.

Summary
Please fill out the questions below.
1. What significant goal or contribution has your chapter achieved this year?
Our greatest achievement this year was the 10 day field camp financed by the SEG
Foundation and co-financed by EAGE <strong>Student</strong> Fund and Prospectiuni SA., which took place at
an important archeological site near the town of Jurilovca, Romania. The opportunity of
working hands-on with <strong>geo</strong>physical equipment came as an answer to students’ need of
combining theoretical knowledge with practical experience, very important to future
<strong>geo</strong>physicists. Having representatives from University of Belgrad SC with us was a great
addition to the experience and the friendship that developed during the camp will hopefully
materialize into more joint activities. We had support from the “Vasile Parvan” Institute of
Archaeology, with which we still stay in touch and with which we will continue our collaboration
this summer. The field camp experience has inspired younger students to make more detailed
studies, with the aid of the PhD students that were the project’s scientific coordinators.
2. List any goals your chapter has for next year? Anything important you would like to
try to accomplish?
Over the next year, we want to strengthen our connections with companies and invite more
speakers from industry. We’re hoping on organizing workshops with industry workers. We also
want to continue our great collaboration with the other student chapters in our university – BSC
of AAPG, EAGE and SEG (Society of Economic Geologists); together we will continue
promoting extra-curricular <strong>geo</strong>sciences activities with aid from the faculty. We’ve already
started planning our summer activity, which will be organized as an international “summer
school” that will prepare students to face the real challenges of the industry. We plan on
continuing our work on the archeological site near Jurilovca, but also, with the aid of
Prospectiuni S.A. and Weatherford we want to learn about <strong>geo</strong>physics applied for oil & gas
exploration, more specifically seismics and well-logging. We’re hoping for a great networking
experience between student chapters from the East Europe area.
3. <strong>Chapter</strong> Wish List: What are some things you would like the chapter to receive,
either from SEG or from local companies?
We hope for a better communication with companies; we would like more representatives of
the industry to interact with students to better prepare us for profession. We need more (free)
short courses available for students, from both SEG and company workers. We would like to
receive financial support for organizing our activities and for travelling to conferences and
symposiums. Also, companies should offer more trainings for students that will help us apply
what we have learned theoretically. Also, we think it would be great if the SEG web-site would
support student chapter sites.

Questions:
As the Faculty Advisor, what would you like SEG to
provide to chapters or to Faculty?
More opportunities to contact successful international
professionals from exploration and service companies.
More opportunities for international co-operations
between chapters from the same region, continent and
worldwide.
What do you believe is the most valuable benefit
SEG provides to its <strong>Student</strong> <strong>Chapter</strong>s?
Possibilities to get successful applications in the field,
without borders, integrating theoretical and applied
aspects of Geophysics, involvement with the society,
possibilities to present the results and network with
other students and faculty advisors, professionals for
the benefit of all.
If you could create a wish list for your department,
what would be on it?
A timely, long-term possibility to organize professional
field camps in potential fields, seismics and well
logging, offering our graduates the chance to better
prepare for profession, together with other international
students. Altogether they have to better integrate into
the society of tomorrow.
