<strong>Contract</strong> <strong>Type</strong>: Service <strong>Contract</strong><br />

<strong>Contract</strong> Duration: 12 Months, renewable<br />

Under the medical supervision of the <strong>United</strong> <strong>Nations</strong> Medical Director, the overall<br />

guidance of the Resident Coordinator and direct supervision of the UNDP Deputy Resident<br />

Representative, the <strong>Physician</strong> appointed in a UN Sponsored <strong>Dispensary</strong> will:<br />

1. Provide medical services to all personnel from the <strong>United</strong> <strong>Nations</strong> and its Agencies, as<br />

well as to their dependents, by attending the dispensary on a full-time basis;<br />

2. Be on call during and outside office hours to observe and treat emergencies in the<br />

dispensary or in their homes;<br />

3. Promote health care among personnel from the UN and its Agencies by coordinating<br />

vaccination programmes recommended by WHO, providing counseling on prophylaxis against<br />

epidemics, infectious diseases (when applicable) and sexually transmitted diseases;<br />

4. Facilitate VCT for HIV/AIDS process for UN staff and dependants;<br />

5. Maintain a close liaison with reliable hospitals, private medical facilities and blood banks<br />

which could be used for emergencies;<br />

6. Identify local specialized <strong>Physician</strong>s (e.g paediatrician, cardiologist, internist, surgeon,<br />

obstetrician/gynaecologist, dentist etc) where staff and dependants could be referred;<br />

7. Keep constant contact with the <strong>United</strong> <strong>Nations</strong> Designated Examining <strong>Physician</strong>s to<br />

facilitate their availability as and when required;<br />

8. Facilitate, in consultation with the Resident Coordinator and relevant UN Agency Head,<br />

medical evacuation of UN staff and their dependents authorized by the <strong>United</strong> <strong>Nations</strong> Medical<br />

Director for further investigations and major treatment;<br />

9. Perform pre-placement and periodic medical examinations for staff members from the<br />

<strong>United</strong> <strong>Nations</strong> and its Agencies who choose to use the UN <strong>Dispensary</strong> for their<br />

examinations;<br />

10. Maintain medical records of all personnel from the <strong>United</strong> <strong>Nations</strong> and its Agencies and<br />

advise new staff members on health precautionary steps;<br />

11. Verify sick-leave reports submitted by all <strong>United</strong> <strong>Nations</strong> personnel from UN Examining<br />

<strong>Physician</strong>s and other medical practitioners in the country;<br />

12. Distribute, supervise and appraise the work for the Nurse of the dispensary;<br />

13. Keep inventory of all vaccines, medicines, supplies and equipment and ensure their


eplenishment either through local purchases, or through yearly orders through UNDP<br />

processes;<br />

14. Maintain emergency medical supplies and equipment to be used in case of emergency<br />

situation;<br />

15. Replenish first-aid kits and other essential medical supplies kept in the duty station of the<br />

country;<br />

16. Maintain a database of all visits and treatments provided at the dispensary. Prepare and<br />

send reports of these visits and treatments to the <strong>United</strong> <strong>Nations</strong> Medical Director in New York<br />

on a quarterly basis through the Resident Coordinator;<br />

17. Be a member of the Local Inter-Agency <strong>Dispensary</strong> Management Committee chaired by the<br />

WHO Representative;<br />

18. Perform any other duties as considered necessary by the Resident Coordinator and/or<br />

<strong>United</strong> <strong>Nations</strong> Medical Director.<br />

Competencies:<br />

. Professionalism - Knowledge and hands on experience in clinical medicine.<br />

. Planning and organizing - Ability to establish priorities and to plan, co-ordinate and<br />

monitor own work plan and those under his/her supervision.<br />

. Teamwork - Strong interpersonal skills and ability to establish and maintain effective<br />

working relations in a multi-cultural, multi-ethnic environment with sensitivity and respect<br />

for diversity<br />

. Communication - Good interpersonal and oral and written communication skills.<br />

. Commitment to Continuous learning - Willingness to learn to keep abreast of new<br />

developments in the medical field.<br />

. Technological awareness - Solid computer skills and good knowledge of relevant medical<br />

databases.<br />

Qualifications:<br />

Education: Doctorate in Medicine from a recognized University and able to register with the<br />

Gambia Medical and Dental Council. Residency in one of the medical specialties, preferably<br />

internal medicine.<br />

Experience: At least 5 years of progressive clinical experience in the medical field.<br />

Language: Fluency in oral and written English; knowledge of second official UN language an<br />

advantage and sometimes a requirement;<br />

Computer literate: Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint<br />
