Duke Blue Devil Wrestling 2002-2003 2005-06
Season Outlook
After losing five Atlantic Coast Conference placers from last year’s team, the
2005-06 season will be a rebuilding year for Duke wrestling. However, an
impressive freshman class will begin their first year in the Duke wrestling
program as the Blue Devils seem poised to continue their emergence in ACC
wrestling.
Burlington, Mass., native placed second in the VMI Keydet Invitational at
141 pounds and competed in the ACC Tournament at 157 pounds.
Weisberg went 10-11 last year, competing at both 149 and 157 pounds.
Freshman Ben Wales, a two-time all-state selection from Otsego, Mich.,
will also challenge for the starting spot.
With two state champions and three state runner-up finishers entering their
first year with the Blue Devils, Duke wrestling will look to its freshman class
to make an immediate impact on the season. “This will be a rebuilding year
for Duke wrestling but we have a strong freshman class that will step in and
fill any void,” said Duke Head Coach Clar Anderson.
As ACC wrestling teams continue to improve and emerge on the national
wrestling scene, the Blue Devils face a tough conference schedule in 2005-
06. “The new coaches in the conference have landed some of the top
recruiting classes in the country,” Coach Anderson said. “There will be
improved competition in our conference this year. We expect the ACC
schedule will be a tough test for us but I think that we will be as competitive
as ever.”
A look at each weight class:
125
Sophomore Kellan McKeon, who
went 8-13 as a freshman, returns for his
second season at Duke. Coach Anderson
said, “I am excited that Kellan has
had a chance to lift weights and grow
into this weight class. He is a very
technical wrestler and I expect him to
have a good year.” McKeon was a
two-time state champion in high school.
133
Junior Bryan Gibson returns at 133
pounds this year, after going 34-14 during his sophomore campaign. The
Tulsa, Okla., native finished fourth at the ACC Tournament, third in the Penn
Keystone Classic and fourth at the UNC Pembroke Open last season. His
34 wins in 2005 rank first all-time among single-season records at Duke. “Now
that Bryan is an upperclassman, I expect his maturity to significantly benefit
his competitiveness,” Anderson said. Freshman Michael Degli Obizzi, a
two-time Delaware state champion, looks to add significant depth at this weight
class and will compete with Gibson for the starting spot.
141
The 141-pound weight class appears to be the deepest weight class for
the Blue Devils this season. Sophomore Wes Kuser went 19-6 during his
freshman year which was highlighted by a first-place finish in the VMI Keydet
Invitational. Senior Philip Wightman posted a 6-6 mark during his junior
season after missing his entire sophomore year rehabbing a knee injury. A
four-time state champion from Omaha, Neb., Wightman is expected to
challenge for the starting spot. Junior Antwone Floyd, a two-time high school
state champion who Anderson said is one of the more gifted wrestlers on the
team, looks to improve in his third season at Duke after posting a 12-9 mark
during his sophomore campaign. Floyd finished fourth in the ACC Tournament
last season.
149
Juniors Dan Shvartsman and Zach Weisberg return to compete for the
starting spot in the 149-pound weight class. After posting a team-high 31 wins
and finishing third in the ACC Tournament in 2003-04, Shvartsman compiled
a 15-11 record in 2004-05, competing at 141, 149 and 157 pounds. The
157
The 157-pound weight class appears to be open this year with senior
Brandon Foose, junior Adam Lesser and freshmen Cameron Harms and
Addison Nuding all competing for the starting spot for the Blue Devils. Foose
was 2-6 during his junior year after an 8-15 sophomore season while Lesser
posted a 7-9 mark last season, highlighted by a second-place finish in the VMI
Keydet Invitational. Harms, a Blue Springs, Mo., native, was a two-time
runner-up in the Missouri state championships at Blue Springs High School.
Nuding, who finished second in the Pennsylvania state championships as a
senior, is a two-time all-state selection out of Reading, Pa.
2 Duke Blue Devil Wrestling 2005-06
165
After posting a 7-3 record at 174 pounds
last year, senior Scott Doerr is expected
to drop down to compete at the 165-pound
weight class in 2005-06. Doerr will be
challenged for the starting spot by freshman
Joe Danfield, who was a three-time
all-conference selection at Camden Catholic
High School in Cherry Hill, N.J. Redshirt
freshman Aaron Glover, a former Georgia
state champion, is also expected to
compete for the starting spot.
174
Senior Levi Craig, who won the ACC
title as a sophomore, is looking to repeat
as conference champion in 2005-06.
Craig, who compiled a 23-12 mark
during his junior season for the Blue Devils, will be challenged by junior
Rick Lindquist, redshirt freshman Turner Rooney and freshmen Tad
Anderson and John Barone for the starting spot. Rooney was 4-2 in
his first season at Duke, competing at 174 pounds. Barone, a two-time
state runner-up at William Floyd High School in Shirley, N.Y., and
Anderson, a Raleigh, N.C., native, look to add depth to the 174-pound
weight class.
184
With the departure of two-time ACC champion Frank Cornely, the 184-
pound weight class is wide open this season. Redshirt freshman Dan Fox,
who was 9-7 last year, and redshirt freshman Dan Tulley, who went 5-3 last
season, look to compete with incoming freshman Mike Toomey for the starting
spot.
197
Junior Patrick Keenum, who was 3-4 last year, and sophomore Konrad
Dudziak look to compete for the starting spot at 197 pounds. Dudziak,
Poland’s Under-21 National Champion, was 10-7 during his freshman
season that included a first-place finish in the VMI Keydet Invitational.
285
Freshmen Wade Van Sickle and Mike Tunick will compete for the starting
spot in the heavyweight division. Van Sickle was the Ohio state champion
during an undefeated 48-0 senior season at Liberty City High School last
year. Tunick is a two-time all-state selection out of Annandale, Va., who placed
fifth in the state championships his junior and senior years.

Athletic Administration
Joe Alleva
Director of Athletics
Joe Alleva, a member of the Duke athletic
department since 1980, was named the
school’s sixth director of athletics on February
25, 1998, and has upheld the stature of
the department by striving for success on and
off the playing field.
Alleva had served as Duke’s associate
athletic director for 11 years prior to his elevation, and has been at the
University for 28 years.
In such a short span as the leader of the program, Alleva has
already made his mark by spearheading a multidimensional fundraising
campaign that has taken the athletics program into the 21st
century.
The 52-year-old native of Suffern, N.Y., joined the athletics
staff in 1980 and was named assistant athletic director in July of 1986.
He has also served as assistant director of the Iron Dukes during his
tenure. In 1987, Alleva was promoted to associate athletic director,
assuming a great deal of responsibility for all day-to-day operations of
the department. He also served as the athletics business manager
during Duke’s rapid growth from the mid-1980s until 1998.
Duke athletics has flourished under Alleva’s leadership. The
Blue Devils finished seventh in the 1999 Sears Directors’ Cup, which
rates athletics departments based on the success of its teams. Among
schools that finished in the top 25 of the 2000 Sears Directors’ Cup
standings, Duke ranked No. 1 in graduation rate, with 91 percent of its
student-athletes earning their degrees. Last year, Duke placed fifth in
the final Cup standings — the school’s highest ranking ever.
In 2000-01, Duke won a school-record seven ACC
Championships and captured the championship of the inaugural Carlyle
Cup - a competition between the Duke and North Carolina athletic
departments. Duke has captured the Carlyle Cup in three of the past
five seasons.
Four Duke teams - men’s basketball in 2001, women’s golf in
1999, 2002 and 2005 - have won national championships since
Alleva’s appointment as athletic director. Since taking over the helm at
Duke, Alleva’s teams have notched 35 ACC Championships, which is
second among ACC schools since the 1997-98 campaign.
Alleva’s fund-raising efforts have reached extensive heights.
In 1998, a campaign was launched publicly with a goal of $65 million
and, less than three years later, the standard was increased to $130
million when the department brought in over $110 million.
Support Staff
The Iron Dukes have gone from raising $5 million during the
1997-98 academic year to more than $8 million annually.
Highlighting the use of the millions of dollars raised are the Yoh
Football Center, a $22 million project completed in the summer of 2002.
The 70,000-square foot facility is the new home of Duke Football. Also,
the Schwartz-Butters Athletic Center, a 41,000-square foot addition to
Cameron Indoor Stadium that houses Duke’s men’s and women’s
basketball teams as well as an academic center for all Blue Devil
athletes, and the Sheffield Center and Ambler Tennis Stadium, a pair of
state-of-the-art tennis facilities, have been completed.
The Blue Devil soccer and lacrosse teams have enjoyed
enhancements to their home field, Koskinen Stadium, and the baseball
team played its first season under the lights in 2001.
Alleva has equipped the department to better assist the
student-athlete by providing additional personnel for the strength, speed
and training staffs. An emphasis has been placed on fund-raising, with
new staff members overseeing this important area of growth.
He also established a visionary Athletics Advisory Board
made up of influential business and sports leaders throughout the
country with interests in the Duke athletics program. That group was
initiated in the spring of 1999.
Alleva played football and baseball at Lehigh and was football
captain in 1974. He received his bachelor’s degree in 1975 majoring in
finance and served as a graduate assistant football coach for Lehigh,
earning an MBA in 1976. Alleva began serving Duke in 1976 working
for the vice president for business and finance.
He has played a key role in Durham’s community sports
scene over the last several years. He started Little League Baseball in
174
Duke University was created in 1924 by
James Buchanan Duke as a memorial to his father,
Washington Duke. The Dukes, a Durham
family who built a worldwide financial empire
in the manufacture of tobacco and developed
the production of electricity in the two Carolinas,
had long been interested in Trinity College.
Trinity traced its roots to 1838 in nearby
Randolph County when local Methodist and
Quaker communities joined forces to support
a permanent school, which they named Union
Institute. After a brief period as Normal College
(1851-59), the school changed its name to
Trinity College in 1859 and affiliated with the
Methodist Church.
The college moved to Durham in 1892 with
financial assistance from Washington Duke
and the donation of land by Julian S. Carr. In
December 1924, the school’s trustees gratefully
accepted the provisions of James B. Duke’s indenture
creating the family philanthropic
foundation, The Duke Endowment, which provided,
in part, for the expansion of Trinity College
into Duke University.
As a result of the Duke gift, Trinity underwent
both physical and academic expansion.
The original Durham Campus became known
as East Campus when it was rebuilt in stately
Georgian architecture. West Campus, Gothic
in style and dominated by the soaring 210-foot
tower of Duke Chapel, opened in 1930. Academic
expansion of the university included the
establishment of new graduate and professional
schools.
Modern times have seen Duke realize its
founder’s aspirations to become a major center
of learning. The Duke University Medical
Center has achieved international prominence,
and many Duke schools and departments are
consistently ranked among the nation’s best.

Located in the heart of North Carolina’s
rolling Piedmont region, Durham stands
out as a gem among southern cities.
Through the years, the city has evolved
from a tobacco and textile town into an international
center for medicine, scholarship,
biotechnology and electronics.
Founded in 1853, Durham is widely recognized
for its diversity. Originally a
manufacturing center, the city now is
known for excellence in medicine, education,
research and industry. The wide
range of activities available in the area
lends the city a multifaceted appeal that
strikes even first-time visitors.
Durham has a natural appeal as well,
characterized by 98,000 acres of hardwood
and evergreen forests including the only
remaining old growth Piedmont bottomland
forests and 7,800 acres of cropland.
Hills and dales, meandering rivers and
streams, several lakes, 26 rare plant species
and several rare species of birds and
animals can also be found here.
With 187,000 residents in the one-city
county, Durham is the fourth-largest city
in North Carolina. It is ideally located on
the large and small scale. Within the immediate
area it stands as the pinnacle of
the “Triangle” region of North Carolina, a
metropolitan population of 1,000,000
people that includes Chapel Hill to the
south and west and Raleigh, the state capital,
to the south and east. On a regional
level, this area is the primary center of culture,
sports, education and government between
Washington, D.C., and Atlanta.
With excellent sports and cultural activities
in the area, Durham is a fun place
to be. People from all walks of life — academic,
industrial, professional, agricultural
— blend to provide a warm, rich sense of
hospitality and diversity.
