He realized that Diver had been speaking to him for
some moments, repeating his name and asking him if he
was all right. A few people had gathered around them in
the street and were eyeing Ethan the way they would a
drunk or a madman.

loudly enough for the others to hear. “I’m fine.”
The strangers around him appeared unconvinced,
and he could hardly blame them. Though the bruises on
his face weren’t as tender as they had been a day or
two before, they had begun to color, leaving him
looking worse than ever. He was wet and bedraggled;
his clothes were sodden. It was no wonder they thought
