On the go
at Glashan Public School
BY JUNE CREELMAN
Glashan School takes advantage
of its central location to conduct
many field trips on foot. This allows
Glashan to do many more outings
than schools which have to pay for
buses. Students have walked to the
Canadian War Museum, to the Food
Bank, to the main branch of the Ottawa
Public Library, to Lisgar High
School for a theatrical production
and to Lansdowne Park for a work
fair. The school does take bus trips
as well. For example, all the Grade 7
students went to the Lusk Caves and
all the Grade 8 teens went for an
overnight trip to the MacSkimming
outdoor centre. So far this year,
there have been more than 30 different
out-of-school excursions.
One of the biggest trips so far was
to Toronto for the provincial volleyball
games. The Spikers girls team
came in eighth, while the boys came
second. It looks like Glashan's famous
volleyball program is off to another
good year.
FIRING UP
A NEW POTTERY PROGRAM
Resourceful teachers and staff
have found a way to launch a new
pottery program at Glashan. Teacher
Shawn Marmer and custodian Alan
Ardley found a used kiln from another
school and set it up near the art
room. The school council is raising
funds to cover the cost of clay and
other supplies. Pottery and sculpting
will be a great new addition to the intermediate
art program.
Lady Evelyn
celebrates centennial
BY BRIAN DONAHUE
On Sat., Oct. 22, Lady Evelyn Alternative
School held its official centennial
celebration dayand what a
special day it was!
The festivities commenced in the
school gym with a student_ production
of Dreamcatcher. (Much anticipation
surrounded the show, with
many people lining up for the best
seats in advance of the door opening.)
The junior students presented a
wonderful tale about learning hidden
lessons from daily life experiences.
The teachers and children had
less than six weeks to put the whole
performance together!
Later, in the schoolyard, a special
ceremony took place to unveil a
commemorative centennial plaque.
Attending were Ottawa-Carleton
District School Board Chair, Lynn
Graham (her son Andrew attended
the first class of the alternative program
at Lady Evelyn), City Councillor
Clive Doucet, Lady Evelyn's
Principal Lori Lovett, past-principal
Valerie McKay, Whitman Strong
(his mother, Florence, was school
principal from 1975 to 1987), and
Richard Deadman, chair of the centennial
organization committee. A
beautiful bronze plaque, set into a
large stone at the entrance to the
schoolyard, will serve as a permanent
memento of the school's centennial.
Many alumni, who remained for
the evening alumni dinner held in
the school's beautiful foyer, expressed
their thanks to the organization
committee for a wonderful celebration.
The OCDSB, the school council,
teachers, students, parents and other
volunteers were all associated with
the planning and production of the
centennial celebrations. Special
thanks go out to members of the
school organization committee, including
Richard Deadman, Teresa
Legrand, Janet McKay, Ewa Mroz,
Elaine Bruer, Sue Beattie, Heather
Muir, Geoff Paisley, Sherry Lynn
Page and alumni co-ordinator Hugh
McCord. Many other parents helped
with setting up, preparing and serving
food, and organizing the mounting
of the plaquethank you for
your efforts. The success of the centennial
celebrations can be attributed
to those individuals.
Congratulations on Lady Evelyn's
proud centennial achievement!
