EDITOR'S NOTE
CONTENTS
Greetings Boaters!
It’s been a busy time since the last issue! Among other goings on, we are
delighted to announce the hiring of new employees Tucker West and
Phil Lin. As the new Plant Manager for our Malaysia facility, Phil is
actually a returning employee, bringing with him an incredible résumé
for building boats and his own history and love of cruising.
In addition to his other duties, Phil has recently overseen an important
change in our model line: Grand Banks has retired the famous 42
Heritage model and launched the exciting new 44 Heritage EU.
An icon in the industry, the last 42 (hull #1560) shipped recently, and
will be replaced by the new 44EU. Just as striking in its looks and
seakeeping abilities, the 44EU has a beautiful new interior design to
go along with a modified-V planing hull. Capable of a comfortable
23 knots, it is equally happy at 12. Most importantly, with one look
at her, you know she’s a Grand Banks. See pictures, specs and standard
equipment highlights starting on page 12.
In order to keep our product lines fresh and to better meet the needs of
new and current owners alike, we have retired a number of models. The
Eastbay that started it all—the 38EX and its hardtop equivalent—are
both making way for the all-new 39 Eastbay SX. With its handsomely
redesigned house complete with curved windows and rounded port
lights, the 39SX is scheduled to wow audiences at the 2005 Fort
Lauderdale show.
Finally, if you read my letter is the last issue of Spray and were expecting
a new and different format—well, let’s just say that with everything
else going on we’ve decided to save the change for 2006, Grand Banks’
50th Anniversary year. Also part of our Anniversary celebration will
be the Grand Tour 2006: Inside Passage event. Alaska has long held the
fascination of sailors, and Grand Banks has decided to make the dream
a reality. As we plan for our first official Grand Tour, we encourage
anyone interested to contact us immediately. Learn more on page 5.
There is plenty more to uncover in this issue. We’ll let you to it!
Sincerely,
12
PHIL LIN
P l a n t M a n a g e r, M a l a y s i a
In every issue of Spray we like to recognize a
Grand Banks employee who makes a valuable
and positive contribution to the team. The most
difficult task of all is narrowing our selection to
a single person.
We are proud to announce the hiring of
Phil Lin as Plant Director of our Malaysian
Operations. Mr. Lin previously worked for
the company from 1977 to 1994 at its facility
in Singapore, where he ultimately rose to the
position of Plant Director.
“Phil played an instrumental role in the
establishment of our new facility in Malaysia
back in 1993,” said Grand Banks Chairman
and CEO Bob Livingston. “Today the
majority of Grand Banks yachts are built at
that plant, and we’re very pleased to have him
back with the company for this challenging
position.”
Phil started at Grand Banks as a Design
Engineer. In 1981 he became a Production
Manager, and was named Plant Director
for Singapore in 1984. Ten years later,
Phil departed to launch his own company,
growing the business into a successful boat
brokerage and repair firm. He was later picked
as Production Manager by Kristen Yachts,
a manufacturer of custom steel-hulled sail
and power boats located in Victoria, British
Columbia.
In his new position at Grand Banks, Phil will
be responsible for the overall operations of the
Malaysian factory, including production and
quality control. He will also join the Senior
Management and Product Development
Committees, bringing his vision and
experience to the company’s renowned boatbuilding
team. In addition, Phil is an avid
yachtsman who has voyaged over 6,000
nautical miles throughout the waters of
Southeast Asia.
Phil replaces Bruce Livingston in the position
of Plant Director, who is leaving Grand
Banks after nearly ten years to return with
his family to a new boat-building venture in
Taiwan.
“Bruce has played an important role in Grand
Banks, and we wish him all the best,” said Bob
Livingston. “Phil brings proven skills and
Grand Banks experience to his new role with
the company, so operations will continue to
move swiftly forward. People here remember
Phil for his outstanding contributions, and
the team in Malaysia is very excited to have
him on board.”
ABOVE
Phil Lin, head of the Malaysian
operations, will oversee the
production of a great number
of models, including the newest
GRAND TOUR 2006: INSIDE PASSAGE
Celebrate Grand Banksʼ 50th Anniversary with a voyage through one of the worldʼs most celebrated cruising regions.
Many people consider Grand Banks to be the ultimate
cruising yachts. Now weʼre bringing you the ultimate cruising
experience, through one of the worldʼs most treasured and
spectacular cruising grounds.
As part of our 50 th Anniversary celebration, “Grand Tour
2006: Inside Passage” will give a lucky group of Grand
Banks owners the opportunity to journey together on an
organized cruise from Canadaʼs Gulf Islands to Southeastern
Alaska. Best of all, we handle most of the planning and
logistics, leaving you free to focus on enjoying the voyage
of a lifetime.
Nowhere in North America are there so many wonderfully
robust and civilized adventures to be had. Get a taste of
the coastal adventure, channel after stunning channel, mile
after dazzling mile, each point or cape revealing yet another
astonishing view. Scenic and historic side trips include visits
to Coastal Tribes villages, plus a chance to feast on crab and
salmon caught along the way. Tuck into coves and harbors
too intimate for the big cruise ships, and come away with a
deeper enjoyment of the area than most will ever know.
Following the three-week cruise north, you may opt to spend
the summer on your own in Alaska, or motor southbound with
the GB group on an abbreviated return trip back to the Puget
Sound area in Washington.
Planning for this event is now underway, currently scheduled
to begin in mid-May, 2006. The anticipated fee to participate
is approximately $5000 per boat, plus $1500 per person
for additional guests joining each boat. While this fee does
not include all moorage fees, fuel, food, and other personal
costs, it does cover numerous events, activities, festivities, and
special amenities that will make this trip an extraordinary,
once-in-a-lifetime experience.
In addition, several Grand Banks yachts will be available for
charter out of the Pacific Northwest, giving GB owners from
around the world a chance to participate in the journey.
Unfortunately, space on the Tour is limited to approximately
20-25 yachts, so now is the time to indicate your level of
interest. Please return the enclosed Response Card, or email
us at grandtour06@grandbanks.com to join the growing
list of interested owners. Once we know of your interest
in joining along with this tour you will receive updates on
schedules, costs, deposit amounts, and the requirements to be
considered for this great event.
The itinerary and fees for the event will be finalized by Fall
2005. For up-to-date information, visit our Grand Tour web
site, www.grandbanks.com/grandtour.
We are proud to
announce the
hiring of Tucker
West as Northeast
Regional Sales
Manager. Tucker
is well-qualified to
assume this pivotal
role between the
Company and
its Authorized
Dealers in the region, working to ensure owner satisfaction
and strengthen dealer relationships.
“Tucker has worked with both sides of this business, dealer
sales and manufacturing,” said Neil McCurdy, VP of Sales
for Grand Banks. “This makes him ideally suited for his new
position as RSM. He understands the challenges dealers
face, as well as the expectations of discerning customers.
And most importantly, he knows the tough requirements
that a manufacturer faces in managing a high quality dealer
network, and the responsibility that goes with delivering the
best boats we can build.”
CUSTOM CORNER |
Tucker is a long-time marine professional, as well as an
experienced boater with extensive knowledge of motor
yacht design and operation. Early in his career he worked
for Sunsail in Thailand, where he helped established and
grow their base of operations in Southeast Asia. Later he
returned to the US and started a long and successful career
with The Catamaran Company, he has been praised for his
successes and contributions to that company’s growth.
Although he has worked during recent years in Florida,
Tucker was born and raised in New England. He will be
based at Grand Banks offices in Newport, R.I., and is
excited about the opportunity to return to the area to raise
his family.
“The Northeast market is of critical importance, and I
am keenly aware of the need to ensure that whomever we
chose to represent us in this region must absolutely have
prior marine experience,” said McCurdy. “Tucker more than
satisfies this important requirement. I think Tucker brings a
terrific blend of skills and experience to a high-quality team
at Grand Banks.”
Brian Pemberton is not just a Grand Banks owner, he is an enthusiast, entrepreneur,
explorer, photographer (winner of a previous Spray contest) and all-around
accomplished yachtsman. As we write this, he is off on his latest venture with his
new charter company, Northwest Expeditions, cruising up the Inside Passage to
Alaska with a small flotilla of GBs. His own, a 49 Classic named Deception, is one
of those GBs making the trip, and we are sure that if there are kids aboard, they are
safe and sound.
One of Brian's latest inventions is a fabulous conversion on
a guest stateroom that converts easily into a protective bunk.
With flip-up side rails to prevent children from rolling out of
bed, it allows parents and grandparents great peace of mind
during the sleeping hours. Seeing as how Brian and his wife
Carol have five grandchildren, we figured he knew what he
was talking about.
Puget Sound is home to the world’s largest Grand
Banks Owners Association, and members of
the group came out in force this May at the
2005 rendezvous. A PSGBOA-record 122 boats were
in attendance, transforming the beautiful resort of
Roche Harbor, Washington into one enormous GB
showroom.
A full spectrum of GB yachts, from expertly-maintained
woodies to gleaming new Eastbays, were proudly
on display. There were even a few Alaskan models,
the beautiful wood-hulled raised pilothouse yachts
American Marine built decades before the Aleutian
Series was launched.
One of the highlights of the event was the Boat
Improvement contest, where owners shared many unique
ideas and innovations they brought to their own boats.
The panel of judges had a tough time deciding between
the many great enhancements to accommodations,
mechanical and electrical systems, galleys, decor and
other owner inspirations.
Another favorite among attendees was the First Mates’
Training conducted by PassageMaker Yachts. The
Seattle-based GB dealer brought several yachts to the
rendezvous, and used to the opportunity to hold handson
boat handling seminars on both single- and twinscrew
models. Big cheers and proud smiles marked
their growing confidence as participants moved in and
out of slips and practiced maneuvers in tight fairways.
Everyone was ready for the next cruising adventure.
There were many other seminars, from informative
lectures to panel discussions to practical demonstrations.
Although the rendezvous was heavily attended and filled
with things to do, PSGBOA Rendezvous Chair Susan
Bland expertly orchestrated the three-day event so that
owners never felt rushed or overwhelmed by it all. It
helped that Roche Harbor provided such a stunning
backdrop, and at dinner on the final evening owners
lingered to enjoy the sunset colors that blossomed over
the rows and rows of Grand Banks.
One final highlight of the 2005 rendezvous was the
announcement of the raffle winners, which included
a trip sponsored by Grand Banks Yachts to Singapore
for a chance to tour its factories there and in nearby
Malaysia. The excited winners were Paul and Michelle
Stamnes. Not only do they own a GB42, Madrona, and
have had other Grand Banks in the family, they even
gave their daughter the middle name “Banks.”
Like the rendezvous itself, it goes to show what a strong
and proudly loyal group of Grand Banks owners reside
in Puget Sound!
f r a n ç a i s
Serge LUCET
SEARCHING for reasons to reunite the members of the
Mediterranean Amicale is hardly a chore, and this winter
was no exception. Grand Banks European Sales Manager,
Luc Colpin, and his wife Ariane, worked with the Amicale and Bob
Livingston to arrange an off-season trip to GB's factories in Singapore
and Malaysia.
For the first time that anyone could recollect, a group of over 40 GB
owners (including Patrick Lelong from Monaco Marine and a journalist
from Motorboat magazine) travelled en masse to Singapore to share
in the delights—cultural, social, and culinary—that southeast Asia has to
offer. During walking tours of each factory, the group marvelled at the
amount of labor that goes into every part of every boat.
Among the many things that struck them was the experience of the
workers at the Singapore factory. 46% of the workers in Singapore
are between 51 and 60 years old, and an amazing 12% are over 61
years old. 30% of all the Singapore employees have over 30 years of
service, and the overall average exceeds 20 years!
On a tour of a 46EU, it was difficult not to notice small yellow stickers
affixed to apparently random parts of the interior. These stickers are a
fundamental part of the Quality Control process, a meticulous step in
the pre-shipment procedure for every boat. As GB owner Serge Lucet
states above, this quality control is "very strict and reassures us of the
legendary quality of our boats."
At the closing dinner, Luc Colpin & Bob Livingston spoke of the
importance of the European market to Grand Banks. After feasting on
pepper crab, Luc bestowed upon the group individual teak plaques
marking their trip with "Singapore 2004."
M. Lucet concludes: "A warm thanks to our friends Ariane and Luc
Colpin and of course to Grand Banks Yachts for the organization of a
perfect trip."
TOTALLY REDESIGNED.
TOTALLY NEW.
INTRODUCING THE
44 Heritage EU
Since the first launch of our Heritage Series
over forty years ago, Grand Banks has set the
pace for quality cruising yachts. This year, weʼre
cranking it up a few knots—and then some—with
the introduction of the all-new 44 Heritage EU.
Strong, spirited, and sophisticated in its styling and
technology, the 44EU marks the next generation
of what has become the most successful production
cruising yacht design in history. Step aboard, set
your course and you know immediately that itʼs
a Grand Banks: rock-solid reliability, balanced by
graceful lines and gracious interiors. The essence
of yachting, captured in fine craftsmanship at
every turn.
Push forward the throttles and you begin to discover
new surprises: soon youʼre passing 22 knots,
riding smooth and trim atop its modified deep-V
hull, designed by renowned architects Sparkman
& Stephens. This hull form was developed to trim
less, optimize visibility, perform well in rough
seas, and use less fuel at higher speeds. Its twin
propeller tunnels allow for the use of larger and
more efficient props when bigger engines are on
board, while the underwater exhaust helps to keep
things quiet on board, even at high speeds. The
placement and size of the keel keep the 44 solidly
on track and protect running gear. The dual-chine
hull gets you up on plane, and along with the
flared bow helps keep things dry on deck.
The 44ʼs generous 15ʼ-3” beam translates to
a bright and airy salon, with fresh new interior
styling by Design Unlimited. The galley-up layout
has been ergonomically fashioned for comfortable
cooking while on the hook or at sea. Granite
countertops, top-quality appliances and cleverly
designed storage make the galley beautiful and
functional alike. >>
The forward cabin is more open and spacious,
with a large island berth and en-suite head. While
the standard layout offers a guest cabin with twin
berths, owners also have the option for a double
berth or an on-board office that can be easily
converted to a private double cabin. Comfortable
guest accommodations extend to a second head
with full shower.
Up on the flybridge, the 44 features a center-helm
navigation console with Stidd helm seat (and an
option for second Stidd seat), molded-in L-settee,
teak table, built-in wet bar, plenty of room for davit
and dinghy, and unlimited sunset views.
One of the most distinctive new features of the 44EU
is the cockpit engine room entrance. Access to the
spacious engine room is gained through use of the
step-down hatch cleverly built into the flybridge
staircase. Simply grab the bottom stair and lift: the
gas-assist mechanism makes it easy to raise and
lower. No need to pull up carpets and climb through
the salon floor.
Down in the engine room youʼll find a pair
of Caterpillar C7 455 HP diesels as standard
equipment, or you can opt for twin C9s for even
more power. Other performance and equipment
options abound—too many to mention here, but
you can find more details at our web site, www.
grandbanks.com.
In addition, The 44CL, designed in Grand Banksʼ
classic trawler style with an aft trunk cabin, will
be released in early 2006. Contact an Authorized
Grand Banks Dealer (visit the “Dealers” section of
our web site to find the one near you) to learn more,
then make an appointment to test the new GB44. It
could be the ride of your lifetime.
New
Program!
Dear Fran,
We have a 1986 Grand Banks Classic. The cutlass bearings
need to be replaced. We need all information, including
diagrams, instructions, etc., for replacement procedures. We
understand there are 3 cutlass bearings per shaft.
We have twin Lehman 135 HP engines, and Borg-Warner
Velvet Drive transmissions. We appreciate any information you
can provide. Thanking you in advance ...
Sincerely,
Louise & Herb Henry
Dear Fran,
The hot & cold potable water piping on my boat is some type of
plastic tubing/fittings. Could you please tell me what is compatible
with it as I need to connect into the system but canʼt figure
out what to use. I have looked at a lot of different materials and
nothing seems to match it. Thank you in advance.
Sincerely,
Exclusively for Grand Banks Owners
Developed exclusively for Grand Banks on behalf of our owners, this
program is offered through Acordia Northwest, Inc. and underwritten
by St. Paul Travelers, one of the largest insurance companies in North
America and a specialist in luxury yacht insurance. We’re confident
that you will find this insurance provides better protection at more
competitive pricing than is otherwise available on standard yacht
policies. Apply Online @ www.grandbanks.com/resources/insurance
Dear Louise and Herb,
With regard to removal we recommend that you have a
qualified boat yard remove and install your cutlass bearings.
Find a yard that utilizes a hydraulic removal tool. Typically
most yards will utilize a hydraulic bearing removal tool which
is a tremendous time saver.
Visit GrandBanks.com to look up one of our Authorized Service
Centers to find a qualified yard near you.
Sincerely,
Fran Morey
N
The plumbing tubing that you speak of is called “Qest“ tubing.
It is a polybutylene tubing.
It is an item that is typically carried by marine suppliers. One
major supplier that carries a good selection is the Lewis Marine
Group. In the Long Island (New York) area the local number is
(631) 477-1900; outside the New York area (800) 832-1752.
You can learn more about Qest tubing by utilizing a simple internet
search engine and type in "Qest tubing".
I hope this helps to make your “connection.”
Sincerely,
Dear Fran,
Dear Fran,
We own a 52EU (Hull #10) and are located in the Adriatic. We
are very happy with our boat but for a small problem: a very
bad smell in the toilets for about two years. Sometimes we can
travel for several days and we wonʼt smell anything. Then, all
of a sudden, a strong smell will come from one of the toilets, or
from behind the drawers. After using the toilet we flush at least
twice, but it doesnʼt seem to help.
Do you have any idea what we could do to solve this?
Thanks and best regards,
Katharina Prada and Willy Griem
One year ago we replaced our 1978 GB32 with a 1995 36MY.
The curtains in the aft stateroom appear to be spotted and from
our prior experience on our 32, we may have little success getting
the spots out. Is it possible to purchase replacement curtains or
do you have any particular recommendations regarding cleaning
(i.e. dry cleaning vs. washing). By the way, we love our motoryacht,
Waterdog, and she is berthed here in Charleston, South
Carolina.
We look forward to hearing from you.
Best regards,
Taylor and Pat Cook
Dear Katharina and Willy,
From you description is seems you either have a leak in the
system or a sanitation hose is permeated. I would recommend
you contact the local Sea Land distributor which you can locate
at http://www.sealandtechnology.com to inspect your system.
Permeation may occur to sanitation hose when the hose is attacked
by caustic chemicals such a bleach.
Dear Taylor and Pat,
We recommend using a mild detergent soap with water and a
brush for spot cleaning. If the curtains are severely spotted we
would recommend taking the worst one of your curtains to a dry
cleaner as an initial step. After seeing the results of having one
cleaned you will then know it dry cleaning is a reasonable investment.
One way to evaluate your head hose for permeation is to take
a damp paper towel (you may want to wear rubber gloves for
this project) and wipe the hose in the area of the odor. Then
inspect the hose by smelling for the odor—if the hose is permeating
the odor will transfer to the wet towel. Not very scientific
but effective, if the hose is permeated you may want to replace
that section of hose. If the hose is not permeated then perhaps
you have a leak when the system is in operation.
Sincerely,
Fran Morey
As for replacement curtains we would recommend purchasing
fabric material and having new curtains made locally using the
old curtains for proper sizing.
You may purchase curtain material from our authorized supplier
by calling Grand Banks Parts at (203) 838-2022. Good luck with
Waterdog.
Sincerely,
Fran Morey

Dear Grand Banks Yachts,
The Portland Grand Banks Yacht Club had another great
summer, including a cruise for a week on the west coast of
Vancouver Island in Barkley Sound, British Columbia.
Here is a photo of our five GBs rafted together in Pipestem
Inlet. Another photo is of John and Robin Hammond (36SE,
Bella Grand) in their dinghy. At the end of our cruise, he and
Robin took a straight line 30-hour Pacific Ocean cruise back
to Oregon. Gotta love and trust these Grand Banks!
While on Vancouver Island, the group hiked around and
explored an old growth forest, even happening upon a cedar
tree with a 75-foot diameter. We estimated that this tree had
been alive for over 1,000 years.
To celebrate our last evening together, we cruised our Grand
Banks to Eagle’s Nook Resort, accessible only by boat or by
seaplane. It is a luxury resort in a picture perfect location.
Following was a memorable dinner that capped a memorable
week on the water.
In 2005 we are contemplating a fall cruise up the Columbia
and Snake Rivers to Lewiston, Idaho (to commemorate the
200th anniversary of Lewis & Clark's Voyage of Discovery).
Very truly yours,
Don Burdick
Lake Oswego, Oregon
Having already owned a number of Grand Banks, including their
first, a 1979 42EU, and 46EU hull #181, the Timmermans decided
to purchase an Eastbay Series yacht to meet their changing needs.
Attracted to its classic lines and quality build, the Timmermans
landed hull #73 of the 43HX model. They find that the 43 gives
them good flexibility for shorter trips “with older children and
busier parents.” The Timmermans plan to cruise extensively in
northern and southern European waters.
Cape Cod, Massachusetts
Bill, Mary, son Matt and dog Costello took delivery of their second
Grand Banks this summer. Irish Jig has grown up from a 38 Eastbay
HX to a 46 Heritage EU. The plan for the new GB is to do some
extended cruising in the comfort and increased size that the 46
will provide. The usual cruising grounds of Cape Cod, Nantucket
Sound, and Martha’s Vineyard will probably be extended to include
some winter ports on the East Coast of the U.S., with the potential
to do some island-hopping in the future.
For years Grand Banks has recognized the growing role
of the Internet in the elaborate process of selecting and
purchasing a cruising yacht. Our web site has been a
destination for thousands of boat buyers, from the casual
browser to the serious customer. We also recognize that as
an information platform, the web is constantly evolving—
as are consumer expectations.
To operate at a level consistent with other luxury brands,
as well as our own high standards, the Company recently
invested time and resources to rebuild the web experience
at GrandBanks.com. The all-new design features improved
navigation, expanded content, and a rich media experience
that better informs owners and prospective buyers about
our company and our yachts.
The most important and exciting new addition to our
web site is The GB Difference, an interactive feature that
uses multimedia content to illustrate the unique hallmarks
and heritage behind every boat we build. In one part of
the program, web site users can take a “virtual tour” of
our factory in Malaysia that follows each step of our boat
building process. Users can also hear straight from GB
owners in a series of video testimonials, or watch movies of
our new yachts in action. An interactive timeline tells the
key milestones in the storied history of Grand Banks, while
other chapters illustrate unique features and philosophy
behind our iconic designs.
Look for more new features coming to GrandBanks.com
throughout the months ahead, including a new Ship Store
web site to showcase the many new items we’ve added to
As always, your feedback is welcome and helps us to ensure
our web site meets the needs of both our owners and new
buyers.
