SCHOOLS
Learning beyond
the walls of Immaculata
BY LAURA CHADWICK
Students and staff at Immaculata
high school recognize the resources
available to them beyond the classroom
walls. Many of our high school
courses provide students with the
opportunity to gain invaluable perspective
through class excursions,
guest speakers or extra-curricular
events. Many class trips have already
taken place to the National Arts Centre,
the National Gallery, the Ontario
Court House, Parliament Hill, and
the Museum of Science and Technology.
During the first half of our
school year, a bevy of professionals
visited Immaculata to share their
knowledge with our school community.
Our co-operative education program
allows senior students the
chance to earn credit for their work
at a preselected placement. Students
are paired with a business or organization
in the community and learn
through daily hands-on experience.
Co-operative education teachers and
the Immaculata job coach closely
monitor the students and provide the
necessary guidance. The MAC Destination
Employability Program provides
students who are entering the
world of work with the skills and
knowledge they will need to be successful.
This program also connects
experiential learning to the curriculum.
Imagine a classroom transformed
into a café where the likes of Plato
and Aristotle drop by for a cup of
coffee. On Jan. 15, over 20 parents
and visitors joined the students of
Mr. Letts’ grade 12 philosophy
class for an hour of refreshments
and discussions about the CPT topics
the students chose for their end
of semester task. Guests were
served treats of the mind and body
by the very capable young thinkers.
Every student applied philosophies,
like existentialism, and views of
great philosophers, to their issues
and shared their personal opinions.
Whether challenged or supported
by visitors and peers, all were
heard.
Looking ahead, several students
will have an opportunity in February
to attend a one-day World Vision
event in Ottawa. This high energy
one day event will engage and equip
high school youth for action on global
issues. Workshops will focus on
global issues, leadership skills and a
special assimilation time where people
prepare themselves for action in
their own community. Also this
month, all grade 10 students will
have the option of participating in a
multimedia presentation at Glebe
high school. The presentation, entitiled
“Heroes,” focuses on choices
and risk behaviour. On Feb. 26, the
entire school community with benefit
from a motivational speaker.
Spiritually, the Catholic community
began this year’s lenten journey
on Wed., Feb. 6. The Immaculata
school community began the season
with a liturgy held at Canadian Martyr’s
Church. Students and staff were
encouraged during this special time
in the church year to take the time
for silence, prayer and reflection.
Canadian Children’s Museum presents
Living in Space
Living in Space, presented from Feb. 2 until April 27, in the Kaleidoscope
Gallery, is inspired by the International Space Station (ISS), the largest international
aerospace project ever undertaken by humankind. Visitors become
ISS “crew members” and engage in astronaut activities to discover how people
live, work and play together in a weightless environment.
