Our Solutions Approach Makes a Difference
While reliable hardware is a vital component in providing the right solution for your control needs, it is only one part of the
equation for success. It is our experience and application expertise that truly differentiates a good product from a great
solution. Instead of providing a “one size fits all” solution, our engineering and design teams integrate hardware and software
products to the particular needs of your power generation facility.
In addition to GE Energy’s extensive experience designing and installing excitation systems, we also draw upon companywide
resources to incorporate best practices and breakthrough technologies into our control systems. This access to GE’s
innovative worldwide businesses and to GE Global Research means that we can continually improve our product in order to
respond to, and anticipate, our customers’ current and future needs. With an established tradition of continually evolving our
technology, GE invests more than $3 billion annually in research and development to help us find better answers for today’s
power generation challenges, while delivering advanced solutions designed to extend the life of vintage systems.
Products like the EX2100 Digital Front End and the EX2100 Alterrex Diode Bridge provide migration paths for many of GE’s
large installed base of products, enhancing aging systems with modern control and power conversion technologies and
maximizing your controls modernization investment. You can count on GE to continue to deliver new features and functions
at a competitive price and to develop innovative ways to reduce the cost and impact of rapidly evolving digital technologies
over the life of the equipment.
Flexibility and Customization
As the original equipment manufacturer for the full range of high performance generation equipment from five to more than
1000 megawatts, we have developed a complete line of EX2100 retrofits to replace aging generator control systems with
Lean Six Sigma Quality
Our commitment to Six Sigma translates to continual
improvement of our design, manufacturing, and installation
processes. By incorporating lean manufacturing techniques
and rigorous Six Sigma design and testing methodologies,
the enhanced quality of GE’s generator controls results in a
proven excitation system that provides maximum reliability
and performance. By the time an EX2100 is delivered to
your site, it has undergone discrete component testing
during board manufacturing, board and module testing
during assembly and a comprehensive final unit inspection
and test process.
Control System Toolbox and ToolboxST*
GE’s powerful Toolbox and ToolboxST software allows
maintenance personnel to easily configure and maintain
the EX2100 by viewing and changing parameters within
the security of encrypted passwords. Also available from
the software are dynamic data and trend recorders with
high speed capture resolutions from 0.5 msec to 5.0 msec,
and live trending configurable at 32 msec and above.
Live, animated graphics screens make commissioning,
programming, and troubleshooting more intuitive. When
the EX2100 is paired with the family of GE’s Mark* VI or
VIe turbine controls and DCS products, Toolbox and
ToolboxST becomes the single interface for all system
engineering needs.
CASE HISTORIES:
Meeting the Customer’s Needs
Digital Front End Retrofit Package Installed in
25% of Typical Time
To meet the stringent outage and budgetary goals of a
U.S.-based utility, GE Energy was able to cut installation
time by 75% for an excitation upgrade solution that
provided advanced controls technology—while maximizing
the plant’s operational flexibility.
Looking for a way to improve reliability of their peaking
fleet, the customer chose the GE EX2100 Digital Front End
to modernize their existing GE Analog Busfed exciters.
Enabling a much shorter scheduled outage and a simplified
installation scope, the EX2100 package was installed in
25% of the time and at about half the cost of the
competing retrofit offer. This EX2100 Digital Front-End
exciter retrofit allowed a timely and cost-effective upgrade
to the utility’s aging and troublesome analog control
electronics—providing them with a highly reliable digital
control and protection platform for eight units where
reliability was important but capital was tight.
Creating Reliable Infrastructure to Support
Economic Growth
In early 2006—at a 1200 MW coal fired power generation
plant in Datong City—GE commissioned the first EX2100
excitation system in China. The EX2100 platform was selected
because it provided the plant with an advanced digital control
application that delivers flexible, user-friendly performance
with high system reliability. This unit marked the first of
more than 40 EX2100 multibridge systems now in operation
or on order for plants in the People’s Republic of China.
