Once the sound of Troutbeck’s footsteps had<br />

faded, Ethan approached the stone table. Mr. Pell did<br />

the same.<br />

Pell was young and slight; despite his black robes<br />

and cravat, he looked more like an altar boy than a<br />

minister.<br />

“Did the men of the watch tell you where she was<br />

found?” Ethan asked, as he stared down at Jennifer<br />

Berson’s face. She had been an attractive girl, with a<br />

wide, sensuous mouth, large, widely spaced eyes, and a<br />

straight, fine nose.<br />

“They said she was found on Cross Street. But<br />

that’s all.”<br />

“And what time was this?” Ethan asked absently, his<br />

gaze still on the girl.<br />

“Forgive me,” the minister said. “Who are you, and<br />

what are you doing here?”<br />

Ethan looked up at that. “Mister Caner didn’t tell<br />

you?”<br />

Pell regarded him placidly. Even in the dim light<br />

Ethan could see that his eyes were pale. He had straight
