UPDATE
ONE KCI was established to support
and further our positive school
and community climate. Initiated
five years ago, ONE KCI has continued
to gain momentum and actively
engages our students, staff,
parents, and community neighbours.
The success of “our kids” and “your
kids” is enhanced when everyone
pitches in.
ONE KCI promotes our community’s
5 qualities of good citizenship:
ONE KCI has successfully
implemented a breakfast program,
City of Kitchener’s LEAF Fund
The City of Kitchener’s Local Environmental Action
Fund (LEAF) provides funding for projects that promote
a sustainable Kitchener through the reduction of
greenhouse gas. The goal of LEAF is to reduce or
repair Kitchener’s impact on the environment focusing
on the reduction of greenhouse gases and to enhance
the ability of the Kitchener community to live sustainably
into the future.
KCI’s Horticulture Program, under the leadership of
Pat Rittinger, applied for LEAF funding and was
awarded $220,000 towards three projects. These included:
• Greenhouse
• Rooftop Garden
• Living Green Wall
Each of these projects will not only address greenhouse
gases in the community but will also improve air
quality within KCI. These projects are part of KCI’s
broader vision of a greener more ecologically friendly
school.
The 829 Evolution
Supporting the transition to High School…
Making the transition from Grade 8 to Grade 9 can be one of the most challenging and anxious
experiences for adolescents. At KCI, we want to ensure that this important transition is as stressfree
and as positive as possible.
We will once again be running the 829 Evolutionary Program. Current KCI students, identified
by staff as strong leaders and ambassadors to KCI, have been trained to be 829 Mentors and
grouped with Grade 8 students who will be making the transition to KCI in September. The 829
Mentors first met their Grade 8 friends in May as part of our Grade 8 Day where they toured
them around the school and participated in a variety of activities.
Starting the first day of school, our new Grade 9’s will meet up with their 829 Evolutionaries, as
part of their “first-day of high school” orientation. With a more seasoned student by their side,
we hope the typical anxieties of starting high school will be reduced.
There will also be a couple of grade 9 events sponsored by the Evolutionaries in September.
Grade 9 Student Night, including a dance in scheduled for September 15th. Grade 9 Parents’
Night is scheduled for September 22nd. Make sure to come out and get involved!
A Progressive
Policy on
Cell Phones &
PDAs
Cell phones and personal communication
devices while useful
in an appropriate setting,
often cause challenges in a
school (e.g. disruptions or interruptions
during classes, the
potential for cheating on tests
and/or examinations).
To maintain a positive learning
environment, cell phone
and personal communication
devices must be turned off during
instructional time and secured
out of sight.
Before school, between classes,
during lunch and after school
these devices may be used. As
with any public facility, these
devices should never be used
in washrooms and/or change
rooms. Consequences for not
complying with these guidelines
may include temporary
confiscation of the device.
In the case of an emergency,
call the school and we will
put you in touch with your
family member.
