Acute Nursing Best Practice
TRIAGE: This is an area of
acute nursing that appears to
cause confusion and debate especially
in terms of roles. The
following information is provided
to help clear this confusion.
The College of Emergency
Nurses Australia (CENA) states
in its 2009 position statement
the following:
―The ability to undertake effective
and efficient triage is dependent
on extensive knowledge
and experience with a wide range
of illness and injury pattern. As
such, it is the position of CENA
that triage and the role of Triage
nurse be undertaken by specifically
trained and experienced registered
nurses‖
The triage nurse is ―a qualified
and experienced registered nurse
(division1 in Victoria) who demonstrates
and maintains clinical
expertise in emergency nursing
prior to undertaking the role of
triage nurse,…. (who) successfully
completes a comprehensive triage
education program prior to commencing
the triage role, .(who)
participates in research processes
to audit and evaluate triage practice,
(and who)..participates in
annual education, training and
professional development in triage
and related emergency nurse
and emergency care activities‖
The College also ―endorses the
use of the Emergency Triage Kit
as a resource book for Nurse
educators to promote the consistent
application of the Australian
Triage Scale (ATS)‖
SWINE FLY VACCINE
A national vaccination campaign is
currently being rolled out across
Australia. The H1N1 ( swine flu )
vaccine is free for health care
workers and they are strongly
recommended to have the vaccine.
All public health services in Gippsland
are currently undertaking a
vaccination program for all staff.
Please contact either staff
health, the Infection Control Consultant
at your health service or
your GP for more information.
The Victorian Department of Human Services
have funded education programs for
health care workers working in residential
aged care. This funding is provided specifically
for education on the commonwealth’s
compulsory reporting requirements
for incidents relating to unlawful
sexual contact and unreasonable use of
force.
Some of this education has already taken
place especially in the eastern subregion
of Gippsland. However education is planned
for November in the Central and South
West subregion. If you work in residential
care and have not attended this education
already, you are strongly advised to do so
whilst you have the opportunity to access
it whilst it is funded.
2010 Gippsland Region Nurse & Midwife
Education Record
The 2010 edition of the Gippsland Region Nurse
& Midwife Education Record will be distributed
across all health services in Gippsland in the
very near future. The new version has been updated
greatly to meet the NBV requirements
for a professional development portfolio and has
been approved by them. A section for reflection
on learning has been included and it is very important
to complete this section for all education
you undertake. Remember to keep evidence
of the education you attend in your portfolio
with your performance appraisal.
The contact details for all of the clinical educators
are listed on the back page. Please contact the
relevant educator for more information about
any of the education listed here.

WHOOPING COUGH: The Department of Human
Services Victoria has launched a campaign
aimed at reducing the number of babies who
contract whooping cough. This highly contagious
disease is usually passed onto babies by
their parents and other family members. To
reduce the number of infections parents and
other care givers of newborn babies are being
encouraged to have a booster vaccine for
whooping cough. It is recommended that adults
have a booster vaccine before planning pregnancy
or for both parents to have it as soon as
possible after the birth of their baby. There-
fore midwives and obstetric doctors are
encouraging parents to have the vaccine
before their baby leaves hospital. Babies
are immunized at 2,4 and 6 months of age.
It is also recommended that all adults
working with or caring for very young babies
especially health care workers have
the booster vaccine as well. This of course
includes midwives.
Palliative Care Education
One of the major concerns in the field of
palliative care is symptom management.
There are a number of websites available
for nurses to access current best practice
information on symptom management.
One resource that is very good is the
Care Search palliative care knowledge
network which can be found at
www.caresearch.com.au . This website has
information on pain, gastrointestinal problems,
respiratory issues, fatigue, sleeping
problems, psychological, spiritual and social
issues, advanced care planning, complementary
therapies and much more.
The Gippsland Region Palliative Care Con-
sortium also has a website with information
on palliative care education in Gippsland,
models of care for dying patients
and a host of other information. There
website is www.gha.net.au/pc . They also
publish a regular newsletter with very
important and relevant information on
palliative care. If you cannot find one in
your health service contact your palliative
care consultant or Judy Coombe,
Projects Support on 56 230615 or
email e.judy.coomb@wghg.com.au .
For specific information on palliative
care for children contact the Victorian
Paediatric Palliative Care Consultancy
they are part of the Royal Children’s
Hospital and their website is http://
14th Australasian Nurse Educators Conference
This 3 day conference was held in Christchurch at the
end of September. The conference commenced on
Wednesday morning with a traditional Maori Welcome.
Over 400 nurses attended the conference from
a number of countries including Scotland, America,
Abu Dhabi, Malaysia, Thailand, Cameroon, and Finland
with over 100 from Australia.
A number of keynote speakers where scattered
throughout the 3 days with concurrent sessions being
the major portion of the conference proceedings, The
majority of speakers were academics with only few
hospital based educators actually presenting.
The opening address was delivered by Dr. Robin
Youngson who is a practicing anaesthetist and a former
engineer. The title of his presentation was
―Where will you cast your pebble‖. He addressed
issues such as who will we serve, will we serve the
gods of technology, of disease, of medicine, of the
clock, of the dollar, of the intellect or are we here to
serve the people. It was a very thought provoking address.
One of the very big issues discussed at length during
the conference was Simulation. It seems that simulation
is being used for everything. One very insightful
comment was made by a University Lecturer from the
USA who was using simulation for her nursing students.
When they where being assessed, real patients/
actors where used and a number of student nurses
where left the room crying because the patients
spoke to them, they where not used to the simulation
models speaking to them. This would seem to be an
issue that needs to be addressed if simulation is more
widely used. The other advance was the use of the
Computer/E-learning for Undergraduate and post
graduate nursing training. The nurses are not actually
attending the University for lectures or tutorials it is
all done on-line.
As there where 87 concurrent sessions I can only
report on a couple that I attended. Some of the standout
presentations included:
1. ―Working together to build capacity for clinical
placements in the Health Sector‖ presented by Karen
Missen from Monash University. The challenges she
discussed included student related factors, planning
for clinical placements, clinical teaching and supervision,
education providers, clinical agencies, regulatory
& policy environment. She suggested Preceptor programs
conducted over 2 days for all staff involved in
undergraduate supervision and rewards for the preceptors/facilitators.
One of the items which I think
would be very useful but time consuming to set up
initially was a virtual orientation to the hospital/
ward area prior to the students coming. The
other issue that was discussed which I am sure
many of you could relate to was the use of a universal
appraisal tool by all universities, would
make our lives much easier when appraising students.
2. ―University clinician partnerships: Developing
an online ―core‖ unit to teach complex multiple
specialty clinical nursing skills‖. Presented by Les
Fitzgerald from Latrobe University – Bendigo
Campus. The subject that has been used initially
is a ―Comprehensive Health Assessment‖ Les
discussed using Action Research – Plan, Act, Observe
& Reflect to undertake this subject.
One of the other highlights of the conference
was the release of a new Australian & N.Z.
adapted textbook for nurses titled
―Fundamentals of Nursing and Midwifery‖ A person
centred approach to care. Co authored by
Jill French from Monash University, Peninsula
Campus. This new textbook which is published
by Lippincott provides a much needed Australasian
perspective to nursing and midwifery care.
The social activities included a Cocktail party/
fashion parade on the first evening and a Conference
dinner held on the Thursday evening with a
70’s theme. Many of the conference organizing
team where unrecognizable in their fancy dress!
It was great to network with colleagues at the
conference and hear what is happening in other
countries, we are advanced in many of the things
that we do both in our hospitals and universities.
These conferences are normally shared between
Australia and New Zealand every second year so
Australia would be the conveners in 2010, however,
as the 3 rd International Nurse Educators
Conference – ―Nursing Education in a global
community: Collaboration & networking for the
future‖ will be held in Sydney from Sunday 11 th
April till Wednesday 14 th April, the next Australasian
Nurse Educators Conference will be held in
Hamilton, N. Z. in 2011. I encourage all nurse
educators to attend this conference and to present
on the wonderful work you do. If you
would like information on the International conference
