23/05/93 KATLEHONG / PHOLA PARK -<br />

IFP Branch Secretary, Mrs Julia Mtshali, (173 Zuma Section) was kidnapped by alleged ANC supporters.<br />

Mrs Mtshali's remains were recovered in Phola Park on Thursday, May 27 1993. Mrs Mtshali had been<br />

necklaced.<br />

The IFP was alerted to <strong>the</strong> whereabouts <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> remains <strong>of</strong> Mrs Mtshali, by reading a newspaper article in<br />

'The Star" on May 25 1993, which included a photograph <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> necklacing and stated that "The men in<br />

<strong>the</strong> crowd grinned as <strong>the</strong>y explained that <strong>the</strong> woman - believed to be an Inkatha <strong>of</strong>fice-bearer from Kwesine<br />

Section - had been kidnapped from <strong>the</strong> nearby hostel, dragged back to <strong>the</strong> squatter camp and murdered".<br />

Fur<strong>the</strong>r on <strong>the</strong> article states, "A young man took a spear, poked <strong>the</strong> flaming body, and put <strong>the</strong> flesh in a cup.<br />

"Muti", he explained with a shrug."<br />

The IFP leadership in <strong>the</strong> area, who at this stage were still searching for Mrs Mtshali, was highly disturbed<br />

in <strong>the</strong> method <strong>of</strong> notification <strong>of</strong> Mrs Mtshali’s death. In <strong>the</strong> search for Mrs Mtshali's remains, <strong>the</strong> IFP had to<br />

contact <strong>the</strong> journalist, Ms Bronwyn Wilkinson, to ascertain where <strong>the</strong> photograph <strong>of</strong> Mrs Mtshali was taken.<br />

23/05/93 CROSSROADS -<br />

IFP supporters were attacked in <strong>the</strong> Crossroads area near Katlehong. Seventeen shacks were set alight<br />

in <strong>the</strong> attack. Three persons were also killed in <strong>the</strong> attack.<br />

23/05/93 ESHOWE / GF7INRH A -<br />

A meeting was called by IFP leaders to discuss methods to difuse tensions and how to deal with <strong>the</strong><br />

growing refugee crisis in <strong>the</strong> area. The ga<strong>the</strong>ring was addressed by <strong>the</strong> local Inkosi Bantshana Zulu; Prince<br />

Gideon Zulu, a member <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Zulu Royal family and a IFP Central Committee member, and IFP Central<br />

Committee Executive member, Mr Maurice Mackenzie.<br />

This meeting follows <strong>the</strong> murders <strong>of</strong> at least nine (9) IFP activists in <strong>the</strong> area during <strong>the</strong> past ten days. At<br />

<strong>the</strong> start <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> meeting at 13h00 a nearby shack was set alight. The SAP and SADF were called in to<br />

extinguish <strong>the</strong> fire.<br />

At 16h00 gunmen opened fire on <strong>the</strong> hall where <strong>the</strong> meeting was held and killed IFPYB member, Mr<br />

Sabelo Makwayo Ngubane. IFP supporter, Mr Mbikiseni M<strong>the</strong>mbu, was also shot and injured. These<br />

gunmen fled in a vehicle with a Swazi registration number. It is alleged that <strong>the</strong>se attackers were ANC<br />

supporters.<br />

23/05/93 BHOBOYI -<br />

The predominantly IFP supporting community was attacked by alleged ANC supporters. It is believed that<br />

two <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> attackers were killed. In ano<strong>the</strong>r attack near Sister John's High School, ano<strong>the</strong>r attacker was<br />

killed.<br />

23/05/93 KWAMAKUTHA - 15h3n<br />

The homestead <strong>of</strong> IFP member, Mr Nzimande, was attacked by alleged ANC supporters armed with AK-47<br />

assault rifles. IFP members, Mr Zwe Nzimande (55) and Lindelani Raphael Nzimande (30), were shot and<br />

killed. One <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> attackers was also killed.<br />

23/05/93 EMPANGENI / KWAMTHETHWA (NGHAHA WARD) - 18h30<br />

The house <strong>of</strong> IFP member, Mr Enock Mataba, was set alight and destroyed by alleged ANC supporters.<br />

23/05/93 PORT SHEPSTQNE / EZINGOI WFNI -<br />

The shop <strong>of</strong> IFP member, Mr Sithombe Ngcobo, was attacked by unidentified persons. Shots were also<br />

fired at Mr Cele (a security guard). Mr Cele was shot and later died in hospital.<br />

24/05/93 KATLEHONG -<br />

Three IFP supporters were killed in Sali Section.<br />

24/05/93 OKHAHLAMBA / WEMBEZI -<br />

Alleged ANC supporters attacked IFP members in a taxi on <strong>the</strong>ir way to work in Nkwezela section. IFP<br />

members. Mr Pius Dlamini (House no. 246) and Mr Bethwell Mbongwa (House no. 157), were shot and<br />

killed. Fifteen (15) spent AK-47 cartridges were found at <strong>the</strong> scene.<br />

Five IFP members were also injured in <strong>the</strong> attack. The names <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> injured are: Sidumo Sithole, Nelisiwe<br />

Gumede (27), Nancy Mlaba, Bheki Mnguni and Nqinani Mthalane.<br />

27/05/93 EMPANGENI / MATSHANA-SIGISI WARD - 18h30<br />

IFP Vice-Chairperson for Sigisi ward, Mr Zakhele Phineas Luthuli (46), was shot and killed, whilst on his way<br />

to visit his neighbour, IFP Youth Brigade leader, Ms Doris Ngobese.<br />

It is alleged that Mr Luthuli’s name is <strong>the</strong> first to appear on an alleged ANC hit-list <strong>of</strong> local IFP leaders which<br />

was circulated recently.<br />

27/05/93 SEBOKENft -<br />

The vehicle in which IFP Sebokeng Zone 7 Organiser, Mr Ishmael Bojosi, and IFP member, Mr Nhlanhla<br />

Cindi, were travelling, was fired at in Sebokeng. Mr Bojosi was shot and injured in <strong>the</strong> attack and passed<br />

away in hospital <strong>the</strong> morning <strong>of</strong> 28/05/93.<br />

27/05/93 TIG AN E - 15hnn<br />

Shots were fired at IFP members and supporters returning from Hartbeesfontein. The IFP was using <strong>the</strong><br />

only save entry into Tigane, as attacks made it impossible to use <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r entry into Tigane. Shots were<br />

fired at <strong>the</strong> vehicles from <strong>the</strong> surrounding hills. No injuries were reported.<br />

28/05/93 EMPANGENI / SlfilRI -<br />

IFP supporter, Mr Bheki Ngobese (28), was shot and killed and <strong>the</strong> daughter <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> late Mr Mdunge was<br />

injured in an attack by unidentified assailants.<br />

28/05/93 ONGOYE / ESIKHAWNINI - 21h30<br />

IFP member, Mr Zebron Dlamini, was stabbed to death by unidentified assailants.<br />

29/05/93 EMPANGENI / NGWELEZANE WARD 2 -<br />

IFP supporter, Mr Mkhize, was stabbed to death by unidentified assailants.<br />

29/05/93 HLANGANANI / HOPEWELL - 08h00<br />

The house <strong>of</strong> IFP member, Mr Mngabi, was again attacked (see 22/05/93), by alleged ANC supporters.<br />

In <strong>the</strong> attack four IFP members, Marcus Makhanya (IFP Youth Brigade Chairperson) (26), Sibongile Mbhele<br />

(17), and twin sisters, Zandile Nomusa and Zanele Sdudla Mngadi (17), were shot, stabbed and burnt to<br />

death.<br />

Ten-year-old Sandile Ndlovu who was in <strong>the</strong> house at <strong>the</strong> time, but survived <strong>the</strong> attack, was able to identify<br />

<strong>the</strong> attackers as well-known ANC members.<br />

The persons killed were part <strong>of</strong> a group <strong>of</strong> nearly 200 refugees who returned to <strong>the</strong>ir rebuild <strong>the</strong>ir homes<br />

after nearly three months <strong>of</strong> negotiations.<br />

29/05/93 TIGANE - 14h4S<br />

The houses <strong>of</strong> IFP members and supporters were stoned by alleged ANC members and supporters, who<br />

were returning from a funeral. Nine houses were stoned and set alight. The SAP allegedly did not<br />

effectively monitor <strong>the</strong> funeral and left before <strong>the</strong> funeral finished. The SAP also did not respond to calls<br />

from IFP members that an attack was taking place.<br />

29/05/93 OSIZWENI - 17h15<br />

The house <strong>of</strong> IFP member, Mr Zulu (house no. 1314), was petrol bombed by unidentified persons.<br />

Hlengiwe Zulu (15) and Thembile Zulu (1), were stabbed and injured when <strong>the</strong>y were trying to escape<br />

RECORDED INCIDENTS OF VIOLENCE AGAINST<br />

INKATHA FREEDOM PARTY MEMBERS AND SUPPORTERS:<br />

01 -30 JUNE 1993<br />

01/06/93 NDWEDWE / KWAWOSIYANA - 21h30<br />

IFP Treasurer, Mr Ndabazini Nzama, was shot and killed by members <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Internal Stability Unit. Mr<br />

Nzama refused <strong>the</strong>se persons entry into his house, as <strong>the</strong>y were unable to sufficiently identify <strong>the</strong>mselves<br />

as bona fide SAP members. Residents in <strong>the</strong> area are extremely wary about opening <strong>the</strong>ir doors to<br />

strangers, particularly after nightfall, because <strong>the</strong>y fear attack by assailants wearing security force uniforms.<br />

After receiving no response, <strong>the</strong> ISU patrol kicked <strong>the</strong> door down and without warning, opened fire, killing<br />

Mr Nzama instantly, and seriously wounding his son, Oswell. They allegedly proceeded to ransack Mr<br />

Nzama s house and an undisclosed sum <strong>of</strong> cash and licensed firearms were removed.<br />

The ISU patrol reported <strong>the</strong> incident to <strong>the</strong> Ndwedwe police station only after <strong>the</strong> attack occurred and<br />

claimed <strong>the</strong>y had discovered tow AK-47 assault rifles in Nzama's yard (nei<strong>the</strong>r <strong>of</strong> which were produced or<br />

seen by Ndwedwe police). They justified <strong>the</strong> killing <strong>of</strong> Mr Nzama by claiming he had "<strong>of</strong>fered violent<br />

resistance". Yet upon arriving at <strong>the</strong> scene, members <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> KwaZulu Police found 150 empty R5 and R1<br />

cartridges.<br />

01/06/93 OSIZWFNI -<br />

An IFP Youth Brigade member, identified as Yende, was stabbed and admitted to hospital.<br />

The house <strong>of</strong> IFP member, Mr Zwane, was set alight.<br />

01/06/93 OSIZWFNI -<br />

The house <strong>of</strong> IFP member, Mr Khumalo, was set alight.<br />

02/06/93 HLANGANANI / CURRIESBROQK - 08h00<br />

The house <strong>of</strong> IFP member, Mr Mbhele, was attacked by alleged ANC supporters armed with firearms.<br />

Nduna Mbhele (62), Bongumusa Mbhele (16) and Nobuhle Mbhele (3), were shot and killed and six o<strong>the</strong>r<br />

persons were injured. The names <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> injured are: Balungile Nzimande (20), Thandekile Mbhele (11),<br />

Nomfundo Mbhele (9) and Musawenkosi Mbhele. Two houses (Mr Mbhele's and Mr Dlamini's) and Mr<br />

Mbhele's vehicle were also set alight.<br />

03/06/93 KWAMAKUTHA - 18hSS<br />

IFP members, repairing a puncture in <strong>the</strong> wheel <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir vehicle, were attacked by unidentified assailants<br />

armed with an AK-47 assault rifle. IFP member, Mr Eric M<strong>the</strong>mbu (55), and his wife, Remegia M<strong>the</strong>mbu<br />

(55), were shot and killed. Spent AK-47 assault rifle cartridges were found at <strong>the</strong> scene.<br />

04/06/93 OKHAHLAMBA / NTABAMHLOPF -<br />

The homestead <strong>of</strong> IFP member, Mr Hadebe, was attacked by unidentified assailants.<br />

05/06/93 TIGANF -<br />

The shack <strong>of</strong> an IFP supporter, whose house had been set alight <strong>the</strong> previous week, was set alight be five<br />

alleged ANC supporters. It is alleged that ANC supporting neighbours had demanded that this IFP<br />

supporter leave <strong>the</strong> area.<br />

05/06/93 IPELEGENG -<br />

IFP Youth Brigade Chairperson, Mr Paul Dintoe (17), was stabbed and set alight by alleged ANC<br />

supporters. Mr Dintoe had been abducted from his home earlier <strong>the</strong> day. Mr Dintoe’s body was discovered<br />

on 06/06/93 near an old mine.<br />

05/06/93 OKHAHLAMBA / WEMBEZI -<br />

Four combis transporting IFP supporters to Ntabamhlophe were stoned by alleged ANC supporters. The<br />

damaged taxis belonged to: Mr Mthulini Mazibuko, Mr Mayisela and Mr Nhlanhla Dlamini.<br />

IFP Branch Chairperson, Mr Mkhobiseni Bu<strong>the</strong>lezi (48), was shot and killed whilst he was walking in <strong>the</strong><br />

area.<br />

06/06/93 EMPANGENI / KWAMTHETHWA (EKUSAYENI’) -<br />

IFP ward leader, Mr Jeremiah Zungu, was shot and killed by alleged ANC supporters.<br />

06/06/93 OZWATHINI / MATHULINI - 00h15<br />

IFP Organiser, Mr Mcupheni Zulu (45), was shot and killed by alleged ANC supporters.<br />

07/06/93 UMLAZl - 07h00<br />

Two IFP members, on <strong>the</strong>ir way to work at Prince Mshiyeni hospital, were attacked by unidentified<br />

assailants travelling in a vehicle. IFP member, Mr Zwelibanzi Elias Mkhize (16), was shot and killed. Mr<br />

Nhlanhla Cele managed to escape.<br />

07/06/93 UMLAZl - 07h30<br />

IFP member, Mr Mandlenkosi Khwela (39), was shot and killed whilst on his way to work in at Prospecton.<br />

07/06/93 OKHAHLAMBA / WEMBEZI - 06h00<br />

IFP supporters on <strong>the</strong>ir way to work were attacked by unidentified gunmen. Mr Amon Sesi Magubane and<br />

Mr Jabulani Hadebe (30), were injured in <strong>the</strong> attack. Mr Hadebe later died in hospital.<br />

08/06/93 MERAFE -<br />

During a SAP search <strong>of</strong> Merafe Hostel, furniture was destroyed and a large amount <strong>of</strong> money was stolen.<br />

10/06/93 LADYSMITH / EZAKHENI -<br />

IFP councillor, Mr M.P. Basi (56), was shot and killed by alleged ANC supporters. These persons stoned<br />

Mr Basi as he was walking in E-Section and <strong>the</strong>n also fired several shots at him.<br />

10/06/93 THOKOZA-<br />

The burnt body <strong>of</strong> IFP member, Mr Silwane Mlangeni, (previously abducted from Katlehong) was<br />

recovered.<br />

11/06/93 LADYSMITH / EZAKHENI -<br />

The house <strong>of</strong> IFP councillor, Mr S.R. Si<strong>the</strong>be, was set alight by alleged ANC supporters.<br />

12/06/93 LADYSMITH / EZAKHENI -<br />

The house <strong>of</strong> IFP councillor, Mr A. Hadebe, was set alight by unidentified assailants.<br />

12/06/93 CROSSROADS -<br />

IFP members, Miss Gloria Cynthia Sibiya and Mr Sibangani Ntombela, were shot and killed in separate<br />

incidents by unidentified assailants.<br />

12/06/93 THOKOZA-<br />

IFP member, Mr Esau Mbatha, was shot and killed by unidentified assailants.<br />

12/06/93 EVATON -<br />

IFP Sebokeng Zone 7 Organiser, Mr Ishmael Bojosi, (see 27/05/93), was buried at <strong>the</strong> Evaton Cemetery.<br />

It was previously agreed by all parties in <strong>the</strong> Local Peace Committee, that <strong>the</strong> funeral would be held on<br />

12/06/93 and also <strong>the</strong> IFP also agreed not to hold a night vigil in Sebokeng Zone 7, due to political instability<br />

in <strong>the</strong> area.<br />

When mourners were about to leave <strong>the</strong> Evaton Cemetery, a large group <strong>of</strong> alleged ANC supporters<br />

ga<strong>the</strong>red at <strong>the</strong> entrance. It is alleged that ANC Chairperson and a participant in <strong>the</strong> Local Peace<br />

Committee, Mr Watch Mothibedi, was also present. The situation was defused and <strong>the</strong> mourners left <strong>the</strong><br />

cemetery peacefully.<br />

At approximately 15h00 IFP members and supporters were informed that <strong>the</strong> body <strong>of</strong> Mr Bojosi had been<br />

exhumed and was being set alight. These persons went to <strong>the</strong> cemetery and found that <strong>the</strong> SAP were<br />

already present. One suspect had already been arrested.<br />

13/06/93 HLANGANANI / CABAZINI - 16h00<br />

The vehicle in which IFP Webstown Branch Chairperson, Mr E<strong>the</strong>lbert Malinga, was travelling was<br />

ambushed by unidentified assailants armed with AK-47 assault rifles. IFP member, Mr Zenzele Ngwenya,<br />

was shot and killed, (see 22/05/93)<br />

13/06/93 HLANGANANI / WEBSTOWN - 16h30<br />

The house <strong>of</strong> IFP leader, Mr E<strong>the</strong>lbert Malinga, (also see 22/05/93 and 13/06/93) was attacked by<br />

unidentified assailants. Mr Malinga's house and his o<strong>the</strong>r vehicle was set alight. The house and vehicle<br />

<strong>of</strong> IFP supporter, Mr Mtaka, was also set alight.<br />

15/06/93 OKHAHLAMBA / WEMBEZI - 05h30<br />

IFP members and supporters on <strong>the</strong>ir way to work in a taxi were attacked by alleged ANC supporters armed<br />

with AK-47 assault rifles. The driver, Mr Mkhosi Ndaba, was shot in <strong>the</strong> hand.<br />

15/06/93 KATLEHONG -<br />

The burnt body <strong>of</strong> IFP member, Mrs Nomanisiti Ntuli, was recovered.<br />

16/06/93 VOSLOORUS - 14h30<br />

IFP members travelling in a taxi and returning from a commemoration service at Vosloorus were attacked<br />

by alleged ANC supporters armed with axes, stones and firearms. The IFP members fled and <strong>the</strong> combi<br />

(PBN 486 T) was also set alight. Four IFP members, Mr Mandla Mchunu, Mr Themba Thango, Mr<br />

Jeremiah Mtshali and Mr Sipho Sibrya were injured. The body <strong>of</strong> IFP branch committee member (Monise),<br />

Mr Alpheus Falendoda Bu<strong>the</strong>lezi (30), who was also in <strong>the</strong> taxi, was recovered <strong>the</strong> following day.<br />

16/06/93 FOLWENI / ENSIMBINI - 10h30<br />

IFP supporter, Mr Jabulani Constance Khwela (25), was stabbed to death by alleged ANC supporters.<br />

18/06/93 EMPANGENI / KWAMTHETHWA (GCOBA WARD) - 12h30<br />

Three IFP supporters, Ntombiza Hadebe, Vincent S. Gumede and Elijah Msane, were shot and killed in<br />

an ambush by alleged ANC supporters.<br />

18/06/93 GREYTOWN -<br />

IFP member, Mr Wanda Ximba (21), was stabbed to death by alleged ANC supporters. Mr Ximba was<br />

residing at <strong>the</strong> Nhlalakahle hostel, as he was forced to move from <strong>the</strong> township.<br />

18/06/93 HLANGANANI / PATHENI - 18h00<br />

Alleged ANC supporters attacked IFP supporters returning from work on a truck to Pa<strong>the</strong>ni. Three IFP<br />

members, Qondeni Zungu (57), Zothini Zungu (20) and Patience Mpilo (49), were shot and killed. Three<br />

IFP members, including <strong>the</strong> driver, Mr Rob Garmel, were shot and injured. The names <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> two o<strong>the</strong>r<br />

injured are: Nikani Mkhize and Lungisile Basi (16). The firearms used in <strong>the</strong> attack were identified as AK-<br />

47 assault rifles and R4 rifles.<br />

20/06/93 OKHAHLAMBA / WEMBEZI -11 h30<br />

IFP branch committee member (Emahhashini), Mr Mandla Mtshali, was shot and killed and IFP member,<br />

Mr Khanyile, was injured in and attack by unidentified assailants. Mr Mtshali and Mr Khanyile were shot with<br />

AK-47 assault rifles next to <strong>the</strong> Masonite factory gate when <strong>the</strong>y returned for work.<br />

21/06/93 EMPANGENI / ESIKHAWINI J2 SECTION - ?nhOQ<br />

IFP member, Mr A.L. Mbuyazi, was shot and injured by alleged ANC supporters. His wife, Mrs Mbuyazi,<br />

is a member <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> IFP Women's Brigade National Executive.<br />

IFP member, Mr Bhekilanga Fakazi, was shot and stabbed to death by unidentified assailants.<br />

The same attackers proceeded to <strong>the</strong> house <strong>of</strong> Mr Sibiya (see 26/06/93). Mr Sibiya’s house was petrol<br />

bombed and <strong>the</strong> house and garage were destroyed. Mr Sibiya was also attacked and wounded when he<br />

29/06/93 JOHANNESBURG -<br />

ANC member, Mr Michael Phama (45), was convicted in <strong>the</strong> Rand Supreme Court on twenty-one (21)<br />

counts <strong>of</strong> murder and 14 <strong>of</strong> attempted murder arising from three separate shootings, including <strong>the</strong><br />

massacre <strong>of</strong> sixteen (16) predominantly IFP members and supporters on 08 September 1991 and <strong>the</strong> minibus<br />

attack which killed four (4) IFP members on 28 February 1992.<br />

30/06/93 HLANGANANI / EMAWENI - 09h00<br />

A group <strong>of</strong> alleged ANC supporters set twenty-five houses alight. The names <strong>of</strong> some <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> IFP supporters<br />

whose houses were set alight are: Christopher Dlamini, Petros Miya, Nxanga Miya, Mgidli Ngcobo, Khehla<br />

Ngcobo, Clementina Chiya, Macanana Duma, Mbuzo Miya, Mr Ngcobo, Zakhele Duma, Sithuthu Hlongwa,<br />

Albert Hadebe, Mnyezane Miya, Madoda Ngcobo, Aldwina Dlungwane, Mzinjani Dlamini, Jackson Dlamini,<br />

Makhehla Magoma and Mr Memela.<br />

Shots were also fired and IFP supporters, Zakhele Duma (50) and Sibonakaliso Msomi (20), were injured.<br />

The houses <strong>of</strong> four IFP supporters were set alight by unidentified assailants. The names <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> supporters<br />

Three IFP supporters, Roger Ntombela, Bhekizile Ntombela and Nkosikhona Ntombela, from Ncala<br />

bectjon, Katlehong were shot and injured whilst on <strong>the</strong>ir way to Katlehong from Thokoza. Shots were fired<br />

at <strong>the</strong>m from <strong>the</strong> Mapazela School. All three were admitted to hospital.<br />

03/07/93 KATLEHONG -<br />

Three IFP members, Mzimbeni Bu<strong>the</strong>lezi, Mfanyani Bu<strong>the</strong>lezi and Maduks Bu<strong>the</strong>lezi, were attacked at<br />

Stanley Motors/Chicken Farms, situated between Mandela Park and Group 72. These bro<strong>the</strong>rs were<br />

searching for <strong>the</strong> body <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir fa<strong>the</strong>r who was reportedly killed in <strong>the</strong> area. They managed to locate <strong>the</strong>ir<br />

fa<strong>the</strong>rs body and <strong>the</strong>y were <strong>the</strong>n attacked by unidentified assailants. Mr Mzimbeni Bu<strong>the</strong>lezi was shot and<br />

Killed and his two bro<strong>the</strong>rs were seriously injured.<br />

03/07/93 KATLEHONG -<br />

A Zulu-speaking person (political affiliation, if any, unknown), was pulled out <strong>of</strong> a taxi at <strong>the</strong> BP Garaqe<br />

IFP Branch Chairperson (Endulwini branch), Mr Petrus Boy Masenya, was shot and killed at his house (no.<br />

413). It is reported that three unknown persons arrived at Mr Masenya's house searching for him. When<br />

<strong>the</strong>y entered <strong>the</strong> house, <strong>the</strong>y opened fire at <strong>the</strong> persons inside. Mr Masenya was shot and killed and nine<br />

o<strong>the</strong>r persons were injured. (CR56/07/93) »<br />

04/07/93 MONTQBFI I O -<br />

The houses <strong>of</strong> three IFP members, Induna Thokozani Luthuli, Mr Mandla Malinga (IFP Chairperson), and<br />

Mr Ngubane, were set alight by unidentified assailants. This attack occurred after <strong>the</strong> inauguration <strong>of</strong> an<br />

IFP branch (also see 03/07/93).<br />

04/07/93 TEMBISA -<br />

IFP Branch Deputy-Secretary (Emangweni branch), Mr Patrick Khanyile, was shot and killed by unidentified<br />

persons outside his house.<br />

04-05/07/93 THOKOZA - 23h30/00h3Q/01h15<br />

Approximately fifty (50) unidentified assailants attacked <strong>the</strong> predominantly IFP supporting Thokoza 2 and<br />

3 hostels. These attackers were armed with AK-47 assault rifles and hand grenades. The attack started<br />

at 23h30 and lasted until 00h15. One <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> attackers was shot and killed inside a hostel. Three IFP<br />

members were wounded in <strong>the</strong> attack.<br />

At 00h30 a vehicle driving in Khumalo Street fired at <strong>the</strong> Thokoza hostels. At 01 h i 5 two vehicles (a white<br />

Ford Cortina and yellow and white VW Minibus) coming from <strong>the</strong> Alberton side fired at <strong>the</strong> hostels and<br />

houses in <strong>the</strong> area. These vehicles were later found set alight.<br />

05/07/93 KATLEHONH -<br />

Three IFP supporters, two men and a women, were necklaced by alleged ANC supporters. The crowd <strong>of</strong><br />

approximately twenty persons armed with spears, axes and stones ga<strong>the</strong>red round <strong>the</strong> three burning bodies<br />

lying behind refuse bins. These persons chanted, "Sizitholile Izinja. Siyazitshisa" (We found <strong>the</strong> dogs and<br />

we are burning <strong>the</strong>m) and "Viva ANC Viva - Long live <strong>the</strong> African National Congress”.***<br />

05/07/93 KATLEHONft -<br />

IFP members and supporters reported continuous incidents <strong>of</strong> harassment and assault whilst using public<br />

transport. Reports indicate that <strong>the</strong>se incidents are directed at Zulu-speaking persons. Due to continuous<br />

attacks on train lines and train being set alight, Zulu-speaking commuters are forced to risk <strong>the</strong>ir lives on<br />

taxis or stay at home.<br />

06/07/93 KWAMAKUTHA / EMKHAZINI - 70hnn<br />

The house <strong>of</strong> IFP member, Mr Makhafula Khuzwayo, was set alight by unidentified assailants. The attack<br />

occurred after an IFP meeting in <strong>the</strong> area. No arrests have been reported.<br />

06/07/93 OKHAHLAMBA / WEMBEZI - n8h00<br />

IFP Chairperson, Mr Gqiba Bonginkosi Sithole, was shot and killed by alleged ANC supporters. Mr Sithoie,<br />

who was also a member <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Local Peace Committee, had been ambushed by three gunmen armed with<br />

AK-47 assault rifles.<br />

06/07/93 NSELENI / SOMOPHO -<br />

IFP member, Mr Nhlanhla Mathonsi (22), was shot and stabbed to death by unidentified assailants.<br />

07/07/93 EZAKHENI - nhOO<br />

A group <strong>of</strong> approximately 50 - 100 men arrived at <strong>the</strong> KwaZulu bus terminal and demanded that <strong>the</strong> three<br />

IFP representatives from C-Section, who were <strong>the</strong>re on business, come out <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> building. The three<br />

representatives, Mr Simon Hlatshwayo (60), Mr Simon Dubezane (32), Mr Vusi Mbuli (41), told <strong>the</strong> workers<br />

present to hide. The group <strong>of</strong> men outside <strong>the</strong> building <strong>the</strong>n started shooting with AK-47 assault rifles.<br />

Mr Hlatshwayo returned fire and shot and injured two <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> attackers.<br />

08/07/93 KATLEHONG -<br />

Mr Johannes Sithole was abducted by alleged ANC youths when he was walking from his house (285<br />

Hadebe Section) to a nearby shop. Mr Sithole's body was later recovered by his daughter, Ms Mbali Sithole,<br />

at <strong>the</strong> Government Mortuary. Mr Sithole had been hacked and set alight.<br />

09/07/93 OZWATHINI / MATHULINI WARD - 10h00<br />

IFP members were attacked by alleged ANC supporters. IFP supporter, Mr Bhekuthula Hlongwa, was shot<br />

and killed in <strong>the</strong> attack.<br />

09/07/93 SASOLBURG -<br />

IFP supporter, Mr Victor Kheswa, was killed in police custody. Mr Kheswa was arrested after his appeal<br />

on a firearms charged failed. Mr Kheswa was arrested whilst consulting his attorney in Johannesburg. The<br />

death <strong>of</strong> Mr Kheswa follows on a large number <strong>of</strong> incidents in <strong>the</strong> Vaal Triangle where members <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> SAP<br />

have been accused <strong>of</strong> assaulting persons arrested and taking forced statements from <strong>the</strong>m. Three SAP<br />

members have been suspended until fur<strong>the</strong>r investigation.<br />

10/07/93 PORT SHEPSTONE / ENSIMBINI -<br />

One man was killed and IFP Gamalakhe Branch Chairperson, Mr James Zulu, was seriously injured, when<br />

<strong>the</strong>y were ambushed whilst returning from a funeral, by persons armed with AK-47 assault rifles. Mrs Isabel<br />

Zulu was also wounded in <strong>the</strong> attack. The person who was killed, was Mr Zulu's bro<strong>the</strong>r-in-law, Bonginkosi.<br />

This was <strong>the</strong> second attack on Mr Zulu that day.<br />

10/07/93 NEWCASTLE / MADADENI - 22h00<br />

Two IFP Youth Brigade members, Melusi Zungu and Mkhululuki Lymon Si<strong>the</strong>be, were shot at whilst visiting<br />

Section 9. Mr Si<strong>the</strong>be was killed instantly and Mr Zungu was admitted to hospital.<br />

IFPYB member, Mr Sydney Khoza (21), was shot and killed by unidentified assailants.<br />

injuries were reported.<br />

Prominent IFP Women's Brigade member, Miss Cebisile Khumalo, was stoned by alleged ANC youths,<br />

whilst she was walking in <strong>the</strong> township.<br />

13/07/93 OSIZWFNI-<br />

Alleged ANC supporting youths entered <strong>the</strong> Mdumiseni High School, searching for IFP supporters. The<br />

IFP supporting scholars were forced to flee.<br />

13/07/93 THOKOZA-<br />

IFP member, Mr Bongani Mbatha (21), was kidnapped at <strong>the</strong> Thokoza taxi rank by alleged ANC members.<br />

Mr Mbatha was taken to Phola Park where he was assaulted and forced to make a statement where he<br />

alleges that <strong>the</strong> SAP assisted and armed IFP members and hostel residents. Mr Mbatha retracted this<br />

statement before <strong>the</strong> Goldstone Commission and stated that <strong>the</strong> statement was forced and untrue.<br />

13/07/93 THOKOZA -<br />

Trains from Vereeniging, which pass behind <strong>the</strong> Thokoza hostels have been searched every morning by<br />

persons looking for Zulus or Inkatha members. These persons are armed with revolvers and are allegedly<br />

Xhosa-speaking.<br />

13/07/93 KATLEHONG / RAMAKONOBl WEST -<br />

People living in <strong>the</strong> Ramakonobi West area are leaving <strong>the</strong> area, after alleged Civics persons ordered <strong>the</strong>m<br />

to leave <strong>the</strong> area, as <strong>the</strong>y need <strong>the</strong> place open for a battlefield when attacking Mazibuko hostel. Persons<br />

who wanted to stay were told that <strong>the</strong>y will be paying a lot.<br />

ChairPe^son' Mr Mavovo Ngobese, was pulled out <strong>of</strong> a taxi and hacked to death. Mr<br />

on his way to Kwesine hostel to join o<strong>the</strong>rs on <strong>the</strong>ir way to <strong>the</strong> Imbizo at <strong>the</strong> FNB Stadium.<br />

The railway line to Kwesine was damaged by alleged ANC supporters. The SAP had to stop <strong>the</strong> train and<br />

transport Zulus who were returning from <strong>the</strong> Imbizo at <strong>the</strong> FNB sTad.um in Soweto, back X residences<br />

25/07/93 KATLEHONG -<br />

IFP Katlehong Constituency Chairperson, Mr Absalom Anderson Shozi, was burnt by unidentified persons.<br />

Mr Shozi, on his return from Natal, was informed at <strong>the</strong> BP Garage in Schoeman Street, that his house had<br />

been set alight. Mr Shozi insisted on investigating and was abducted. His body was recovered <strong>the</strong> following<br />

day (also see 24/07/93 and 25/07/93).<br />

26/07/93 KATLEHONG -<br />

Seven IFP supporters were killed in continued violence in Katlehong.<br />

27/07/93 KATLEHONG -<br />

The SADF were patrolling next to <strong>the</strong> Buyafuthi hostel, when violence broke out between <strong>the</strong> patrol and<br />

hostel residents. Hostel residents allege that <strong>the</strong> SADF fired at <strong>the</strong>m and that <strong>the</strong>y did not identify<br />

<strong>the</strong>mselves. One hostel resident was killed.<br />

27/07/93 IXOPO- 12h30<br />

IFP Organiser, Mr Dumisani Khuzwayo, was shot three times by alleged ANC supporters. Mr Khuzwayo<br />

was on his way to <strong>the</strong> IFP <strong>of</strong>fices when <strong>the</strong> attack occurred.<br />

One <strong>of</strong> Mr Khuzwayo's attackers was shot and injured by a passerby who witnessed <strong>the</strong> attack. The<br />

attacker was identified as Mr Sibusiso Dlamini, an ANC supporter.<br />

29/07/93 ESCOURT- 16h30 & 18h30<br />

ANC supporter, Mr Richard Hadebe, was shot and killed by an unidentified assailants armed with an AK-47<br />

assault rifle. Mr Thathakhe Hlubi, an IFP supporter, who was with Mr Hadebe, fired at <strong>the</strong> attackers who<br />

hereafter fled. Five <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> attackers were injured.<br />

Two hours later, alleged ANC supporters shot at people waiting at a bus rank. Six IFP supporters were<br />

injured. It is alleged that this attack was in retaliation due to <strong>the</strong> death <strong>of</strong> Mr Hadebe, and that it was<br />

assumed that IFP supporters attacked Mr Hadebe. This is unfounded, as IFP supporter, Mr Hlubi, was <strong>the</strong><br />

person who attempted to defend Mr Hadebe.<br />

Reports indicate that <strong>the</strong> ANC had earlier this year demarcated Escourt into two areas:<br />

- IFP supporters are "allowed" to use <strong>the</strong> bus rank and Indian-owned businesses in <strong>the</strong> area; - ANC<br />

supporters are allocated all white-owned businesses.<br />

29/07/93 NEWCASTLE / MADADENI -<br />

IFP member, Mr Clement Nhlanhla Bu<strong>the</strong>lezi (19), <strong>of</strong> Section 4 was killed by alleged ANC youths armed<br />

with pangas and firearms. Mr Bu<strong>the</strong>lezi had earlier that month been chased away from Mdumiseni High<br />

School by <strong>the</strong> same group <strong>of</strong> youths. During <strong>the</strong> attack <strong>the</strong> house <strong>of</strong> Mrs Thokozile Ngobo was also<br />

attacked.<br />

29/07/93 EGUNJANENI / MTUBATUBA -<br />

IFP Branch Chairperson and Induna, Mr Mz<strong>of</strong>ile Mhlwanazi, was shot and killed by unidentified assailants.<br />

30/07/93 NEWCASTLE / MADADENI - 20h30<br />

IFPYB members going to <strong>the</strong> night vigil <strong>of</strong> Mr Vusi Hadebe (see 22/07/93) were attacked by a group <strong>of</strong><br />

alleged ANC supporters. Delisile Khumalo (17) and Purity Mokoena (18) were hacked to death and Buzani<br />

Kunene was shot and killed. Three IFP members were also injured in <strong>the</strong> attack, including Phumizile<br />

Khumalo who was admitted to Madadeni Hospital.<br />

30/07/93 UMKHOMAZI / MASHIWASE -<br />

A minibus, which IFP supporter, Mr Ze<strong>the</strong>mbe Shange, was driving, was ambushed by unidentified<br />

assailants. Mr Shange and an unidentified 10-year-old boy were shot and killed. The attackers were armed<br />

with AK-47 assault rifles and were dressed in SADF uniforms.<br />

30/07/93 KWADLANGEZWA -<br />

IFP member, Mr Sifiso Dube (22), was shot and killed by unidentified assailants.<br />

30/07/93 IVORY PARK - 00h05 & 04h00<br />

Three IFP members were killed in separate incidents. Mr Justice Mabela was killed when ten men entered<br />

his room and accused him <strong>of</strong> being a spy for <strong>the</strong> Zulus. Mr Mabela was shot and killed.<br />

Later <strong>the</strong> same morning, unidentified attackers fired several shots with AK-47 assault rifles into a room filled '<br />

with Zulu-speaking persons. Two IFP members, Mr Nomusa Ngwenya and Mr Elias Zulu, were killed.<br />

30/07/93 VOSLOORUS -<br />

Shots were fired at <strong>the</strong> predominantly IFP supporting Vosloorus hostel by a group <strong>of</strong> persons<br />

commemorating <strong>the</strong> death <strong>of</strong> Mr Chris Hani. The mobile police station and a vehicle were hit by <strong>the</strong> gunfire.<br />

The SAP intervened after hostel residents stormed <strong>the</strong> protesters and <strong>the</strong>y fired teargas into <strong>the</strong> hostel.<br />

Two alleged ANC supporters were killed and ano<strong>the</strong>r two were injured.<br />

01/08/93 TAYLOR'S HALT / INADI -<br />

Four IFP supporters were killed in an attack by unidentified assailants. The names <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> deceased are:<br />

Mr Wilson Lambo (39) (IFP Branch Treasurer - Mvundlweni), Mr Hezekia Mkhize (42), Kinile Mguse (39)<br />

and Mr Bongani Ndlovu.<br />

The ANC has denied claims by <strong>the</strong> IFP that <strong>the</strong>se deaths were related to opposition regarding <strong>the</strong><br />

installation <strong>of</strong> a new chief and <strong>the</strong> ANC's opposition to traditional leaders. Chief Godfrey Zondi was<br />

inaugurated that Saturday.<br />

01/08/93 UMGABABA / EHLANZENI -<br />

IFP member, Mr Sigadla Ntombela, was shot and killed at his house by unidentified assailants. An<br />

assortment <strong>of</strong> firearms were used in <strong>the</strong> attack.<br />

02/08/93 RICHMOND -<br />

IFP members, Mr Mqapheli Zuma, Mrs Zuma and Mr Fana Mbhele, were killed by alleged ANC supporters.<br />

03/08/93 OSIZWENI - 20h30<br />

IFP Youth Brigade Chairperson, Mr Si<strong>the</strong>lo Khumalo, was shot and killed by unidentified assailants.<br />

04/08/93 OSIZWFNI -<br />

IFP supporter. Mr Dumisani Phillip Ndlovu, was killed by alleged ANC supporters.<br />

05/08/93 FOLWENI / EMANGAZINI -<br />

IFP member and prominent businessman, Mr Mnyandu, was harassed and assaulted by members <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

Internal Stability Unit (ISU). It is reported that <strong>the</strong>y demanded that he give <strong>the</strong>m firearms which he had<br />

allegedly received from Ulundi. The house was searched, but nothing was found.<br />

07/08/93 THQKQ7A -<br />

IFP Branch Chairperson, Mr Simon Mazibuko, was abducted from his house and his body was later<br />

recovered. Mr Mazibuko had been shot and killed.<br />

07/08/93 EZIMBOKODWENI -<br />

IFP member, Mr Khene Ngcobo, was shot and killed by unknown youths. These youths also stole money<br />

and property from Mr Ngcobo's house.<br />

09/08/93 MADINI / KWASOMONDO - 13hnn<br />

IFPYB member, Mr Muziwandile Lucky Manxele (21), was shot and killed by alleged ANC supporters. IFP<br />

members and supporters in <strong>the</strong> area also complain that ISU members damage <strong>the</strong>ir property during <strong>the</strong>ir<br />

continuous searches.<br />

10/08/93 THOKQ7A-<br />

The funeral procession <strong>of</strong> IFP member, Mr Sipho Shabalala, was attacked by alleged ANC supporting<br />

youths. Three IFP supporters were shot and killed in <strong>the</strong> attack.<br />

15/08/93 THQKQ7A-<br />

Prominent IFP member, Mr Samson Nhlapo (fa<strong>the</strong>r <strong>of</strong> UWUSA Publicity Secretary, Mr Duke Senakgomo)<br />

was abducted after his house was attacked. The body <strong>of</strong> Mr Nhlapo was later recovered.<br />

16/08/93 ESHOWE / NYANINI - 05h0n<br />

IFP member, Mr Mandlenkosi Dlamini (47), was stabbed and shot to death by alleged ANC members when<br />

he went to investigate why an outside light went <strong>of</strong>f.<br />

16/08/93 ESCOURT / WEMBEZI -<br />

A taxi driven by IFP member, Mr Nqinane Mthalane, was ambushed by an identified ANC member. Mr<br />

Mthalane was shot three times and his firearm was also stolen. ANC member, Mr Maphenqe Zamisa, was<br />

arrested, but let out on bail on 18/08/93 in <strong>the</strong> Escourt Magistrate's Court.<br />

16/08/93 ESCOURT / WEMBEZI -<br />

The body <strong>of</strong> IFP member, Mr Batshobhi Dlamini (from \/Q Section), was discovered at <strong>the</strong> entrance to<br />

Wembezi.<br />

16/08/93 EZAKHENI -<br />

IFP member, Mr Thamsaqa Zikalala (22), <strong>of</strong> Cl Section, was stabbed and burnt to death by alleged ANC<br />

members from E Section. Reports indicate that Mr Zikalala was travelling in a taxi which was stopped by<br />

alleged ANC supporters. This group first spoke to <strong>the</strong> taxi driver, before taking Mr Zikalala away.<br />

17/08/93 HLANGANANI / AMAQADI - 19h00<br />

IFP Organiser (Mdutshini branch) and Chief Councillor <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> AmaQadi Tribal Authority, Mr Simon Mattanda<br />

Goba (66), was shot by a group <strong>of</strong> approximately 30 men wearing camouflage uniforms. These attackers<br />

entered <strong>the</strong> house, claiming to be policemen. It is alleged that <strong>the</strong> attackers are from <strong>the</strong> predominantly<br />

ANC area in Richmond.<br />

17/08/93 THOKOZA / PENDUKA -<br />

The IFP leadership called a meeting in Penduka Section to discuss why some persons are fleeing <strong>the</strong> area.<br />

The IFP leaders were informed that some people living in <strong>the</strong> area were receiving notes that <strong>the</strong>y should<br />

leave <strong>the</strong> area by a specific date or face attack. O<strong>the</strong>rs stated that <strong>the</strong>y were told that uMkhonto we Sizwe<br />

was going to attack <strong>the</strong> area and that <strong>the</strong>y should leave, as <strong>the</strong>y would be seen as IFP supporters if <strong>the</strong>y<br />

did not do so.<br />

18/08/93 MALUKAZI -<br />

IFP member, Mr Dumisani Khumalo (36), was shot and killed by unidentified assailants whilst he was<br />

waiting at a bus stop to go to work. It is alleged that <strong>the</strong> attackers are from Zamani near Umlazi.<br />

18/08/93 ESCOURT / WEMBF7I -<br />

The house <strong>of</strong> IFP leader, Mr Duke Mbongwa, was set alight by unidentified assailants.<br />

18/08/93 VOSLOORUS -<br />

IFP Youth Brigade member, Mr Msontho Makhathini (16), was abducted by alleged ANC supporters at<br />

Angus Railway Station and taken to a burnt out house in Thokoza Gardens. It is fur<strong>the</strong>r alleged that black<br />

SAP members followed <strong>the</strong> abductors and instead <strong>of</strong> apprehending <strong>the</strong>m gave <strong>the</strong>m alcohol and thanked<br />

<strong>the</strong>m for destroying <strong>the</strong> IFP. Mr Makhathini was injured, but managed to escape He also positively<br />

identified one <strong>of</strong> his attackers (ANCYL member).<br />

A group <strong>of</strong> approximately 300 alleged ANC supporters from Katlehong armed with AK-47 assault rifles<br />

attacked Penduka Section. A hand grenade was also hurled at <strong>the</strong> house (433 Monyani Street) <strong>of</strong> IFP<br />

by two gunmen from Twala Section.<br />

Mr Bhekuyise Chamane was pulled out <strong>of</strong> his taxi at Osizweni Dry Cleaners and shot in <strong>the</strong> mouth by<br />

alleged ANC supporters from <strong>the</strong> Sotho Section.<br />

Mr Amon Khanyile was stabbed in <strong>the</strong> back at Letsoho Shopping Centre by alleged ANC supportinq youths<br />

A taxi <strong>of</strong> Mr Musewenduna Masondo (IFP) was shot at near <strong>the</strong> Shell Garage in Khumalo Street by a group<br />

<strong>of</strong> blanketed men allegedly from Mandela informal settlement. IFP supporter, Miss Busi Zondo was shot<br />

in <strong>the</strong> arm.<br />

07/09/93 THOKOZA -<br />

IFP Othandeni Branch Secretary, Mrs Meriam Lilly Dlamini, was abducted from her house in Extension 2<br />

y five men armed with AK-47 assault rifles. Her corpse was recovered in <strong>the</strong> cemetery.<br />

08/09/93 THOKOZA -<br />

IFP member, Ms Albertina Zikalala, was hacked to death at Letsoho Shopping Centre by a group <strong>of</strong> alleged<br />

ANC supporting youths from Twala Section.<br />

09/09/93 THOKOZA -<br />

Ms Selina Sakwe was stabbed at Mkhathiswe Primary School by a group <strong>of</strong> alleged ANC supporting youths -<br />

(some wearing ANC caps). The SAP intervened and <strong>the</strong>se youths fled. Ms Sakwe was admitted to<br />

Natalspruit Hospital.<br />

10/09/93 THOKOZA -<br />

The c<strong>of</strong>fin <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> late Mr Samson Mkhize was shot at by alleged ANC supporters when <strong>the</strong>y attacked 13<br />

Mazibuko Street. Mr Sifiso Mkhize was shot in <strong>the</strong> leg.<br />

Mr Michael Phakathi was slapped across <strong>the</strong> face and robbed <strong>of</strong> R70 in Phumlamqashi by two alleged ANC<br />

youths (one weanng a T-shirt reading "Hamba kahle Chris Hani”. These youths were arrested by <strong>the</strong> SAP.<br />

group <strong>of</strong>ten Youths armed with AK-47 assault rifles. These youths were searching for Mr Sithole and his<br />

r, Mrs Letta Sithole, because <strong>the</strong>y wanted to know if she had reported <strong>the</strong> rape <strong>of</strong> 28/08/93 The<br />

IFP supporter, Mr Wilson Sibiya, was stabbed in <strong>the</strong> neck at his house in Shabalala Street by an alleged<br />

ANC supporter.<br />

12/09/93 KATLEHONG - 13h00<br />

Mr Zebulon Zulu (4082 Motloung Section), was dragged out <strong>of</strong> his car in Twala Section by youths and<br />

beaten and stabbed. Mr Zulu and his car were <strong>the</strong>n set alight. It is alleged that <strong>the</strong> youths shouted that he<br />

was a Zulu and must be killed.<br />

12/09/93 BERGVILLE -<br />

IFP Secretary, Mr Bhekokwakhe Hadebe, was shot and killed by unidentified assailants.<br />

13/09/93 THOKOZA -<br />

The house (433 Monyani Street) <strong>of</strong> IFP Chairperson, Mr Dondo Msomi, was petrol bombed by alleged ANC<br />

supporters from Ncala Section. Mr Msomi's grandchild, Dudu, was shot in <strong>the</strong> arm. (Also see 04/09/93)<br />

13/09/93 KATLEHONG / PILOT RAILWAY STATION -<br />

The Pilot Railway Station line was damaged by youths, preventing hostel residents from going to work.<br />

13/09/93 NSELENI / MADLEBE - 20h00<br />

IFP member, Mr Sibongiseni Khoza (71), was shot and killed by unidentified assailants.<br />

14/09/93 THOKOZA -<br />

IFP supporter, Mr Timothy Zondi (721 Mdakane Street), was stabbed at Thokoza/Alrode bridge by two<br />

Xhosa speaking men.<br />

15/09/93 IXOPO-<br />

IFP Chairperson, Mr E<strong>the</strong>lbert Malinga, was shot and killed.<br />

16/09/93 IXOPO / HIGHFLATS -<br />

IFP Chairperson and LPC representative, Mr Teacher Khumalo, was shot and killed.<br />

17/09/93 IXOPO / HIGHFLATS -<br />

IFP Emazabekweni Branch Vice-Chairperson, Mr JJ Ngubane, was shot and killed by alleged ANC<br />

supporters.<br />

17/09/93 THOKOZA -<br />

Well known ANC youths in Ntabansimbi entered <strong>the</strong> house (1752 Mkwayi Street) <strong>of</strong> Mr Mchunu and asked<br />

Mrs Mchunu where her husband was. When <strong>the</strong>y could not find Mr Mchunu, <strong>the</strong>se youths left and fired<br />

shots at <strong>the</strong> house from outside.<br />

18/09/93 THOKOZA -<br />

A taxi belonging to Mr Ndlovu was set alight at <strong>the</strong> Shell Garage taxi rank by a group <strong>of</strong> youths. A peace<br />

monitor fired two shots from a car at a group <strong>of</strong> taxi owners who were chasing <strong>the</strong> youths who burnt <strong>the</strong> taxi.<br />

20/09/93 THOKOZA - 11 h30<br />

A large group <strong>of</strong> alleged ANC supporters approaching from Osizweni Dry Cleaners fired shots at Hostel<br />

#3. The ISU intervened and arrested some <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> attackers.<br />

21/09/93 THOKOZA -<br />

A group <strong>of</strong> alleged ANC supporters from Ncala Section attacked Penduka Section and <strong>the</strong> house <strong>of</strong> Mr<br />

Simon Hlope (373 Monyane Street).<br />

22/09/93 THOKOZA -<br />

A group <strong>of</strong> alleged ANC supporting youths from Ntabansimbi attacked Penduka Section and burnt several<br />

houses, including <strong>the</strong> house <strong>of</strong> prominent IFP member, Mrs Mary Zulu. Miss Thobile Vilakazi was shot in<br />

<strong>the</strong> leg.<br />
