The lane may have been named ‘From John Rothe’s new building, Third House, in Rothe House Yard’ (De Loughrey, 1976). Rocque’s map of 1758 (Figure 5) shows it as ‘New Row’, running through a breach in the city wall, at which point it is no longer discernable as a route. By 1786, it was renamed ‘New Buildings’, a name which coincides with the construction of New Building house between 1759 and 1772 (Murtagh, 1998). The 1841 map (Figure 6) shows the addition of ‘Lane’ to its 19
