HISPANIC INITIATIVE
THIS YEAR, GIRL SCOUTS HEART OF CENTRAL
CALIFORNIA BEGAN A HISPANIC INITIATIVE AS A
WAY TO ADDRESS THE CHANGING DEMOGRAPHICS
OF OUR COUNCIL. THE PURPOSE OF THE INITIATIVE
IS TO INCREASE OUR ABILITY TO CONNECT WITH
THE LATINO COMMUNITY, AND TO INCREASE THE
INVOLVEMENT OF BOTH GIRLS AND ADULTS IN
GIRL SCOUTS.
The Initiative worked in partnership with the
Dolores Huerta Foundation to create the Dolores
Huerta Girl Scout Patch, the first Girl Scout patch in
the nation to honor a Latina. The patch provides
Latina girls with a role model of an inspirational
Latina leader. Dolores Huerta is the co-founder
of the United Farm Workers, and a Girl Scout in
Stockton from the ages of eight to eighteen.
Dolores Huerta attended a family Girl Scout event
in April to present the first patches to over 100 girls
from a variety of racial and ethnic backgrounds.
The summer issue of the national magazine, Ms.,
included a half page article about the patch
and the event.
