Well, it might help if we remember th.il when our ancestors
came into this Eden after the Napoleonic wars and built the big
barns and the red brick farm houses, ihey had hard years also.
The first years were very bad. Our local community was named
Pain Court. A priest chose the name because he found the first
settlers short of bread.
We have been poor an,d we have been rich. Being rich was better,
but everything happens by turns into this world.
There is Comfort of sorts, I don't know why, but there is, in
Granddad Alexander's old volunteer apple tree. ~ —

Maintenance celebrates its
first anniversary, that has become
a familiar refrain in the
Ouesnel area.
But not all the calls to
Argo general manager Case
Van Diemen are about the
roads in Cariboo North.
--You sec, since taking over
the road maintenance contract,
Case and the Argo crew
have developed a reputation
for being community-minded,
with a capital C.
Case has been a member
of the 1993 Northern B.C.
Winter Games organizing
committee and a director of
the Ouesnel and District
Chamber of Commerce. As
well, Argo has been a strong
supporter of Ouesnel Minor
Hockey, Ouesnel Liltle
Theatre, the Bob (jassoff
Memorial Dinner, the 1993
B.C. Northern Winter (3ames,
the Fall Fair and Billy Barker
Days.
As well. Case notes that
Argo management and employees
are active suppiirters
of local sports teams.
The obvious question is
why? Why expend so much
time and energy?
"It helps us to identify with
the community and helps the
community identify with us,"
explains Case.
"] want people to know I'm
around and that they can come
up and talk to me. I'm not
going to hide.
"Plus, there's nothing I like
more than hanging around the

hockey rink."

But there's more lo Argo
than being com m u n i t y -
minded. They are enl rusted
with ensuring our roads are in
perfect working contlilion.
"I though it was a good
year," says Case, who c(mcedcs,
with a chuckle, that the
winter was relatively mild.
"I was quite pleased with
what happened."'

Case adds Argn does more
than snow rcmcn-al; the summer

busy. Work to be done includes
dilch widening, installation
of culverls, brush removal,
mowing, garbage pick-up and
rest area maintenance.
What does the future hold?
Well,'Case says there are
no major changes inthe
works, just a continued devotion
to being the best.
