Biography
Anna Stéphany
mezzo-soprano
Anglo/French mezzo-soprano Anna Stéphany is a
winner of the Kathleen Ferrier Award and the
Guildhall Gold Medal and in 2009 represented
England in BBC Cardiff Singer of the World. Born
in the North East of England, she is a graduate of
King’s College London, The Guildhall School of
Music & Drama and the National Opera Studio.
In the summer of 2011 Anna sang Annio in David
McVicar’s production of La Clemenza di Tito for
Festival d’Aix-en-Provence. Earlier that year Anna
made her debut at Théâtre du Châtelet singing the
role of Rosina in Il barbiere di Siviglia, she also made
her debut in the United States to critical acclaim in the
title role of Charpentier’s Medée with Christian
Curnyn and Chicago Opera Theater and with the
Bolshoi Theatre in Moscow as Orlovsky Die
Fledermaus.
In concert Ms Stéphany has appeared with many of
the world’s finest orchestras including London
Symphony Orchestra, Orchestra of the Age of
Enlightenment, Netherlands Radio Philharmonic
Orchestra, BBC Symphony Orchestra, NDR
Sinfonieorchester, London Philharmonic Orchestra,
CBSO and at the Proms. Anna can also be heard on a
number of recordings for the BBC, LSO Live and
Wigmore Hall Live labels.
Conductors with whom she has performed include
Jaap van Zweden, Thomas Hengelbrock, Sir Colin
Davis, Vassily Sinaisky, Andris Nelsons, Sir Charles
Mackerras, Jean-Christophe Spinosi, David Zinman,
Thierry Fischer, Donald Runnicles, Sir Andrew Davis
and David Parry.
Engagements in 2012 and beyond include a return
to the Bolshoi Theatre to sing Octavian in Der
Rosenkavalier with Sir Thomas Allen, Elgar’s Sea
Pictures with David Parry, Speranza in Orfeo with the
Balthasar Neumann Chor, Les Nuits d’été with the
BBC National Orchestra of Wales, Bruckner’s
Requiem with the Northern Sinfonia, Kathleen
Ferrier Centenary Concert at the Wigmore Hall and
the recording of the title role Serse with Christian
Curnyn and Early Opera Company for Chandos.
Anna Stéphany joins the ensemble at Opernhaus
Zürich this year. Her roles during the first season
include Cherubino Le nozze di Figaro, Dorabella Cosi
fan Tutte and Lola Cavalleria Rusticana. Future roles
include Marguerite Faust, Nicklausse Les Contes

d’Hoffmann and Minerva Ulisse. She will also cover
Elena in La Donna del Lago for Covent Garden.
