A VERY SPECIAL SNOWFLAKE SPECIAL! On Dec. 3, GNAG hosted its annual winter party, the Snowflake Special. Picture it...in our magnificent Scotton Hall, the evening was a winter wonderland, bringing in a full house of talent and happy (painted) faces. We would like to extend our thanks to Jennie Aliman who co-ordinated this incredible festival; to MC Jim Watson, MPP for Ottawa West; and to Alyssa Iswolsky, our Snowflake Teddy Bear. Thank you to all the volunteers, the talented performers from GNAG programs and our sponsors, Loeb Glebe, The Papery.and Loblaws Pretoria and Capital Home Hardware. The evening closed with an amazing performance by the Junkyard Symphony. In the spirit of the holiday, the community arrived with donations for the Ottawa Mission. Many thanks for your generosity! TASTE OF THE GLEBE GNAG is hosting the eighth annual Taste of the Glebe on Thurs., Jan. 19, 5:30-7:30 p.m. Last year's event was a sold-out success, raising almost $10,000 for the Glebe Community Centre Renovation Fund. It also gave 350 guests the chance to savour culinary delights from our superb Glebe eateries. Our goal is to enrich the lives of our community by providing innovative and affordable programming for everyone. Funds raised at this year's event will improve our facility and provide financial assistance to those in need. THE GOOD OLD DAYS Thirty Years Ago in the Glebe Report Volume 3, Number 11, December 10, 1975 BY IAN McKERCHER Regional traffic figures were showing a less than one per cent increase in northbound traffic on Bank Street at Glebe Avenue between 1970 and 1975. The 12-hour traffic flow taken in July from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. indicated an increase from 7,518 vehicles in 1970 to 7,570 in 1975. The southbound figures showed a 23 per cent increase from 5,180 in 1970 to 6,758 in 1975. The traffic department at regional headquarters felt that Bank Street was now at saturation capacity and that figures would probably not change much in the years ahead. The Great Canadian Theatre Company staged the second play of their opening season at 91-1/2 Fourth Avenue (the Quaker Meeting Hall). Bernie Bedore's play, Yonder is the Valley, opened in the Glebe to a full house and an appreciative audience. The play was described as "a joyous romp through the nostalgic country of Ottawa Valley history in which the foibles and predilections of our ancestors were portrayed with wit and sympathy." Spokesman Robin Matthews said they did well financially with their "donations at the door" policy and saved the GCTC the hassle of hiring a hall, printing tickets, etc. Under a banner headed Artists in By Ian McKercher the Glebe, Judith Sandiford wrote a lengthy profile on Linden Terrace resident, Malak. Malak came to Canada in 1939 and studied photography under the tutelage of his older brother, Yousuf Karsh, who was an established portrait photographer at the time. Malak was quoted as saying: "I did not want to stay in the studio and photograph peopleI wanted to travel and see Canada. I was more interested in life around me." Though he was very proud of his famous brother, he decided to drop his surname professionally to avoid confusion. He used large-format Lindhof and Hasselbad cameras, as well as a 35mm Nikon. A full page of Malak photographs accompanied the profile. This retrospective is filed monthly by Ian McKercher of the Glebe Historical Society. Councillor Clive Doucet and Carol MacLeod Volunteers clean up Bank Street BY JAINE SMITH Sat., Nov. 19, saw the first annual Great Glebe Christmas Clean-Up, jointly sponsored by the Glebe Community Association and the Glebe Business Group. Working along the Bank Street corridor between Holmwood and the Queensway, a committed band of volunteers collected more than 20 bags of garbage: the usual monotonous clutter of carelessly tossed coffee cups, newspapers and take-out containers. The clean-up was the brainchild of the newly formed Glebe Anti-Litter Committee. The group, chaired by Glebe resident Virginia Carver, was formed in response to the seemingly growing problem of garbage littering the Glebe Report December 9, 2005 12 Photo: June Creelman streets of our neighbourhood. A number of issues are currently under discussion. These include the number and placement of garbage cans along the Bank Street corridor, as well as developing public education initiatives. The goal of the latter will be to instill the idea that the battle against litter is the responsibility of all members of our community. Many thanks to Capital Home Hardware for providing garbage bags and gloves for our clean-up event on the 19th, and to Bridgehead, Morala, Second Cup, Starbucks, Timothy's and Kettleman's Bagel Co. for providing our volunteers with well-deserved coffee and bagels. Urn When Hicham came to Canada as a 12-year-old immigrant from Lebanon, he found it challenging to adjust to life in a new country. A special Grade 6 teacher took extra time to help him learn English and to help him adapt to his new surroundings. "Her generosity taught me that no one is alone; we are all connected and we can help each other." He has carried this spirit of generosity with him throughout his lifeboth in his leadership role at CGI, Canada's leading Information Techncrlogy services firm with more than 1,000 employees in Ottawa, and in his devotion to causes that have a broad impact on the community, such as The Ottawa Hospital. As a donor and Board Member at The Ottawa Hospital Foundation, he is supporting health care today, and contributing to medical breakthroughs of the future at the Ottawa Health Research Institute.
